CAPTCHA Assistance

[edit]

Hello,

I am trying to edit an article and the CAPTCHA is preventing me from publishing my changes. It keeps refreshing with new CAPTCHA letters, even though I keep entering the information correctly. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trianamitsanas (talkcontribs) 00:52, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Trianamitsanas: check to see if ⇪ Caps Lock is off. —2606:A000:1126:28D:70DD:4A7F:C3B0:B649 (talk) 01:32, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, make sure that after entering the requested CAPTCHA you click the 'Publish changes' button, not the 'Refresh' button. The latter will always give you a new CAPTCHA because it's intended for when you really can't read the CAPTCHA offered. I myself have made the same mistake before. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.200.138.194 (talk) 10:17, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why do I have a formatting issue for Infoboxes on Wikipedia?

[edit]

Starting about a week ago, the English Wikipedia's infoboxes have shown up in an obscure format. Infoboxes appear on the left of pages, instead of the right. The infoboxes have lost their background, and some articles include bullet points. https://imgur.com/a/j6WLuX5 https://imgur.com/a/DpgotEK What is the cause of this unprompted abnormality when viewing the English Wikipedia? Looking at the rules, the help desk is only for edit-related questions. However, since this is more of a personal issue, I realize this may not be the most appropriate place to ask this question. Is there a more suitable location for this type of a question? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EphemeralVoltix (talkcontribs) 01:48, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello EphemeralVoltix and welcome to the Teahouse. I have been trying a few options but I can't reproduce what you're seeing. Can you please give use some more information about your system - what sort of computer, what browser, and what is the exact URL? --Gronk Oz (talk) 07:32, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Judging by the images you were not logged in, which rules out it being a problem with your preferences and CSS settings and point more towards it being a problem that is local to you. Try a different browser, if that works OK it will point to there being a problem with your original browser settings. - X201 (talk) 07:46, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@EphemeralVoltix: Your question is fine here. This page is for questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia. Viewing articles is covered by use. Try to clear your entire cache in the used browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:40, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a new wikipedia page or a new article?

[edit]

receiving the permission to publish an article

[edit]

To whom it may concern, I have written and sumbitted an article for approval at the beginning of February. This is the URL: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Peter_G._Stone

So far it still says that is in a draft format and I have not received any comments about it. May I ask you if the procedures I followed for its creation are correct? When will it get approved?

Looking forward to your reply,

Valentina — Preceding unsigned comment added by Valentitti (talkcontribs) 13:03, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Valentitti Welcome to help desk. the draft page was not submitted for review for such the draft was not in the pool for review. I have submitted the draft on your behalf. Please note there are above 2.5K draft waiting to be reviewed and the backlog is bout 8-9 weeks. If you draft page is accepted by the reviewer, than the page will be published. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 13:15, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Valentitti: it has happened already. Editor Lee Vilenski has already promoted it to article space, as Peter Stone (archaeologist).--Gronk Oz (talk) 13:52, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I should mention, I wasn't sure on if that's the correct disambigution (the article refers a lot to him being a chair of various archeology projects; but I'm a little unfamiliar with what this makes the subject.) Feel free to let me know if this is wrong (I also did a bit of cleanup before it could go on mainspace, as it was a little messy. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:50, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: and CASSIOPEIA thank you very much to both of you for your help! May I just ask you how can I change the title in 'Peter G. Stone OBE' or 'Professor Peter G. Stone' because there are also other Peter Stones on Wikipedia so this would help in recognising him. Plus looking at conferences papers this is the title normally used to refer to him. Let me know if it is possible. Thank you very much again for all your time and help!

How to change the automatic description under a person's name?

[edit]

The automatic description for Jerry Lee (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Jerry_Lee), that shows up for disambiguation, is currently: President of the Jerry Lee Foundation and President of Philadelphia Radio Station B-101 FM. Jerry Lee would like to change this to the following: President of SpotQ Services, Inc and President of the Jerry Lee Foundation. This is not something I cannot edit on Jerry Lee's article. How can this change be done?CCEBP (talk) 15:02, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'd put it on the talk page at Talk:Jerry Lee, or perhaps WP:BIO. To change this, it's the "short description" at the top of the edit box. However, if this is coming from the subject, or you are associated with the subject, there are issues around conflict of interest, and it may be best to stay away, and let someone else make the changes for you, if appropriate. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 15:20, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That information comes from the Wikidata entry: see d:Q15431113, CCEBP. But please note that Wikipedia is essentially uninterested in what the subject of an article wishes to be said about them: it is only interested in what reliable sources independent of the subject say. Since the article Jerry Lee currently has no independent sources whatever, it is not easy to see how independent sources refer to him. The important thing to do about the article (from Wikipedia's point of view) is to add independent reliable sources to it, and to make sure that there is nothing in the article which does not come from such a source. --ColinFine (talk) 17:24, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Henry Kloss page

[edit]

correction to page on Henry Kloss: Text says " In 1962, he collaborated with Ray Dolby of Dolby Laboratories to develop the "B" version of the Dolby noise reduction system to reduce tape hiss." This date should be 1967 not 62. Dolby Labs was not founded until 1965. David Robinson, Dolby Labs 1966 to 2005. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:645:580:3675:A168:7009:DF87:F9F3 (talk) 16:45, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPP Browser

[edit]

