[edit]Malware Hidden Inside JPG EXIF Headers
[edit]Does Wikipedia have server-side scanning to find and remove any uploaded images that contain malware? --Guy Macon (talk) 02:07, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Guy Macon, exploiting EXIF headers to execute scripts is a very well known technique. I would not doubt for a second that it has been patched in both PHP and MediaWiki for years now. Ed talk! 14:02, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Best way to individually search large amounts of people?
[edit]Hello!
I'm doing genealogy work and I'm looking for the most efficient way to put a list of family members through a Wikipedia search to see who might yield results. I know I could search them one by one, but I'm wondering if there is a plugin for Excel/Numbers or an extension for a web browser. I've looked at what extensions are out there, and I couldn't find one that would do batch searching. What would be amazing would be an extension/plug-in that would highlight any name or subject that has a corresponding Wikipedia page, like how Wikipedia links within itself.
Am I out of luck? Thanks in advance! MCGKD (talk) 03:12, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- MCGKD, hello! Welcome to the help desk, I am not sure what you are asking for but, Special:WhatLinksHere might help you! HeartGlow (talk) 03:28, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- MCGKD, if you don't get an answer here you could try Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). TSventon (talk) 14:09, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
New Christian, fictional book
[edit]Someone may wish to include information in Wikipedia about this fictional, Christian, short story, The Three Days of The Lion, Copyright 2014, All Rights Reserved, and its Spanish version, Los Tres Días del León, Copyright 2019. All Rights Reserved. It has received several Five-Star ratings, including by Amazon, Alibris, Treasures Christian Books, Russell Books and Dotcom Liquidators. It was critically reviewed by five representatives from the Writer's Guild of America and received a 9.2 out 10 rating, the highest cinematic book review rating in the history of the sponsoring organization, The Golden Rule Association, and was recommended for film production. The book was written in two weeks! The story is based on the Apostles' Creed and a true-to-life experience by the author, Jose M. Martinez, which began on Sunday, June 1, 2014, as the author sat in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Elk Grove, California, and lasted 60 days.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Thelionrisesin2025 (talk • contribs)
- Hello and welcome! Please be sure to sign with four tildes (~~~~). Can you please clarify on what you are asking? HeartGlow (talk) 03:30, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)@Thelionrisesin2025: Hello Mr. Martinez (or his representative), all Wikipedia does is cite, summarize, and paraphrase professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources, without addition, nor commentary. We're not a press release service. If an article is written about the book, please read our conflict of interest rules before doing anything relating to it. Ian.thomson (talk) 03:31, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- The two five-star reviews on Amazon are both from people who admit to knowing the author. And it's published by, well, the least said the better.--Shantavira|feed me 13:59, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Kieth Hymmen
[edit]My grandfather is Kieth Hymmen. His name is correctly spelled K-i-e-t-h.
The title of his page is incorrectly "Keith Hymmen". If you look at his biography, it is spelled correctly Kieth. Just the title is incorrect.
Also the first reference should be corrected to "Kieth Hymmen – Parliament of Canada biography"
Thanks,
Peter — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.206.176.23 (talk • contribs) 13:49, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

Citing oddity
[edit]Can someone look at cite 13 in Doppler radio direction finding and see what's wrong? It looks correct. Maury Markowitz (talk) 14:39, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Maury Markowitz: The publication year was 1989 in the short footnote, 2009 in the bibliography. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:39, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- sigh* Thanks! Maury Markowitz (talk) 16:49, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
How to prevent bots from removing red links?
[edit]https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_Essential_Mix_episodes
Is there a way to prevent bots from removing red links on this article? I want to link every DJ on this article, whether it is a blue or red link. I want to do this to promote research into unknown and/or undocumented DJs that appeared on this long-running radio show.
Teh (talk • contributions) 16:26, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- In other words, Teh, you want to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia for your research. Not going to happen. (BTW, it's editors removing ths links, not bots) --ColinFine (talk) 17:21, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe so, but not intentionally. Thanks for the reply. Teh (talk • contributions) 17:26, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- See WP:REDLINK for why we keep some items linked even if we don't have an article, and why some are removed. "Undiscovered" would mean non-notable. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 18:25, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

Edit conflicts with self
[edit]I am constantly getting into edit conflicts with myself. It's happening on a majority of talk page posts now. I click "Publish changes" and get the edit conflict page, but the edit is saved. My typical process is now: hit "Publish changes", open the "history" in a new tab, look at the history to confirm my edit saved, go back and close the original tab, confirming in the popup that I actually want to leave the page even though this means my changes will be lost. I can't believe that this is due to me accidentally double clicking the Publish button as suggested in Wikipedia:Help_desk/Archives/2019_July_5#Edit_conflicts_with_myself. - @Awilley: Suggest you post at WP:VPT. I think others may be experiencing a similar issue. RudolfRed (talk) 22:04, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Awilley: If this is happening on a standard computer, are you using the mouse to click Publish? If so, mouse problems can cause two clicks to occur, and that usually gives an edit conflict. Instead of clicking, move the focus to the edit summary (e.g. by clicking in that box), write any edit summary and press Enter. Pressing Enter in the edit summary box (assuming you don't have a script to disable the default behavior) will save/publish the page. Johnuniq (talk) 23:59, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- You may also try pressing the key combination Alt+⇧ Shift+S (publishes changes) and see if that bypasses the issue. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:48, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Modules
[edit]I want to practice using Lua, can I create a test module? And if so, what should I name it? Gioguch (talk) 20:17, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Gioguch: Something like Module:Sandbox/Gioguch/temp is the correct place. The "temp" can be any name but temp is not bad because you might replace the contents from time to time and a short, generic name can be suitable. Use Module talk:Sandbox/Gioguch/temp for tests, for example
{{#invoke:sandbox/Gioguch/temp|main|any|parameters}}
- Ask questions at WT:Lua. Johnuniq (talk) 00:04, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
George W. Bush
[edit]George W. Bush was the ONLY bush son after his father H.W. Bush to become president. Your wikipedia states he was the 2nd son to become president after his father. Which is false. The closest person in his family to presidency was Jeb Bush and Jeb never became president. As we know Jeb ran in 2016 and did not get the election. Please fix your wikipedia.
- I think you are confused, that refers to John Adams and John Quincy Adams. 331dot (talk) 22:44, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- I can see how that wording might be confusing. Perhaps it can be clarified in the article, in which case this conversation should be had on the talk page. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 22:52, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
Did You Know - Qanon post
[edit]I am trying to figure where I can view the discussions that lead to a blurb about Jim Watkins' QAnon super PAC becoming the first item in today's Did You Know section on the HOMEPAGE. Does anyone know how I can find that? It seems very inappropriate to feature such a controversial topic in a prominent way on the homepage. Xxavyer (talk) 22:55, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Xxavyer: The nomination is here. That is how it gets accepted as a DYK. As to how it gets selected for the first slot; that's mainly down to having an appropriately licensed photo that looks good at small resolution. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:01, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- There's no reason that articles on controversial topics cannot be featured in DYK, so long as the hook is neutral and accurate. Wikipedia is not censored. – Teratix ₵ 11:07, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
