From today's featured articleRandall Davidson (1848–1930) was an Anglican priest who was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1903 to 1928. Conciliatory by nature, he spent much of his term of office striving to keep the Church together in the face of deep and sometimes acrimonious divisions between evangelicals and Anglo-Catholics. Under his leadership the Church gained some independence from state control, but his efforts to modernise the Book of Common Prayer were frustrated by Parliament. Though cautious about bringing the Church into domestic party politics, Davidson did not shy away from larger political issues. He urged moderation on both sides in the conflict over Irish independence and campaigned against immoral methods of warfare in the First World War. He played a key role in the passage of the Parliament Act 1911 and led efforts to resolve the 1926 General Strike. He was the longest-serving Archbishop of Canterbury since the Reformation, and also the first to retire from the office. (Full article...)

Seventy-four churches have been preserved by the Churches Conservation Trust in the English Midlands, consisting of those in the counties of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Rutland, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Warwickshire, Northamptonshire, and Gloucestershire. The Churches Conservation Trust, which was initially known as the Redundant Churches Fund, is a charity whose purpose is to protect historic churches at risk, those that have been made redundant by the Church of England. The ages of the churches range from St Andrew's Church, Wroxeter (pictured), which contains fabric from the Anglo-Saxon period, to the newest church in the list, St John the Baptist's Church, Avon Dassett, which was built in 1868; the greatest proportion of the churches date from the 12th and 13th centuries. All the churches have been designated by English Heritage as listed buildings, almost all of them at the highest Grades I and II*. Some of the churches stand in the centres of cities or towns, and their functions have been taken over by nearby churches. (Full list...)
Today's featured picture
The Inspection is the third of a series of six oil-on-canvas paintings by English painter and pictorial satirist William Hogarth, created around 1743. The series, entitled Marriage A-la-Mode, depicts an arranged marriage and its disastrous consequences in a satire of 18th-century society, and is now in the collection of the National Gallery in London. In this picture, titled The visit to the quack doctor by Hogarth, a young viscount (the son of the bankrupt Earl Squanderfield) is shown visiting a quack doctor. The black patch on the viscount's neck indicates that he has syphilis; he may have brought the young prostitute to the doctor because he believes he has infected her with the disease. The picture has been interpreted in various ways. The doctor is based on Dr Rock, a French doctor with premises at St Martin's Lane, Westminster, and the setting has a wealth of detail of the doctor's consulting room and the tools of his trade.
