URGENT

[edit]

Hi, my name is Elliot Fletcher, I'm an actor and a transgender person and I have a small wikipedia page on here. The only problem is, someone has locked my wikipedia page with incorrect and damaging information. Because I am transgender, whoever feels that it is okay to put my birth name/ dead name on my page. This is extremely upsetting. My name is Elliot. It has been since the day I was born. I'd be happy to send a picture of my birth certificate if you don't believe me. It clearly states my name has been Elliot Fletcher since birth. I would like it to be corrected. Thank you.

The problem is that a Los Angeles Times article (about the parents) states that back in 2000, they had a four-year-old daughter not named Elliot, but rather what is currently in the article. We have to go by what we can verify from reliable sources. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:11, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

pretty cheesed my article was deleted djdarroo

[edit]

not really happy about getting my article deleted.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Darroo (talkcontribs) 03:01, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It was deleted because it didn't meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. Wikipedia article's subject requires significant amount of media coverage to have standalone article. You need to provide reliable 3rd party sources. Hope this helps. Fuortu (talk) 03:56, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Havelock Nelson

[edit]

Havelock Nelson was an Irish musician who was also a RAF doctor in 1940. I have an official photo of him at that time that belonged to my Irish mother. We often heard his name mentioned when we were children but he is not related to us in any way. I thought there might be someone (a family member perhaps) who would like to see this photo. I have never added anything to Wikipedia but have tried to create a user name and password (not sure where they have gone?) in an effort to upload this photo but without success — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.168.137.207 (talk) 03:24, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello and welcome on Wikipedia (WP),
"New" users cannot upload pictures directly on Wikipedia, but you can register on Wikimedia Commons and then link back the photo on Wikipedia (actually, I think the username/password you used to register here will work on Commons too); however, you will need to ensure a few things before doing so. (Wikipedia is the online encyclopedia, Commons is an image upload site, and Wikimedia is the foundations that operates both.)
  1. You need to have copyright of the picture and the (legal) ability to transfer it under Wikimedia's license. Notice that ownership of the physical photography does not necessarily mean you have the intellectual property rights associated with it. Assuming that your mother is deceased and you inherited from her, you will probably have the rights if she took the photography herself or commissioned a photographer for it, and you probably will not have them if she bought/was given the photography by someone else.
  2. You need to be aware of the implications of releasing the photograph under the license used on Wikimedia's sites (see link above). Once you released it, pretty much everyone has the right to do almost anything with it. In particular, you cannot ask that it be used only on Wikimedia's sites.
Wikipedia has an article about Havelock Nelson that could use a photograph. I would however recommend that you add citations to that article, to demonstrate HN meets Wikipedia's notability requirements. Let us know if you have any further questions. TigraanClick here to contact me 07:46, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. I'm afraid we probably can't use that photo. Wikipedia is much more careful about copyright than many sites, and usually requires that materials be explicitly released by the copyright holder under a licence that allows anybody to reuse them. Unless the picture is old enough that it is out of copyright (probably before 1923), or you can identify who is the legal owner of the copyright and they are willing to explicitly release it (see donating copyright materials) then I'm afraid Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons will not accept it. I suggest you find somewhere else to upload it, maybe Flickr. --ColinFine (talk) 07:24, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good clarification on the copyright isses, but your Flickr suggestion seems to imply that copyright violations are OK if they happen outside Wikimedia, which is obviously not the case. TigraanClick here to contact me 07:56, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I added a reference (cut and paste) near citation number 84 - (it would be number 85) but it has gone and also a whole section - with the sub-heading "James" - has vanished. Help Needed urgently. Thanks 144.139.149.95 (talk) 05:08, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. You forgot to close off the reference tag. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 07:25, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a new page for company information in wikipedia

[edit]

Hi,

I need to create a new wikipedia page for my company. The page was created by my colleague Jaspreet however her account got blocked thrice and even the page created was deleted.

Please help us understand if we can create a wiki article for company , writing about company and its products.

Also there was a article in the name of "ZyFin Research" which she tried to edit and created a "ZyFin" page with different introduction.

By doing this, ZyFin Research page was replaced with the new ZyFin page however it shows that page has been deleted now. Could you please help.

we tried searching your contact number/ chat etc to understand this problem how can we solve it but there was no information available to contact.

