Requested move for Kurama

Dear WhisperToMe/Archive5, seems you edit YuYu Hakusho-related pages from time to time. I've started a survey on Talk:Kurama (YuYu Hakusho)#Requested move and you're more than welcome to place your thoughts there, if you'd like. Thank you. Lord Sesshomaru 20:53, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should move Hiei (YuYu Hakusho) back to Jaganshi Hiei. Reason being: both standard names for Kurama and Hiei are on the official website, see it for reference. Lord Sesshomaru 22:41, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While I understand that this is a discussion, there is no need for you to double post on the talk pages of both myself and the article in question. Also, there is no need to rip me apart over simply stating my opinion. Thank you. Jezebel Parks 23:40, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, I think you went too far WhisperToMe/Archive5. Your reasons for opposing make sense but saying the same things on every single member's talk page seem like you're trying to stack votes for your side or something. Lord Sesshomaru 03:02, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
On a rather different note, this image you uploaded some time ago is unlicensed. If it's claim is fair use, there should be a {{Non-free logo}} on it, though now I don't know if a fair use rationale should be included, since you made clear, that they're not. Lord Sesshomaru 04:23, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Mitsunari Yanagisawa.jpg and Image:Yuu Kaito.jpg are works of art? They look like fair use pictures to me. Thoughts? Lord Sesshomaru 04:54, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking care of those images. Hey, what's that device police, FBI, etc., use to trace calls? I don't think it's a trap and trace device, is it? Lord Sesshomaru 05:49, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm not sure if it's telephone tapping or voice logging? I'm editing the Zodiac Killer page now but I can't decide which would be more appropiately linked in a sentence like: "Police [[???|traced the call]] to a man..." Thoughts? Lord Sesshomaru
Got it, thanks! {^_^} Lord Sesshomaru 06:09, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Ranmavolume1.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Ranmavolume1.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ElinorD (talk) 16:49, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lind L. Tailor

Yeah, that works better. Thanks. Nique talk 02:40, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

But that doesn't change that the WP:MOS-JA as well as Hepburn romanization only ever show the apostrophe, as far as I can see, after a syllabic N, and there is nothing stating that there's an apostrophe after a double-e "ei" to distinguish between "ei-i" and "e-ii" anywhere that I can find.
Aside from this, I may be a novice at Japanese, but the Japanese Dictionary Server says that the kanji in question, 鋭, becomes エイ, not エエ. Thus, I don't see why there should be an apostrophe in the romaji in the article if it's ei not ee/ei.
Please do not change it again until we can come to an agreement. If you can show me some source regarding the apostrophe's placement in revised Hepburn, or how エイ can be considered a double e when the morae are supposed to be separate, I'll be glad to accede, but as yet, I can't find anything. Mercedes and formatting

Mercedes had been changing the formatting and I had been telling her to STOP. If she does not stop, she should be blocked for vandalism (She never explained her changes on a talk page and made no attempt to discuss her edits). WhisperToMe 05:27, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I understand your frustration, but I doubt it's vandalism. I assume that it's a misguided effort at "better" formatting that appeals to User:Mercedes1, but that grates at you and me like fingernails dragged across a chalkboard. I tried to explain in a comment left on the talk page and it looks like the few edits since then have avoided format changes. What seems so obvious to us doesn't always seem so clear to a newbie, and what we see as fundamental Wikipedia standards can seem to be rather arbitrary to a new editor, as appears to be the case. Alansohn 05:33, 7 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I thought you would like to know that Mercedes is at it again. This time she is creating new articles about the intermediate schools in Klein ISD that were up for AfD and were deleted after discussion. These new articles also feature the non-standard formatting. Could you or someone else do something about this, I don't quite know what to do.-MBK004 15:50, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Southwest Houston article

