The result of the discussion was Merge to {{Cite patent}}. Since the discussion indicates that the functionality needs further testing, I'm moving this template to Template:Cite patent/sandbox2 without redirect, and replacing the transclusions with {{Cite patent}} with minimal field changes. That means the additional field for Google linking will be ignored for now, but should work again once the field is added to {{Cite patent}}, without having to go through the old transclusions to re-add it. Template:Google patents (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)

This template appears to be essentially redundant to one of the many templates listed in Template:Cite_patent#See_also. It is likely that there is some unique feature here that is not included in those templates, but there is no reason that I can see why such functionality could not be merged with one of the other templates given the low number of transclusions of this template (only 2). The code indicates that this template was a fork, which I am sure was well-intentioned, but I think we can merge this with the more commonly used templates. I created the latest version of this template and I agree that it ought to be pretty easy to merge into {{Cite_patent}} and the other ones it's a copy of. I think the reason I didn't do that originally was because I don't have permissions to edit one of the related templates maybe?
I don't know about the original creator but the primary functionality I wanted was to be able to pass in the corresponding unique ID from http://www.google.com/patents (template parameter "google-id" here) and thereby produce a link to Google's fascimile of the original paper patent, which I prefer to most of the other patent database sites available online. I think I might also have juggled around the order that the various details of the patent are displayed in but that's just aesthetic and is unimportant to me.
It also has some funny formatting problems that I think may be related to some sort of bug in MediaWiki itself, though I haven't tried to debug it rigorously yet. (And I imagine that will be unnecessary now if we're going to integrate it into {{Cite_patent}}).
If someone happens to be working on this, an additional template parameter allowing the selection of a particular page (URI parameter "pg", I believe) would be handy, as that would allow linking to the illustration / drawing page depicting the device in question, which I think might be of the most interest to an encyclopedia audience. --❨Ṩtruthious andersnatch❩ 22:40, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You can open a protected page, copy the source code and paste it to a sandbox such as Template:Cite patent/sandbox, then work on it. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 03:14, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