Kindly consider this on high priority and help us asap.

look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jamirms (talkcontribs) 05:38, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jamirms. I am afraid that, like many people, you have misunderstood what Wikipedia is for. It may not be used for advertising or promotion of any kind. You do not "need" to create a page, and if Wikipedia had an article about your company, it would not be your article and you would have no control over its contents. It would need to be based almost entirely on material written and published by people who have no connection with your company, and you and your associates would be strongly discouraged from editing it. Please see WP:ORG and WP:COI. --ColinFine (talk) 07:27, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • In addition to what ColinFine said, please note that the immense majority of editors here are volunteers. If any of them wants to stop editing in one area, or leave the project altogether, they can. So there is no real possibility to "consider this high priority", unless it is a legal matter with the Wikimedia foundation, which it most likely is not.
You could suggest to make an article about your company, but you will need to provide reliable, independent sources establishing that your company is notable - which does not mean "famous" or "peculiar", but rather "that has been the subject of independent attention". Failing that, the article will not be created, or will be deleted once created. TigraanClick here to contact me 07:54, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There has never been an article named ZyFin Research, nor ZyFin. The two articles deleted (as unambiguous advertising or promotion) were Zyfin and Zyfin Funds. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:06, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Changing a page image

[edit]

How do I change the page image on an article? By "page image" I mean the image that is used to preview a page before you go there. For example, here you can see the page image for Hail to the Thief is a photo of George W Bush, but that's not really a great image to represent the article. Popcornduff (talk) 07:58, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Popcornduff: The image is chosen automatically from the page. I think the main criteria are that it must have a free license and a height to width ratio in some limited interval. There are differnt ways to go to pages and it varies whether you see an image first. The images are used in mobile searches where they are cropped to a square. Write "hail" in the search box at https://en.m.wikipedia.org to see it. The cropping will often be bad if the height to width ratio was large. I suggest you just ignore the page image. Don't reshuffle images or choose other images to try to force a given image. It's not considered an important feature that should influence editing. Many readers never see it, reusers of Wikipedia probably don't use it, and the feature could change at any time. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:14, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, this is actually pretty much what I expected. As it's an automated process trying to "game the system" would definitely be a bad idea. Popcornduff (talk) 12:27, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Popcornduff, I have reported the problem to our developers on phabricator. You can log in at that site with your Wikimedia account and comment. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 14:38, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"Page information" links to Help:Page information. There I have now added [1] a link to mw:Extension:PageImages, where I made [2] an "Image choice" section. @Popcornduff: Out of curiosity, did you try the help link earlier, and would you have found the wanted information now? PrimeHunter (talk) 15:07, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find any help for this when I searched, and I checked the Wikipedia page about using images. Sorry, I'm not sure I understand your question. Popcornduff (talk) 06:38, 5 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Popcornduff: Your original post had the link "here". If you have "en - Englsih" as language at Special:Preferences then the top of here links to Help:Page information. I just meant whether you had clicked that link to look for help. At the time of your post there was no help for the "Page image" field. I added it later. It was also me who originally added the Help:Page information link to the top of "Page information" pages like here. I was just wondering whether you tried to use it but it's not important. Hungarian help desk?

[edit]

A new editor I'm helping at AFC wants to know how to transfer a draft, written in Hungarian, from Userspace here, to the Hungarian WP. I thought to refer them to the Hungarian help desk but there is no interwiki listed for a help desk at the Hungarian WP. Can a page be moved directly to a different WP or is cut/paste the only option? BTW does Hungarian WP have a Draft-space or something like AFC for the construction of new articles. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:14, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Roger, you can refer the editor to the Hungarian embassy at hu:Wikipédia-vita:Nagykövetség. In theory Hungarian admins can import articles, but it is easier to have the author copy-paste it himself to the Hungarian Wikipedia. I suggest he asks at the embassy what to do. The Hungarian Wikipedia does not have a draft space. If the editor wants to work on the article before posting he can do this in his own userspace sandbox, which can be found in the links on the top right of everyone's page (if he has an account). Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 08:36, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Taketa -- Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:43, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

name and page name

[edit]

Hi, did not know that the name and user name must be the same...so I attached my name and of course it does not work... cannot find an edit...then I tid to up;oad and I am told that my account has not been verified, indeed it has...how to continue.. thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Miriamjaskierowiczarman (talkcontribs) 11:13, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Special:Contributions/Miriamjaskierowiczarman shows your only saved edit is this post. You can create a user page at User:Miriamjaskierowiczarman. A user page automatically gets the username. If you want to create an article then its name is unrelated to the username. You can use Wikipedia:Articles for creation and choose a name. However, I fear "the name and user name must be the same" means you are here to make a promotional article, maybe an autobiography. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Autobiography in that case. Users can request another username at Wikipedia:Changing username. In your case with only this edit, it's easier and allowed to just create a new account. Spaces and capitals are possible in usernames so you could choose "Miriam Jaskierowicz Arman". Your account is email confirmed so you can use email, but it's not yet autoconfirmed which is required to upload files to the English Wikipedia. You can upload right away at commons:Special:UploadWizard if the file has a free license. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:55, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pyrotech Workspace Solutions

