DYK List of plantations in West Virginia
Caponer,
I'm ready to wrap up this review in a way that says I've done my basic review, and it can be promoted as such, or an ALT hook can be suggested. I certainly think there can be other hooks, but I don't want to hold up the review that way. The one open item can be found on the template, which is a sentence I believe needs to be sourced. It's the kind of thing that might raise questions re no sourcing.— Maile (talk) 17:02, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
- Never mind. I just saw you took care of it. — Maile (talk) 17:05, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
Reviewed, awaiting your response here, thanks! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:54, 4 January 2014 (UTC)
Hi there. I think you'll receive a bot notification but wanted you to know that I've passed this article and I'm waiting for Dr. Blofeld to guide me on how to wrap up the review. Thanks for your swift work on improving the article and for your patience with me while I navigate the learning curve. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:50, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you Rosiestep! As I expressed to Dr. Blofeld, it was a privilege working with you throughout this process. No patience on my part was necessary--you're a pro! -- Caponer (talk) 16:53, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Rosiestep, Dr. Blofeld, and Ammodramus: may I humbly seek your thoughts/suggestions on a possible DYK hook for this article? There's so much content, I find myself drawing a blank after making the final edits. Since it is not a 5x expansion, it will only be eligible following the completion of its passing. Thanks again for all your extraordinary efforts in getting this up to Good article status! -- Caponer (talk) 17:08, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
DYK hook suggestion: ... that some guest signatures are still visible on Wappocomo's (pictured) mortar between the building's stone blocks? --Rosiestep (talk) 17:44, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Brilliant--thank you for your hook suggestion Rosiestep! I'll get this article to the DYK nomination page! -- Caponer (talk) 18:02, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't really do much with DYK, but the construction from ballast bricks seems somewhat hooksome to me. Ammodramus (talk) 18:03, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hmm, excellent point Ammodramus! I'll see if I can succinctly combine the two suggestions in one 200 character or less hook! Thanks! -- Caponer (talk) 18:05, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Wappocomo (Romney, West Virginia)
The article Wappocomo (Romney, West Virginia) you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Wappocomo (Romney, West Virginia) for comments about the article. Well done! Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Rosiestep -- Rosiestep (talk) 17:22, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Congratulations on another nice Hampshire County GA. You've got me curious to check out the county the next time my travels take me to that part of the world. Ammodramus (talk) 18:06, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
- Congratulations, I saw Rosiestep's extremely thorough review and didn't have a lot to add. Like Rosiestep, I noted a tendency to repetition of words and phrases, and the comma thing. I'll look through Valley View as time permits (things are busy in the new year). Acroterion (talk) 15:18, 7 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, Caponer. I looked at Valley View and the List of Plantations in WV, you did an excellent job. Did I read correctly, that you are retiring from editing? I am very sorry to hear that if true, there aren't many good editors for WV history. I am adding a subsection to the History of Slavery in WV regarding how the Emancipation Proclamation and the Willey Amendment worked together and how it affected the status of the slave population. I should have it up this coming week. Thank you again for the excellent work.Dubyavee (talk) 04:48, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking a look at both articles, Dubyavee! Sorry for my belated response--I've been knee deep in updating the article for the 2014 Elk River chemical spill. I am finishing up a few articles in my sandboxes, and once they are published, I'll be returning sporadically to get them to GA status. I appreciate your kind words regarding my contributions, especially since you are the premier editor of West Virginia-related history on Wikipedia! I've admired your work for some time and look forward to your future contributions. I'll be checking on your additions to History of slavery in West Virginia and I will continue to keep you informed should I write any articles that may be of interest to you! Thanks again! -- Caponer (talk) 19:15, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Valley PO data in Hampshire County WV
Hey there, you found an oldy BUT a goody. The USPS Post Master Finder has no research data on that PO..BUT, GNIS DETAIL data has a cool source here. The inline citation refers to the micro film roll which will have the PO application. I know of the Raleigh County data by heart, BUT looks like the citation data on the GNIS detail page has roll 641.... The GNIS ref number for this PO should be substantial enough. HOWEVER, for a populated place.......I will look a bit more .Coal town guy (talk) 14:58, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- I found THIS Do you want me to contact GNIS and have them add Valley the formerly populated place to their database, the requirement on their end would be a map showing a relative location and of course a place name showing the nomen of Valley....It usually takes about a week plus for them to add a place name in GNIS.....I know a few people there by now, so let me know what you think?Coal town guy (talk) 15:04, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hey Coal town guy, I did indeed! I decided to begin my populated place articles with Valley because it was in close proximity to Valley View, an article I recently completed and have nominated for GA review. If you wouldn't mind, that would be wonderful to have Valley added to GNIS as a populated place, in addition to being listed as a historic post office. It would also be wonderful to include that as an additional source in the article. I hope it won't be any trouble. -- Caponer (talk) 03:36, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
