Quotation box & URLs

[edit]

Hi,

I want to make a quotation box in my talk page, but unfortunately the box keeps being rendered as just the signature!

here's the code I used with the result:

Abderrahman (talk) 12:48, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

 • However, if I just remove the [http:// some link] it works just fine (the previous revision of the box)

Please leave your comments or messages below (you can use 'New section' button above). You can also e-mail me. Notes & criticism are welcome, and please do point anything that could be improved.

It's because the URL contains an equals sign, which has a special meaning when used inside a template such as Quotation. The workaround is described in Template:Quotation/doc.
{{Quotation|1=Please leave your comments or messages below (you can use 'New section' button above). Here I've added "1=" just before "Please leave" and "2=" before your signature. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:58, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks John =)
can you explain the n= (1= 2=...)? --Abderrahman (talk) 21:50, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There's an explanation in the first paragraph at Help:Template#Usage hints and workarounds. But ItsZippy is right, Tmbox is the usual template for talk page notices. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:18, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Might I suggest you use Tmbox? That template is actually designed to be a talkpage notice, so is much easier to use. I use that template at my talkpage, if you're interested in what it looks like (I transclude it from this subpage). ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 22:24, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Actually Tmbox works better. Thanks for the suggestion =] --Abderrahman (talk) 09:16, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

quercetrin

[edit]

Chemical structure of quercetrin is wrong. Please double check. If you google it, you will find the correct structure. Two -OH groups were misplaced. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Principian (talkcontribs) 01:39, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have copied your comment to Talk:Quercitron, where it will be seen by the editors most interested in this subject. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:24, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I copied it also to Talk:Quercitrin. —teb728 t c 19:34, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you are referring to the bioflavonoid complex commonly sold as a nutritional supplement, the correct spelling is "quercetin." Other spellings are likely modifications, used as tradenames for a particular company's formulation, but the article name should be the name of the bioflavonoid.

New to Wikki

[edit]

Hello Guyz,

I'm the new customer of wikipedia and I would like to add some data on my account. How can I do that ?

please explain . I need more information about Wikipedia as well.. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aditjosh (talkcontribs) 04:31, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for registering an account. I see that another editor has left you some introductory links at your talk page; the first of those links, to Wikipedia:Introduction, would be a good start. If you are planning to contribute to the encyclopedia, then your "user page", which is named User:Aditjosh, would be a good place to describe your interests. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:30, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Help desk

Is there a Chinese version of Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors? Because i am also work on a Chinese article and need copy edits. If so, can you provide a link?--NeoBatfreak (talk) 05:11, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found this page, which appears to list editors who are willing to copyyedit pages, though given how sparse the introductory text is and how bad machine translation is, I'm not completely sure.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 05:29, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

English Usage

[edit]

On this page - http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial/Keep_in_mind - the phrase "if you have made notable accomplishments" is used. This is poor English as "accomplishments" are simply owned or attributed and the word is similar in use, for example, to "qualifications" or "faults". A more correct composition might be, "if you have notable accomplishments" or even, "if your qualifications are significant" or, "my faults are many".

I would have practiced my Wiki skills on this but I couldn't find a way to edit this page. I hope this comment is helpful and not too pedantic?

Brian Smith 81.149.57.132 (talk) 09:40, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I changed it to "if you have notable accomplishments". Thanks for pointing that out. The reason you could not edit the page is that it was "semiprotected" to protect it from vandalism. —teb728 t c 10:09, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to know how do I add an actor who has worked a lot to wikipedia?

CDC data primary source

[edit]

I found an editor who used numbers from the Centers for Disease Control WONDER database without interpretation in the article Sudden infant death syndrome#Epidemiology. They took the government's number straight out of the database without any manipulation at all. The database says, "2006 Cause of Death, Sudden Infant Death Syndrom - SIDS, Death rate per 1000 = 0.55" and that was put into the article. It was tagged as violating the WP:PRIMARY policy. I believe this does not. Can I have an informed opinion? Is it OK to simply restate data from a government table with out any interpretation or arithmetic?

In general, no. Wikipedia depends on secondary sources for all of its information. Reliance on primary sources - in this case, raw data - requires the author to interpret the data and come to a conclusion. That's what we generally refer to as "original research," which is something else we try to avoid. By relying on secondary sources, the conclusions have already been drawn for us, which makes verification of our information much easier, and also allows us to provide information on separate viewpoints regarding the same data. In this case, it looks like there is in fact some interpretation happening: "SIDS was responsible for 0.543 deaths per 1,000 live births in the US in 2005.[13] It is responsible for far fewer deaths than congenital disorders and disorders related to short gestation, though it is the leading cause of death in healthy infants after one month of age." That italicized sentence is not referenced, which (while I don't doubt its veracity) implies that it's an observation of the author rather than a paraphrasing of a secondary source. We also don't know how far "far fewer" is; is it a difference of a few dozens or a few hundreds? It's not clear, and individual concepts of how far "far" is may vary. I hope this helps some, but if you need more clarification, please feel free to let us know! Hersfold (t/a/c) 18:16, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What sort of place is Wikipedia?

I have just started editing and have not been impressed. I have now been banned for being someone I am not.

What sort of place is this? Argcontrib (talk) 12:11, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you are not the accused person, there's no way your underlying IPs will get a match to the checkuser to get you a block. You don't have to worry if you are innocent. However you should note that using multiple accounts or IPs to make it look like different editors is not allowed. --lTopGunl (talk) 12:31, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article completed. Wat's next ?

[edit]

Sir/Ma'm I have completed an article, which is now available for discussion. (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User:Vikas11004315) .

What will be the next step ? How should I assign a title to the article ? How will it be finally published ?

Emotional Therapy

[edit]

I wish to upload (edit)an article about Emotional Therapy but the page automatically reverts to Emotion Focussed Therapy which is not the same thing and prevents the edit. I have no problem with the link, there is room for both, but it is incorrect that they are the same thing.Dgshayes (talk) 16:45, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If you type emotional therapy into the search box, you will be redirected to Emotionally focused therapy. Once you are on the page, just under the title it will say (Redirected from Emotional therapy) in small letters. Click the link there and it will take you back to the redirect page. Make sure that you've read Your first article and that what you have in mind is a sufficiently different topic before you create the article. Other than that, I wish you the best of luck with it. Drop me a note (here, or at my talk page) if you need any further help. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 16:49, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your drafts here and here, however, it appears to me that you are seeking to publicise the Foundation for Emotional Therapy. I am sorry to tell you that Wikipedia does not accept promotional content. Furthermore subjects must be "notable" in the sense of having received substantial coverage in independent reliable sources. —teb728 t c 00:34, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect Spelling Of Product Name

I am the creator of Mystix Juggling Sticks. I searched "Devil Sticks". Under Evolution, my product name is mispelled - Mixstix. the correct spelling is Mystix. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.34.26.185 (talk)

Mixstixs seem to be an interesting spoon/drumstick product, totally unrelated from Devil sticks. [1] [2] I can find a few unreliable sources which seem to suggest that Mystix are a juggling stick. [3]

As far as I know, there are no current vacancies at the Wikimedia Foundataion. When there are, they tend to be advertised around the various websites. If you just want to contribute to Wikipedia, you can do that right now, either as an unregistered contributor, or by registering an account. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 22:31, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You can review the current open Wikimedia positions at this page. However, and I do not mean this to be rude at all—every one of us was new once—but I think it likely they expect a decent amount of editing experience, knowledge about the project and competency with the interface (though there is an intern position). A few things about your post, such as that you are not registered, did not know to sign and even that you needed to ask this question, are flags that you are relatively inexperienced.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:30, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
