Not always vandalism - see this, for instance, was actually constructive. Nothing recent, anyways, but if he reappears agin let me know as soon as you can and I'll issue a warning if applicable. Thanks, GiantSnowman 14:24, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Help! Alvorense has two names

Alvorense has two names:

Which is the correct name for a club article Vasco? Kind regards League Octopus (League Octopus 14:34, 24 May 2012 (UTC)).

— Preceding unsigned comment added by D946 (talkcontribs) 15:05, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Further to our previous discussions on this, please can you add full cites to this article. You removed the cite I added without any justification. The only cite you've got does not actually prove that was his first game. Is there a ref for a list of Bilbao games that would prove it? Eldumpo (talk) 07:59, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for adding some cites. That Bilbao profile is a good source, and I will look to add a direct cite to the list of games played. Eldumpo (talk) 19:55, 24 May 2012 (UTC)

Changing Jose Dominguez' height

The infobox height was actually stable at 1.60 for nearly two years, and was originally sourced to the Premier League stats pages (now dead, so we can't check) and then the Independent piece still present in the lead section of the article, until you yourself changed it to 1.64, without any explanation, with this edit. The Playfair Football Annuals from when he was at Spurs also give 5ft3 (=1.60). Although there are plenty of quiz questions on the internet that give 1.63 as the height of various shortest players ever to play in the PL, e.g. Alan Wright. The string of external links in the article variously support 1.65, 1.64 and 5ft3. Kicker.de, which is a reliable source, gives 1.64. Though if we're having an infobox height above 1.60, we'd better remove the sentence about shortest PL player...

As I said in my edit summary, I don't really care how tall he is, particularly as there's no clear consensus on the question, but it must be referenced to a reliable source. If you think 1.64 is more likely, use the Kicker ref. Changing one height to another where there are no inline refs, but where the new height is backed up by a source already in the article, as the recent anon did, can't possibly be considered vandalism. If there's an inline ref, then changing it without adding a more reliable or convincing ref to back up the change, would be vandalism. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:47, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Luiz

Since you ask, you were right to remove it, but you'd have done better undoing and writing an edit summary, such as "unsourced personal opinion" or "per WP:NPOV". Rollback is only for reverting vandalism, and the powers-that-be can (and do) remove access to it if people use it as a quick alternative to undoing or manual editing: see WP:ROLLBACK#When to use rollback. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:46, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Not sure what the problem is. If the edits aren't vandalism, then we shouldn't use rollback, fullstop end of. If the offending edits are consecutive, you can get rid of them all at once, either with undo or by opening the last good version in the edit window and saving it unchanged. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:21, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Hadn't seen your reply to yourself at my talk page before saving the above. That sentence might justify using it where the same editor had in the same recent batch of edits made repeated similar unconstructive edits, but (IMO, anyway) you'd have to remove the first one with normal editing and an explanation to the user before going on to rollback the rest. Best not to use rollback unless it's obvious vandalism. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:25, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Bom retorno

RaulseixasRaulseixas 20 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Yes, welcome back Vasco. The place is better with you. I understand our third game is against you lot. Ha, we'll make minced Linguiça out of you this time, and I hope that's just metaphorically. Drmies (talk) 16:43, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Valero & Riau

I have added both articles to my watchlist and will monitor fir further disruption. Thanks, GiantSnowman 15:05, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

I'll monitor Leite as well. Don't forget - revert, then warn using the templayes at WP:WARN (you really need to start doing this - even if they ignore you, keep on doing it! Warn level 1, then 2, then 3, then 4 - then you have evidence that they have ignored you and continue to vandalise) then report at WP:AIV. You have a MUCH better chance at AIV if warnings already exist on the IP talk page. GiantSnowman 16:44, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Valero

  • Re copyedit: I don't tend to look at who made any previous edits, so I've no idea whether you wrote it all or not. The edit summary was more a reminder to myself to check it over when I had the time, rather than just reverting the anon. For instance, "Grown through the ranks of Real Madrid" just isn't English, there were various spelling and grammar bits that needed fixing, and some of the refs didn't verify their sentences, e.g. the CBS ref for his international debut didn't actually mention his name...
  • Re citations: it doesn't matter what style we use, either {{cite web}} style templates, or hand-coded, or any other permitted style, but we should pick one method and just use that. See WP:CITEVAR. The Valero article had more refs formatted with the cite templates, so I standardised on those. If you want to have them all hand-coded, please feel free to do that. If using cite templates, it doesn't matter what order we supply the parameters in, they automatically come out in the standard order.
  • Re linking: we're advised against putting two or more links next to each other so it looks like a single link, see WP:LINK#General points on linking style bullet point 5, that suggests choosing the most specific link. We're also advised against expecting the reader to guess where a link will go: if the word "match" is blue, the reader shouldn't have to guess that it actually links to 2006–07 Copa del Rey. They shouldn't be expected to hover over every blue word to see if it's a useful link or not, even if they have the technology to do so.
  • Re piping club names: it's standard practice both in English and Spanish prose not to use the full club name. The Spanish match report from the Real Madrid website refers to the teams as Real Madrid and Écija, not Real Madrid C.F. and Écija Balompié, standard written English refers to the clubs Mr Valero moved to as Villarreal and Mallorca, and so should we. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:42, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Anfres Guardado

