Proposal for new help page for new bot-developers - opinions?
I think there is confusion on how to go about starting a bot (eg here and here) and there is no wikipage covering this, the main bot page talks only about policy, not avenues for getting started, how to make a bot etc. I have made a suggestion that a howto page be established and, as a frequent editor helping out with bots, I would appreciate your comments. Many Thanks - PocklingtonDan 07:55, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Comment
My computer is having problems at the moment. I am trying to delete one edit in my page because the computer keeps on logging me out and records my IP on one of my questions - can you fix it for me please? Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:02, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- It keeps saying " A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was:
(SQL query hidden)
from within function "Article::insertOn". MySQL returned error "1205: Lock wait timeout exceeded; Try restarting transaction (10.0.0.236)"."
- Else it says you are not an admin. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:03, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, it works, now. You can see that I have suppressed the IP edit and will reinsert it. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:04, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- I have reinserted it now, in its exact form. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 01:05, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
the changes are based on an old canadian textbook i have recently acquired. While some of the information is out of date i have checked with professor Theda Perdue at the University of North Carolina and she assures me that the newly provided information is true. My associate Valerie Thom and I have uncovered this treasure yet sadly the condition has left many pages tattered hence the revisions not thouroughly backed by citation. Please and thanks —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Johnstamos11 (talk • contribs).
Byte diff sizes
Most likely, no. I know it was introduced to match the anti-vandalism bots "revision size" report, but that's about it. Everything I know is by hanging out at #wikimedia-tech while the devs are discussing it, but I don't think they've actually written down anything. It's probably up to us to do so, either here, in meta, or at mw:MediaWiki.org. Titoxd(?!?) 07:04, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
Protected templates used in MediaWiki namespace
Regarding [1], noinclude does not work in these templates, probably due to the same bug that is the reason these templates were created in the first place. Also, because they are templates used in the MediaWiki namespace, they are protected as de facto MediaWiki namespace pages, and like all pages there do not have meta-templates about protection. —Centrx→talk • 09:38, 24 December 2006 (UTC)
RuneScape WikiProject MfD
On Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:WikiProject RuneScape, you closed the discussion as No Consensus-Default Keep. I would, however, like to inform you that I'm suspecting Kalai Eljahn and Pyrospirit of vote fraud, per this edit. I will be filing an RFCU for these two users, and will give you the link shortly, in case that particular vote would have influenced your decision in closing the MfD.--Ed ¿Cómo estás? 01:43, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi
Thanks for mopping WP. As a user of flesh and blood, rapid editing is permitted for my research purposes. I will bring the welcomebot to the RFB when have concluded my research. Thanks again. frummer 01:38, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- my research is very important as it is part of a larger project to establish certain facts about wikipedia that web analysts are contending amongst themselves. the main factor is that wikipedia does nothing about a certain issue that is wreaking havoc. no welcomebot has ever been approved and I hope you can participate in the talk when i put in the request. with my rapid edits i was trying to establish new user's awareness of their contributions. very dismal. frummer 01:52, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

High Speed Editing
It looks like you've been doing some high-speed page creation (>6 pages/min) of an idetical nature, if you would like to run a welcomebot please request a bot flag at WP:RFBOT so as not to flood the NewPages and RecentChanges logs. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 02:21, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- I don't use any bots. I don't even know how to write one. What you are seeing is the result of George Money's Auto Welcome script. He has welcoming users down to just one click in most cases. Do I still need the bot flag? Instructions for the user of that script are at User:GeorgeMoney/UserScripts. Will (Talk - contribs) 02:30, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Question
I'd like to know why my entry on Steve Brook was deleted please. What does nnbio mean in the log? If it means not notable biog, then there are plenty of other self placed entries in Wikipedia that deserve deletion.
I'm particularly concerned as I had only written a couple of sentences.

