March songs
my story today

sharing impressions from vacation on Madeira 20-30 March, pics now at 25 March with ups and downs and two cats -- where does Mozart sit in your thoughts regarding infoboxes? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:22, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Gerda Arendt, that looks like a lovely vacation! I looked at Mozart. I like the links to List of compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Mozart family. I think that is a clever way to accommodate the concern some editors have that infoboxes present incomplete or decontextualized information. It points readers to more detailed information and avoids the need to pick-and-choose what compositions to feature (for example). In some ways, it's almost like it serves as a navigation box for the Mozart topic, pointing out related articles that may be more relevant to readers. Wug·a·po·des 01:16, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
Yes, vacation was great, and more pics to follow. Yes, a clever way. Something like this was added by Brian Boulton to his featured article Percy Grainger, in 2013, and to Beethoven in 2015, as the community consensus, by the arb who had written the infoboxes case, where I had proposed it, - my favourite edit, I felt so forgiven! - I wrote a little history, - admittedly as a polemic response to the (later collapsed) following invitation to the RfC on Classical music. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:40, 1 April 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate that brief history. I know we've talked some about seeing if there's an RfC that could be put together to synthesize some of those discussions. I plan to take a short break from Arb business in late May/early June. If you'll be around then I'd be interested in seeing what we could put together. Wug·a·po·des 00:55, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

A minor suggestion

Regarding your recent evidence, the better diff (with relevant editing summary) regarding my edit would likely be this rather than the later edit summary related to a different edit in a series of three I made.

As for additional external publications, check links in my User:Piotrus/Response for links to additional 2023 newspaper publications by G&K and me. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:36, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

@Piotrus: I tried to follow objective criteria when selecting and linking diffs, so where multiple edits appeared in a row, I diffed them together. When actually citing them in, say, the summary, I agree the more specific diff should be used for clarity. I also appreciate the additional links; I'll look through them as well. Question from Hardword1 (21:52, 4 April 2023)

HI, I WANT TO CREATE a page called listed buildings in Exeter, which contains some information and photos of different categories of listed buildings, Although there is no existing page with this name , but I discovered two pages in wikipedia, one is Listed building in Exeter grade II And another one for grade I* Do you think I shouldn't create my page to prevent it from being deleted. Thanks a lot. --Hardword1 (talk) 21:52, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Hardword1! I'm sorry it took me a few days to reply to you. Are there listed buildings in Exeter that are not Grade I or Grade II*? It looks like those lists are complete, so we do not need a more general list unless there are buildings we are missing. Wug·a·po·des 22:06, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mikhailbot (16:45, 5 April 2023)

Hey I noticed that a page was deleted under incorrect information. How do I go about fixing it? --Mikhailbot (talk) 16:45, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Question from Freddyy0001 (16:36, 14 April 2023)

How can I edit as a learner --Freddyy0001 (talk) 16:36, 14 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi Freddyy0001 and welcome! If you are learning English, then you should visit our sister project: the Simple English Wikipedia. The Simple English Wikipedia is written by and for learners of English. I think you will enjoy editing there too! For this Wikipedia, you can try making edits that do not need a high level of language proficiency. We have jobs like sorting "stubs" which are very short articles. Thanks, and I look forward to your edits! I am also happy to answer any other questions you might have. Wug·a·po·des 00:40, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

Your removal

Hello, in reference to your removal, I pointed out a severe error of omission in your writing. I do not intend to submit evidence in the case, I do not want to face the obvious payback cost of being hounded by the Poles across articles I do care about. 209.171.238.138 (talk) 09:52, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Note

Hi.

Just wanted to thank you for volunteering to close. Closing tends to be a thankless task, and everyone who volunteers to help out in that way deserves a kudos.

I also wanted to let you know that I added the word "granted" to each of the policy pages, per the RfC wording. I wrote it that way in the RfC so to avoid the confusion that someone might accidentally think that automatically added user-rights - like the ability to read the Wiki - are removed.

I hope the day finds you well : ) - jc37 22:27, 18 May 2023 (UTC)

@Jc37: Well thank you (and Worm That Turned) for putting together a good RfC! It was probably one of the easier closes despite the size. To your changes on the policy pages, I saw them, and I think Tamzin has also been doing some copy editing. I just wanted to pop the relevant policies onto everyone's watchlists, so I'm happy to see others working on the precise wordings. Wug·a·po·des 18:12, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

May songs
my story today

Thank you for arb work completed in May. - I had a good story on coronation day: the Te Deum we sang that day. And the following day we sang it for the composer ;)

I nominated Soňa Červená for GA just to give her a bit more exposure, and I took some pics of bright scenery - click on songs. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:10, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi Gerda Arendt, an interesting story! It reminds me of my field work a few years ago. I was going around town recording sociolinguistic interviews for data and got to have an interesting chat with a music store owner who apparently was part of a line of accordion salesmen. Concertinas are such interesting instruments! Meanwhile, yes there's been a lot of arb work, and I'm glad to be taking a bit of a break. The Červená article is interesting to me because of her tenure at the San Francisco Opera. This June, the SF Opera is doing Madame Butterfly, and it's something I've been looking forward to on the other side of all the arb work. It's been in the spotlight in the last decade alongside Otello as an example of how racism (historical and contemporary) is perpetuated in Opera. For context, Japantown, San Francisco is one of the oldest ethnic enclaves in the US, and Chinatown, San Francisco is the oldest Chinese enclave in North America, and one of the largest outside Asia. The San Francisco Opera choosing to do Madame Butterfly is provocative, to say the least! From the promotional materials it seems like the creative team is working really hard to stage a production in conversation with these critiques, and reimagining what the show could mean to contemporary audiences. I love that kind of production, where the same source material is used but all the other production elements are used in less traditional ways. I like when creative teams get to play around with what a source could mean rather than get stuck in what it has meant. So I'm fascinated and excited to see what they do. You might see me poking around at the article once the reviews start to come in. Wug·a·po·des 23:54, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
that's interesting because the Oper Frankfurt (the mezzo's European base) also staged a Butterfly recently (interviews mostly in English), and the tenor was one of these tourists who buy sex as an extra part of vacation (house and woman). I wrote the articles of the heroine and the director then, and the tenor (who had been sick on premiere day, so reviews are not about him) is still on my to-do list. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:18, 21 May 2023 (UTC)
my story today is that 300 years ago, Bach became Thomaskantor, with BWV 75, writing music history. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:19, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.
