[edit]- How will you decide which pages to exclude specifically? firefly ( t · c ) 07:58, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- Hey firefly, thanks for the question. The bot will ignore pages with the following criteria:
- With the template {{Surname}}
- In the category Category:Organisms
- In the category Category:Species
- With a title that starts with "List of works by"
- With a title that ends with "in popular culture"
- With a title that starts with "Lists of"
- With a title that starts with "Index of"
- With a title that starts with "Glossary of"
- In a particular denylist, which any page can be added on request
- I've determined these based on guidance at WP:TAXONORPHAN AND WP:CANTDEORPHAN. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 17:14, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

- Hey firefly, thanks for the question. The bot will ignore pages with the following criteria:
- Dab pages and all other explicitly marked index articles will also need to be excluded (I take it that the bot operator is already aware of th. I've got a question though: what timeframes will the bot use? For an article that has been recently created, tagging is usually not helpful (the assumption is that if the creator is working incrementally, it will take some time to improve the article and add backlinks). For very old articles, on the other hand, it's not clear if the template will need to be added in the first place: {{orphan}} suppresses its visual output after some time, and its only function is to categorise (so for those articles, the bot's addition may get close to cosmetic territory). – Uanfala (talk) 16:02, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- @Uanfala thanks for the question, I was not previously aware that the orphan tag suppresses it’s output after some time (looks like it’s 2 months). I think that this bot will tag all pages created within the last 2 months (on the long end of things) (e.g. for right now May and June), and for the short end of things, it will tag 5 days after creation. I would love some feedback on this timeframe. I’ll also add some more notes on other index pages excluded in the task description, thanks. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs | please use {{ping}} on reply) 17:05, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- I feel like this could use input from the NPRs regarding the time frames. The way I see it, if an NPR reviews the page, they will tag it as an orphan if it is indeed one. If it goes over two months without a review, then adding the orphan tag is mostly pointless. In other words, is this bot really necessary? If the NPRs do not have orphan checking in their workflow then I suppose that answers my question, but it would be good to find that out. Primefac (talk) 19:01, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
- @Primefac, thanks for the question. I've taken a look at WP:NPP and orphan tagging indeed seems to be a part of the NPP review process. This bot would probably be better as some sort of database report. I'm going to withdraw this BRFA. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs 21:00, 23 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
