James A. Doonan (November 8, 1841 – April 12, 1911) was an American Catholic priest and Jesuit who was the president of Georgetown University from 1882 to 1888. Born in Georgia, he studied at Georgetown before entering the Society of Jesus in 1857. During his formation, he taught at Loyola College in Maryland and Boston College. He also studied at Woodstock College and was ordained a priest in 1874. Doonan became a professor at Georgetown before being named president in 1882. He worked to offset the debt accrued during the construction of Healy Hall, and installed in front of the building two historic cannons that had been carried aboard Lord Baltimore's 1634 expeditionary voyage to Maryland. He also oversaw construction of a new building for the School of Medicine. After his presidency, Doonan continued teaching and engaging in pastoral work throughout the Northeastern United States. 1278 – Trần Thánh Tông, the second emperor of Vietnam's Trần dynasty, took up the title of retired emperor, but continued to co-rule with his son Nhân Tông for eleven more years.
1861 – American Civil War: USS San Jacinto stopped RMS Trent (depicted) and arrested two Confederate envoys en route to Europe, sparking a major diplomatic crisis between the United Kingdom and the United States.
1940 – The Italian invasion of Greece failed as outnumbered Greek units repulsed the Italians at the Battle of Elaia–Kalamas.

Jack Nicholson

The filmography of American actor Jack Nicholson began with his debut in The Cry Baby Killer (1958), but Nicholson's breakout role was in the countercultural Easy Rider (1969). He next appeared in Five Easy Pieces (1970). For his performance in the Roman Polanski–directed Chinatown (1974), Nicholson was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. The following year, he portrayed Randle McMurphy in the Miloš Forman–directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), which won Best Picture and garnered him the Academy Award for Best Actor. In 1980, Nicholson played Jack Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. For his portrayal of playwright Eugene O'Neill in Reds (1981), Nicholson received the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Situated on the river Boite, in an alpine valley, it is a summer and winter sports resort. Seen here in late summer from Mount Faloria with the peaks of Tofane in the background, Cortina d'Ampezzo hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2021, and, jointly with Milan, is scheduled to host the 2026 Winter Olympics and the 2026 Winter Paralympics.