- The only challenge will be that its possible and probable that Valley, MIGHT be considered to be part of Romney...OR, it will be a historical place....It may take a 7+ day time period to get an answer, BUT I am on it. I had some successes with about 8 places so far in WV........In fact, I believe Chapman, West Virginia is close (ish) to there and I had that one added last yearCoal town guy (talk) 14:56, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- Hey Coal town guy! Thanks again for all your much appreciated assistance on this! I've moved the Valley, West Virginia article to the main space and will continue to add to it as I find additional sources of information. It will probably qualify as a "historical place," which is the most accurate category as it lies within the present-day corporate boundaries of Romney. Thanks again, as always! -- Caponer (talk) 05:43, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thought So, and confirmed as I called some folks I knew in Romney...GNIS will probably add it as an alias, which is very cool because at least you can cite the detail page.Coal town guy (talk) 15:00, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
- This is great news Coal town guy! Thank you so much for all your assistance. You'll have to let me know the process you utilizes, as I may have some more historical locations to share with GNIS to link with some upcoming articles I'm working on! You've inspired me to continue uncovering all those forgotten populated places throughout West Virginia! -- Caponer (talk) 04:18, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
- UPDATE, the folks at GNIS believe this should be a seperate historical community, no timeline on when it would be added to GNIS with coordinates! NOTE, the PO coordinates probably will not happen, the micro film records rely on hand drawn maps which lack proportion in many cases. GNIS concurred as I have about 200 examples of PO applications from Raleigh and other WV counties...HOWEVER, the town proper will have them (coordinates) as the map link I provided does indeed have actual proportionsCoal town guy (talk) 15:09, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Chemical spill
Regarding the info on Koch Brothers, see for instance http://www.triplepundit.com/2014/01/koch-connection-west-virginia-chemical-spill-company/ It's not in the scope of the article to explore regulations and such but the affiliatiation is important enough to be mentioned, and since there is no dedicated wikipedia entry on FI. Prokaryotes (talk) 09:26, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
- Prokaryotes, I appreciate your attention to this article, however, the mention of Koch Industries does indeed fall outside the article's scope, so it should not be included. This sort of information should be included in a Freedom Industries article, and just because one doesn't exist, it does not mean it has to be mentioned in this article. Again, I like your eye for detail, and I am usually an inclusionist, but in this case, I feel Koch Industries should be omitted. -- Caponer (talk) 13:19, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Valley View (Romney, West Virginia)
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Valley View (Romney, West Virginia) you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Rosiestep -- Rosiestep (talk) 04:12, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
- Someone else did it a few hours ago. Unlike the queues, the prep areas are not protected, so you could have done it yourself. Don't think I'm complaining; I learned this rather recently. Nyttend (talk) 13:05, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
- Nyttend, thank you for the advice! I appreciated you sharing this with me, just in case I should need to do so again in the future! As always, I continue to look forward to your latest additions at DYK! -- Caponer (talk) 17:59, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Caponer, please don't do this again. In future ask one person to review it. If they can't then ask somebody else. Asking 3 or 4 people to review the same article will result conflict and unwanted input at the GAR as what happened in this case. Cheers!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:31, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Give me a buzz when you want something else reviewed and I'll be happy to do it. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:21, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- Rosiestep and Dr. Blofeld, first I'd like to thank both of you for always being very helpful with other editors like myself, and for your own extraordinary efforts. I think I may have not communicated myself clearly though in my solicitations for reviews. I should have stated "informal review" as I had wanted each of you to take a look at the article and let me know if you had any suggestions or recognized any glaring issues. I didn't mean to cause any confusion among you! In the future, I'll be sure to be more clear about my intentions. In the meantime, thank you for all of your continued guidance, and I'll now take a look at the GAR page to begin making the necessary corrections! Oh, and Rosiestep, I'll definitely take you up on that! You're amazing! -- Caponer (talk) 17:58, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
No further apology necessary. I hope you don't mind but I've moved the apologies and concerns to the talk page and restored Ammo's comments. I think he should continue with his review. I'm sure Rosie or I will review another of yours in future. If you want an informal review with input from several people then open a peer review after it has been reviewed by Ammo.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:15, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- It looks as though I'm going to be doing the GA review for Valley View. In view of that I'll withdraw my request that you look over the St. Leonard's article (which I launched into articlespace earlier today). This isn't because I don't value your opinion, but because it gives the impression that I'm soliciting favors in return for GAs. Just to avoid any appearance of un-Wikiethical conduct...
