Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Assessment/Assessment Drive/February—March 2007

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

WikiProject Biography Spring 2007 Assessment Drive is a month long effort to reduce the backlog of unassessed biography articles from 135,345 as of February 24, 2007 to as low as we can get it by March 24, 2007. Every great journey starts with a single step. And we would love to have your help and you will be generously rewarded for your efforts by this drive's awards committee!

As far as this drive knows, this is the first ever Biography assessment drive. This month long assessment drive will continue through March 24, 2007. Please take the time to sign up for a section of unassessed articles from the list at the bottom of this page. To sign up, simply add your signature (by adding three consecutive tildas, which are these ~~~) below the section of articles that you are volunteering to do. Then, make sure to complete your assessments by the end of the month.

Spring 2007 assessment drive now closed

Through the WikiProject Biography Spring 2007 Assessment Drive, 44,324 articles were assessed, reducing the number of unassessed articles by an astounding 33% - from 135,345 to 91,021. In addition, many of the assessed articles further were linked to the appropriate work groups, significantly improving the chance that these articles will be improved. More important, we developed new techniques as a result of this drive that will allow us to eventually overcome the huge backlog of unassessed articles. Without your assistance, the assessment drive would not have achieved such significant results. On behalf of Mocko13, Ozgod, and myself, we thank you for your participation in the drive. Please direct all further assessment comments to WikiProject Biography Assessment talk. -- Jreferee 18:06, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Progress on assessing articles

[edit]

The number of unassessed articles will decrease as a result of this drive, but may increase as a result of articles being tagged with the {{WPBiography}} project banner with the class parameter not filled in. However, the number of assessed articles will increase as values are entered into the class parameters. The number of articles assessed during this drive is the total number of articles tagged with the {{WPBiography}} project banner minus the number of unassessed articles as indicated by the Biography articles by quality statistics

Instructions on how to assess a Biography article

[edit]

Have you ever assessed an article before? No problem. Articles should be assessed according to the Quality scale and instructions. In reducing the backlog, you may come across four classes: Stub, Start, B, and A. Most backlogged articles are either Start or Stub. Stubs are small, perhaps less than 1,000 characters. Start articles are usually larger than stubs and have references. B articles have inline citations, infoboxes as appropriate and may or may not be ready for GA review. A articles that have not been reviewed for GA are extremely rare.

An article's assessment is generated from the class parameter in the {{WPBiography}} project banner on the article's talk page. Articles for which a valid class is not provided are listed in Category:Unassessed biography articles.

Using the link for the section of articles you've signed up for or any of those listed in Category:Unassessed biography articles, click on a link for an article, which will take you to the article's talk page. Then, look over the article in anticipation of filling out the parameters of the {{WPBiography}} template. Once you have decided what you want to rate it, click back to the talk page.

Biography articles to be assessed have some aspects of the {{WPBiography}} template on their talk page, but the template may be incomplete. Below is a WPBiography template with all the answers that you will need for most situations. Replace the {{WPBiography}} template on the article talk page with the following:

{{WPBiography
|living=yes no
|class=B Start Stub
|needs-infobox=yes no
|activepol=yes <!-- Active politician -->
|a&e-work-group=yes <!-- Arts and entertainment -->
|politician-work-group=yes
|military-work-group=yes
|sports-work-group=yes
|s&a-work-group=yes <!-- Science and academia -->
|musician-work-group=yes
|listas= <!-- Last name, first names -->
|needs-photo=yes no
}}

As noted, the above {{WPBiography}} template has all the answers that you will need for most situations. Given the importance of WP:BLP, the living parameter should be identified as "yes" or "no" rather than deleted if the answer is "no". As for the remaining parameters (except the listas parameter), if the answer is "no" that parameter should be deleted. After addressing the yes/no parameters, fill in the listas parameter (e.g., last name, first name), then save. And, you are done! You can read more about each parameter at {{WPBiography}}.

Further questions? Feel free to ask them on the discussion page.

Additional tagging

[edit]

You may come across articles that have outrageous material in them. Please delete unsourced potentially libelous material. You may use the following in the edit summary

Deleted unsourced potentially libelous material per [[WP:BLP]]

Other tags you may wish to consider using on the mainspace of the article to help its future development:

{{expand}} - adds a tag noting that the article needs expansion.
{{unreferenced}} - if the article contains no references.
{{wfy}} - if the article needs to cleaned up to meet Wikipedia standards
{{expert-subject|Biography}} - this is tagged to notify that an expert on the subject is needed.
{{notability}} - if the notability of the subject has not been made clear in the article

Assessment from an article page

[edit]

Outriggr recently designed a script that will cut you assessment time down by about ten fold (what took ten hours now may only take one hour with Outriggr's script). Please see the 'assessment from article page' discussion.

Unhappy editors?

[edit]

If you receive a note from an editor who is unhappy with your assessment work as part of this drive and would like a second opinion, please post a note on this drive's talk page or post a note on Jreferee, Mocko13, and/or Ozgod's talk page.

Awards

[edit]

For participating in this drive, you will be awarded one or more awards by the drive's awards committee: Mocko13, Ozgod, and Jreferee. This drive has finished and the awards have been distributed.

Schedule

[edit]

The following milestone schedule lists an approximate number of biographies to qualify for a particular award category:

Nominations

[edit]
This drive has finished. Increasing the number behind your name will not get you another award. Don't let that stop you from assessing WPBio articles though!

To receive an award, please include your name and the number of biographies you have assessed as part of this drive. Please keep a running total next to your name. Awards will be given by the drive's awards committee after this drive ends. The awards committee may award any one editor up to three awards from each of the four above awards categories. However, any editor may award another editor an award, so if you see actions taken during this drive that merit an award, please feel free to show your appreciation.

What's Been Done So Far