Hey, I added your SW Houston request to Wikipedia:WikiProject Houston collaboration. This should be an interesting article, especially if the history and turn of events over the past 25 years or so is included. I lived in an apartment in Fondren Southwest right after I got out of college. It was very nice back then...there was a 24 hour Weingarten's, a Target, all types of stores and a First City Bank at the intersection of W. Bellfort and Fondren. Fair use rationale for Image:HirotoHonda1.PNG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:HirotoHonda1.PNG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Re: Harry's Legend

See my response to your commentary in the discussion page for the AfD. Aside from that, also note that you're coming off as a wikilawyer. Kindly note the requirements for notability, verifiability, and reliable sources. Re: Mitsuko Souma

Just to clarify, the kanji for Mitsuko Souma's last name in kanji is read as

相 = Sō

馬 = Uma, ma

So, Mitsuko Souma's last name is read as this: 相馬 or Sōma.

I accidentally changed Souma's last name and for that I apologize. :) Thank you for your comments. Greg Jones II 21:02, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I didn't realize 相馬 was transliterated as Sōma, not Souma. And for the name change, once again, please accept my apologies. Thanks again for your comments to me. It is very much appreciated. Greg Jones II 21:09, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OLA Fire name

The guys over at WikiProject Disasters made up that rule, then told me that an article I had written needed to have the year in front of it. In response, I thank you. I think I wanted some help on that issue in the MOS. Greg Jones II 00:55, 17 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am Whispering to You about your use of the apostrophe in Eiichi. Most of I am going to whisper is based only on my speculation as a native Japanese. But I think it is an attested fact that the time-honoured traditional orthography of Japanese language in the indigenous phonetic script or Kana is devoid of long vowels and that the language is said to be isochronic. And even if the point of long vowels is left out, still we must admit the so-called Hepburn system is not conceived as a transliteration system of Kana syllabary. Now my speculation. In most European languages, syllable boundary is a consonant. And the sequences of vowels which abound in the Japanese language are cumbersome. Hence introduction of the macron. But at the time when the Hepburn system was conceived, the macron was difficult to print on the typewriter, so the accent circonflex was used instead. And in case of `i', geminated letter or "ii" was used because an accent mark presupposed a dotless 'i'. So I think your use of the apostrophe is quite natural. Mantaro and Harabote

Fair enough... except I wasn't the one who moved the article this time... as for Kinnikuman Generations, I titled the article that because I felt it was a more fitting descriptive title, considering the article focuses on the game series as a whole instead of just the one game. Re: Regarding kanji of actors

If you disagree with my removal of the kanji, you can add them back. However, it's still inappropriate for the kanji to be on the List of Characters page for roles they played. That's why I removed them. As for the nihongo template, names don't HAVE to be templated, no, but they should, because the template gives helpful links and an organizational structure without having to put in extra wikiformat, i.e. italics. Ah, I just noticed how VIZ does it. I really only based my assumption off of the "The Story So Far..." page at the beginning of volume 2, where they list Gintoki and Shinpachi's names in given/family name order (although I think they show Katsura's name in family/given name...), although they list it as 'Sakata "Gin" Gintoki' on the back cover, and I'm assuming other places as well? If so, then a silly mistake on my part. Disaster KirbyTalk 02:04, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Moi, je dit non. En ce cas-ci, j'ai le pressentiment d'un « Laocoon » prudent. Pourquoi? Car c'est WhisperToMe qui vient d'offre un espèce de cadeau grec. Non avec inquiétude. --Ooperhoofd 14 septembre 2007 à 02:46 (CEST)"

Ooper's use of language is idiosyncratic, to say the least! Not entirely sure what he means by this, but here's a translation:

"I say no. In this case, I have the hunch of a wary Laocoön. Why? Becasue WhisperToMe comes bearing Greek gifts. A worried no." Seann 05:13, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I believe you were closer to his meaning with your original comment. Ooper seems to be comparing this to a Trojan Horse situation ("WtM comes bearing Greek gifts"); i.e. if we (the French-language Wikipedia) accept this, what will be next?
His main objection seems to be not with your proposal, but the fact that an English-language Wikipedian is strongly pushing for a French-language change. Xenophobic? I don't think so... just a bit protectionist, maybe ;-) (I grew up in Paris and can well testify to the French touchiness over what they perceive as an English-language push for world dominance!!) Regarding the Sendelbach *section*, I have edited a portion of the paragraph, because the entry about teachers in Japan, does not fit in the long-history of a local school district. The citation is sufficient.

