Photo problem

[edit]

Could someone please look at the image I attempted to add immediately under the subheading here:

Thomas Jefferson#Declaration of Independence

This happens very rarely but it's not the first time where the image shows up fine on preview and then not on the published version, which is the case here. I greatly appreciate the assistance on whether this is a formatting error on my part, a glitch, or what. Thanks! Keystone18 (talk) 00:01, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Keystone18: If section preview works but not the full page then there is usually an unclosed tag earlier in the page. I fixed an unclosed wikilink in a caption.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 00:22, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And that throws off the images beneath it. Didn't realize that. Thanks very, very much! Keystone18 (talk) 00:25, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Using a picture file form the Australian National Archive

[edit]

Dear colleagues, I have no experience of this. I have found an image in the national Archive of the composer on whom I am writing an entry. Does anyone know how to get permission from the Archive for using such an image? The ID of the image is National Archives of Australia NAA 46135, K21/2/72/14. Can I have some leads please? Erictimewell (talk) 01:41, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Erictimewell: What's the license of the image? If the photo requires permission, you could ask the archive to review Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. GoingBatty (talk) 03:15, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Permission can be granted only by the owner of the copyright: the Archive is unlikely to be that owner. One possibility is that the image is old enough to be in the public domain: if so, you can upload it to Commons and use it freely. (You may find guidance at WP:NUSC, or you can ask about it at MCQ). Otherwise, you can get permission only if you can track down the copyright owner, which may be difficult.
Another possibility, if this is for an article specifically about the composer, is to upload it as non-free content. You will need to make sure that your use meets all the terms in the non-free content criteria - one of these is that it may be used only in an article, not in a draft, so if you are using this route, you should wait until the article has been accepted into the encyclopaedia proper. How to add A-class icon to page?

[edit]

I was wondering how to add the icon for  A class to the upper right corner of relevant pages, for example 19th Mechanized Division (Greece)? Cheers! Thinker78 (talk) 05:41, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That symbol is aleady on the talk page Talk:19th Mechanized Division (Greece). I don't believe that it is suposed to be placed in the article itself. ColinFine (talk) 09:31, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
But A-class articles are reportedly one notch above GA class. Therefore, I think its icon is probably supposed to be in the main page of the article. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 22:22, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No. Content assessments are placed on the relevant talk page. See Wikipedia:Content assessment. Shantavira|feed me 08:26, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my question is not about in general about assessment but rather placing the icon in the main page of the article as is usually the case fo Good Articles. Thinker78 (talk) 22:05, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Thinker78 Which Good Articles have the icon on the article page? That conflicts with the link that Shantavira provided; did you read that? Maybe those Good Articles that you know about should have the icon removed from their article page. David10244 (talk) 06:08, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is some misunderstanding here or you haven't seen Good Articles. It is the norm for them to have the GA icon in their main page so people can identify them. You can check them out at Category:Good_articles. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 21:05, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good articles do, but there's no extra icon for A-class articles. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 21:39, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Those are topicons, see {{topicon}} and the source code of {{Good article}} ([2]). However, I don't know if showing them is okay or not, despite them being one level above GA. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 21:55, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Thinker78 "It is the norm for them to have the GA icon in their main page so people can identify them." Ok, but, the guidelines, linked to by Shantavira, say not to do that... unless I am reading them wrong. David10244 (talk) 08:47, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@David10244, can you point to the part of Wikipedia:Content assessment where you see that? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:56, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How get article related to india?

[edit]

I get article from worldwide but i want read article related to india. How it can possible?? 42.111.13.150 (talk) 06:11, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP 42.111.13.150. "India" is a very broad topic and there are lots of genres and articles related to India on Wikipedia. If you go to the top of this page and enter "Articles about India" into the search box, you'll find there are almost 200,000 articles that appear to be related to India in some way. So, what you could try to do is search for something more specific instead; for example, if you want to read about Indian politics, you can try searching "Indian politics" and see what comes up. You could also try asking about specific Indian-related topics at Wikipedia:WikiProject India and see if any of the members of that WikiProject can offer any suggestions. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:28, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Is it just me or are maplinks/mapframes not working currently? They display as a link saying "Map" to a page that doesn't exist or weird bits of code. This issue of code being broken is appearing additionally in Demography articles (if I am assuming it is the same problem and I am not going mad here), take a look at Demography of Netherlands, Pakistan or even Britain, all seem to be broken with the come theme one being Template:Graph:Chart. Additionally Template:Image_frame is also broken as seen on Modern immigration to the United Kingdom, I have a feeling this is a site wide problem affecting many templates seemingly. Rolla Harger

[edit]

On the Robert Frank Borkenstein listing. Rolla Neil Harger (January 14, 1890 – August 8, 1983) invented an early breathalyzer, called the Drunkometer, to test for driving under the influence in 1931; he was awarded the patent in 1936. He was biochemistry and pharmacology department chairman of the Indiana University School of Medicine from 1933 to 1956 and worked as a professor in the department of biochemistry and toxicology from 1922 to 1960. Harger was born on January 14, 1890, in Sherman Township, Decatur County, Nebraska. He used Nebraska on his World War I draft registration and Decatur County, Kansas on his World War II draft registration</ref> He graduated from Yale University in 1922. Harger was an assistant professor at Indiana University School of Medicine in the newly formed department of biochemistry and pharmacology. In 1931, he invented the Drunkometer to test for driving under the influence. In 1938 he was one of the five people chosen to be on the subcommittee of the National Safety Council that drafted the model legislation that set the blood alcohol content for driving under the influence. 2603:800C:1F00:DA3B:606A:8A3E:FC0E:8420 (talk) 13:10, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is already discussed in both Robert Frank Borkenstein and Breathalyzer. If you think that more should be added, please open a discussion on the Talk page of the corresponding article. ColinFine (talk) 13:27, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipage

[edit]

Hi, We are a business and received an email from Elite Wiki Writers. I do not know if this is genuine however it has raised some interest in having a Wikipage about our business history.

