Propose merging Template:Permanent dead link with Template:Dead link.
This is a well intentioned convenience template that is structurally flawed and little used. 149 instances in 4 years. The separation of flagging permanent dead links into multiple templates adds unneeded complications for bots other tools to support. The complications are not worth the minor convenience, arguably hardly none. 99.999% of the instances of permanent dead links {{Dead link|fix-attempted=yes}} are added by InternetArchiveBot. The existence of this flag does not literally mean "permanent" dead, archives become available by providers that were previously blacked out for policy or technical reasons; and IABot can not check Archive.today where frequently archives can be found. The whole notion of "permanent" dead was an IABot internal flag specific to that bot. For example my bot WaybackMedic on a regular basis processes all so-called "permanent" dead links and finds archives for about 20% of them because it's better at finding archives then IABot. Overall this concept of a "permanent" dead link is flawed, from any perspective but IABot's internal logic. GreenC 18:59, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If Template:Permanent dead link is going to be turned back into a plain redirect again, shouldn't we just delete the Template:Permanent dead link along with Template:Permanently dead link titles altogether? It's highly misleading and downright deceptive to have something at "Template:Permanent dead link" that when you transclude, the resulting output is [dead link] and not [permanent dead link], and you still have to manually specify a parameter to get the latter output, thus making it pointless and a waste of time. As you say, only about 150 or so of these transclusions, so they almost aren't used, it would be an easy task for a bot (or even a human, at that level) to convert these all to Template:Dead link with the fix-attempted parameter set to yes. — AP 499D25 (talk) 00:41, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Izno, it is not (currently) a subst-only template. But it can be converted to one, and I think making it automatically substitute into {{Dead link|fix-attempted=yes}} would resolve GreenC's concerns.
