Growth team newsletter #29
Welcome to the twenty-ninth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Community Conversations
The Growth team will host its first community conversation Monday, 4 December (19:00 - 20:30 UTC). The topic for this meeting will be Mentorship.
This first meeting language will be English, but we plan to host conversations in other languages, and about other topics. Please visit the conversation page on-wiki for the details on how to join. You can also watch the page, or suggest ideas for upcoming conversations there.
Impact Module
At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [1]
Add a Link
We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [2] [3]
We have a few Wikipedias remaining:
- German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
- There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.
Community Configuration
- We shared Community Configuration 2.0 plans with technical stakeholders. [4] 🖂
- Initial Community Configuration design ideas have been shared and discussed with community members.
- A basic Community Configuration 2.0 demo is released on ToolForge.
- Developers can find some initial proof of concept code shared on gitlab.
Mentorship
When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [5]
We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [6]
We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [7]
It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [8]

Best of luck
Hey Wugs! I just wanted to wish you luck in the ArbCom elections. This time around, you were the only no-brainer, easy vote for me, though I did support several others with some additional consideration and/or research. I've had some concerns about the growing remit of the committee in very recent times, so it's more important to me than ever that we have thoughtful, carefully deliberative hands at the wheel. That's you, for my money, and I just wanted to let you know how glad I am you are standing again, so you know the level of appreciation out there, for at least one community member. My fingers are crossed that I'll be able to congratulate you on the start of a new term soon, as well! SnowRise let's rap 03:32, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- I appreciate the kind words, Snow Rise. I'm glad you did some research and came to support other candidates too; it's a good field. I wish we had more people step up more often, but it's not surprising why we don't. I'm not too worried about the outcome either way though. Worst case I get to tinker away at some workflow peeves for a while in the hopes of making life easier. Best case most of my workload gets foisted onto a new cohort eager to learn the joys of political office. Neither seems that bad. We'll see what's in the cards come mid-December. — Wug·a·po·des 09:16, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Message regarding Capricorn from Daask
In Capricorn's list of available redirect options: I see "Works of art and works generally, To: Writer" When I check this box, it adds Template:R from writer. I was expecting it to add Template:R to writer or similar, which appears to have been deleted. I would probably move it to the group "Related information, From" where Template:R from person is currently found. Daask (talk) 16:57, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

WugBot and the GAN Report page
Wugapodes, the GAN Report page wasn't updated on 27 December; it's lately moved from updating at 01:00 to 11:08 UTC, but yesterday was a complete miss. Is there a reason why it switched times, and can we get back to the traditional 01:00, or is 11:08 the new normal? This change in times also has affected the WugBot function that moves approved DYK nominations (now at :36 after the hour, and sometimes every hour, rather than every odd hour on the hour).
I figure that there's something up with the times that of various bots run; I've noticed that Lowercase sigmabot III, which normally archives WT:DYK at around 02:00, moved a week ago to shortly after 09:00, and since then has been archiving DYK at around 14:00.
Anyway, I thought I should inquire about WugBot's new schedule. Hope you're having a good holiday season. Good luck in the Arb elections, which may have its scruting done sometime tomorrow, or at least one scrutineer finishing by then... BlueMoonset (talk) 01:58, 28 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi BlueMoonset, sorry the changes were related to something discussed on the DYK talk page and I didn't realize the impact it would have on timing. Basically, the old system for running bots is getting shut down and I had to migrate to the new system. The old system let me be really specific about timing, but the new one seems to be slightly more random without some more tweaking. In general the stated preference on the technical side is to give broad timelines of like "daily" and "hourly" and let the server schedule things to avoid load spikes unless timing is critical to the task, so that's probably why a lot of bots are shuffling their timing. — Wug·a·po·des 00:40, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Admins and edit filters
Hello friend. A minor correction, if I may. and unbundles from sysop the ability to view non-public parts of our anti-spam infrastructure
. I think all admins are able to view private filters by default (you can confirm by going to Special:UserGroupRights, searching "abusefilter-view-private", and jumping to the 4th result), so I am not sure this statement is accurate. Just wanted to let you know in case you want to strengthen your nomination statement. Happy holidays :) –Novem Linguae (talk) 00:56, 29 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm, looking into this, it seems like the table at WP:UAL is a mess when compared to Special:ListGroupRights. The short version is that I meant "unbundles" in the same way that page mover unbundles moving pages without leaving a redirect: it's an ability granted by default to administrators but which we spun out to non-sysop user groups. The long answer is that the technical implementation is a bit wonky. Sysop comes with
abusefilter-view-private
outright (despite UAL not listing that on the table), but it is also granted by the Edit Filter groups. UAL says that EFH and EFM both grantabusefilter-view-private
, but Special:LGR doesn't have that listed. I gather that multiple rights allow viewing private filters, and both EFM and EFH are ways to "unbundle" that ability from admins even if the specific right that allows that differs. — Wug·a·po·des 01:35, 29 December 2023 (UTC)- When I think of unbundle, I think of something like unbundling autopatrol from admins, which removed it from their toolkit and made it a separate right. But not worth quibbling over. I just wanted to make sure you knew that regular admins that are not EFM or EFH can still view private filters. Anyway, hope that helps. See you around! –Novem Linguae (talk) 01:52, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Today's story is about Maria Callas, on her centenary. - Aaron Copland died OTD, and Jerome Kohl (mentioned in November) said something wise on Copland's talk, - yes, regarding a soft(er) stance towards infoboxes. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:41, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

