  • Haha. This topic may seem easy, but it is difficult to edit. Different species have its own migration habits while some species don't migrate at all. Somehow bird migration can be influence by many different factors (internally and externally). Recently I have came across an article regarding climate changes which has influence some species to change their migration habits. Well, I like challenges... haha Luffy487 08:50, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is a very well-known bird species, so quite a few people will read this article's page. It has a fascinating life history and has been documented in a few movies (something called March of the Penguins). This would be the first Antartic species collaborated on and (if it passes) could be the first Antartic GA/FA. Highly interesting, well-known bird and it is a penguin. What more could it be? 3. User:totnesmartin Totnesmartin (talk) 23:16, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments:

There is a recent hard-to-get paper from some NZ or Aussie journal (Alcheringa or the likes) that argues a few points that might be considered. If the moa article is kept at genus level or above and doesn't get too detailed about species, there shouldnn't be major problems though.
I think the Lost World book should be accessible at least in part (Amazon?) Old Notornis papers are good for specimen data. I have a carbon copy of Oliver' NZ Birds which is unreliable but highly highly detailed.
Pro: Secondary literature is highly available (SAPE has much from diverse sources, Roy Soc NZ Transactions/Proceedings, Notornis). Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 00:01, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have Lost World, plus I also work some of the time in Te Papa and have access to their library. Sabine's Sunbird talk 00:43, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comments:

  • Some good images available. The genus comprises nine well known living macaws and six extinct macaws. The article may include conservation issues and the pet trade. There are only a few genus bird articles that have been worked up, and it would be useful to have another one to provide another example of what a genus page should include. Snowman (talk) 12:57, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cockateil unfortunately fizzled, but this is a good candidate in the field of parrotness. Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:06, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Genus level is good. Not as scary as birds of prey, a massive challenge, pigeons depress me (our local Wood Pigeons have learned to hang on the bird feeders), and I've nothing on the eagle jimfbleak (talk) 06:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A very well known group of parrots. A popular page. Some of the species are common and some are rare. Some good photographs available. Snowman (talk) 15:17, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And I want to add, the baby-stork story has more truth to it then people think, not that they bring babies, but that storks are generally more common in areas that also carry larger families. This is because of a correlation between the fertility of the ground that makes both higher stock populations and bigger families possible. -- Kim van der Linde at venus 00:41, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Preening (bird) (4 votes) for July 2017

[edit]

Nominated June 29, 2017 by MeegsC (talk) 12:06, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comments: Right now, Wikipedia's preening article redirects to personal grooming and includes human activities (though it's much less human-centric than it used to be). Considering that this is a primary activity for birds, with substantial amounts of time devoted to it every day, it deserves a much better article.

  • I do not seriously expect this to be done anytime soon, and I wouldn't even recommend it as long as the Pachycephalidae are unreviewed for example. But this bird can be expected to have sundry features molecular, morphological and other that are not found in any other bird species known to man. Ther eis some info at parrotbill that might be brought over. Interwikis might have some too. (And luckily it's not like the parrotbills hiding away in some East Asian bamboo thicket. Source situation is very good, but much is hardcopy only) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 22:03, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • It would be interesting to do an article about a monotypic family. I was thinking more along the lines of Shoebill, but hmmm... Several nice pictures with the article too... Rufous-crowned Sparrow (talk) 22:06, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Pros:has a bunch of cites and may need the least amount of owrk to get to FA. Cons: I get a bit depressed working on exticnt critters all the time.........cheers, Casliber | talk | contribs 22:58, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Interesting animal, already has 13 in-line cites, and might help raise awareness of the fact that bird species are disappearing at an alarming rate. Though I don't like to see Cas depressed... Firsfron of Ronchester 06:08, 25 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Con: this requires major ugly literature research if it's gotta be watertight, which it probably won't be anyway as the Naturalis people are currently working their magic with the new bones. The results of their research, I think, should be published before it becomes worthwhile. The in-line cites need revamping; there has to be a proper (alphabetic) list in this taxon if in any because if you write as much as 3 sentences about these critters without constantly accessing a ref list to quadruple-check, odds are you will include at least one major error. If you happen to have access to a copy of Hachisuka (1953), read it once again, weep once again, and nod knowingly... oh, half the literature that simply has to be in there - no secondary sources because many are garbled - is pre-1800... Dysmorodrepanis 09:25, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Pro: it's extinct - if I'd get depressed over that, I'd be long dead for all the extinct birdies I have collected info about. Seriously: I kind of see improving extinct birds articles on WP as a small recompensation, to at least preserve the knowledge of that which is lost. • I think it's an interesting animal, and the article already has citations. The taxobox looks good, there are some nice illustrations... A little filling out (more refs, etc) and it would make a great article. Firsfron of Ronchester 03:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Good candidate that needs still needs a lot of work. Unlike Dodo, the contentious bits resolve easy. Some refs on fossil record I already put in page source, outcommented ("Further reading" -> "edit"). There is, I think, a round-up review from the 1950s(? -era?), and Birds of North America (I don't have access at present) I think is also extremely good.
A question I always asked myself: how can a 1000-sqare-klick-colony location be not remembered? The mid-20th-century book seems to be the only source with locality information. I have not seen it; all other sources are blanks however and those ppl I asked sort of shrugged and nodded to that book. Dysmorodrepanis 09:28, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • This is an article on one of the best-known birds outside of what lives in your backyard. It is the world's largest eagle, is critically endangered, a monotypic genus, has some images and text, needs more text and citations desperately, and all in all is a fascinating animal. Additionally, I don't think we have many good articles on a Southeast Asian bird. On the downside, we have done quite a few birds of prey in this collaboration. Oh well. Comments: Very high profile article getting hundreds of hits per day; currently rated Start but actually much better than that - maybe B; lots of photos available; could well be the basis for a small FT, whether adding just Green Peafowl or Congo Peafowl as well. There is an article on Peafowl (getting c.1.5k hits/day) which maybe should be merged to Pavo (genus), or raised to subfamily? status to cover Afropavo. All a bit messy but lots of material available on biology and cultural significance. Maias (talk) 23:26, 31 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - as explained on the bird project page. I have one question that was left unanswered during the GA review, which might finally get answered (why Gould gave it a new scientific name). Also would be good to clarify whether this has been placed in the genus Antigone, which is implied on Commons, but not mentioned in the article... FunkMonk (talk) 11:57, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
