Tang Soo Do and Taekwondo IP hopper vandal
Hi, there is a likely IP hopping vandal on Tang Soo Do page (and potentially on Taekwondo) who makes this crazy non-constructive edits like adding nonsense, unverifiable names on notable practitioners section and adding stuff like "art must be practiced with ska-music" and such. Based on what I see on the edit history of Tang Soo Do entry, this person has been at it for like well over two years. His IP often begins with 260x or possibly 77-something. Such as:
- 2601:543:4003:6D60:5464:D40C:5EB6:62FC
- 2601:547:180:4EC0:8483:B28C:1787:455E
- 2603:6080:2A40:16B:70BF:1876:BFAA:A801
I'm not quite sure how to deal with this, so I'm asking you admins for help. TrickShotFinn (talk) 10:53, 10 January 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, I have put pending changes on the page for three months. If that doesn't do the trick you can escalate matters to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. ϢereSpielChequers 14:51, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Kaely Michels-Gualtieri
The problem with Kaely Michels-Gualtieri is not offline sources (they are permissible), it's that several remarkable claims about a living person are so poorly sourced as to be unverifiable. "Le Temps, Dec 2016" is missing an author (if any), day, title, and page/URL. There are several more like that. Moreover, the incompletely described articles are recent enough that one would expect to be able to locate them online, but searches of the newspaper's website by her name, her stage name, "trapeze", and other keywords, both in English and in the publication's language, fail to find anything relevant, even though unrelated results are returned, even much older ones. That should raise eyebrows, and should not be accepted without question. --Worldbruce (talk) 08:27, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- That's a different issue than the reason given for the AFC decline and if that includes all the claims to notability, valid grounds for an AFD discussion. I don't see any claims as implausible, but then circus and trapeze are not my areas of interest. If you think it is a hoax then we have a deletion process for that too. How do you do what you do??
Hi. Thanks for fixing "too and fro” on Thermodynamic temperature
I am an experienced (I thought) wikipedian. I looked at your list of edits and saw that you are prolific and go rapidly from article to article. I am really curious how you choose your articles and how you find errors so fast. Consider the following three edits
18:14 Amami reversion movement
18:20 Thermodynamic temperature
18:21 (one minute later!) 2019 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team
Now, that 18:21 post was correcting a “fro” that should have been “from”. And my error was in “too and fro” and you saw that “fro” was correct but properly noticed the “too” only two words away was not. Quite a skill, there. The article on the Amami reversion movement was also a “fro/from” correction.
You appear to have been using a bot to look for all instances of “fro” throughout the entirety of Wikipedia to see if a particular word du jour is being used correctly. Yes? And yet you have to manually read the sentence to understand the context and then have to be sufficiently deliberate to notice that a nearby word is incorrect.
But what tool do you use to go from article to article like that? How did you go from Thermodynamic temperature to 2019 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team??
Now… I don't quite understand why anyone would find satisfaction with what looks like editing drudgery; must needed and meticulous drudgery, but drudgery nonetheless. Anyway, thanks for the help on my article and for what you do on Wikipedia as a whole.
Regards, Greg L (talk) 01:48, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Greg, the main tool I use at the moment is https://edwardbetts.com/page_patrol as for the attraction of working across Wikipedia on particular problems, I do get some very diverse reading material, and some of the typos I follow are indicative of sneaky vandalism. As for drudgery, before Wikipedia I used to give my brain a daily workout with a daily sudoku. I think my typo fixing gets me into the same mental zone. ϢereSpielChequers 06:48, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Revision Removal Request
Good Afternoon, FM Global has found evidence of slander against one of our employees on a revision of the official FM Global wikipedia page. I was referred to you by the editor who forced a new revision after the action occurred and we were hoping you'd be able to remove the revisions entirely? The reason for this is due to DuckDuckGo caching which still displays information from the previous revisions. Could you please remove the following revisions from the "FM Global" Wikipedia page: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=FM_Global&diff=prev&oldid=992129702 https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=FM_Global&diff=prev&oldid=992130097 Thank you! 159.221.32.10 (talk) 18:40, 4 March 2021 (UTC)Zach
- Hi, thanks for the note, sorry to hear about that. I have "revision deleted" the text of both those diffs so only Wikipedians with admin or dev rights will be able to see them. Search Engine caching is out of our control, but presumably they refresh their caches frequently. However anyone without admin or dev rights going though the history of the page on this site should no longer be able to see those slurs. Hopefully that and the warning already given to the IP address will fix the problem, but if there are further incidents you might want to file a protection request at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection citing BLP violations. Admin term limits
Is it like a UK driving licence, subject to periodic review after your 70th birthday? When I first passed my test I had a licence that wasn't going to expire for 51 years....