Back to arbitration (and I probably don't have to tell you, but for equal opportunity with the other candidates): did you check out the history of the infobox of Callas? Compare Jessye Norman, Kathleen Ferrier and Jenny Lind. Did you check out the history of Copland? Compare Max Reger, Max Beckschäfer, Colin Mawby (from today's story), and Benjamin Britten (who died OTD). What's the difference? If what you see changes your answer to my question, feel free to change, and ping me. I would like to see a way to avoid in the future hundreds of editors commenting on Mozart RfCs, just to kind of restore the infobox he had in 2006 ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:41, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
Today, I managed to get the pics to snow (on 28 Nov), and heard a lovely concert, after listening to a miracle of meditative dreaming on 6 December (or just click on music). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:29, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks in advance! --Marinos Ioannides 94 (talk) 10:44, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Marinos Ioannides 94, I looked through a couple, and they're very helpful! Thanks for your contributions, and let me know if you have other questions or need help with anything. Happy editing! — Wug·a·po·des 18:32, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks
Thanks for your contributions as part of ArbCom. Martianmister (talk) 20:05, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
- I came here to echo that thanks. I imagine it is a bit frustrating to narrowly miss out on being re-elected (though you may well come to realize it was a lucky escape!), but I wanted to chime in with my appreciation for your contributions there, in particular your thoughfulness on complex problems (irrespective of whether anyone in particular agrees with your specific conclusions). Martinp (talk) 16:43, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks Martianmister and Martinp! It's never fun to lose, but our electoral processes only work if we have people willing to be told "thanks for volunteering but we went with someone else". Honestly, I'm happy we had so many good editors step up that I got more free time to do the content work I've been putting off. Thanks again for the well wishes, and I hope you and your loved ones have a good and productive new year! — Wug·a·po·des 06:03, 1 January 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I would rather not grouse at length and thereby undermine the appropriate graciousness of your reaction, but suffice it to say, I still think the outcome is a real shame. Without wishing to sound like a pessimist or a contrarian, and without wishing to bad mouth any of particular volunteers on the committee, I think the remit of ANI has grown by unprecedented leaps and bounds in the last few years, while simultaneously both the level of overall experience and the sense of self-restraint for the average Arb has been on a slight downward trend. I was really hoping to see you in the mix for the next cycle as a reliably steady hand, and I'm pretty surprised by the result. All that said, at least we get your energy fed back into day-to-day editorial and administrative work, so an upshot there! Thanks for your dedication to the project in all its forms, Wug! - Realizing I'm a bit late to the party, but I wanted to say thank you for your work on the Committee. I think it's a loss for us that you weren't re-elected, although I appreciate your gracious take on it above. Regardless of what titles you carry, though, I'm grateful for your thoughtful and diligent work and I hope you continue to do it. Take care. MastCell Talk 01:32, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Pages that use the JSON contentmodel will now use tabs instead of spaces for auto-indentation. This will significantly reduce the page size. [28]
- Gadgets and personal user scripts may now use JavaScript syntax introduced in ES6 (also known as "ES2015") and ES7 ("ES2016"). MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the
requiresES6
option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [29] - Bot passwords and owner-only OAuth consumers can now be restricted to allow editing only specific pages. [30]
- You can now thank edits made by bots. [31]
- An update on the status of the Community Wishlist Survey for 2024 has been published. Please read and give your feedback.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar). [32][33]
- Starting on January 17, it will not be possible to login to Wikimedia wikis from some specific old versions of the Chrome browser (versions 51–66, released between 2016 and 2018). Additionally, users of iOS 12, or Safari on Mac OS 10.14, may need to login to each wiki separately. [34]
- The
jquery.cookie
module was deprecated and replaced with themediawiki.cookie
module last year. A script has now been run to replace any remaining uses, and this week the temporary alias will be removed. [35]
Future changes
- Wikimedia Deutschland is working to make reusing references easier. They are looking for people who are interested in participating in individual video calls for user research in January and February.

Feedback requested
Hi, Wugapodes! I've been working on a draft proposal over at Wikipedia:2024 administrative elections proposal – I opposed in 2021, for similar reasons to you, but I've come around since to the idea that it's necessary to deal with the hostility problem, so I've been working on this in the background. If you have any ideas on how to make it better, I'm all ears :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 04:46, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