- I drew up my list of suggestions for the VV article without specifically consulting the GA criteria, and stopped rather abruptly when Rosie notified me that I was encroaching on her turf. I'll try to conduct the actual GA review in a more systematic fashion, working on it in userspace before moving it over to the review page. The Virginia Argus review was getting difficult to follow toward the end, and I'm hoping that a more systematic layout will avoid that problem. Ammodramus (talk) 18:54, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- I check Wikipedia religiously multiple times a day, everyday, and the one day that I am absent... :) I appreciate you taking on this review, Ammo, especially considering the circumstances. I understand your withdrawal of your request, but I do look forward to providing feedback for your next big article (as I'm sure you have many more of such high calibre up your sleeve)! I will take pause and await your systematic layout before conducting edits or changes. I did, however, add two photographs of Valley View to the article. -- Caponer (talk) 19:05, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks both, I really feel that this is the best way to sort this out. I'll review St Leonard's for you Ammo, don't worry! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:07, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- Saw your latest, Caponer (removal of quotes and capitalization in Collins Tract, etc.). I'm about to add another raft of suggestions. If you don't mind, I'm going to mix suggestions based on the GA criteria with things that I think might improve the article, but that aren't GA-critical. Feel free to question any or all of my suggestions; with luck, between us we can come up with a better article than either of us could have written solo.
- I'll bullet-point my suggestions; could I suggest that you indent, but not use bullets, in your responses? (I've done this with the older set of suggestions.) That way, every bullet will start a short discussion of one point, and it'll be obvious which ones have been checked off and which haven't. If you're willing, we'll see how that works out. Ammodramus (talk) 00:04, 23 January 2014 (UTC)
- That will work fine Ammodramus--I look forward to another raft of suggestions! I especially do not mind because I trust your suggestions and judgment. I'll also try and lay off the bullet points! -- Caponer (talk) 01:02, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

VALLEY WEST VIRGINIA IS ALIVE AND WELL
Hey there- I managed to get GNIS to update their database with the Valley Data. The GNIS ref 2746817 has all the data and coordinates......OF NOTE its being treated as a Historical comunity, I did indeed update the article with the new ref data. Please forgive me if I have made an edit error...Let me know what you thinkCoal town guy (talk) 16:09, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you Coal town guy! I'm so incredibly thankful you were able to get Valley added to GNIS, and the "historical community" description fits Valley perfectly! My only concern is that the 1933 map did not place Valley in precisely the correct location, and since the GNIS used the map location, the coordinates are a bit off. I'll maintain the reference, but I'm going to revert the coordinates to the area described in Valley's POD location form. I'll have to track that down, and hope that will suffice for a correction for GNIS (I'm not sure how they usually go about this process). Also, because Valley is now located within Romney's corporate boundaries, I'm hesitant to label it a "ghost town." It was never as "town" so to speak, and there are still residents in its vicinity. It's not quite a neighborhood either, so I'm going to try and reconcile its populated place status in the meantime. Thank you again for everything, and let me know how to proceed with correcting the coordinates for GNIS! You're the man in getting this place added, and making it "real" again! -- Caponer (talk) 00:53, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS........GOOD NEWS, here is a link for proposing a name and a change to data for that name..BAD NEWS....I cant honestly say how quickly they would get to the change request for coordinates of a historic place. I did indeed speak with some kind folks there, the mission of the GNIS at this time is accuracy for current (read as non historic) locations. That being said, they do like being as comprehensive as they can, and so they help folks like me who show up with names. They are responsive, so, I would have at it...Just do not rely on a timely or non geologic time scale...MANY thanks for the star, it is appreciated..The reason I get a response on the new names, is that I have done it enough to where I am able to e mail a few folks and have a response. At this time, I still have over 100 WV names I would like to add, BUT, some of these places were so temporary, GNIS does not consider them per se.....Let me know if this helps, and fingers crossed about the DYK for sure.Coal town guy (talk) 16:06, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

DYK Valley, West Virginia
Hi Caponer. I was just reading Template:Did you know nominations/Valley, West Virginia, and if I understand what George Ho put there, the only thing holding this up from approval is that he wants a more interesting hook. — Maile (talk) 20:02, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Architecture: "The cornice of the mansion is composed of moldings decorated with ornamentation" = bit clunky. Photos: Consider moving the 1916 portico photo to the history section and clustering the architectural renditions. Archaeological excavation: "At the behest of the city of Alexandria, the excavation of the Colross archaeological site began between March and June 2005" - be careful with the overuse of 'of' within a single sentence... there's at least 1 other where it occurs 3 times/sentence. If I have chance I'll look at it again but I'm working on a bunch of other things right now. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:55, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you Rosiestep! I've cleaned up the internal citations within the History section, and I've switched the order of the images. I've changed the clunky sentence to read: "The mansion's cornice is composed of ornamented moldings." I've also cleaned up some of the usages "of." I definitely understand that you've got a lot on your plate, and look forward to any further comments in the meantime! Thanks again! -- Caponer (talk) 01:23, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!
