UTRS
Can you have a look at UTRS appeal #95613? It looks to me like an innocent victim of a proxy block that you placed, but obviously without magic CU ability I don't know for sure. JBW (talk) 18:18, 31 October 2024 (UTC)
- They are definitely operating from a proxy, one with quite a lot of users. The specific problematic user operating from that range tends to add unsourced content around American football, so this is clearly not the same user. You are free to grant IPBE if you wish, as I've definitively cleared that user. I'd much rather they stopped using the proxy, though. Let me know if you need more info! --Yamla (talk) 18:29, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

Question regarding paid editors
Hey Yamla. I was curious about a comment you left during an exchange with a user requesting an unblock. They said that they were a company owner and not an employee. You said that makes them a paid editor. I always interpreted the policy as: if a person is receiving (or expecting) compensation as part of their job, then they're a paid editor. But if they have an ownership stake in the company/organization, then they fall outside the definition of employee. Are we now interpreting it so that owners are paid editors too, because they are drawing an income from their business? --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 14:38, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- This is a good question. It's how I interpret it, but I'm not meaning to state here that this is how the community interprets it. I think we are both clear there's a conflict of interest, correct? I wonder if we should take this question to WP:VPP? I'm happy to do so, what do you think? --Yamla (talk) 14:56, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh yes, it's most definitely a conflict of interest if they intend to edit technology topics. I know other admins have refused to unblock these types of editors unless they promise to initially edit about topics unrelated to their COI. I'd be interested to hear the response from VPP about the interpretation of the paid policy regarding business owners vs employees. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 15:15, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Okay! I'll post there and let's see what the experts say. --Yamla (talk) 15:17, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#WP:PAID_if_owner_of_company. --Yamla (talk) 15:26, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks - I see it's spawned a spirited discussion! Honestly, it doesn't matter to me what the community decides... I would just like some clarity on what the paid editing policy covers. Then we can all be consistent with what we communicate out to users. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 19:41, 4 November 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I've been following along. In the end, whichever way the consensus goes, I think the combination of WP:PAID and WP:COI means the end result (though not the communication) ends up the same. Good discussion! --Yamla (talk) 20:11, 4 November 2024 (UTC)

Saarabout
Hi there. I've just seen that you've declined Saarabout's unblock request. Upon reviewing the evidence further, they do seem to have a case that they weren't engaging in vandalism. The content they added does indeed seem to have been copy-pasted from the source website. That's likely a copyright violation and their attitude seems unserious, but I'm tempted to give them another chance. What do you think? Cordless Larry (talk) 20:36, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- I have no objections, but I don't think they'd be a constructive editor. A lot of the information they were posting was outright incorrect. Smallest quark, cesium atom being the largest atom, etc. Possibly their best chance of success would be to suggest edits rather than edit any article directly. I want to be clear, though, that's not me trying to impose a requirement. I have no objections at all if you (the blocking admin) decide to lift the block with no restrictions at all. --Yamla (talk) 20:43, 5 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll lift the block and keep an eye on their edits and will act if they don't prove to be constructive. Cordless Larry (talk) 20:46, 5 November 2024 (UTC)

Speaking up
Hi Yamla, apologies for bothering you again. I want to ask you to take a review at the unblock of my account on Wikimedia Commons, I was blocked by Taivo for 1 month again due to copyright reasons. I have explained everything in my Commons user talk page at the very last bottom when you scroll down to the unblock review. Please review it and unblock me. Because I have pledged to not further upload copyright violations. Here's the link to this. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:KhantWiki#/editor/41 KhantWiki (talk) 14:58, 6 November 2024 (UTC)

