April 7

[edit]
[edit]

I just noticed that the section in the left pane that normally links to pages in other languages is empty for the Help Desk. I seem to recall that it was populated at one point. Anyone know why we don't have links to the help sections at the various other Wikipedias? RudolfRed (talk) 01:07, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Probably caused by phab:T249565 incident, if there were links before. I don't know for sure. – Ammarpad (talk) 05:24, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks to be okay for me now, but it's probably related to that Wikidata problem. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:48, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the links are back now. Thanks RudolfRed (talk) 14:54, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

[edit]

I was just informed that some of my rollback reverts were being marked as "minor" edits. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? Thnx. Jerm (talk) 04:23, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

All of my rollback reverts are marked as minor. Jerm (talk) 04:48, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Give example of the edit marked minor. – Ammarpad (talk) 05:30, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
All of my rollback reverts like this one. No revert should be marked as minor. Jerm (talk) 05:36, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The minor edit flag is set by the software not you. That's because rollback is meant to be used on clear-cut vandalism cases where usage of minoredit flag is also appropriate. The revert being complained on your talkpage was not vandalism and so you should have used other means. – Ammarpad (talk) 06:00, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You used the rollback function, which is only supposed to be used on clear-cut vandalism. If it's not vandalism, use a different means of reverting, although depending on circumstances it might be better to discuss the edit with the editor first. You had to request access to rollback because it can be abused, and your access can be removed if people think you're not using it in compliance with policy. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 21:14, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My Old Account

[edit]

How do I activate my old account when I don't remember or password for it, but I remember having one because I had previously had the mobile app. Also, can you edit a semi-protected article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bcambrice (talkcontribs) 05:20, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you've email attached to the account, you can recover it via Special:PasswordReset. – Ammarpad (talk) 05:37, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need to be logged-in to use the Wikipedia app, and using it doesn't automatically create an account. Just saying, that might not mean you had an account. If you did have an account and you linked it to an e-mail address, you can get access to it as stated above; you will need access to the e-mail account, of course. If you recover that account but decide you like your current username better, no problem! Ask us and we'll tell you how to change your username.
You can't directly edit a semi-protected page currently, because your account is brand-new. But, you can request a change and someone will review your request. Hit "View source" on the page in question, and you should see a blue button near the top labelled "Submit an edit request". Follow that and you can enter your request. And thanks for helping improve Wikipedia! If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask them here! --47.146.63.87 (talk) 21:08, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No "bookmark" feature on the web

[edit]

On the android mobile app, I saved some articles. The are in what appears to be called my "reading list." The app provides an easy way to access my reading list by a small symbol in the lower left which looks like a bookmark. When viewing Wikipedia on a web browser, I don't see this "bookmark" or any way to access my reading list. Is the "reading list" feature only available in the android app? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drodarm (talkcontribs) 05:32, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. The "reading list" feature is only available on the App. – Ammarpad (talk) 06:02, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually not anymore. mw:Wikimedia Apps/Reading list browser extension. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 22:13, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Promote draft article to namespace

[edit]

I have previously created several articles in the main namespace and have been editing for quite a while now so have a fairly good idea of what is required, but am not an official page reviewer. Recently I have twice come across draft articles for new articles which I was going to create, and copyedited one and fairly extensively edited another (still a WIP, but not too far off good enough now). I can't seem to find a guide or direction on how to move the draft page into namespace, without going through an assessment process, which I don't think is necessary and which will cause unnecessary delays. Do I just do a straightforward page move, or is there a different process for drafts? The article in question is Draft:Vincent Namatjira. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:41, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Laterthanyouthink: No, there is no different review process. Since you already created some articles, you can do a straightforward page move, but if you are unsure whether the page would survive an WP:AFD its probably better to use the review process. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 06:12, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks, Victor Schmidt mobil. I'm pretty sure he's notable enough, and the article has enough detail and citations at this stage, so I think it's good to go. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 06:29, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ref 11 is from a journal. Please put in the publisher and leave in the quote. thanks 175.33.49.35 (talk) 05:45, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Done may you not use always the same discussion title please? :)--Pierpao (talk) 08:18, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Page pending acceptance

[edit]

Typically how long does it take for a wikipedia page to be reviewed? what supporting citations, references do we need in order for the page to be accepted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by StephaniePolystream (talkcontribs) 10:03, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@StephaniePolystream: Before you do anything else, you must disclose your employment. Ian.thomson (talk) 10:09, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to get a head line for creating a new page on Wikipedia

[edit]

Must like I did a headline now but it won't work on the create a new page area — Preceding unsigned comment added by SLROLRthefirst (talkcontribs) 13:16, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Go to Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Within it, you'll see a blue button, "Click here to start a new article". Below this blue button, you'll see "Here are some things you should have in mind". Read and think about those "things". After doing so, if you're still certain that a new article is appropriate, click that blue button and start writing it. -- Hoary (talk) 13:54, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

Hello I just have a simple question really, I'm just wondering how can my company be placed on Wikipedia?