Thank you for improving it, I really only updated his stats. The article was a big mess before and it was really outdated. GoPurple'nGold24 18:44, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Nuno Mendes

Greetings Vasco. Thank you for your help. He does appear to have fallen off the radar completely. The source I provided for Valecambrense did say he was with them when I added it but it isn't there now so maybe it was just a trial like you said, or he suffered a serious injury, or just didn't want to play any more. I'll amend it now. Argyle 4 Lifetalk 01:25, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Diogo Amado

Hi Vasco - I've added it to my watchlist. As I've said before, just revert & warn. No need for anything more such as some of your more passionate edit summaries - that's probably giving them the fun they seek. Thanks, GiantSnowman 14:53, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Haha, no, I am going to Porto for a week. Anyway, I have proposed a community ban for Antony at WP:ANI. GiantSnowman 18:17, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

I see someone's already taken care of it. (Admins will sort out things like this if you report them to the right place, you don't need to ask me every time you want an admin to do something.) Hut 8.5 15:03, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Dear Vasco,

Can you help me with a page. I need help putting the kits for the teams involved with the 2012 Taça da Liga Final. Gil Vicente's kit for the final was yellow.

Woolridge

Hello, there. I see Bagumba replied about this elsewhere, but yeah, there was a discussion about combining the links at the NBA project (WT:NBA). Frankly, I don't care too much either way, but that's what people have decided. (In case you're confused, my last edit to the Woolridge page was to do this. I haven't done anything with the external links section of that article.)

I think if you wanted to create a separate link, you would need to account for the fact that it is a historical NBA profile: [1]. You might have to type out the whole URL for the link to work.

You know, I've seen you around NBA articles a lot, but I don't think I've ever thanked you for your hard work. So, thanks! Your efforts are much appreciated. Zagalejo^^^ 19:13, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: Luca Toni

Sorry for misinterpreting, we don't have the luxury of tone and body language on the internet, just our interpretation of what's written. But don't worry about it, I didn't think much of it. TonyStarks (talk) 00:56, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

"Timmy"

I've dropped a note at their latest talk page, hopefully they'll see it. It's difficult trying to communicate with someone on a dynamic IP because they get a fresh IP address, and consequently a fresh talk page, every time they log in. If they persist at Vierinha, take it to the article talk page, and explain there what the problem is. Then if they persist, have a look at the Dispute resolution policy page and see if there's any helpful advice there. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:37, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Wouldn't worry about Eren Derdiyok, those comments were weeks ago, and someone's worked on the article since. If I were you, I wouldn't use rollback on their edits: it isn't vandalism, because they are (however incompetently) trying to improve the encyclopedia. Remember that unless it's incomprehensible, libellous, or blatant copyvio, there's no real rush to fix it, and if some of it's worth keeping, you can always just cut the really bad parts and keep the rest. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:10, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Sorry

I'm literally on my way out for the evening, only came back to the computer to shut it down. If he's still not had an answer when I'm next on, I'll look at it, but kits is not my strength. again, sorry. Struway2 (talk) 18:38, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

I've fixed the Benfica kit so it displays, someone else had already changed the Gil Vicente one, and I've left a reply at his request at WT:FOOTY. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:01, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

~~ tot-futbol (talk) 22:47, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Re: WP:FOOTY

Hi Vasco! Like my message said, I wasn't trying to be rude at all, I tried my best to get my point across without you taking it the wrong way. I was just genuinely baffled as to why you brought it up, nothing more. Sorry if it did come off rude it was not my intention at all! Like I've said before, we don't have the benefit of tone and body language on the internet, just our interpretation of the words. Take care, I'm guessing this won't be the last time we misunderstand each other :D, so apologies in advance for the next one .. TonyStarks (talk) 03:13, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Hélder Postiga

Vasco, I think I must have missed the memo saying we should selectively pick and choose how/where we display team names? I've never seen the bio of a player who has competed for an English club ever be formatted like that. I can guaranteee if you flick through Category:Tottenham Hotspur F.C. players, at least 99% of the articles use "Tottenham Hotspur" and not the shortened "Tottenham" in the infobox, in section headers, in its first instance in the text (lead and main body), career stats table etc. Can't say I've ever seen it done otherwise in all my six years here!