What may be appropriate (I am not certain that a parent-student-administration controversy belongs here but I digress), if there needs to be a long rendition of a blurp in history, is to create an actual link to a section about Sendelbach. How the *section* was originally worded would lead into a discussion of the punishment and that would not be appropriate for Wikipedia (as you know). Respectfully. Ch911 —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 06:11, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a comment to the WP Schools talk page. Now that the links work it is much easier to understand the issues involved. I think the problem was that both versions were badly worded. It often surprises me how different American English and British English can be! Dahliarose 15:56, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Again, when you read the article and the history section from the start to end, the inclusion sounds rather "odd" for an encyclopedia. I think the discussion Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Schools#Katy_ISD_and_the_mentioning_of_a_punishment_case_that_garners_international_attention did not indicate your preference was preferred. Actually it demonstrated it probably should not be included at all, as a rather trival event, that is more political than factual. Respectfully, the reason I am rather concerned is that this site is used as a conclusive point of research on the district history (one of which I have spent a considerable amount of time over many months, compiling from different sources and newspapers). Would you consider a compromise? If you want this event in the history portion, would you consider a link to another wikipedia article on the subject or create a seperate section for "Controversies" or maybe the district in national media...??? Thanks again for your effort. talk —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 01:49, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am taking your response, as that you will *not* agree to a compromise? talk —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 14:19, 28 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article is starting to grow on me. Another positive is that if anyone is ever reading about the history of Katy, and has a question about Japan, there is a quick link provided. Thanks Again. Ch911

Adding Hakodate airport to Hakodate

Hi there. Was wondering if you thought it might be more appropriate to put the information about Hakodate airport in the see also section? Sorry I reverted before because I thought it was already included in the article. My thinking is that the fact is important but not so important that it be in the second paragraph. Thank you for uploading Image:CDNLOGO.gif. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI 22:03, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hawaiian Vacations

I've reverted your change removing Anchorage from the list of destinations served by Hawaiian Airlines. As noted, this is a charter service on behalf of Hawaiian Vacations. This was a long-standing seasonal service, which will end as Hawaiian Vacations has been purchased by Alaska Airlines and customers will instead travel on Alaska's upcoming ANC-HNL flights rather than on Hawaiian. Samuel Adams

Hi there. I undid your edit here at Samuel Adams. Essentially, it's trivia, and I don't really see how it's pertinent to the subject. Can you delete these? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 20:18, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
We have a Goku and Bebi redirect, no one's going to type those extra long names if these exist & are much more common. Capsule Corporation and Dragon Ball Canon are just as ridiculous. What do you think? Lord Sesshomaru (talkedits) 22:33, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:AmericanAirlines1420SeatInjuryMap.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 20:32, 18 October 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. national languages of India

Dear whispertome,

you have told me that telugu is not a national language of India but Hindi and English are.
  To state the facts

1) Hindi and English are only the official languages to be used by the union govt. 2) India does not explicitly state anything about its national languages. Its commonly assumed that all languages listed in the schedule eight of indian constitution are national languages of India. 3) An official langauge need not be a national language but the converse is generally true.

5) All the languages listed in eight schedule of India are official languages of India 6) Union govt is not same as India 7) languages used by Union govt for administration purposes need not be the only national languages of India 8) If a state uses telugu for official purposes then it also becomes official language of the country. Because a country is combination of union and state govts. 9) Even hindi is used as state languages in some states. so it is also a regional language if telugu is. +++++++++++++++++++==

Everything that I said, you said. "1) Hindi and English are only the official languages to be used by the union govt." <-- That is what I meant by national

Your definition of national languages is NOT CORRECT. India does not have any national languages explicitly stated. A country is not defined by what union govt uses for administration purposes. A country is the combination of its people , union govt and state govts. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bsreddys (talkcontribs) 22:46, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

your defintion of national language

Everything that I said, you said. "1) Hindi and English are only the official languages to be used by the union govt." <-- That is what I meant by national +++++++= your definition of national language is not correct. for your kind information "English" is not even included in the eight schedule of the constitution. And by your definition even english becomes national language of India.

