From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
New England Wikimedia General Meeting

The New England Wikimedia General Meeting will be a large-scale meetup of all interested Wikimedians from the New England area in order to discuss regional coordination and possible formalization of our community (i.e., a chapter).
Sunday, April 22
1:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Conference Room C06, Johnson Building,
Boston Public Library—Central Library
700 Boylston St., Boston MA 02116

We hope that this will be a very important meetup for everyone to attend, as it may affect the future of the Wikimedia community in New England. We will discuss current activities already going on in the region, including the regular Boston meetup schedule, the Wikipedia education program, and GLAM collaborations. We will also share ideas about future events and how we can become more organized. This is not an administrative meeting; it will be informal, and primarily chance to socialize in person with others from the area. There will be free food provided for attendees. All ages and wiki experience levels are welcome.

If you haven't attended a meetup in a while (or ever), this one is important!

Background

[edit]

In New York and DC, the local Wikimedian communities have already organized into official chapters (Wikimedia New York City and Wikimedia DC). This allows the local volunteers to make official contacts to institutions on behalf of a recognized organization, to be able to collect and spend money for events and equipment, and to generally support the local Wikimedia community in its efforts. The DC community is even organizing Wikimania 2012!

We don't know whether New England has enough interest and participation to work towards a formal organization in the short-term, but this meeting is an opportunity for everyone to get involved in some capacity and help us do cool, fun stuff in our region.

Thank you a ton for that space! In case they're not on your radar, WP:Meetup/Boston, the Boston Wikipedia group's Meetup.com page, and the wikimedia-boston mailing list are common places for discussing and announcing Boston- and New England-related Wikipedia events. Best, Emw (talk) 02:47, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  17. I live only four blocks away, so there is no excuse.

Maybe

  1. Could be an interesting experience...I'll see if I can work it with my schedule. A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 20:12, 21 March 2012 (UTC) Alas no. Keep me informed about future events, however - Boston is definitely within weekend-trip range for me! A fluffernutter is a sandwich! (talk) 20:41, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  5. I would like to attend but not sure of my schedule yet. Also I will be moving out of New England in the fall so not sure if that would be a problem. --Found5dollar (talk) 12:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all! The event is open to the public. Emw (talk) 02:36, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  6. I will try to attend. Please post parking info. Also expected length of meeting. Thanks! Woz2 (talk) 13:01, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's from 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM, and if parking is an issue, take the Green line, it's right on the Copley stop. Sven Manguard Wha? 13:34, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Boston parking meters don't run on Sundays, so if you don't want to pay for Green Line parking, find a spot on the street nearby and it's yours for the duration. ☯.ZenSwashbuckler.☠ 14:00, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  7. I'm defending my thesis on 28 April, but I could try to make time on Sunday. I walk 5 miles/day and could justify walking to the BPL for this event, then will need to rest halfway. MaynardClark (talk)
  8. Sounds like a whole lot of fun, but it comes right at the end of my spring break and because I live in Southern Massachusetts I need to clear it with my dad (he's my ride). If I can't make it, good luck to everyone who's attending! --Abigail was here :D Talk to Me. Email Me. 12:25, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Let us know if you need a ride, and maybe someone here coming from the same direction can help. Dominic·t 22:06, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  9. I would love to, but I'm not sure I will have the time. The invite is much appreciated. BostonUrbEx (talk) 12:38, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  10. I'm supposed to be picking up 30,000 buzzing insects for my wife's beehive that day (no jokes, please) but this is a possibility. - DavidWBrooks (talk) 19:41, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  11. I have a rail trail clean up scheduled that morning...but if i get cleaned up in time. EraserGirl (talk) 20:19, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  12. I will think about coming! Ogram (talk) 13:07, 12 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  13. Depends on if I have engineering work in Springfield that day or not. I will try , however. NECRATSpeak to me 06:51, 14 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the timing just didn't work out for me. Keep me informed about Boston events, however. NECRATSpeak to me 08:58, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  9. Unfortunately I work weekends, and would need much longer notice to make arrangements, if I could. J S Ayer
  10. Alas, will not be able to come. Between new baby (any day now) and possible Bs-Caps Game 6, I'm highly unlikely to make it. Thanks for talk page invite and best of luck with the meeting! ☯.ZenSwashbuckler.☠ 13:40, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  11. I am a bit too far away to attend, but if there was ever a meeting in Burlington, Vermont I would be interested. Also, a Skype meeting would be cool. Gopats92 (talk) 14:54, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  12. To my ongoing regret, I am no longer in New England (Minneapolis, MN appears likely to be my residence for the foreseeable future), so I will be unable to attend. You might want to remove me from your invitation list, too. *Septegram*Talk*Contributions* 17:08, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