. I like that analogy. When I passed my driving test well over 50 years ago, it was assumed it would be for life. Suddenly I was 70, not living in the UK, and there was bugger all I could do about it (Fortunately of course, I have licences from other countries and I can continue to drive). Under today's rules, I almost certainly wouldn't pass a UK driving test, and it would probably be because I'm not up to date with all the traffic regulations, but there's certainly nothing wrong with my actual driving. And that's the crux of admin Admin term limits. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 21:00, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- My Mother was persuaded to stop driving at the age of 90 after a malicious lamppost stove in the back of her car. It took a pair of very diplomatic police officers and an understanding RAC man supported by her mechanic. But she did agree to have her car scrapped rather than by a new one, and also to hand in her license. I doubt she had kept up with traffic regulations such as redlines, but she didn't need to, and neither would you. Apart from filling in some forms, and nowadays having an email address, all you have to do is get your Dr to agree you are fit to drive and you are good for another three years. You might need to pass an eye test as opposed to just ticking that you are wearing any necessary glasses and still able to read a number plate at twenty metres - that bit seemed vague. Thing is, in your 70s a note from your Dr every three years might make sense, but in your late 80s? I'd have thought a more practical solution would be 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 - 5 years at 70 but an annual renewal from mid 80s. Though there's still the problem that a proportion of people get dementia each year, a problem that of course our community at some stage will share with the real world. One of my younger relatives passed the test recently, and yes nowadays there's a whole written section that we didn't have in my day. I'm sure that 60% of the pressure for term limits is from people who think that RFA is scarier than it is, and 30% from people who want the community restricted to people who are here every hour they can spare. The latest is a suggestion that people be desysopped if they have only edited in 36 of the last 60 months. So bye bye anyone who spends the summer in the garden and is on the computer in the winter. ϢereSpielChequers 21:38, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- To be fair, there's also a perfectly reasonable view that some people are here so rarely they are very unlikely to be keeping up with community standards, so I've made this modest proposal. And yes it's very ironic coming from someone who only hired or borrowed cars for most of the last thirty years and for twenty of them probably averaged under 100 miles of driving a year. 13 or older
I noticed your comments in the VP discussion and it got me to thinking back to an earlier time. I can think of a fair number of editors, and admins, and IIRC even an Arb or two who fell into that "teenage" range. Most of the ones I was fortunate to encounter were very intelligent, clueful, and quite willing to help where they could. IIRC, one of them eventually moved on to work for the foundation at one point (and perhaps they still do). I do remember a case of 3 or so young users sharing an admin. account, but never in a malicious way. They were heavily sanctioned, but did earn the trust back from the community, and I think all but 1 went back to gain admin. status (if there really is such a thing). The one who might not have I always felt certainly should have, and remained a loyal and VERY active wikipedian both on and off wiki. Ah well, I've rambled enough I suppose. I just wanted to thank you for a walk down memory lane, and some very fond memories they were. Always glad to see you lending a wise and insightful thought to a conversation. Hope you and all of yours are doing well. Best always, — Ched (talk) 11:34, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks Ched, good to hear from you too. I started here in 2007 and by coincidence that was when we pretty much stopped recruiting the young. I was active in the UK chapter for the first half of the last decade and we had the same youngest editor at I think five AGMs in a row. He wound up holding an influential international role in the movement for several years before stepping back a bit for I think his A level year. If I'm correct that this is a mobile thing, then we may get a new generation of them when and if the mobile platform becomes a little more editor friendly. If its an inline citation thing then I'm sure we will be getting some bright kids even now. It must be a decade ago when I reviewed an article on a tank, queried the 12 hp engine and had the editor say "the source say cylinders, is that different?" Then very quickly a followup showing they'd now looked up the difference:). I guess RexxS would have called that a teaching moment. ϢereSpielChequers 17:35, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