Fair enough. The article was very flimsy to begin with, and the only support the authors initially provided was a blog. --Mhking 16:30, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

- I've changed the format a bit, because Templates for Deletion works differently. Instead of transcluding the link to the old MfD debate, I have pasted the debate directly into the TfD daily log. This is because the transcluded link was confusing (in a subsequent debate about a different template). I hope you don't object, but I did want to notify you about this. The old MfD debate I turned into a redirect to the TfD daily log. Sam Blacketer 22:51, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Protection of WP:BAG
Hi Xaosflux. I'm wondering, could you clarify the reason that you protected Wikipedia:Bots/Approvals group last week? I've got three reasons I don't think it should be. Firstly, robchurch is no longer a sysop - should he wish to edit the page about a committee-type thing he's on, it seems silly that he'll have to use {{editprotected}}. Secondly, I'd like to make a few copyedits - not enough to waste a sysop's time with the aforementioned template, but still, something I'd like to do. Thirdly, I don't think there's much of a risk of random users adding themselves to the group, or for that matter, vandalism.
Would you consider either elaborating on why you think it needs full protection, or semi-protecting because of what I've listed above? (If you'd like me to post this to the talk page, I will.) Thanks! Picaroon 20:11, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
De-semiprotection of my userpages
Can you please re-semi my userpages? The reason I've had it on so long is due to vandals who create user accounts and flood my userpages with at least 100 barnstars. In fact, theres already been two attacks since unprotection. Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 14:41, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, but actually, NwwaewBot (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and NicksBot (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) are doppelganger accounts, and there is no bot powering them, at least not right now- I have ideas to make a bot using AWB, but as of now, I dont have a bot. Nwwaew (Talk Page) (Contribs) (E-mail me) 13:34, 10 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I've changed to support the bot. Half the WP:BAG members willing to block the bot if it does something it isn't supposed to do is enough for me. :) --Conti|✉ 20:36, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Xaosflux,I am Dos lingo Real name David R.Lee.I do not have the foggiest why you claim that I am a sock puppet. My IP is 205.188.116.201 normally, sorry to evade the block but either you or Redvers has blocked so that I can not dispute this case and according to what I have listed below,I am accorded that right. I have contacted ARIN and this is what they have told me; "Hello:

Xaosflux,do you have or know any one who has AOL? If so then please do the following Change the area code to 540 and select the first of only two numbers to dial in Roanoke,VA (540 725 9801)and go to whatsmyip.org and I bet you will understand my concern after doing so. So Xaosflux, whats the deal? Is it that Wikipedia assigns AOL users who Dial up from the above mentioned number? If so then that means all of Salem,Roanoke,Roanoke County,Bedford,Bedford County, all of Franklin County as well with all of Pittsylvania County and other Cities are block because of one user?. A good chunk of SouthWest Virginia with well over 3 million people. That sounds like Collateral Damage. Now having said that.....

Dear anon, I'm truley at a loss for where your problem is. Please provide a link to the block that I placed so that I can help you resolve it. I don't know whether there is any differences between these two licenses and other fairuse licenses or not. Can you please tell me about it. Is it replaceable image image:Ianking.jpg? Does it have correct information?
- One more thing, I found some images that've fair use but no rational. In that case I added fair use rational for saving those images.Am I doing right?
- Or else Do I have to add appropriate tag on these type of images whenever I find them? e.g.{{subst:frn}}, {{subst:refu}} or equivalent. Thank you nahid talk to me 2007-01-23

Your block of 茶山
Hello. You blocked 茶山 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) indef for "username/POINT vio". They have requested unblock, which I am inclined to grant. Per WP:UN#Names_with_non-Latin_characters, such names appear to be allowed provided they are accompanied by a transliteration. I can't find any objectionable contributions or warnings, and I can't follow the comments on their user talk page about anonymous edits and image uploads due to a lack of diffs. Would you like to give your opinion on this, maybe on the user talk page, before I perform the unblock? Sandstein 06:13, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
OK, now I find the problem image. The block was warranted because of this. I'll deny the unblock. Sandstein 06:31, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

Commons Picture of the Year - still on?
There has been little traffic on Commons:Picture of the Year/2006 recently. Are we still going to do this? re Un Protecting
I did not realize that I was going that fast. I was just working on the protected userpage backlog In the future I will make sure that I keep my rate lower. I just wasn't paying attention to my rate. Hello! I was wondering why you'd changed my semi-protection to this article to full protection? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 11:36, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. perhaps you should wait to replace the templates until the wording is OK (and other people have had a chance to discuss it). The wording that you placed looked as though the template was fully protected. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 17:43, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
Hi. Just a note that despite the clear requirement for an {{essay}} tag following the MfD, Radiant is still expressing ownership over the page, and has removed the essay tag and put it back in the help cat again. --Barberio 15:23, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
- Well, actually, the page is a help page (Category:Wikipedia help) in that tells new users the definition of a term, rather than an essay that gives some kind of opinion. Also, out of about a dozen participants, only two people (other than Barberio) mentioned the "essay" tag. >Radiant< 16:26, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
