Wikimedia Research & Data Hackathon, November 9th, 2013

[edit]

Hi all! First off, it was great to meet you today and/or see you again. I'm thrilled that my first Seattle Meetup was so well-attended and interesting.

I mentioned during the event that I'm coordinating the Seattle Research & Data Hackathon on Saturday, November 9th. This inaugural research hackathon will be a relatively informal event: there's a broad proposed agenda here, but we can really make the day whatever we want. Probably topics of conversation/collaboration include:

  • research tools and datasets (and how to use them)
  • burning research questions (and how to ask and answer them)
  • ongoing research projects (and how to get involved)
  • new research projects (...you get the idea).

The hackathon is for both interested local Wikipedians and students and researchers from UW. The event will be held semi-concurrently with other hackathons in Minnesota, San Francisco, the UK, and elsewhere, hosted by WMF researchers and Wikipedians from around the world. There will be open IRC channels and Google Hangouts throughout the day so that we can share ideas and even collaborate with the other sites and with Wikipedians who don't have a hackathon in their area.

Afterwards, I'd be happy to re-convene somewhere on the Ave for food and drink. Please sign up, spread the word, and let me know if you have any questions!

I look forward to seeing you at next months' meetup if not sooner. Cheers, - J-Mo Talk to Me Email Me 05:24, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone else is here at the Allegro for the meetup: I'm in the "GS8" t-shirt, at a table near the center of the main room, come join me. - Jmabel | Talk 02:01, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disorganization:

Well, I was at Allegro. They said whoever had the upstairs reserved had cancelled. I went up anyway and there was a hip-hop group, who said they had the room reserved. If there are Wikipedians here, damn if I know who they are/were. What a waste of time. Yworo (talk) 03:26, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to hear - I think Dennis was probably the guy singing hip-hop. Anyway, I messaged you on your talk page. Let's talk about Seattle Wikipedia stuff some time. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:33, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I did finally connect with them shortly before the meeting broke up. They weren't upstairs and weren't obviously all on Wikipedia, so I didn't know how to identify them. Yworo (talk) 22:54, 6 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
