In regards to your fix of Washington State to Washington State University. Washington State is not a disambiguation page, it is a redirect. Washington State is what was intended the Alumni Associations of Alpha Phi Omega of the Philippines in the United States (and elsewhere outside the Philippines) are geographical and that one does cover Washington State.Naraht (talk) 13:30, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Whoops. Washington state is a redirect page to Washington, Washington State (with a capital S) is the redirect page. I think the most appropriate change is to change it from Washington State to Washington state (small s). In this case, I think linking to the redirect is most appropriate for the audience.Naraht (talk) 16:09, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Disambiguation of 'diver'

Just a quick heads-up that disambiguation of diver is not really suitable for an automated task. The article Diving describes the sport of high-board diving, etc. – so is not a good destination for uses of the word 'diver' in scuba or similar articles. Although the mental images of diver down flags around a springboard, and a commercial diver operating hyperbaric welding equipment while performing a triple-backward somersault raised a chuckle. Cyprus edit "Britain"

Hi

You edited the page from "Britain" to "United Kingdom". These are different geographical entities, with the United Kindom including Northern Ireland and other outlying islands such as Scotlands and Britain not including it as it is merely the one land mass, and so it has changed the context of the information as the figures we have from the Cyprus gov seem to state Britain and not UK

Can you please elaborate on why that disambiguation link change was made so that I can re-edit it and not fall foul of the problem again

I think perhaps it should have been changed to Great Britain|Britain but not sure until you can help me understand what the problem was. Technically I cant see how this can be correct as Great Britain does not include islands such as the outer hebrides etc and so the Cyprus gov figures must be incorrect as I am sure someone from outer hebrides would put GB or UK but we have no way of knowing exactly what they used in their info compared to their choice "Britain" which would have excluded any OuterH residents

Abuse template

i have added my case for keeping, but it occurs to me that you were probably not aware that the old abuse template was a different type of beast to the new one - a prominent non-collapsible side template, much more prominent than the current collapsible footer abuse template. --Penbat (talk) 16:27, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Linking

Can you be a little more careful repairing dab page links: you just linked House Sparrow to Balochistan (Afghanistan), wheras most links, including this one, to Baluchistan refer to Balochistan (region). —innotata(TalkContribs) 16:11, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I'll try fixing Baluchistan links. —innotata (TalkContribs) 15:56, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

The Baluchistan mis-links? I've looked through the various what links here pages, and I've found dozens of mislinked pages, though it is a bit hard, with all the navboxes each page links to. —innotata (TalkContribs) 00:44, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

I can't help with this. The best thing to do is just to fix links for ones for which it is hard to tell which page is correct, the Balochistan pages for example. —innotata (TalkContribs) 01:06, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Single Login

Hey. You are the admin that I know, so I am coming to you. I was futzing around with my preferences today, and found something called "single login" or maybe "unified login". It is a very good idea. I followed the steps to unify my accounts on the EN, NL, Wikibooks and Commons, and I think it worked (but I'm not sure). I went to see if there was a username "Zweifel" on the German wikipedia, and indeed there wasn't. I tried to register it, but it said there was already a user "Z.weifel", and that the names were too similar. Is there any way to get that username on the German Wikipedia? And could you check to see if my accounts are unified? I'm sorry if I am just giving you work to do, and by all means just point me in the right direction to do it myself if you wish. Abuse relisting

I am extremely shocked that User:Plastikspork has relisted ‎ Abuse. It has been a major nightmare for me having to waste my time on this - now the ordeal goes on for another week. I dont think User:Plastikspork looked at this properly, all those who wanted deletion have now withdrawn or moved to a neutral stance (User:Apoc2400 for example. There isnt any compromise to be reached as the view is now unanimously a Keep. There has been far too much discussion already. I am likely to have a heart attack at this rate.--Penbat (talk) 18:42, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

Abuse TFD looks like a complete mess

see User_talk:Plastikspork#Please_tell_where_i_have_voted_twice_in_the_new_discussion_.3F

It looks like administrators just count bits of emboldened text and ignore the fact that opinions may change as the result of discussion. This is the whole point of discussions. 3 of the editors in the 1st TFD effectively changed from delete to neutral butUser:Plastikspork looks to have ignored that and just gone by their initial postions. If he had picked up their later views there would have been no justification for relisting the TFD and wasting everybodies time all over again. --Penbat (talk) 17:36, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