Another couple of minor 'bones to pick' with you. In the ntupdate infobox parameter you replaced "18:55, 9 June 2012 (UTC)" with "9 June 2012", but the two update parameters should be updated using five tildes (~~~~~), meaning the former is the correct style. Also, I'm a little confused as to what the space between DEFAULTSORT and the first category is there for; there's no visual disruption from it but I can't see any tangible benefits either. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 14:23, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

To be honest it seems natural/normal to me seeing the full team name (without the F.C. of course) being displayed in the infobox/career stats etc, so I don't have any qualms with it. Also, I think shortening it might be a little misleading, giving the impression that the club is only known as "Tottenham" (obviously that can be put right by people using the wikilink to the club's article, but on first sight anyway). I agree with your logic regarding DEFAULTSORT, but I'd regard DEFAULTSORT and categories as being part of the same section; instead I'd add spaces inbetween squad templates and Persondata templates, for example.
And I can't say I'm all that worried about how England will fare at the Euros; I'm always more concerned with club matters, so I'm just satisfied (to say the least) with York returning to the Football League. At the end of the day England will finish where they deserve to finish, I'm not a great believer in luck, and that'll be somewhere behind the usual suspects of Spain, Germany, Holland, Portugal etc. Although I would enjoy watching another tearful performance from your man Ronnie! Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 15:19, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Timmy/Pablo

I'd seen Timmy96's comment. He hasn't edited since under that name, although he has anonymously, but to be honest I'm not prepared to use all my Wiki-time chasing one disruptive editor round the encyclopedia. Much prefer writing. I used the Spanish article for Pablo's debut because I wanted to use what it said about his performance during the game. The ESPN one just listed his name in the teamsheet. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 06:43, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Borja Valero and the use of the edit summary

Vasco, please don't carry on at me in edit summaries. That's not what they're for. If you want to discuss the particular wording of part of an article, or how Wikipedia guidelines on linking apply to that article, then please do it calmly at the talk page of the relevant article, or at the talk page of an editor who you think may be able to help. Struway2 (talk) 15:43, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

If the article's being actively edited, then it may be not unreasonable to communicate by edit summary. Nobody had touched Borja Valero for weeks, I saw the summary by chance, and if I misunderstood its tone then I apologise.
As I've said before, we aren't writing for the football expert. We're writing for the general reader, or for the reader who may follow football but not be well informed on European competition formats. It may be obvious to you and me that league finishing position in one season gives qualification for the following season's European competitions, but what harm does it do to make it clear for those to whom it might not be obvious? There's no need to include the 2010-11 Europa League format every time, but then again, there's no need to construct sentences so that useful links are hidden under unexpected words where the reader might not spot them.
Please feel free to seek other opinions. Struway2 (talk) 17:21, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Vasco. I took some photos of this club last Summer and have written a new article for CD Operário. If you have taken any photos of football grounds of middle and lower tier Portuguese clubs it would be great to use them to enable me to develop a reasonable club article or two. Hi Vasco, how are you? I hope all is well. Anyways, for the article in the title, I added an almost complete infobox to the article. I was just wondering if you could expand the text of the article. He's an Angola player who is born and raised in Portugal. I remember reading a long time ago that he got into a car accident with some teammates while he was at Boavista and that kind of slowed down his career. However, I can't seem to find that article anymore. I figured it would be easier for someone that speaks Portuguese to find it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and take care. TonyStarks (talk) 20:28, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Just had a look at the article, great work! Just one thing I have to annoy you with, CA Bordj Bou Arréridj has to stay like that. PC updates

Hi Vasco, no it's nice and rainy here in Northern England. Fancy swapping? Regarding PC updates, I tend to change the date to the day of update, not day of game - but as long as the date is accurate, there's no real harm. Technically I could change the 'pcupdate' parameter every day and it would still be correct, as no more games have been played? GiantSnowman 14:58, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

"playing club" I think - but we're both right. Basically as long as the date and the stats are both correct and match up, we're fine. You keep on doing your way, I'll keep on doing my way - everyone's happy! GiantSnowman 15:13, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Vasco, sorry for my tardiness in responding. That's fine, I never read anything into it. It seems our standards for category organisation do differ; I usually put personal (YOB, LP, POB), nationality, national team cats, playing position, clubs, divisions (both of those in chronological order), expatriate. This article provides an example of this in practice. I guess the difference between our styles is a national/cultural thing; what I've described seems to be universally applied for English-based players, but perhaps not for others.