Florian Theory Page
Hello WereSpielChequers, could you help me to understand why the user Drmies deleted thousands of words (all sourced) from the Florian authorship theory in just a few minutes, without engaging in a conversation? For example there was a paragraph with Florio's proverbs and comparing them with phrases from Shakespeare's plays. All those proverbs and sentences are taken from Florio's works (First Fruits, Seconds Fruits, Giardino di Ricreazione). They were published before Shakespeare's plays. Why did the user Drmies delete those sourced information? Did the user Drmies read those Florio's works? I am honest, but I feel disappointed, shocked, shaken! Why is this censorship happen? Is suddenly Wikipedia morphing in a censored and authoritarian platform?Vale.devin (talk) 19:22, 20 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Vale.devin, it isn't censorship, just a requirement for wp:Reliable Sources especially in something as controversial as a Shakespeare theory. Conversation is going on on Talk:Florian theory of Shakespeare authorship. I don't have a view on the topic, other than that such debates belong in mainspace. So I don't intend to take part in that discussion. ϢereSpielChequers 20:45, 20 June 2021 (UTC)

Unprotection of Chuck Close
Hello WereSpielChequers. Would you consider unprotecting Chuck Close? The subject has recently passed and the original rationale for protecting the page against BLP violations might no longer apply. Regards. Seloloving (talk) 15:38, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Seloloving, I've had a look, four years is a long time to leave an article under pending changes protection. The death has certainly lead to a spike in edits, and most of those look good. But earlier this year all the edits seemed to be vandalism and its reversion, so the article still seems to be a vandalism target four years after I set pending changes. Given that pending changes doesn't stop people editing, but it does ensure that all edits are reviewed, I think it probably best to keep this one under pending changes. Hi @WereSpielChequers, thanks for making the edits you did on the article I started (Draft:Sheetal Agashe). I redrafted it after another user pointed out that some of my print sources couldn't be found/accessed by them. I wanted to ask you if this draft has any potential. I wrote about the subject because I was doing a college project on her and her family and saw that she didn't have an article. I've semi retired my account due to an overall discouraging experience editing Wikipedia for the first time. If this article has no potential, I wish to db-g7 it and fully retire my account. Let me know, thanks! AngryMushroom (talk) 14:18, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

- I read it, went through your contributions, and started a response before I had to deal with some real life things. So I'm replying four and a half hours later. On a 24 hour website where we hvae people from every timezone, sameday is a good response time if you want a specific individual. Back to Ms Agashe, offline sources are fine. The removal of those sources was with an edit summary that said they couldn't be found. If you decide to stay or return we can try and find out whether theperson who'd removed those had looked offline or just online. On a broader note, we have a lot of spam on this site, so any article about a businessperson will attract attention. In the specific case I'd concentrate on the acting part of her career, and maybe avoid articles on currently trading businesses and businesspeople until you are a bit more experienced. RfA 2021 review update
Thanks so much for participating in Phase 1 of the RfA 2021 review. 8 out of the 21 issues discussed were found to have consensus. Thanks to our closers of Phase 1, Primefac and Wugapodes.
The following had consensus support of participating editors:
- Corrosive RfA atmosphere
- The atmosphere at RfA is deeply unpleasant. This makes it so fewer candidates wish to run and also means that some members of our community don't comment/vote.
- Level of scrutiny
- Many editors believe it would be unpleasant to have so much attention focused on them. This includes being indirectly a part of watchlists and editors going through your edit history with the chance that some event, possibly a relatively trivial event, becomes the focus of editor discussion for up to a week.