Hi there Caponer- I've made the tweaks to get you fully signed up. Below is the standard welcome message! J Milburn (talk) 10:13, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Hello Caponer, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition began on 1 January. There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! WikiCup 2014 January newsletter
The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:
- 12george1 (submissions) and TropicalAnalystwx13 (submissions) were the first people to score, for the good article Tropical Storm Bret (1981) and its good article review respectively. 12george1 was also the first person to score in 2012 and 2013.
- Sven Manguard (submissions) scored the first ITN points for 2014 North American polar vortex.
- WonderBoy1998 (submissions) scored points for an early good topic, finishing off Wikipedia:Featured topics/She Wolf.
- TheAustinMan (submissions) scored the first bonus points of the competition, for his work on Typhoon Vera.
- Igordebraga (submissions) has scored the highest number of bonus points for a single article, for the high-importance Jurassic Park (film).
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. mayors of Beckley WV
I found a very good source for Mayors of Beckley, West Virginia. I wanted to start a category for Mayors of Beckley. I have about 15 of them. There is a historic gap due to a huge fire in Beckley destroying many early records. What say you as to worthiness? Yes, that means more articles about west Virginians....yayCoal town guy (talk) 23:26, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Coal town guy, that is an awesome idea! It's always great to see more articles about prominent West Virginians, especially local politicians. I would definitely count these articles as very worthy indeed! -- Caponer (talk) 15:59, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
- Jim Wood was able to create a somewhat cooplete listing of the Mayors of Beckley. The fire of 1900 did quite a bit of damage to Primary records. I can use his data in a boo as a ref. IF I recall one of the Mayors was also a Governor of the State, I will of course need to check. I will need some help as far as extra data, BECAUSE most of these will be stubs, and will as we go along need to be fleshed outCoal town guy (talk) 20:03, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

In the absence of a specific Hampshire County barnstar...
The West Virginia Barnstar | ||
For a long history of hard work on articles covering all aspects of Hampshire County's history and geography, and for the patience and dilligence necessary to bring many of them to GA status. Would that every county had such a chronicler! - Ammodramus (talk) 16:31, 12 February 2014 (UTC) |
- I must agree!!!!Coal town guy (talk) 16:40, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for this tremendous honor and those kind words, Ammodramus! I wouldn't be worthy of this barnstar without your great help! And thank you Coal town guy for your concurrence! -- Caponer (talk) 23:44, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- We owe Coal Town Guy a shout-out for devising the WV barnstar, making it possible for us to award it to one another. Ammodramus (talk) 02:07, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Indeed Ammodramus! Coal town guy is the most dedicated of the WikiProject West Virginia editors, and he works diligently to create and expand West Virginia-related content on Wikipedia. This is hands down the most epic barnstar of them all! -- Caponer (talk) 02:17, 13 February 2014 (UTC)
- Kelvinsong designed the barnstar after I requested it, my only spec was that it should have part of the state seal and of course the state motto. We both agreed that it turned out to be a fantastic design. I found Kelvinsong after I received the editor of the week award. He had as well. IF you need a graphic design, I would without hesitation look at the stuff he has made. Its rather impressive. So, the barnstar has 2 parents as it were. Which I think is great because it respresents a collaborative effort, the exact essence of all of our work hereCoal town guy (talk) 14:16, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

I managed to update the Pocahontas_Coalfield. I also added an image, Centennial medal from the field, I think its a better article now. What say you? I also let Acroterion know. This coal field is rather cool, it TECHNICALLY, had its origins in VA and became one of the largest in WVCoal town guy (talk) 16:20, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Need some help with the Pocahontas Coalfield
Hey- I have oldy but a goody as far as an image map question. I need an image of the pocahontas coalfield on a map. Here is the kick, I have defined its actual geographic location, Meaning, its in Tazewell County VA, and in Both McDowell and Mercer County WV.....My question is, should we A)MAKE the map with an image here, or B)Get an old map, showing the boundaries? IF I do that, what kind of copyright fight am I looking at? OR can you think of another way?Coal town guy (talk) 15:24, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- Hey Coal town guy! I apologize for my oversight in not seeing your post sooner! It quickly got buried on my message page, and I'm sorry I didn't see it until now. Let me do some digging on this one, as there are several preferable alternatives out there to how I've been making my maps :) I was in a rush when I was creating the article for the 2014 Elk River chemical spill and created that red county map, but there may be other editors on Wikipedia who make fancier maps using ArcGIS.
