Article(s): Painted turtle
Request: Please make the displayed image, be the lady biologist kneeling and holding a turtle (see 1:25). The displayed sign is confusing as the words mean nothing and are not mentioned in my article. Having a better displayed start, makes the video do more double duty as an image. And also, will drive more people to try it. (also, as majority of users will need to use the supplied links (because of browsers), I want to make sure the file serves as an image at least, and also to motivate them to do a couple of clicks to get there.TCO (talk) 07:36, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): Done - with humblest regards, this is not a problem with the video, it is a problem with your lack of wikicode knowledge. Also, if you made this video can you reupload it without watermarks and no titles or whatever? They distract from the video, make it harder to be multilingual, and go against policy (in the case of watermarks anyway). If you have any questions, shout! Cheers, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nesnad (talk • contribs) 15:50, 7 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you so kindly! I didn't do the initial conversion or shoot the video (am incapable of doing either.) Video is a donation from state of Oregon government (took some diplomacy to get it). Now if you can make it run for people who are using Explorer, Safari, Chrome, etc. (i.e. most of our site's readers, most of the casual Internet surfers) then I will really think you are a god!TCO (talk) 16:36, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Request: Remove background and make it either white or black, whatever looks better. For the second image remove background and lamp and extend grey gravel all the way. Gryffindor (talk) 16:01, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): I am not marking this as "done" because last time I helped out in this workshop, I was told my skills were not up to par with everyone else. I felt the need to help again, but realize someone might be better than me. So I offer my work here as an intermediate until better work can be performed. Enjoy, Nesnad (talk) 18:01, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks, the background is good. But cutting the bottom part is not what I had in mind. The image should be the same 3x4 proportions as the original. Gryffindor (talk) 07:09, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

An average of the previous four versions (by Smalljim)
Article(s): Ellen DeGeneres
Request: There has been some to and fro with this image, with two users trying to correct exposure and Commons:User:Gage reverting every time. So I need some advice here what to do with this image. Try to correct this or leave it as it is? I'd especially like to know which version looks best on other calibrated monitors. Thanks! Morn (talk) 09:55, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- Well, I think everyone would agree that it has a severe colour cast that needs correcting. It's also too saturated. The dark robe is a bit of a problem as there's very little detail available in there to mitigate the expanse of black - if it's lightened it turns an unnatural grey. I've uploaded a version that improves the colour and the saturation. It's also had noise reduction and some sharpening applied. Interesting to hear what others think. —SMALLJIM 11:58, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- Here's my attempt. I don't think the color cast is that serious and it probably can't be removed without making the image look unnatural. Also, I think your (Morn's) version had the contrast set way too high and is really oversaturated as a result. I should note though that my monitor is far from calibrated and I don't claim to be any sort of expert in this. —Quibik (talk) 13:04, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for your input Smalljim and Quibik! I think getting her skin tone right is the main problem here. Smalljim's version is a bit on the bluish side on my monitor; Quibik's is quite neutral if perhaps a litttle too pale. Maybe I should solicit Gage's comments here to find out what he was looking for. --Morn (talk) 16:00, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- This is very interesting. The dark areas in PawełMM's version are *far* too blue on my monitor; and Quibik's and Morn's versions still look rather too warm, as if taken under tungsten light - perhaps that is the intention? Morn's is nice and cheerful, but has lost detail in the highlights (hair and cuff), Quibik's seems slightly greenish in comparison (all IMHO, of course). Compared to these, I agree that mine might be a little cold, and a bit dark.
It certainly shows up differences in monitors and/or personal preference. Perhaps it's an exercise that should be regularly undertaken here. Anyone with a fully calibrated monitor care to comment or supply a version? —SMALLJIM 15:50, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

- The dark areas in Pawel's version are #020053, so they are indeed a dark blue. I think keeping the photo on the warm side is a good idea, because she visibly has a tan on the unmodified photo, so her skin shouldn't come out looking like ivory as it did in Nightscream's version (in the file history of the original photo). I think loss of detail is almost unavoidable, because it's the nature of white point/black point adjustment that her cuffs and gown, respectively, will end up looking more or less pure white/black. Maybe this comparison also shows the limits of automatic thumbnailing: Coming up with an adjustment that works equally well at all sizes isn't that easy. A full-size photo has more detail and therefore does not need as much contrast and saturation to make the image understandable, but a thumbnail really suffers if contrast, saturation, and sharpness are subpar in the unscaled image. Therefore different resolutions might require slightly different adjustments. --Morn (talk) 17:07, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

- Well, now she's had just about every conceivable skin color: blue, yellow, red, violet, brown,... She's like the Star Trek alien of the week. :-) Today I'm looking at these photos on a bigger LCD without color management (the way most Windows and Linux users probably do) and still can't decide which version is best. Perhaps the quality of the original image is simply too low after all to do anything really outstanding with it. --Morn (talk) 14:41, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
- There's certainly a wider range of what is considered acceptable than I thought there would be. I've mixed together 25% of each of the four alternatives - does that provide an acceptable compromise? —SMALLJIM 22:19, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a very good mix I think. It looks pretty natural at full size, but at the same time it has enough punchiness at thumbnail size. I wonder if Gage would revert again if I replaced the original with version 5? --Morn (talk) 23:20, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

Request: Please, remove the words from the backpage that can be seen in the background. Thank you, Lecen (talk) 17:55, 21 March 2011 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): I've cleaned it up, getting rid of dust and marks and I also removed some of the background text but not all, its really engrained in the image. Fallschirmjäger ✉ 19:32, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- That's I want to do. I uploaded an (little bit) improved version of the picture. Could you work on it? Also, I also have another picture (a painting, in fact) which I was wondering if you could improve somehow. I'd like to see the white line to the middle removed and (if possible) the color of both sides corrected. If you take a a careful look at the floor, you'll see that the color is not the same. However, dont feel obliged to work on the second picture. Do it only if you have interest and is able to improve in it. Since you've always helped me a lot and have outstanding skills, I believe there is no one else better around. Regards, --Lecen (talk) 20:09, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the nice comments :) I've worked on the newer version of the first image and its probably as best as I can get it. The blue colour text still faintly showing is too mingled with the image to really salvage. I shall take a look at the second one soon. Regards, Fallschirmjäger ✉ 23:20, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
- They both look amazing! Thank you very much! Cheers, --Lecen (talk) 02:53, 23 March 2011 (UTC)
- On the second image color was equalised and contrast of down corners was improved. PawełMM (talk) 09:12, 23 March 2011 (UTC)

Request: There are 3 scratches in the photo, all of them to the right. One to the upper-right, other two at the middle-right. Could they be removed? There is also a dark line at the upper right that I'd like to see removed. Lastly, if possible, improve a little bit the overall quality of the photograph. Thank you very much, Lecen (talk) 15:45, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
