Overarching goals of Wikipedia Longitudinal Project:

  • Use the EBM skills taught in the course (identify a gap or error, search for sources to provide the missing information, assess the validity of the sources, apply the evidence to the article and communicate in a clear lay language format) as an applied exercise to improve Wikipedia content
  • Expose students to the world’s most used medical resource, enhancing understanding of its benefits and flaws, and helping make it better for others

DIL (students only) 60 minutes – TBA

  • Students will sign up for the dashboard, work together to review their page and work on the page critique (mandatory, ungraded). This assignment will be due Oct 28th – tutors will have until Nov 4th to review the papers.

SGL (tutors and students) 60 minutes – TBA

  • Student meet the tutors, there is a short presentation on secondary sources for Wikipedia (why/how) and assignment 2 details (literature search). Divide and conquer areas of focus for the article together with the tutors – every student leaves with a single focused area for their work on the page.

DIL (students only) 60 minutes – TBA

  • Students work on assignment #2 – literature search (individual one page each) but handed in as a group with copy to tutor. This assignment will be due at midnight Wednesday Nov 6th and we will ask the librarians to prioritize the marking to have it done by Wednesday Nov 13th at noon.
  • MAKE SURE YOU KEEP A COPY OF YOUR ASSIGNMENT: YOU ARE GOING TO PLACE A COPY OF IT ON YOUR SANDBOX WHEN WE DO EDITING TRAINING ON NOV 11**

SGL (tutors and students) 120 minutes TBA**

*note we will have a Wikipedia faculty training meeting for 90 minutes over lunch preceding this session (noon-1330)
First hour = Faculty and students work together to plan the changes to the page based on the papers found in the search, go over the sandbox posting plan and make sure faculty can access everybody’s sandbox via the dashboard.
Second hour = Wikipedia training Link to Slides

DIL (students only) 60 minutes Wednesday November 13th 1630-1730

  • Students work on assignment #3 – individual planned changes to the page. Post your rough work and evolution on the sandbox to allow for more iterative feedback from tutors as you proceed.
  • note no class for the next week to allow the changes to evolve and develop – changes on sandbox and talk page to be posted (due) at midnight Monday Nov 18th.
  • One other task - THIS IS IMPORTANT! Using the instructions on the project resource page under the tab "Community Consensus: How to use the talk page" please post all of your group's planned targeted changes on the talk page also by midnight on Nov 18th. You will need to watch for commnunity feedback about your changes and reply on the talk page. This is an important part of being a good citizen of Wikipedia!

  • Students and tutors will work together to make their changes online – start/finish the editing work. There will be support from Dr. Dawson to guide those changes and she will be available afterwards for questions and additional support as needed