[edit]

I made a page name of Pyrotech Workspace Solutions. This page matter not copied form any where and It is only information sharing page not a promotional page. User: Gilo1969 deleted that page with A7 tag. I strongly recommend that page should not be deleted. Deepakpurusharthy (talk) 11:43, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pyrotech Workspace Solutions Pvt Ltd was deleted twice. Pyrotech Workspace was deleted 3 times. Pyrotech Workspace Solutions was deleted 4 times. You don't seem to be learning. The material you added to your user talk page in this edit was a copyright violation from http://www.pyrotechworkspace.com/ . You need to read all the useful wikilinks which have been provided on your user talk page. I have removed the {{helpme}} template from the beginning of this message, as that template is intended only for user talk pages, and I have also added a section heading. --David Biddulph (talk) 12:04, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
David Biddulph, I've indeffed this editor. Eleven creations of the same article means he is WP:Not here, and a failure to declare an obvious COI is a breach of our Wikimedia Terms of Use. Paid editors are required to disclose their employer, client and affiliation. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 12:17, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Nested Footnotes not working on Chhinnamasta

[edit]

Tried Nested footnotes on Chhinnamasta, but they are not working. Can't figure it out. Used <ref> within {{efn}}. Please help.--Redtigerxyz Talk 13:18, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Redtigerxyz: I've moved one of the "note" definitions outside the {{notes}} template. Unfortunately there is a software bug, phab:T22707, which stops nested footnotes working properly when more than one footnote is called from within the {{notes}} template. This is a pity, as your arrangement of the notes was very neatly coded. -- John of Reading (talk) 13:39, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Movie

[edit]

hi, I saw an excellent movie last night the cutting edge with Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney. I can't seem to find out did they actually do the skating in this movie and if not who were the skaters?

thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.132.173.121 (talk) 13:59, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Help Desk is for questions about editing Wikipedia. You could try asking at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Entertainment. Rojomoke (talk) 14:11, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) This page is for questions about using Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps. Abuse Filter False Positive

[edit]

Hi, I am trying to upload images to the page https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Draft:Melissa_Ann_Pinney and on one image it said there is another file already on the site with the same content. I did upload this photo the other day, but I forgot to save the page and so it's no longer present on this page. Furthermore, I tried to upload other images and it triggered the abuse filter autotranslate|base=Abusefilter-warning-baduploads. How can I fix this so I am able to add images to this page? I own all of the rights to the images and they are relevant to the page. Thanks.

Carlisilverman (talk) carlisilverman

Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives may be the proper place to report this. Pppery (talk) 17:24, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update 8/3/16 1:34pm CST: A couple of days ago I posted in the Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives page and they told me I didn't trigger an edit filter. I still don't understand why I am having this issue then. https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives#Carlisilverman

Carlisilverman (talk)

@Carlisilverman: you are triggering the filter on Commons[3]. TBH I'm not sure what problem the filter is trying to fix, but you can see some background here. I suggest perhaps you don't do a "cross-wiki upload" and try one of the other methods listed at the top of that discussion. -- zzuuzz (talk) 18:58, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

the use of footnotes that are not citations

[edit]

Are there any guidelines regarding the kind of footnotes that contain tangential or parenthetical information (not references) -- I'm looking or guidelines to help decide what kind of content should be in the main article, and what should be in a note? Thank you. Clockchime (talk) 17:24, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Clockchime, the only mention I can find is at Help:Explanatory notes, which is very brief. Articles that use such notes tend to follow the practices in use in journal articles in the particular field. StarryGrandma (talk) 18:04, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Have template only add category in main namespace

[edit]

I added some code an infobox I'm working on that will automatically categorize pages that need images into a tracking category. {{#if:{{{image|}}}||[[Category:Wildfire articles needing images]]}}. How can I make it so that it will only categorize pages in the article namespace? I know I've seen this down before... But for example, I don't want it to auto-categorize pages in the user namespace or samples on the template page. --Zackmann08 (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:22, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can for example use {{Main other}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:35, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

If you mean that you want to write a biography of a living person of Joseph Kamara, then read WP:Your first article and familiarize yourself with the Wikipedia policies and guidelines listed in the welcome message that has been posted to your IP address's talk page. Register an account, because it has several advantages. Use the Articles for Creation process to prepare a draft article and have it reviewed by experienced editors.