The whole thing is a nightmare and stressing me out incredibly. Is there anything you can do ?--Penbat (talk) 17:42, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
It is the straw that breaks the camels back for me and I will exit Wikipedia for good if I lose this TFD. I have done tons of work on Wikipedia and it is just futile carrying on if i have my work ripped apart largely by people who dont understand the subject or dont follow the correct procedure. The work was hard enough as it was.--Penbat (talk) 17:58, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
I have explained about 5 times that as far as i am concerned, deleting the Abuse template completely undermines the abuse article that i have spent ages working on. Also it sounds like if i spent the next 7 days successfully changing the mind of those opposed in the new TFD (like i did with the 1st TFD) it will be ignored anyway. The whole thing is completely futile and pointless.--Penbat (talk) 18:27, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

My guess is that you meant to write "That doesn't mean I no longer want the article template deleted.", so I thought I'd leave a note. –Black Falcon (talk) 21:39, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Battle of Spion Kop

Hi. What was this edit about? Has WikiCleaner got a bug? You undid the edit, but then re-did it again with the edit summary "(I'm hot. ;-) Yikes". I have changed it to British. Department of "not many people know that": among those present at the battle was the young Mahatma Gandhi, serving as a stretcher-bearer. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 10:02, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

You did a whole string of British from 19:04 to 19:09 last night - it looks as though you moved on from doing American without, as it were, changing gear. In the interests of Anglo-American relations I have fixed the ones in that block that others hadn't already caught, but perhaps you should do some spot checks back over your other WikiCleans in case there are any more. Disambiguation Is Pretty Cool, I Must Say...

Hello, Woohookitty! I've just started getting into this project, and I wish I had known about it sooner! Not only is fixing the links (and correctly determining which link to provide) rewarding, but each disambiguation job is like a small tour of WP articles. From two sentence stubs to quality articles with a gazillion references - this takes you everywhere. I'm a Mac user, so I can't get AWB (grrrr...), but I find it interesting to do it manually. Until I get back to work in a few weeks, I'll be working away on these (I've already done James Moody, Geffen, Steamer, Prodigy, Chrome, Corn, Charm, and Bacchus). I'd say I'm hooked. Just wanted to let you know you've got a dedicated new project member! Cheers :> Doc9871 (talk) 02:04, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Proliferation

The link from Jane's Intelligence Review to proliferation gave readers who followed it a pretty good idea of what "weapons proliferation" means. Therefore, the link seemed useful to me even if it pointed to a dab page. Are you positive thatremoving the link is an improvement?Rl (talk) 09:06, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

In general, I agree with you (and I think you are doing important work). I am just wary of words like "never" and "always". I think a link to a dab page is justified if it is useful and there is no better alternative. In this case, the Wiktionary article is more generic and less helpful than the dab page. Anyway, I just wanted to understand your reasoning and make sure I hadn't overlooked something important or missed a memo or something. Thanks for your explanations. Harness disambig

Hi WHK, just wanted to let you know about the range of possible disambiguation fixes for the horse harness articles. We lump a lot of different things under the general term "harness" using it as a noun, a verb and an adjective! (maybe even an adverb! LOL! But so you know, we have horse harness about the equipment, driving (horse) which is about the general range of activities (and a good catch-all if you don't know where else to link), harness racing for the racing sport, but then articles on some of the other specific harness events, notably the International-level combined driving, fine harness, pleasure driving, roadster (horse) and of course dozens of links to various horse-drawn vehicles. Hope this helps! If you run into a situation that has you scratching your head wondering what to link to, feel free to give me a shout! Montanabw(talk) 16:12, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I noticed that on June 5, 2009, you disambiguated a number of articles linking to Québécois. In so doing, you overwhelmingly favoured the interpretation French-speaking Quebecer. As you know, the word Québécois can have that meaning, but it can also have the meaning "from Quebec".

The fact is, in most cases, it would have been impossible to tell, strictly speaking, whether what was meant was "Quebec", as in "Quebec artist", or instead "French-speaking Quebec artist", which is the interpretation you generally chose. The choice of French-speaking Quebecer imparts an ethnic/cultural meaning which is not necessarily intended.