Does anyone know whether the New Pages Patrol Browser will be reinstated? For several days I have gotten this error page when I tried to use it. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:11, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Well Teblick, I have no idea. You could alternatively use the Special:NewPagesFeed. Lourdes 00:55, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lourdes, Thank you for responding. I like the browser because it groups new pages into subject categories, and I can often add material to new pages in categories with which I am familiar. I have used the New Pages Feed, but I become frustrated there because the lack of subject grouping makes it more difficult for me to find articles for which I have reference material that might be useful. Eddie Blick (talk) 01:23, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Eddie, unfortunately the browser is broken as the editor who manages it did not migrate it in time. More details here. Thanks, Lourdes 02:51, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Lourdes, Thanks for the additional information. It looks like I will have to just wait and hope for a successful migration. I appreciate your help. Eddie Blick (talk) 16:13, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mrinank Singh

[edit]

Hello I’m an india professional cricketer .My name is not displayed on Wikipedia I need help with this you can search me on espncricinfo which is the largest domain site for cricket player in the world or my Instagram- mrinank_singh

Will be glad if you could help me with this one — Preceding unsigned comment added by MrinankSingh (talkcontribs) 21:40, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@MrinankSingh: Please understand that Wikipedia is not concerned with your internet presence, we are all here to build an encyclopedia. You would only merit a Wikipedia article as a cricketer if you meet one of the notability criteria for cricketers. If you do, you may visit Requested Articles to request that someone write about you; it is strongly advised that you not attempt to write about yourself, see the autobiography policy. 331dot (talk) 21:45, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

edit a section

[edit]

Hi i wanted to add one more organization to the dutch list, to help out user General Ization, he seen it and requested to me to get final approval due to the source being dutch and he cant speak dutch but i can. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_Crips_subgroups

Eight Tray Gangster Crips is currently among the oldest active Crip gang in the Netherlands since the early 1990s , is an Multicultural-Gang in Netherlands

with proposing citation https://books.google.nl/books?id=MRMnio7vQGUC&pg=PA207&lpg=PA207&dq=eight+tray+crips+nederland&source=bl&ots=1I9a7aRzcH&sig=ACfU3U2dvmIl1wgN3qyytGOEvYuMTjSLNA&hl=nl&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiHo9TgobLhAhVCalAKHRO3D50Q6AEwFnoECAcQAQ#v=onepage&q=eight%20tray%20crips%20nederland&f=false

can we proceed with the edit? Apronsoftherestricted (talk) 22:02, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Apronsoftherestricted: You can raise the question on the article's talk page, or Be Bold and go for it. RudolfRed (talk) 22:32, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: Re: BRD, the editor already did and was reverted (so should not Be Bold a second time). The source they propose to use is in Dutch, which I don't speak or read well enough to advise them whether it reliably sources the proposed content. That is why I sent them here. General Ization Talk 22:35, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(I rather doubt the talk page of this particular article is frequently visited by editors fluent in Dutch). General Ization Talk 22:47, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@RudolfRed and General Ization can we agree to proceed to add it to the list then, as the talk page will not likely do alot. i am from the Netherlands and been living there for 35 years. It's one organization mentioned within the book created in the 90's. that's all.Apronsoftherestricted (talk) 23:03, 2 April 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apronsoftherestricted (talkcontribs) 23:01, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

i think you should mention it on the talkpage for discussion, and go ahead if you don't get feedback. there's no real rush, both sources are talking about the 1990s so i doubt these very small gangs still exist. also regarding the new source, if you want to add 'Eight Tray' from Groningen, why not add the Dordrecht group of the same name and the Bijlmer group called 'Traynity' which are also mentioned? It would be very easy for nonDutch speakers to googletranslate this information by the way, dutch to english goes pretty well. Mujinga (talk) 23:01, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Mujinga much appriciated.

Yes Den Haag, Groningen, Dordrecht, Bijlmer is the complete list. which also been stated in crips.nl https://www.bol.com/nl/p/crips-nl/1001004001951215/ but this book is no longer available. The groningen and Denhaag still exist and active after 30 years. Eight Tray Gangster Crips, ETGC also known as N.S.G.C North Side Gangster Crips,The title "Gangster Crips" umbrella labels you a Eight Tray. I live in Groningen my self, and visit Den Haag frequently. C.U.C Crazy Underground Crips was also created in the 1987 and still exist they had name changes to MTC (Main Triad Crips) later turned into Rolling200 Main Triad Neighborhood Crips Dutch official News NOS >https://nos.nl/op3/artikel/2093388-haagse-gangster-is-rustaaahger-dan-amerikaanse.html which now merged with Trailer Trash MC and created there own MC called calohwagoh Main Triad mc http://calohwagohmc.com/ and http://i1os.com/_fD0ksEkg5s.video+related

So i really want to contribute and make the Dutch list correct.Apronsoftherestricted (talk) 13:22, 4 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit Notice

[edit]

I made a request for an Edit Notice to be created for an article. The request appears with a "Title blacklist" notation on this maintenance page:

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_template-protected_edit_requests

Does "Blacklist" mean the Edit Notice request is malformed and cannot be completed. . .or something else? DonFB (talk) 23:27, 2 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Don't worry. It means the page name for the edit notice matches an entry on MediaWiki:Titleblacklist so it can only be created by administrators, page movers and template editors. This deliberately applies to all potential edit notices for articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:58, 3 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
