Description
[edit]To improve content related to the Ottoman Empire. Given the breadth of information on Wikipedia about the Ottomans, there should be some sort of body to police the articles, and establish some sort of standards for style and content.

[edit]- I think a wikiproject on this topic would be great. Members could discuss and cooperate on ways to improve the articles within the scope of the empire and create an organized structure to abide by. I am particularly concerned with the subject of Vilayets and Sanjaks - the provinces and districts of the empire - and Ottoman activity in the Levant. There is a tremendous amount of articles about the Ottoman Empire here, but Wikipedia also lacks a whole lot of articles concerning this topic. Members could make a list of tasks (article requests, expansion requests, verification and referencing, copyeditting, deletion discussions, etc.) that they could actively pursue to improve the subject area. All in all, the Ottoman Empire should definitely have its own wikiproject. --Al Ameer son (talk) 03:35, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Worthy of a WikiProject, surprising there isn't one already. Izzedine (talk) 03:46, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]- This could simply be a task force or absorbed into one of the many other WikiProject's on the subject: WP:ARAB, WP:WASIA, WP:MA, WP:ISLAM, or WP:TURKEY. Or a broader WikiProject could be proposed. --Odie5533 (talk) 14:18, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- A task-force is a good suggestion. If by any chance, this proposal fails, we could make it a task-force of of WP Turkey. WP Islam already has task-froce Muslim history. --
- Ottoman is Turkey. I don’t know why you are trying to separate Turkey from its own history. Mussav (talk) 14:27, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- No, it's not like that all. WP Ottoman Empire could be a sister project of WP Turkey. Also, remember that the empire included much of North Africa, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. --Al Ameer son (talk) 16:44, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Still I don't see a point of making a sister project of WP Turkey? Should we make a sister project of each period? Ottoman is part of Turkey's history. North Africa and the Middle East weren't states in that time and Turkey/Ottoman was the only state that controlled those lands. Mussav (talk) 17:47, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Responding to the suggestion that the history of the Ottoman Empire could easily be "absorbed into one of the many other WikiProject's [sic]." Your joking right? The Ottomans weren't Arabs nor was their empire an extension of the Islamic Empire (I am leaving aside the suggestion that the project falls under the same scope as the history of China). Now as for grouping it with Turkey??? The Ottoman Empire was one distinct period in the very long and ancient history of Anatolia (modern dat Turkey). Grouping it with Turkey would be like saying the period of the American Civil War is an extension of Native American history. It makes no sense.Tobit2 (talk) 13:02, 5 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- Creating this WikiProject, (sorry), because consensus seems to be towards creation. Out of the proposals: WP:ARAB - Turkish people aren't Arabs. WP:WASIA - WP:IRAQ; WP:Jordan. WP:MA - WP:PRUSSIA; WP:Naples WP:ISLAM - WP:IRAQ; WP:Jordan; WP:IRAN Tobit2 made a great argument against WP:TURKEY. mynameinc 21:01, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]Comment: I think a Wikiproject would be useful, the question is however if u can keep it alive. What would the purpose of the project be? Create a layout and guidelines on the project page. Discuss what missing articles there are and how we could improve them. Create the project and I'd be happy to join if there seems to be real attention to the project.--Diaa abdelmoneim (talk) 10:09, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
