From today's featured articleIrritator was a spinosaurid dinosaur that lived in what is now Brazil about 110 million years ago, during the Early Cretaceous. It is known from a nearly complete skull found in the Romualdo Formation of the Araripe Basin. The genus name reflects the irritation of paleontologists who found that the skull had been heavily damaged and altered by collectors. Estimated at between 6 and 8 meters (20 and 26 ft) in length, Irritator weighed around 1 tonne (1.1 short tons), making it one of the smallest spinosaurids known. Its long, shallow and slender snout was lined with straight and unserrated conical teeth. Lengthwise atop the head ran a thin sagittal crest, to which powerful neck muscles were likely anchored. A generalist diet—like that of today's crocodilians—has been suggested. Irritator inhabited the tropical environment of a coastal lagoon surrounded by dry regions. It coexisted with other carnivorous theropods as well as turtles, crocodyliforms, and a large number of pterosaur and fish species. (Full article...)

The English ceremonial county of Somerset contains a wide range of museums: institutions (including nonprofit organisations, government entities, and private businesses) that collect and care for objects of cultural, artistic, scientific, or historical interest and make their collections or related exhibits available for public viewing. Many of the museums are in listed buildings. In the United Kingdom, this signifies a building which has been placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. In England and Wales, the authority for listing is granted by the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, and is administered by English Heritage. Many of the museums have been accredited by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, which sets national standards for museums in the UK. Several are art galleries providing space for the exhibition of art (Holburne Museum of Art pictured), or are philatelic, regimental, science, aviation, transport, railway, toy, religious or sports museums, but the majority are local museums. There are also several historic house museums owned or managed by the National Trust or English Heritage. (Full list...)

The Denial of Peter refers to three denials of Jesus by the Apostle Peter, as described in the Bible. All four Gospels of the New Testament state that during Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, he predicted that Peter would deny knowledge of him before the rooster crowed the next morning. According to the narrative the prediction came true when, following the arrest of Jesus, Peter denied knowing him three times. After the third denial, Peter heard the rooster crow and recalled the prediction, causing him to cry bitterly. This picture is an oil-on-canvas painting by Gerard Seghers, depicting the Denial of Peter. It dates to around 1620–1625 and is now held by the North Carolina Museum of Art. Painting: Gerard Seghers