Official langauges are not same as national languages. official languages of the states(govt administration) also become official languages of the country as a whole. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bsreddys (talkcontribs) 22:54, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

language status

At this rate you will not convince us of your point of view. I feel that you do not understand our reasons for limiting it to the two national languages (And, no, Hindi has a HIGHER status that Telugu) - Please stop editing, or else your account may be blocked. WhisperToMe 02:08, 28 October 2007 (UTC) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++=

India is a multicultural and multi lingual country. It aint no new found land :) I dont believe that one official language has higher status than other official language in India.

your comment--> 2. When one says official languages of country X, it is implied that they are the officially-recognized languages of the federal/national government and not of local governments.

++++++++ then why not make it explicit ? why leave room for guesses ?? and it is all the more important for a country like India. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bsreddys (talkcontribs) 07:17, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ethiopian Crash

Hello. I see that you are doing a lot of work on the Ethiopian Plane crash flight 961 and I have just noticed that you have put the nationalities of the deceased before any of the sub headings. Instead of me going in there and butting in, I just think that putting the nationalities into a sub heading or even creating a new one would be great. And it doesn't have to be a list with blue links, just the countries with commas should be fine.

Congratulations on the hard work again and hopefully it is a featured article one day! Aflumpire 09:02, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jorge Chavez Airport

Yes, excuse me about that. Anyway, I think the Incidents and Accidents section is unnecessary. The shrimp incident is honestly not relevant and a section for accidents involving the airport would be too long. There have been plenty of accidents such as the shrimp one involving a plane that had stopped in the airport and then something happened. I think that such section is innecessary and does not fit in the article appropriately. 190.40.101.223 19:41, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not about whether the creators mind or not. It's about the Foundation's policy to be as free as possible. The Pokémon Wikiproject (WT:PCP) recently merged all 493 species articles into 25 large lists (20 Pokémon each), and Durin subsequently removed the images because they violated WP:NFCC#3a, even though it was only one image per species.
Anyway, you and I are not going to come to an agreement by ourselves, so I'm going to post on WP:VPP to query about the interpretation of WP:NFCC.

You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:17, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hi

Hello. I'm new to wikipedia. Can you help me know what to do in wikpedia? Thank you!!! --Trinityblood 15:07, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An article that you have been involved in editing, Naruto geography, has been listed for deletion. If you are interested in the deletion discussion, please participate by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Naruto geography (2nd nomination).

Another editor started it 2 November and I just noticed that the contributors still needed to be notified. --A. B. (talk) 19:23, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:MihayaOzakiShadowStar.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:MihayaOzakiShadowStar.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Your note

Hi Whisper, I looked at that article, and it seems fairly decent to me. I personally have a different citation style (footnote after punctuation), and it could stand some basic copy-edit. But overall it looks much better than many similar articles. I don't have a source for that diagram, though I could look around. Cheers, Crum375 21:22, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Still not quite understanding it. Hasn't Tea Gardner always been Anzu in Japan? Does her name change in the second season or something? hbdragon88 22:54, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So in this case English name first, Japanese in parentehses?
Finding myself surprised how closely YGO:TAS follows the plot, except for of course their own little jokes. hbdragon88 23:19, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks. Will make sure to abide by this when editing YGO articles in the future. hbdragon88 05:16, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've prodded this redirection as nonsensical, because the name occurs no-where in the redirected page. Perhaps you mis-typed? Michaelbusch 05:39, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation. It is somewhat confusing at first glance, though. Michaelbusch 05:44, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I asked on Wikipedia:WikiProject Aviation about three people who are relatives of notable people (who do not have Wikipedia articles yet) who happened to die in notable plane crashes. Where should their names redirect to? Should Elma Thwaites redirect to her son's name or to the plane crash? Should Katie Lychner and Pam Lychner redirect to her mother's name or to the plane crash article? WhisperToMe 05:48, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd link them to the crash pages, as long as they aren't mentioned in other articles. Michaelbusch 05:50, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm considering proposing a new Wikiproject for the University of Houston. I'm looking to see if other Wikipedians would be interested in being involved in such a project. Are you? Thanks for your response! Brianreading 06:31, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds great! I'll let you know about the progress of the Wikiproject as other members let me know if it is a good idea or not! Thanks! Brianreading 06:34, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:NaozumiSudoShadowStar.JPG)