- Standards needed to pass keep rising
- It used to be far easier to pass RfA however the standards necessary to pass have continued to rise such that only "perfect" candidates will pass now.
- Too few candidates
- There are too few candidates. This not only limits the number of new admin we get but also makes it harder to identify other RfA issues because we have such a small sample size.
- "No need for the tools" is a poor reason as we can find work for new admins
The following issues had a rough consensus of support from editors:
- Lifetime tenure (high stakes atmosphere)
Because RfA carries with it lifetime tenure, granting any given editor sysop feels incredibly important. This creates a risk adverse and high stakes atmosphere. - Admin permissions and unbundling
There is a large gap between the permissions an editor can obtain and the admin toolset. This brings increased scrutiny for RFA candidates, as editors evaluate their feasibility in lots of areas. - RfA should not be the only road to adminship
Right now, RfA is the only way we can get new admins, but it doesn't have to be.
Please consider joining the brainstorming which will last for the next 1-2 weeks. This will be followed by Phase 2, a 30 day discussion to consider solutions to the problems identified in Phase 1.
There are 2 future mailings planned. One when Phase 2 opens and one with the results of Phase 2. To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Hi Jonathan
Was hoping to see you at the meetup! :) I wanted to ask if you could do a prose review for Ceres (dwarf planet). I don't feel confident in my ability to judge my own work. Serendipodous 17:20, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Mrs WereSpielChequers has now had her booster, so I think it should be safe for me to attend next month. As for Ceres, you might want to double check the mass, at one point it is described as 25% of the mass of the asteroid belt and another as nearly a third. This could of course relate to different widths of the asteroid belt or different measurements of it over time, or even that it is one third the mass of the rest of the belt. I'd offer to help, but I doubt my kitchen scales would be big enough. I'd also rewrite "for periods of up to two million years or more" as it reads like something from a timeshare advert or the Haynes manual for Buzz Lightyear's backpack. False Information under article titled"Samaale"
You have put false information under the article titled "Samaale". For starters, Darod is not a Samaale tribe. They married into Samaale through the Samaale tribe Dirs daughter Dombira. Also Gardhere is not a pre- hawiye but a separate lineage that includes - Garre, Saransoor (Degodia, Gaaljecel, Massare, Isa), Owrmale, and Garjante.
The Ajuran are also a separate somali lineage. What are you sources since this information is readily available everywhere. 45.221.74.222 (talk) 10:34, 13 November 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled
A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:07, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

RFA 2021 Completed
The 2021 re-examination of RFA has been completed. 23 (plus 2 variants) ideas were proposed. Over 200 editors participated in this final phase. Three changes gained consensus and two proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration. Thanks to all who helped to close the discussion, and in particular Primefac, Lee Vilenski, and Ymblanter for closing the most difficult conversations and for TonyBallioni for closing the review of one of the closes.
The following proposals gained consensus and have all been implemented:
- Revision of standard question 1 to
Why are you interested in becoming an administrator?
Special thanks to xaosflux for help with implementation. - A new process, Administrative Action Review (XRV) designed to review if an editor's specific use of an advanced permission, including the admin tools, is consistent with policy in a process similar to that of deletion review and move review. Thanks to all the editors who contributed (and are continuing to contribute) to the discussion of how to implement this proposal.
- Removal of autopatrol from the administrator's toolkit. Special thanks to Wugapodes and Seddon for their help with implementation.
The following proposals were identified by the closers as having the potential to gain consensus with some further discussion and iteration:
- An option for people to run for temporary adminship (proposal, discussion, & close)
- An optional election process (proposal & discussion and close review & re-close)
Editors who wish to discuss these ideas or other ideas on how to try to address any of the six issues identified during phase 1 for which no proposal gained are encouraged to do so at RFA's talk page or an appropriate village pump.
A final and huge thanks all those who participated in this effort to improve our RFA process over the last 4 months.
This is the final update with no further talk page messages planned.