I recognise Wikipedia is not a business promoting organisation so can we create a page about the history or our business and are Elite Wiki Writers genuine.

I look forward to your response and thank you for your assistance

Bimal Patel BeDredd (talk) 14:14, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@BeDredd: Hello Be! Do not pay these people. There are no "Elite Wiki Writers" here and it's a scam. Please follow the instructions at WP:SCAM. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:20, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Blaze Wolf, thank you for your quick response and advising us of Elite Wiki Writers. BeDredd (talk) 14:26, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, do not respond to unsolicited e-mails asking you to pay to have a Wikipedia article written they are scams!!! Elite Wiki Writers in particular is on our Wikipedia:List of paid editing companies under the heading "Companies blocked at least once". They have been blocked for not following the Policy:Terms of Use of this website.
Now, regarding creating a page about the history of your business, the answer is, it depends. Does your business meet the criteria outlined on this page, and are there reliable sources that were created separate from your company's involvement that discuss your company at length? If so, it's possible to create an article about your company. If not, it is not possible to create an article about your company. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:24, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Unicorn, Thank you for your quick response and advise regarding the requirements for the company page. I shall investigate further to check we fall into the criteria and sources. BeDredd (talk) 14:29, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a scanned image to a citation

[edit]

I have several citations that I need to make on an article I've written, but the sources are not online. I do, however, have scanned images of the source articles that I would like to upload/attach to my citation. How do I do something like this? Drawingonthepromises (talk) 15:48, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Drawingonthepromises: Hi there! You can use templates such as {{cite news}}, {{cite magazine}} or {{cite journal}} to cite sources that are not online, without having to provide any scanned images. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:51, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Drawingonthepromises, be aware that newspaper articles and the like are protected under copyright law, including scanned images of them. Uploading or even linking to such images may run afoul of Wikipedia's copyright policies - best not to do it. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:08, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also be aware that in this era of Photoshop, purported scans of articles are not considered reliable sources. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:43, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tabular userbox layout

[edit]

Hi all, I hope this is the right place to ask this. I'm trying to turn my userbox display, which by default is one userbox per row, into one that's organised in a grid layout compacting multiple userboxes into a neat box. What I'm going for is the style achieved at meta:User language#Usage near the bottom (you'll know it when you see it). How would I achieve this in the same way it's achieved on that page? I have it roughly done on my user page, but it doesn't conform to the page size and as such goes off the page past 100% zoom. Is there a simple way to do this? Any help is appreciated. - Cheers, KoolKidz112 (hit me up) 16:45, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A simple way to fix it is to only put 4 userboxes per row instead of 5. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 21:11, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's better than five, but when zooming in they still go off of the page. The MetaWiki's method uses templatestyles which I attempted but was unable to do because it wasn't sanitised CSS. I feel like if there is a way to use that style it would be the best option. - Cheers, KoolKidz112 (hit me up) 14:05, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved This has been fixed by using Wikipedia's built-in tables. - Cheers, KoolKidz112 (hit me up) 15:25, 21 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Pages with disabled graphs

[edit]

There's a bunch of pages linked to Category:Pages with disabled graphs but that category has never existed and I don't know what to do with them. —Lights and freedom (talk ~ contribs) 18:32, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Lights and freedom: I noticed this too. I wonder if something was done that made that category appear on any page that makes use of the graph feature. I would ask at the relevant section at WP:VPT. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:35, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Lights and freedom:, there is a notification at the top of my watchlist that reads Because of a security problem, the Graph extension has been disabled with immediate effect. More information will follow at VPT. Cullen328 (talk) 21:36, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Short descriptions different from those at Wikidata

[edit]

Hi there,

I had a question about using short descriptions different than the ones found at Wikidata. For a lot of them on certain articles, they aren't really informative (eg: on a given university/college article, it would only say "in X,Y,Z" rather than say "Arts school in X,Y,Z"). I haven't changed short descriptions on those articles given that it might mess things up, but I do think they can be way more informative than they are. My question is: if I change the short descriptions in the article itself, and not also at Wikidata, would that introduce problems? Please let me know. Thanks in advance! Losipov (talk) 22:06, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No, there's no issues with doing that; part of the reason we have local short descriptions and don't just use the ones from Wikidata is to allow improving the short descriptions for our own needs. Galobtter (talk) 22:22, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Losipov, the descriptions at Wikidata have a different purpose than the short descriptions here. On Wikidata items are identified by number not by label. Many items can have very similar labels in English (or any other language), so the descriptions are used to tell the difference between items with similar labels. Here they function as a meaningful short description of the topic. There is no need for the two locations to match. StarryGrandma (talk) 02:01, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Losipov. Just be careful about turning short descriptions into more lengthy descriptions. They should be informative but brief. Cullen328 (talk) 05:07, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328 I understand. The problem is that more lengthy ones are needed sometimes in my opinion because it gives more information in a clearer way (just a heads up, I've been trying to add and change short descriptions in a way that is both brief and informative, like you stated. I just wanted to make sure they were alright). But I do understand, like I said. Thanks for the response!
Also, thank you to @Galobtter and @StarryGrandma for the help. By the way, now that I recall, some of the short descriptions that I've come across seem to be vandalism or at the very least disruptive (at least in Wikidata). Is there someplace I can alert admins or whomever so they can take a look? Thanks again. Losipov (talk) 05:19, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Losipov, see d:Wikidata:Project chat. StarryGrandma (talk) 07:12, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