Appealing Topic Ban on Article Creation
Hi Yamla, last year I was unbanned from Wikipedia after 4 years away and I was given the condition of an indefinite ban on article creation that was appealable after no less than six months of constructive edits. I believe that since I have returned I have made constructive edits throughout the MMA community and was hoping I could lift my ban on article creation as I believe I would be a valued asset to Wikipedia. I promise to ensure that the Fighters articles that I make meet the required notability for MMA here at Wikipedia. When you unbanned me, I was told to come appeal to you directly on your talk page if I wanted to lift my topic ban on article creation. And I believe I'm ready now. Many thanks, Ricky. Rickyc123 (talk) 03:59, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
- I will reply on your talk page. --Yamla (talk) 11:42, 9 November 2024 (UTC)
Ban appeal
Is there any way to remove the ban tag on 23prootie. Based on the ANI discussion on Theparties, the ban may be lifted? I just want it removed because I might be blocked again as a sockpuppet of 23prootie. Theparties is my main account now but it is still tagged as a sockpuppet. Is there any way to make the unban official? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theparties (talk • contribs)
- Your ban has been lifted. I'll go remove it from that page. --Yamla (talk) 20:54, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
Woy Woy railway station
I see you semi-protected Woy Woy railway station for block evasion. Now it seems possible that evasion has extended to the talk page. Looking at the flurry of activity on Talk:Woy Woy railway station since 8 November 2024 you can see a new user and three unique IP addresses all making edit requests. A one-off would be ok, but four edit requests looks like a taunt from one user. I am hesitant to semi-protect the talk page as it would shut down the only method new users have to make suggestions. On the other hand, semi-protection may be appropriate. Hence I am asking you for a second opinion. Commander Keane (talk) 01:23, 11 November 2024 (UTC)

IP mistakenly blocked
Hi Yamla,
I'm CitizenZorro, a Wikipedian. Yesterday, after I didn't login here for some 9 months, I got the following email:
Someone (probably you) recently logged in to your account from a new device. If this was you, then you can disregard this message. If it wasn't you, then it's recommended that you change your password, and check your account activity.
Help Change password
It's true that I have new device now, 🙂
replaced the old one I was using because it falled to the water. So i didn't really pay much attention to that.
But after few minutes I got a message that was saying "the IP I'm using" was blocked by you. 🙄
I didn't understand what is that, So i had logged out and in again and there was no blocking at that moment and I successfully made some edits.
Today, I was just reading some articles on Wikipedia (without logging) and I had suddenly again got blocking messages 🙄 but now, when I'm with my user everything is OK and I don't see any blocking.
Can you tell me please what is that? I think that I have some connection problem with my internet network at home, and that my "IPS" are changing all the time.
Even I'm still not so sure of that, I need to check with them.
Just want to make sure it's a one mistake, and that the IP you have blocked is of someone else.
Thank you and best regards. 🙏 CitizenZorro (talk) 12:11, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- Lots of blocks only apply to logged-out editors. Also, lots of Internet service providers frequently change IP addresses for their customers. There's nothing suspicious going on here. --Yamla (talk) 12:17, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- It was a little bit strange to me, because as i said i didn't login here for some 9 months and surely didn't make any edits from IP number.
- I think it's more of thing that I need to check with my internet network, I don't have a good connection lately.
- It's surely effect the IP also. CitizenZorro (talk) 12:51, 18 November 2024 (UTC)