While we're in dialogue, I'd like to explain my edits at Bruno Alves. I don't think it's particularly necessary to have the "Team" and "Individual" subheaders, as I think our readership will easily realise that Individual isn't a club, or some similar type of confusion. I'm also unsure how "*Taça da Liga Runner-up: 2009–10" is incorrect. Nobody is saying or implying that everything before the colon is part of the competition name. Rather, I would think that the format reads as follows: [Competition name] [Result (if won leave blank, if runner-up then say as such)]: [season]. Like this, for example. Hope that makes some sense. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 23:55, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Portuguese Second Division

Sorry Vaso I missed your question. No I have not been able to communicate with Secretaria but I sort of understand people that just want to concentrate on their particular Wikipedia task. There are sadly very few people contributing to Portuguese football on WP and in my view we should do our utmost to try to keep everyone on board. In my Finnish football work I have come across a guy like Secretaria that just will not communicate but when you look at his work one soon appreciates that he is the prime mover of top level Finnish football. Going back to Secretaria he did not want to reply to my communication but he did respond with his actions to my Makeover of Portuguese Football submission to WP FOOTY. I sort of appreciated that.

Chato, chato! Creio que devemos estar unidos nessa.
Certo, entendi. Eu desisto.
It seems to me that the {{Catalan name}} template would be more appropriate since he was born in Catalonia and his name uses the Catalan "i" instead of the Spanish "y" (see "Gerard Piqué i Bernabeu" and Spanish naming customs#Catalan names). Obviously I'm not Spanish or from anywhere near there, so I don't know the exact situation, but from what various Wikipedia pages say, {{Catalan name}} seems right. – PeeJay 12:18, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
I completely understand that argument, and I will always revert anyone who tries to claim that Pique, Xavi or anyone else is a Catalan footballer since Catalan is not a nationality. However, there are certain regional customs, such as naming conventions, that should be highlighted through use of templates like {{Catalan name}}. Also, I don't see the problem with the infobox saying his birthplace is "Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain". Catalonia is a region of Spain, not just a wannabe country. – PeeJay 12:24, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
If it's for space concerns, then fair enough. I'm not sure I agree entirely, but I'll leave it now. – PeeJay 12:29, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
By the way, Google Translate is a wonderful thing. It helped me realise that Marcospace has no reason for wanting "Catalonia" left out of Pique's infobox. Therefore, I will put it back. I would do the same with any player, whether they are from Catalonia, Extremadura or Aragon. I'm not trying to support some sort of Catalan nationalist cause so don't give me bullshit excuses like "compression", because that is clearly irrelevant. I like you, man, I think you do good work, but don't antagonise me just because Marcospace has some anti-Catalan agenda that he wants to fight with me about. – PeeJay 11:44, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
And if you could pass this message along, the only reason I'm focusing on Piqué is because my watchlist covers every player who has ever played for Manchester United; it just so happens that he is the only Catalan to ever play for us, so if there are specific guidelines regarding Spanish player articles that I'm not aware of, please let me know. And don't let the language barrier stand in your way or Marcospace's way again. – PeeJay 11:48, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
OK, perhaps "bullshit" was too strong a word, but it seemed like you were using "compression" as a lame excuse to remove "Catalonia" from the box. I know you're not trying to eradicate all mentions of it from the article, but I get the feeling that Marcospace does have some sort of Spanish nationalist agenda (although the language barrier might have something to do with that). As it stands, putting "Catalonia" in the infobox does not expand the box too much – the place of birth is still narrower than the playing stats section – so I can't see why anyone would have a problem with it beyond anti-Catalan sentiment. Sorry again if I sounded too aggressive; as I said, I think you're a good guy. – PeeJay 15:11, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and what I found using Google Translate was that Marcospace seems to have no reason for removing mentions of "Catalan name" and "Catalonia" other than WP:IDONTLIKEIT. – PeeJay 15:12, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, it should definitely be included in the body of the text, that much is certain. To be honest, I don't really care whether it is included in the box, but I am opposed to people deleting or adding content for reasons of personal politics. – PeeJay 15:36, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I wouldn't put county/region in the infobox - just city and country - but I would put it in the main body. GiantSnowman 15:47, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Juan Riquelme

So you are mad that I added a source about Riquelme leaving Boca? How is that over editing? Rupert1904 (talk) 16:57, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't think I try to over detail articles. I just try to update them when something important happens and scoring your first goal, or multiple goals, or a game winning goal, or a goal in a derby match, etc are key things that I think should be included in a wiki file. I hate all the football related articles on wiki that are under detailed and are stubs and all I want to do is make them all better quality by editing and lengthening footballers pages with relevant info and good sources. Sorry for trying to help. Rupert1904 (talk) 18:18, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

