Projects delivered
[edit]Strategic Goal 1
[edit]Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.
- I trained participants from school students to radio presenters at the BBC's 100 Women Editathon, helping to raise awareness of the Wikipedia gender gap and to address it by contributing new pages on notable women such as the BBC's 100 Women.
Strategic Goal 2
[edit]Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.
- Members of Wellcome Library staff attended a Wiki-Club session and continued to develop their skills and add and improve pages.
- I scheduled a meeting with Navino Evans, Sean McBirnie, and the web redevelopment team here at Wellcome Trust, at which we discussed how Wikidata could be integrated into the redevelopment of the website, with the potential to provide data to wiki and context to enrich the information available on the Wellcome Library.
- I met with Alasdair Brooks of the British Red Cross to discuss how the organisation can be involved in wiki-activities and provide resources to facilitate editing at some of our upcoming medical-themed editathons. He is going to work on a webpage covering some of the key figures in the organisation's history so that it can be used as a source to help people to find information and create articles on notable figures in medical history.
Strategic Goal 3
[edit]To support the use of the Wikimedia projects as important tools for education and learning in the UK.
- I met with Dr Jess Wade to discuss plans for holding editor training sessions with school students.
Projects/events in development
[edit]- Plans are advancing for editathons involving the Liverpool Medical Institution, the Royal College of Nursing and the British Society for the History of Medicine.
- I've been continuing work with the Medical Women's Federation and we hope to have some sort of editathon in 2017.
- Dr Jess Wade and I will be reaching out to schools to plan editor-training sessions themed on women in science.
- I've scheduled some Wikidata training with Navino Evans to help me to see how and where it can be used in conjunction with Wellcome Library and Wellcome Trust work.
Press about the residency
[edit]- I was interviewed on the BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast Show by Nicky Campbell about the BBC's 100 Women Editathon.
- Shortly after this, I completed an article page for Catherine White (doctor), who was nominated as an inspirational woman by BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast Show presenter Rachel Burden: as a result of this, various tweets shared the article link and information about Wikipedia & the gender gap.