IP Unblock Request
Hello there, would you be able to unblock IP address 114.10.45.73? My friend would like to create an account, and is very interested in contributing to Wikipedia.
Best regards, Bollardant (talk) 14:19, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
- No. Please ask your friend to disable their proxy and wait a full 24 hours, then they should be able to create an account themselves. Note there's an abusive user operating from that IP address range. --Yamla (talk) 15:25, 23 November 2024 (UTC)
Am I doing better?
Hi. I've been trying to act better and make better edits on Wikipedia, can you let me know if they're good? BananaBreadPie12 (talk) 18:52, 24 November 2024 (UTC)
Collateral damage
I keep getting mentioned in this[1] and other related places. I have tried to stick up for myself on my talk page, culminating in this[2] but am rather at a loss how to prove that this is nothing to do with me. Are you able to reassure me that the admin community has moved on from presuming that I am involved?
Thank you for any help or guidance that you can provide. ThoughtIdRetired TIR 17:03, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- As a WP:CHECKUSER, I am simply not permitted to tie IP addresses to accounts. Assuming that you are not engaging in WP:LOUTSOCK, probably the best advice I have for you is to state unequivocally that you do not edit while signed out and to encourage admins to block IP addresses without anon-only. That wouldn't rule out WP:MEAT but would significantly weaken any claim around WP:LOUTSOCK. Remember, most admins simply cannot see the technical evidence so have to make decisions based on behaviour. Even the technical evidence is never iron-clad, and it's more challenging when that isn't available. Note that I'm literally not permitted to say anything more based on technical evidence. Nobody reading this should take this to mean I am making any claim whatsoever about WP:LOUTSOCK in your case because I mean to make no claim whatsoever. --Yamla (talk) 17:48, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- OK, as usual, everything is more complicated than it first appears. What gets to me (got to me?) is that a proper analysis of behaviour should show that if I am in a dispute with anyone, I give reasoning to my position (perhaps, as a failing, at too great a length). I have been on the receiving end of abuse, but I don't think I have ever dished it out. That doesn't seem to be what this ip editor is doing.
- Thanks for your answer. I am just going to carry on my normal editing activities as I reckon if anyone thought I had done anything wrong there would be something more substantial on my talk page by now. I think I have already made my position pretty clear and that has been willingly accepted by the other identifiable editor in this matter, the target of the ip editor's attack. (I might disagree with some of their editing, but I respect them as a person, despite the odd bump in the road.) ThoughtIdRetired TIR 19:59, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – December 2024
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2024).
Interface administrator changes
- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.
- Technical volunteers can now register for the 2025 Wikimedia Hackathon, which will take place in Istanbul, Turkey. Application for travel and accommodation scholarships is open from November 12 to December 10, 2024.
- The arbitration case Yasuke (formerly titled Backlash to diversity and inclusion) has been closed.
- An arbitration case titled Palestine-Israel articles 5 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 14 December.
Possible new DylanPuma20 sock
Noticed a possible sock of DylanPuma20 today, however their edits while close is not quite the same, and I'm uncertain if I should file an SPA. Jeffrey R. Clark • talk • contribs 23:40, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure that's quite enough. Looking at the editor interaction analyser, there's some overlap but not enough, either. If you see more overlap with earlier socks, I'd say that's enough to file. Especially when combined with the specific timeline of the prior block and the new account creation here. --Yamla (talk) 23:47, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Yea, that's what I was thinking. I'll just keep an eye on them. This person is slowly learning to mask their edit's but tends to fall back into a clear pattern. Jeffrey R. Clark • talk • contribs 23:52, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
Dubai Scripter
I don't think it matters much if they're a paid editor. They've got just over 50 edits and pretty much all of them are either direct personal attacks, in contravention of arbitration sanctions regarding the Israel / Palestine conflict or both. I don't think they'll be around for long. Simonm223 (talk) 13:38, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Also a non-trivial number of deleted edits of a clearly promotional nature. --Yamla (talk) 13:50, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

Continued issues from KindHorta
Hi Yamla,
Sorry to bother you with this, but wanted to lyk @KindHorta has been hounding me (in addition to leaving transphobic forumy comments and pledging to edit a page in a WP:PROFRINGE way). I left him a message on his talk page pinging you, which he characteristically blanked, so I'm letting you know here with a link to the pre-blanked copy of the page and discussion there. [3] I'd report at ANI or something, but given the IPs/sockpuppeting considerations which you're already aware of, I thought this made more sense. There's been years of homophobic/transphobic/downright weird problematic editing by this guy, think it's a straightforward WP:NOTHERE.
Best regards, Your Friendly Neighborhood Sociologist ⚧ Ⓐ (talk) 23:53, 14 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not the right admin to tackle that, it would be better if another admin took action. That way, it's clear that it's more of a community thing rather than just a single admin targeting that user. --Yamla (talk) 00:36, 15 December 2024 (UTC)
Sock?
Hello, Yamla,
After the new editor attempted to recall me, I looked at the date they mentioned (Oct. 8, 2023) and I did soft redirects from 3 alternative user pages for User:Alpoin117 after that user page was deleted. That is what we do when editors delete their User page and so a User page from Meta shows up in its place. But it doesn't look like this editor has been socking recently and I don't know why they would hold this grudge for other a year when my actions had nothing to do with them being blocked. Thanks for dealing with this. Liz Read! Talk! 23:54, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
- I'm very, very sure they are a sock of someone. I suspect some sort of LTA, though, rather than Alpoin117. I'd be surprised if Alpoin117 had kept up to date enough to know about the admin recall process. --Yamla (talk) 00:01, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
- Well, then I'm mystified at why I was targeted. But every time I try to understand sock behavior when I participate in a SPI case, I am told that I'm wasting my time and to just shrug my shoulders and move on. Liz Read! Talk! 04:02, 20 December 2024 (UTC)
