Charles Scott (April 1739 – October 22, 1813) was an 18th-century American soldier who was elected the fourth governor of Kentucky in 1808. Orphaned at an early age, Scott served during the French and Indian War and returned to active military service in 1775 in the American Revolution. In August 1776, he was promoted to colonel and given command of the 5th Virginia Regiment, serving George Washington for the duration of the Philadelphia campaign. In March 1779 Scott was sent to Charleston, South Carolina, to assist General Benjamin Lincoln in the southern theater, but was taken as a prisoner of war when Charleston surrendered. After the war he resettled near present-day Versailles, Kentucky. Following the separation of Kentucky from Virginia in 1792, Scott commanded the 2nd Division of the Kentucky militia, which fought in the Northwest Indian War. 1633 – Ming Chinese naval forces defeated a Dutch East India Company fleet in the Taiwan Strait, the largest naval encounter between Chinese and European forces before the First Opium War more than two hundred years later.
1707 – In one of the worst maritime disasters in the history of the British Isles, at least 1,400 sailors on four Royal Navy ships were lost in stormy weather off the Isles of Scilly.
1895 – At Gare Montparnasse station in Paris, an express train derailed after overrunning the buffer stop, crossing the concourse before crashing through a wall and falling to the plaza below (pictured).
1924 – The educational non-profit organization Toastmasters International was founded at a YMCA in Santa Ana, California.
2015 – Sweden suffered its deadliest school attack when a sword-wielding man attacked students and teachers in a high school in Trollhättan, killing three people.

MLB MVP Award plaque

The Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) is an annual Major League Baseball (MLB) award given to one outstanding player in the American League and one in the National League. Since 1931, it has been awarded by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. The winners receive the Kenesaw Mountain Landis Memorial Baseball Award, which became the official name of the award in 1944, in honor of the first MLB commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis. MVP voting takes place before the postseason, but the results are not announced until after the World Series. First basemen, with 34 winners, have won the most MVPs among infielders, followed by second basemen (16), third basemen (15), and shortstops (15). Hank Greenberg, Stan Musial, Alex Rodriguez, and Robin Yount have each won at more than one position, while Rodriguez is the only player who has won the award with two different teams at two different positions. Barry Bonds has won the most often (seven times) and the most consecutively (four, from 2001 to 2004). (Full list...)

Alessandro Vittoria (1525–1608) was an Italian Mannerist sculptor, whose work was part of the Venetian classical style. Born and raised in Trento, he moved to Venice in 1543, where he trained and worked with Jacopo Sansovino. Vittoria is known for his classicising portrait busts, a genre that scarcely existed in Venice before him.

This portrait of Vittoria is an oil-on-canvas painting by Paolo Veronese, completed around 1575. It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