Thanks for uploading Image:NaozumiSudoShadowStar.JPG. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed.

Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:20, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

'ello

Hey, I wanted to drop by and give you a little something for your constant vigilance of Hightower High School. I run across quite a few school articles when doing rc patrol or spellchecking (yay lupin's tool!), and I try to add them to my watchlist with the hope of getting around to fixing them up someday. Whenever I take a look at my watchlist, it seems you're always working to prevent the degradation of that article, so I thought, what the heck? people need encouragement!

Cheers, and happy editing! Xiong Chiamiov :: contact :: 06:10, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, btw, if you're interested, I asked sometime ago about some examples of good articles on schools. I shoulda figgured, they pointed me to the good articles page, as well as those that have made it on to be featured articles. I haven't looked at your contribs to see what all you've been doing, but I figured that it's *possible* that you might find this useful. Memorial High School

With due respect, I think the section that was set up regarding private schools who have students that have ended up at Memorial is vague (simply because many public schools have students that once went to private school), and wrongly leaves the impression that these schools are directing students to MHS. --76.99.29.158 02:25, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just because something may be true, does not mean it is particularly relevant, especially when the citation shows that only one student from ROB ended up at Memorial.--76.99.29.158 03:59, 16 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

My reference for the statement that Jamie Bishop was shot in the chest is this letter. Since it is apparently not well documented exactly where he was shot, and it would be a little macabre to add a discussion of the question, I'm just deleting the statement of where he was shot; it's really off-topic anyway. References to Advanced Fee Fraud (419)

Please note the following: - The link: http://www.nextwebsecurity.com/419news.asp referring to set up of the Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) does not work. There is an official site which should be used: http://www.efccnigeria.org/ - The links indicating that this activity is centred in Lagos are misleading and should not be considered as primary sources because: a. the articles are written by media that are neither able, nor responsible for properly assessing the prevalence in Lagos vis-à-vis other Nigerian cities. Direct links from government or NGO sites would be more accurate sources.

However, I restate that this information should be restricted to the “Crime in Nigeria” page. Your rationale that because "it happens" does not justify it's inclusion on the city or country page, when there is clearly a separate article dedicated for this information. Placing it under "Economy" implies that this is a significant part of economic activity, which it is not.

For example: black people in America are subject to systemic institutionalised racism as evidenced by stiffer prison sentences than white defendants committing the same crime. There are numerous online and paper articles, court reports, and academic studies supporting this information, does that justify the inclusion of this information on a US city or country page?

The same could be said about credit card fraud in the US, kidnapping in Mexico or the drugs trade in Thailand.

I also object to the tone of your message, are you trying to intimidate me by “warning” me not to do the very thing Wikipedia was created for? Namely contribute to an environment where people proximate to information are allowed and encouraged to enhance the knowledge of people less proximate.

Your responsibility as an administrator is to ensure impartiality and the accurateness of articles, not to strong arm dissenting views or push one particular view point above others. Remember encyclopaedic material must be verifiable. As an online encyclopaedia, all articles should share common structural themes, exceptions should be minimised. I believe that this is a glaring exception which you seem particularly intent on maintaining. Why is that?Ajisekanla (talk) 12:19, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

" I have read many, many, MANY articles which state that 419 is a huge part of the Nigerian economy. I found the Slate article, and I am sure I can find more articles." Magazine articles which rely on sources not proximate to the subject matter cannot be held to be of the same value as primary sources. An abundance of "sources" does not change a crime issue to an economic one. The same rationale applies to the illegal drug industry in the US and kidnapping in Mexico – both of which also have abundant sources substantiating their impact on those respective economies.

