In recent years this editable internet encyclopedia in many language versions has been widely used as a reference. Especially so by international students as at the IHS. For example, the articles on City and Urban planning have been consulted 46921 and 35036 times respectively during last May. For researchers and students wishing to share their expertise the public at large, Wikipedia is an appropriate medium. However, editors of Wikipedia need to understand the special working principles of this medium. In the short course Introducing Wikipedia & IHS we discuss these topics. How should we use Wikipedia, is it reliable? How can we improve Wikipedia by corrections and additions? And by writing new articles, uploading photographs, longer texts and other files?

I am temporarily with the IHS to help with a donation of a collection of slides to Wikipedia and to stimulate experts and students to write about urban development themes on Wikipedia.
We would like to extend an invitation also to IHS alumni to join this project by contributing your photographs relevant to urban studies or your improvements to Wikipedia-articles. Perhaps you like to share for instance images from your city or town based on the following general themes covering each city or town:
Living in the city
Urban land
The Urban Economy
Urban Infrastructure
City Planning and Development and
Cities and Climate Change which more or less correspond to the six specializations mentioned above.
If you want to join, it is important that you register on Wikipedia and become a "user" (editor). Just click at the button "Create account" in the upper right of any English Wikipedia-page. Registering does not oblige you to anything. Most users choose a nickname as username. If you like, you can provide your email address. Then Wikimedia can send you a notice when some one wants to contact you on yout Talk page (button in bar at the top right after registering) on Wikipedia. No, you will not be spammed!
If you subsequently want to upload your photograph - if it is not a duplicate - to Wikipedia, you can click “Upload file” under Tools in the left column menu on each Wikipedia page. Your image will be added to Wikipedia's image database called Wikimedia Commons. In the upload procedure you will be asked in what category your image should be put, e.g., Illuminated buildings in Bangalore etc.. You can search beforehand in Wikimedia Commons to find out whether your image adds information and in what category it belongs. Please give your photo a descriptive distinguishing filename on Wikimedia Commons.
