Do you have to be from New York?

[edit]

I'm literally a few kilometers from upstate New York but on the other side of the border. Am I welcome? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 01:15, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also expressing curiosity as a Vermonter. DonIago (talk) 14:53, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm from Upstate, and I would strongly support the inclusion of our friends from Vermont (what if Upstate was its own state?) and Ontario. (This policy also applies to other polities not limited to: QuĂ©bec, western Massachussetts, and even the Northern Tier.) Remsense留 15:09, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the support! Having been a New Yorker for half my life (I grew up in Westchester), I have to admit that I don't even know what "upstate NY" is typically intended to mean unless more context is provided. North of NYC? North of Albany? My gut feeling is the latter, but then people often refer to areas of western NY as being upstate, which is unintuitive to me. DonIago (talk) 15:24, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Depends on who you ask. People living in Westchester County/NYC will often describe anything north of NYC as "upstate", while in my experience people further upstate (I'm from Syracuse), consider it to be more outside of the Hudson river valley (above the region labelled '8' here). I imagine that the further up you get, the more restricting the definitions get. Eddie891 Talk Work 15:40, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can't imagine why there might be any confusion. :p DonIago (talk) 15:45, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I live in the forest, and I'm 100 miles north of NYC, so I don't think it makes sense to put me in a category that generally means "not New York City" in the most casual sense. Generally, I think it's not a county line per se, but just "when the NYC suburban sprawl ends", so maybe halfway through Westchester. I will especially huff and puff at anybody who equates Upstate with "Western New York", which is already a perfectly lovely, serviceable term.
You know, at this point, I would listen to somebody living in Tribeca telling me about how they're Upstate. Remsense留 16:20, 29 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing to fuss about. I walk a short distance from my home to the majority of meetups of WP:Meetup/NYC but will bike to WP:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia Day 2024 in Morningside Heights. Whatever the location, we get people from New Jersey and Connecticut and the Catskills, and sometimes we have an editathon in New Jersey. WP:Meetup/Philadelphia is usually small, but I often meet someone from Delaware there, or NJ or DC. Pleasant coincidence, as interest has stirred in an Upstate Wikimeetup, some of us are also thinking of attending the April 8 Total Eclipse. One friend is going to Texas, but I more feel like taking a train to Rochester or Buffalo or some other Upstate place despite the risk of cloudy weather. The chance of a dinner or editathon or other meetup with Wikians, for example the evening before or the day after, would decide the Eclipse location for me. As a native of Albany, I don't draw a line in the sand on the definition. "Upstate" can be used as a direction; i.e. "I'm headed upstate to Poughkeepsie." Or, it can be a region; i.e. "I'm headed to upstate NY." There are north country folks who laugh at the notion of Albany or Saratoga being considered upstate (we consider them north country). I guess if a gun were put to my head, I'd say Poughkeepsie is the southern border of upstate NY. Kjscotte34 (talk) 18:23, 4 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I live southwest of Poughkeepsie, across the river. But north of I-84, and my ZIP Code begins with 12 and not 10. Our area code is 845. We have a Stewart's in our town; it's not even the southernmost in the chain. We are where the weather people on New York City TV stations are pointing to when they say "Now north and west, this will all be snow".
Of course, at the same time we can take the train to Manhattan and back within the day. And we watch New York City TV stations. Daniel Case (talk) 22:50, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ping failed

[edit]

Hi, Assorted-Interests, your ping on the page did not go through, because you didn't sign it with four tildes in the same comment (~~~~). I would suggest undoing the edit and repasting the same comment with a signature at the end so the ping goes through. Eddie891 Talk Work 18:12, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I've just had a shift in work come up that is unavoidable, and don't know if I will be able to make this meeting. I really support the organization of such a group as this and if I don't make it today I would still definitely come to a similar meeting in the future. Eddie891 Talk Work 18:14, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for telling me! I'll fix it ASAP. And I do plan on having future meetings so stay tuned. Assorted-Interests (talk) 18:15, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That one worked, thanks! Eddie891 Talk Work 18:17, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
