One of the main objectives of our Women’s Studies class is to reclaim women’s contributions through recovering and recognizing women leaders (and women's leadership). This assignment works as an opportunity for each student to explore marginalized women leaders in our future respective career fields - nursing, teaching, STEM, etc. After all, as Marian Wright Edelman famously remarked, "You cannot be what you cannot see."
The wikipedia assignment allows us to both observe gaps in public information on women leaders (who is recognized) as well as how those women leaders are recognized (such as the gendered language and frame of reference often used to describe these women).
Rather than merely reclaiming these women leaders and their stories for our class, the wikipedia assignment allows all of the hard work put into these projects to have a larger and broader impact on public access and literacy about women's leadership.