For example, it might in many cases be preferable to identify an artist in terms of his geographical origin ("Quebec artist" or "American artist") rather than his language (or ethnicity) and geographical origin ("French-speaking Quebec artist", "French-Canadian artist", "English-Canadian artist" or "Italian-American artist"). In fact, it is uncommon for English-Canadian figures to be identified this way on Wikipedia (they are usually simply termed "Canadian"), and it is not equitable for French-Canadian ones to have their ethnicity consistently specified rather than simply their geographical origin.

I would therefore suggest that in cases of doubt (where there is no clear reason to invoke language or ethnicity), it might have been advisable to make the assumption that ethnicity was not intended, and to link to Quebec. It might even have been preferable to replace Québécois with Quebec in such cases.

For example, a Google Books search turns up 104 results for "Québécois artist" and 715 for "Quebec artist." Even for "singer" and "author", which might have been presumed to be intimately related to language, "Quebec" is respectively four and ten times likelier than "Québécois" on Google Books. I would suggest that the frequent use of "Québécois" by Wikipedia editors may not be the best practice, as it can carry unwarranted ethnic overtones.

Personally, I do not express a preference between "Canadian" and "Quebec" in these cases. But I do feel that ethnicity should not be mentioned when it is not specifically relevant. In most of the cases you addressed, a non-ethnic interpretation of Québécois was available. 82.124.231.13 (talk) 04:42, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Rights of way (transportation)

I noticed that you'd made a number of changes to links using Wikicleaner which have had the effect of re-directing various links formerly directed at 'public footpath' (or similar) to 'Right-of-way (transportation)' which is a disambiguation page. This has not proved useful. I have changed three to 'Rights of way in England and Wales' which is more appropriate to the article.

Someone changed the season 6 table based on your compromise just changing the colors to the shades of blue and then used that article as justification for changing the season 9's Bottom 3's to Bottom 2's. Trade unions in Tanzania

Hi, I'd just like to make you aware that your recent edit of the Trade unions in Tanzania article was wrong. The article was not referring to the American Department of Labor but the Tanzanian. Fictional history of Spider-Man

Following three attempts at having this page deleted, a number of editors collaborated on bringing this multiply-tagged article up to to policy and guideline standards of Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction). Comments were solicited at Talk:Fictional history of Spider-Man#Rewrite since May 26, and a final draft, created over a month of editorial input, was completed and put up for final comment at Talk:Fictional history of Spider-Man#Rewrite and replacement on June 25. On June 30, this consensus version, which confirms to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction), will replace the current page Fictional history of Spider-Man. As you have contributed to that page, we wanted to alert you to the opportunity for final comments. Thanks, --Tenebrae (talk) 17:38, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Need references:

He just removed my notes from his talk page. He has no desire to work with me and by the WP norms. Maybe you can get through to him.

> Best O Fortuna (talk) 18:05, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Look at his English:

"In 1946, Ted Lyons, former Chicago White Sox teammates with Moe Berg (1926-1930), was the new manager of the White Sox, offered Berg a coaching position. Berg declined. Boston Red Sox owner Thomas Yawkey, who was much closer to Moe Berg when Berg played for Boston Red Sox, offered same as Lyons' offer, but Berg still turned them down. Berg did not apply for a teaching position, join a law firm." from Moe Berg.

Hi there. I've noticed you linked the parameter value "Public" in the "fundingtype" field with state school in a number of articles that use the Infobox education in Canada template, for example Burford District Elementary School. The change is not necessary, but points to another change that could be made to resolve the redirect issue you've identified. The Infobox template automatically generates a link to Public school (government funded) when the parameter "Public" is given. If that article is now redirected to state school, a request to change the template to generate the new direct link should be made. Would be a lot simpler than having to clean up articles, and a lot easier on WP resources too. :-) Does that make sense? Would be happy to help make and/or second such a request on the Template talk:Infobox education in Canada page. --papageno (talk) 14:21, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I went ahead and made the change to the template code directly, tested it, and it seems to be working. Don't suppose you have an easy way of rolling back the changes you made to various articles so that the parameter is back to the straight value "Public" without any wikilinking? --papageno (talk) 15:27, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

But when you are done fixing an ambiguous term, could you please take the time to remove the entry from the To do list, and add it to the bottom of the Done list? Despite what the vendors choose to call it [different website vendors call is easy listening, pop, classical]; it is not a classical album. All 14 tracks that I downloaded from Amazon have the genre Pop in them which I do not feel is correct but may be more accurate than classical.
