All the above labelled map templates were created in 2011 and transcluded in only one article. Size in bytes ranges between 1.1k-3.3k, markup is not intricate. 12 years later they seem unlikely to be of use in multiple articles, so it is better to subst in respective articles and delete them. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 14:59, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This template is incorrectly used to hide an external link in the body of an article with a simple image, instead of correctly either being used as a reference in the body, or an external link without the image in the external links section (see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#Position in article). I've tried to correct this and was reverted. As it currently is used, I see no way it can be kept (but I prefer the changes to the template and transclusions are restored). Since the page has no talk page, bringing it to TfD is the only real option. Gonnym (talk) 12:56, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Keep. Per WP:ELLIST, "appropriate external links can be displayed compactly within [a] table". The images are a means to display the links compactly. The nominator doesn't understand that the purpose of the links is to provide the reader with extra information that is too detailed to be included in the text. They aren't used as references for any information in the article. Sportsfan77777 (talk) 16:09, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Keep. Not all templates containing links to external sources must be placed in the "External Links" topic, a colleague gave an example just above. Therefore, I do not consider this template "cluttering up Wikipedia with external links", since they are: 1) more than constructive for a chess fans who visits one or another Wikipedia chess page for detailed information, 2) are visually minimized on the Wikipedia, 3) provide links exclusively to specific games of the universally recognized world site of chess statistics.
Moreover, tagging a template as "Template for discussion" requires the person doing it some skill set to be careful not to mess up those existing Wikipedia pages where the template is used. Now there is a certain set of pages about various chess tournaments, where after this action the "layout of wikipage" has become seriously disturbed. Gottfrid (talk) 21:56, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Delete, as far as I can tell, in Aron Nimzowitsch this should be a citation template, maybe {{cite chessgames game}}. in Vera Menchik, it should have some link text like "report" which is done for other sports matches. Frietjes (talk) 00:06, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
How the template is used in the Aron Nimzowitsch article is different from its intended usage in a table. It's not meant to be used in a "notable games" section at all. (You can check out an old revision of that page for what that section is supposed to look like.) Sportsfan77777 (talk) 09:08, 23 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. In its current use it's frankly unacceptable as hiding that it is an external link. In its apparent former and intended use, it prejudices one website unreasonably for the purposes of inline listing, which is not the exception that ELLIST does allow; not the example is very much "a a directory of links to a series of websites for politicians". As for ELLIST, using links in lists should be the exception, not the rule, and it sits on shaky ground anyway from a PAG perspective (but that is for elsewhere). Izno (talk) 05:06, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. In my opinion the issue with this template is that it obfuscates the link. The link is hidden behind a generic image of a chess board, so that if you come across this template in an article it isn't obvious that it is a link and it isn't obvious what site it leads to. To get around this the uses in tables have to have to have extra cells explaining what the images are, but this shouldn't be necessary - a link should be obvious just from looking at it. In addition I substantially agree with the points being made by Izno about the appropriateness of these links to begin with. The moves that were played in a game should be included in the article, so this fails WP:ELNO point 1, and it does seem to play favourites with a website for the sake of a small link. Hopefully Wugapodes will finish mw:Extension:ChessBrowser, so we can embed interactive chess games into pages directly, rather than using external sites. 163.1.15.238 (talk) 14:10, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No real need for a template. Four of the seven links are simply redirects to the main article, and Helen Graham (The Tenant of Wildfell Hall) doesn't need a separate article either. (I'm going to nominate her for deletion.) Clarityfiend (talk) 08:04, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