More specifically regarding the Slate article - Insa Nolte is not an economist nor has she published research on this subject (Advance fee fraud) or on the economy of Nigeria –http://www.cwas.bham.ac.uk/staff/nolte.htm. Her comments are more a reflection of her opinion rather than the fruit of detailed research and should not be considered as more than that. An article by the World Bank, the IFC, the Nigerian Ministry of Finance, the Financial Times or the Economist intelligence group would be more relevant as a source here.

I restate that in keeping with the majority of Wikipedia articles, this information is not suitable for a country or city page despite the preponderance of cases or degree of global impact. For more information on the Economy of Nigeria check out - http://www.economist.com/countries/Nigeria/ You'll find that alot of the information under Nigeria's economy section (like many other sections) is not correct or substantiated by primary sources. Ajisekanla (talk) 13:25, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You are repeating the same mistake, by continuing to identify research that at best provides limited insight into the economy of Nigeria and cannot be considered authoritative.

"I will e-mail her and ask her which book the statement from the Wired magazine article originated from. WhisperToMe (talk) 16:32, 22 November 2007 (UTC)" Good luck with that. I suspect you find that her research publications (not books) have centred on socio-cultural issues and not the economy (there is a big difference).

"Also, per WP:RS, it is okay to cite the view of a person IF he or she has credentials WhisperToMe (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2007 (UTC)" - Actually you have to do better than that. The credentials must be relevant to the subject matter and must be substantiated. A PhD in Africa Studies does not make her an authority on the Nigerian Economy

"As the head of a history department at a British university, she seems like a good enough source for insight WhisperToMe (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2007 (UTC)" - This assertion further weakens your reasoning. She is not the head of a "history department". The Centre of West African Studies of the University of Birmingham is a faculty that covers education on a broad array of mainly social science information about West Africa. Furthermore she is not even a senior member of the academic staff - she's a junior lecturer http://www.cwas.bham.ac.uk/staff/.

"all I have to do is show that she made the statements (i.e. attribute statements to her). WhisperToMe (talk) 16:34, 22 November 2007 (UTC)" - Actually you have to do better than that, your source must be qualified and impartial in order.

I am amazed that you have continued to insert these suspect entries into the Nigeria country page and you have posted my response to your initial "warning" message to me on the Lagos State page. How is this enhancing the quality of Wikipedia's scholarship? I have corrected these entries. Ajisekanla (talk) 13:18, 23 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Continued reinsertion of questionable material

Whisp, You said “Kindly do not revert agreed upon edits without extensive discussion and consensus. Because the mentioning of 419 is the status quo, the status quo WILL stay in the Nigeria article unless there is a consensus to revert.” You have actually been violating this statement. This issue is not resolved, and the general consensus across Wikipedia is that crime entries (such as these) do not belong on country and city pages, especially when dedicated pages for them exist. As such you should stop reinserting your original research. Because your opinion has been relatively unchallenged for a long time does not mean that it has suddenly become the consensus. Instead of trying to test the popularity of this opinion (which I suspect you will find lower than you think), I suggest that you find research to back up these claims and place that information in the most appropriate article, thus enriching Wikipedia’s scholarship.

“By the way, I noticed that you were shocked by the allegations of the Nigerian government being corrupt…” I did not say that. I said that I am amazed that you would continue to make changes to an already suspicious contribution. Neither Nigeria or the Nigerian government are corrupt, though they do have “corrupt” persons. I object to your rather broad and sweeping generalisations, which are easily disprovable and (as you are no doubt discovering) difficult to defend.