I would appropriate any advice to my question

Kind Regards Lee Millward — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7F:3430:2700:9527:4034:BD2C:6648 (talk) 14:07, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Make your company so remarkable that independent, reliable sources will publish material about it, and people unrelated to the company will want to use that material to create an article. 119.245.72.212 (talk) 14:18, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Lee. The reply from 119.245 might sound flippant or unhelpful, but it is really the truth. Wikipedia is not for advertising or promoting anything - a company, an artist, a band, a charity - anything. It is an encyclopaedia, which contains neutrally written articles on notable subjects. If at some point Wikipedia has an article on your company, it will not be your article, it will be based not on what you say, but on what people who have no connection with your company have chosen to publish about it, and you will have no control over the contents. See an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. --ColinFine (talk) 16:02, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And here is an essay that makes the same point: WP:AMOUNT. Also, please do not get scammed by folks who will offer to write an article and put it onto Wikipedia for money. Those folks have no more rights than any other editor and unless the article meets our notability requirements, it will be deleted and you will have lost your money. -Arch dude (talk) 18:04, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oldest people article

[edit]

I follow the "Oldest People" article because it is interesting to me.

I notice that the tenth oldest man in the world, "Hyppolyte Cadou," is still listed as the tenth oldest living man, even though the Wikipedia "Supercentenarians who died in 2020" article lists him as having died around March 11. Another Googleable article describes in French his March 14 funeral. I tried to bring this information to the person who controls the "Oldest People" article, but I must not know the proper way to do that, because the information has been ignored. Is there a way I can do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.179.183.136 (talk) 18:32, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody "controls" any Wikipedia article. see WP:OWN. You are free to edit that article yourself. If you are uncomfortable with this, add a new section on the article's talk page, with your references. Better, add that talk page section, then delete the entry from the list with an edit summary that says "deceased. see talk." -Arch dude (talk) 18:48, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And, to clarify what Arch dude said: you posted that on your own user talk page (or, more accurately, the user talk page for the IP address you are currently using - it can change). It is very unlikely that anybody will see that, as that page is intended for sending messages to the editor using that IP address. Arch dude is suggesting that you post on Talk:Oldest people, where editors who have an interest in that article are more likely to see it (no guarantees, though!) --ColinFine (talk) 19:23, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That article is semi-protected, meaning non-logged-in users can't edit it. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 20:53, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Go here, hit "Submit an edit request", and put in your edit request. Links to sources would be appreciated. Thanks for contributing! If you wish, you may create an account, which will allow you in the future to edit pages such as that one, which are protected due to past abusive editing. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 20:53, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Could you explain, how should I remove dead link http://www.saltykov.net.ru/ from the page https://ru.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A1%D0%B0%D0%BB%D1%82%D1%8B%D0%BA%D0%BE%D0%B2-%D0%A9%D0%B5%D0%B4%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%BD,_%D0%9C%D0%B8%D1%85%D0%B0%D0%B8%D0%BB_%D0%95%D0%B2%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%84%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87

Please, don't answer that I should just edit it. Try it yourself first. I've alredy tried — there is no this link on the page in edit mode. There is no 'Сайт' (Website) property in the template. If I add Сайт=https://ya.ru this link is replaced with ya.ru, but I want to remove it, no to replace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.66.152.92 (talk) 22:42, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This help desk is for the English language Wikipedia. You can find the Russian equivalent at ru:Википедия:Форум/Вопросы. --David Biddulph (talk) 22:49, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this is a general question, and you can answer in English. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.66.152.92 (talk) 23:11, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably in one of the templates that generates the infobox, meaning you have to edit the template page rather than the article.
This link was from Wikidata, thank you.
Also here's a tip: you can copy-and-paste the article title and make an interwiki link, which avoids the big long Punycode URL, like so: ru:Салтыков-Щедрин, Михаил Евграфович. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 23:14, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I promise I'll use interwiki link next time!
Knowing how to fix that page will require knowing how to read Russian.
The link is ASCII, you don't need know how to read Russian.
Also, here on en Wiki, the preference is to fix dead links or point them to archived version. Russian Wikipedia may have same policy or similar. Please ask there. RudolfRed (talk) 23:17, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Saltykov-Shchedrin lived a long ago the internet was created and can't have Official Website. If someone has created a website about him it doesn't mean it's official.
