- Template:Libel (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
This user warning message was created in 2008 and has been used seven times since. I became aware of it today when an LTA with a very long memory used it in a bit of trolling. If there's somewhere good to redirect this to, I wouldn't object—{{uw-defamatory1}} would make sense, perhaps, but is intended for the opposite purpose—but otherwise I think deletion is in order. The template's current wording is not a reflection of current attitudes toward libel accusations, which are sensitive enough that a custom message is almost always needed. It neither gives good advice (if a user is already complaining on-wiki, why direct them to VRT instead?) nor strikes a good tone for dealing with someone who feels wronged (attempting to assert a defensive legal position on behalf of the Foundation). -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 23:12, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Individual formatted element templates
These templates see considerably less use than Template:Chem and Template:Chem2 etc (which have 4500 and 2500 transclusions), and a large proportion are unused altogether. They are mostly poorly or not documented. They are redundant to those templates: you can write {{chem|16|O|2|+}}, {{chem2|^{16}O2+}} or {{oxygen|2|+|16}} to achieve 16
O+
2, 16O+2 or 16O+2 respectively. The nominated templates always link the element, and in general we don't want templates that force the user to insert links, to allow MOS:OVERLINK to be followed. Linking is supported by chem and chem2 by writing {{chem|16|[[Oxygen|O]]|2|+}} or {{chem2|^{16}O2+|auto=1}}, but not mandatory. I would suggest that the templates all be replaced with {{chem2}}, probably manually for the single-use templates and in more automated fashion for the few that are higher use. Equally, we could decide to keep some of the most transcluded ones, but it would be inconvenient for editors to have to guess at which ones exist so I would prefer total conversion to chem2. (Transclusion counts are pulled from the Link count API and tabulated for convenience; if that breaks something we can switch back to a bulleted list.) User:GKFXtalk 20:15, 23 November 2021 (UTC)
- Replace and delete. The low usages show that these aren't being used or wanted. There is also no reason to have 3 templates doing the same exact thing and ideally, there would be only one. As always, move to the holding cell and delete entries per replacement progress. Gonnym (talk) 09:24, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Delete and standardize to {{chem}} and {{chem2}}, as above. They are not widely used and redundant to the more generic, more flexible templates. ComplexRational (talk) 19:14, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- I’ve had a look through some of the usage in more detail and I think it is a fully manual job, as there are long strings of multiple of these templates mixed with raw HTML which need to be merged together into a single call to chem2. Also, deciding which of the original links to keep is a style question. User:GKFXtalk 20:13, 24 November 2021 (UTC)
- Delete all per nom. This is additionally clumsy to edit as part of a chemical formula; e.g.
{{Praseodymium}}{{fluorine|4}}
vs.{{chem2|PrF4|auto=1}}
to make PrF4 (praseodymium(IV) fluoride), and it gets a lot worse for some organic molecules. –LaundryPizza03 (dc̄) 00:33, 25 November 2021 (UTC) - I wont miss any of these, However please do not encourage use of chem or chem2 as they produce bad output which is not searchable. We should be deleting chem and chem2 as well if they are not fixed to remove spacing between symbols. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 22:35, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Graeme Bartlett: Could you clarify your issue with chem and chem2? I recently changed how chem2 does superscripts and subscripts to remove br tags, which may have solved your problem. User:GKFXtalk 08:05, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
- I will check it out @GKFX:. Searching for H2O does not find H
2O or H2O. Can you take out all the spacing characters inserted in chem and chem2? For lists of chemicals is useful for me to search a page to see if a formula is on the list, but with chem and chem2, there is no match. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:23, 26 November 2021 (UTC)- I had already taken out all spacing characters from chem2, the HTML for H+2 is
<span class="chemf nowrap">H<span class="template-chem2-su"><span>+</span><span>2</span></span></span>
. What breaks it is the CSS that's being used to get stacked super/subscript, and that's more difficult to work around because almost any layout-related CSS attributes causes browsers to see text as not being part of the same word, and the algorithm they use for find-in-page is apparently not standardized or documented. I managed to get this funky bit of CSS to make H+2 searchable and copyable as "H2+" on Firefox, but it's not searchable on Chrome. Tricky one, unless you just abandon the stacked subscripts. User:GKFXtalk 22:27, 26 November 2021 (UTC)- Well I would expect it to be a bit unpredictable with stacked subscripts. Your example could appear as H2+ or H+2. Most formulae don't have stacked subscript, so the CSS should be simpler for them and hopefully search could work. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 11:28, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

- As a bit of a Doctor Who fan, I like this template. However, I would note that it is completely from an in-universe perspective of time. From a real-world perspective, reading top down, we have a 2020 episode, then 1976, then 1963-69, then back to 2020, then back to the 1970s, a couple of real royals whose relevance isn't clear, onward to the 1990s, then 2013, 2005, etc. If it were to be kept as a diagram somewhere, which would not be unreasonable, then some indication of broadcast dates would be necessary to tie it to reality.