For example you stated that “Many people believe that the Nigerian government(s) is/are corrupt to some degree” and quoted a BBC Article that amazingly has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with corruption. It simply details the logistical difficulty of getting information across a very large country. This again confirms that you have an opinion that you are trying to support, which even if you could prove does not show how “Corruption” = “support for Advance Fee Fraud.” At least you have modified your argument to recognise that it is not defensible as an absolute (i.e. corrupt to some degree rather than completely corrupt). However, it still does not change the fact that this is original research.

Your failure to understand the fundamental weakness in your argument highlights a key difference between us. Unlike you, I live in Nigeria and have an excellent understanding of the country compared to you. I also have a much better understanding of economics and what constitutes an economy. If you still believe that this is information that needs to be included on country, state and city pages, I suggest you try adding information on crime that affects the Economy of Houston such as Police brutality, Drug Abuse or Illegal Immigration to the Houston Texas, city page. If you find that these entries are appropriate (being that they are true, and do happen in Houston and do affect the economy) and can get other editors to agree with you. I will eat my hat. But I know that this will never happen, because such information is not relevant or appropriate for a country, state or city page; especially under the economy sections. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ajisekanla (talkcontribs) 16:48, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Response to your posts on 18:30, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Whisp, I’m glad that we are making progress here. Unfortunately you are still making the same mistake.

“First, there is a consensus that "corruption" is an issue in Nigeria": Take a look at this Google search: [1].” This is not evidence of “consensus,” it’s just shows how effective Google’s search engine is. Check out these search results: America Rascist[2]; Mexico Kidnapping[3], Thailand Drugs[4], Houston Racist[5] and Houston Corrupt [6]. Pretty incriminating stuff, including articles in major papers (kidnapping gets a mention in the Economist) and a Houston Councilman’s racist outburst on radio. As you can see a search result does not suddenly change an irrelevant opinion into a relevant fact.

“As for corruption and 419: I found a source from Haverford College written by Harvey Glickman” Excellent work, I’ve read this article before and though dated is a pretty good article which I think would be a welcome addition to the article on Advance Fee Fraud. However it does not show (nor can be manipulated to support) the claim that Advance Fee Fraud is 1. Government supported activity or 2. Key to the Economy of Nigeria; and ‘‘‘does not change the fact that this issue is not relevant for a country, state or city page.’’’

“…could not operate without political connections.” The Drug trade[7][8][9][10], Organised crime[11][12], Prostitution[13][14][15], Identity Theft [16][17][18][19][20] in the US are examples of politically connected illegal activity that impact the economy, and generate Trillions of dollars each year, in fact one could argue that the US is a nexus of these kinds of illegal activities. However, that does not change them from crime issues to economic ones, or make them relevant for inclusion on the country, state and city pages under the economies of the affected countries (in this case the US).

“…your arguments about knowing what an economy is, ETC. do not convince me.” My superior expertise, education, experience and proximity is relevant to this issue, but I am not asking you to take my word for it. Do the research, go to the World Bank, IFC and Nigerian Central Bank, recognised organisations that are more qualified to speak on the economy of any nation that either you or I.

You think that 419 is not notable enough to mention in the Nigeria page while I think the opposite.” Thank you for highlighting the key issue here. It is a matter of opinion and not fact. Let’s look at the comments on the Nigeria page shall we? 4 editors (Anon - 192.206.151.130, Crud3w4re, FireWeed and you) feel that this should be mentioned on the Nigerian country page, while 5 editors (Anon - 196.46.241.40, Rexparry Sydney, Tsadori, Alexplaugh, Eoghanzer, excluding me) feel that this is not appropriate or relevant and have raised concerns about the overwhelmingly negative portrayal of what should be objective and neutral information. The consensus is not in support of this view.

“419 should …not be a large mention” Actually as I have pointed out several times already, mentioning a crime issue, not matter how small, on a country, state or city page would be an exception to all other pages of this type in the entire body of Wikipedia and as such cannot be included. Ajisekanla (talk) 09:48, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Response to your posts on 00:23, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

You said: “…we do things by consensus. There is no policy stating that crime cannot be mentioned on city pages, so we decide by arguments.” Actually WP:Policy says: “Most other policies derive from consensus, which includes: … 2. Current conventions, practices, and standards, established over time by consensus among Wikipedia editors. …Wikipedia policy and guideline pages are not in themselves the source of Wikipedia policy. ...The purpose of a written policy or guideline is to record clearly what has evolved as communal consensus in actual practice, rather than to lead editors prescriptively toward a given result.” In short, the practice of other editors across Wikipedia becomes wiki-policy.

You said we: “are in a content dispute - Call it a content dispute” You’re right this is a content dispute, about the insertion of original research. These are statements are unsubstantiated opinions which reflect your view.

You said you: "...hate having to read through long blocks of text." My comments are actually well put together and well articulated. I have been careful to ensure that you clearly understand the problem with your suggested entries, which has required repeated examples and responses to your statements which indicate your difficulty grasping this. I know that it is sometimes uncomfortable learning new things, but you are the greatest eventual beneficiary. Ajisekanla (talk) 16:49, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Albeit us Wikipedians" Even though I am not as "old" a Wikipedian as you, I am a Wikipedian. I know that it can be hard to avoid biting new comers, especially when they hold an opposing view, but that does not justify it. Please stop doing it.

"...we do not appreciate Wikipedia:Meatpuppets" No we do not; and I would never solicit another person to join Wikipedia simply to support a POV. As I said before, I am confident that this argument is valid. Vague opinions about an economy should not be presented as fact in the face of abundant information, and research to the contrary. It's the quality of our edits over time that make us trusted editors. Ajisekanla (talk) 09:31, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  2. it's placement in the Economy section, and
  3. the validity of the supporting "research"

is in no way a reflection of my personal opinion of you or your work. I am committed to ensuring that Wikipedia continues to present balanced and accurate information that will help educate and enlighten. I believe we agree on this. Ajisekanla (talk) 09:31, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:YuGiOhlogo.PNG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:YuGiOhlogo.PNG.

BLP violation

Please see WP:BLP#Privacy of contact information. It is absolutely against policy to publish any contact information about people on Wikipedia. In fact, since you are very busy editing a controversial that contains BLP information, I suggest you read the entire policy. Jeffpw (talk) 11:01, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are selectively reading the policy, and interpreting Public figure how you would like. See our article about it. That woman did not ask for publicity, which is the defining trait of a public figure. She got outed, which is significantly different.
I have contacted Oversight to have the information removed from the history. They may contact you (not to berate you, but because subsequent edits of yours may be affected). There is also a discussion of this incident on the ANI Board which you may want to participate in. Jeffpw 15:06, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I really cannot see any circumstances where an individual's private details - such as their personal address could be included in a Wikipedia article. We don't even included that information for the most famous of public figures. It adds nothing to the article and in this case it seems the dissemination of this person's address has already had violent read world consequences for the person concerned. Given Wikipedia's profile, having that information in our article will likely considerably increase those who would become aware of it. Wikipedia policy is pretty strict on this - indeed preventing the publication of personal information (accurate or otherwise) is expressly given as a reason for blocking someone from editing under WP:BLOCK#Protection. Can we agree that this material will not be reintroduced into the article? WjBscribe 15:29, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think you may have been looking at the wrong part of the policy. Wikipedia:BLP#Privacy of contact information does not include a public/private distinction. WjBscribe 15:36, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is absolutely no way that this individual counts as a "well known public figure" - they wouldn't even be notable enough for their own article. Their sole significance is for involvement in this controversy. Those not familiar with this suicide story will never have heard of them at all - saying that anyone involved in a big news story is a public figure would include fair too many people in that category, which was I think expected to be exceptionally small. WjBscribe 15:42, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bad call

Not everything that is "public knowledge" should be in the encyclopaedia. And the address of the person who allegedlydrove Megan Meier to suicide is oe of those things that I believe should not be in, per WP:BLP. Guy (Help!) 15:39, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