You obviously don't know English as well as you think you do, I was not being sarcastic at all. I want to help wiki better and I have been dedicated to doing just that for the past few years. I did not talk about 25 of the 38 games Lisandro played in a given Ligue 1 season or Huntelaar in 34 Bundesliga games. It seems that you just want to target me and this is curious because if you have ever seen the Eden Hazard page you could see that has bucket-loads of, probably excessive, info and all I want do is make other pages up to the quality and credibility of his and others. Abraços. Rupert1904 (talk) 18:52, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Will you please stop trying to act like a victim here. You judge me by my editing articles skills and say I edit as I want with no regards for others and that I OVERDETAIL, which is in fact aggressive since you wrote it in all caps, once again you fail to understand the concepts of my language. I speak a little Portuguese but you don't see me being abrasive about it and attacking page edits that you are proud of on wikipedia. How about yo go back and look at the Lisandro page before I ever started editing it and you can compare the current revision to that one and see what you like better. And secondly I was just pointing out that it was not sarcasm, because it is hard to judge inflection over text and it's a hard concept for non-native English speakers to understand in English just as it would be in any other language. And finally with my articles I try to make them as great as they can be and I want to help them achieve the GA status like I did with Atletico Madrid and PSG so why are you judging me and my edits if you are not one to judge on Hazard's page. Desculpe por ferir você, obrigado e bom dia. Rupert1904 (talk) 19:24, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

"don't know what have i done to you, only wanted to help from the beginning" - you wrote this to me a few days ago, just wanted to clear the air, I never did anything ugly or disrespectful to you but it seems the opposite for you. Wikipedia is open to the public as us editers all know and I can see when you and Jaelle communicate about me and try to demean and belittle me and I do not appreciate it. Thank you and I hope you stop doing this to me and other users. I have never stated that I think every goal is important and don't add every goal to every page, for the record. Nicola Legrottaglie

Hi Vasco, I was honestly a little bit offended when you assumed that I would just care less or wouldn't reply to your message. That isn't the type of person I am, nor is it the type of editor I am. I always reply and I am always very willing to compromise or discuss articles. I actually did not realize the issue regarding A.C. ChievoVerona. I had continuously just thought that it was simply a typo. I see now that the "name" is not separated and I apologize. And as for the sub-sections - I only added those this most recent time that I edited Legrottaglie's article. I have looked over the revisions that you made and just feel that some of the detail that I added makes the article more equipped. If you don't mind, I was going to touch it up again with a few things that I believe will enhance the article, and if you disagree, we can speak again. Thanks! Have a nice weekend as well. Vicente

Hi Vasco, as you may have seen Vicente is scheduled to return to Brighton training tomorrow after sorting out 'personal issues' back in Spain. Don't really think that news warrants a mention on his article though. At Brighton, he plays as an attacking midfielder usually in a 5 man midfield so I agree this should be his alternate position.RM-Taylor (talk) 19:03, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Sergio Marcos

22 games in 2009-10, 36 in 2010-11, 29 in 2011-12. 22 + 36 + 29 = 87. How about doing the research properly instead of trying to overrule somebody who actually watches Atletico B every week? I know it will be deleted, you could have at least changed it to Villarreal B player now though. Thanks --82.32.214.23 (talk) 21:23, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

No need for the apology man, it had slipped my mind too that Villarreal B were also Segunda B too so sorry as well. Anyway the page will be gone next week, keep up the good work --82.32.214.23 (talk) 21:34, 8 July 2012 (UTC)

Juve10

Hello again Vasco, I just received the message you sent to me today. I have not been online the past few days. Apology completely accepted and I am thrilled that we have reached a common target. I agree completely with the decision you made in regards to Barzagli and his transfer fee. It has very little - if nothing - to do with Legrottaglie. Thank you for respecting the edits and enhancements that I have made to the article and I will also respect yours. I am Juventus fan...with a hometown in Catania...so as you can tell, these are the two clubs that I keep up on the most. Have a good week and I will speak with you again soon. Thanks! Juve10 (talk) 14:35, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. I will take that into consideration. BTW, this IP: 217.129.65.54, that I stumbled upon on the Thomas Schaaf article; is that you, or someone you know? 62.50.175.31 (talk) 01:12, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi, regarding templates; first I think that awards should come, then [random club] managers, then current squad and then league managers. (like the article with Mourinho). Regarding bold – I can drop that. – 62.50.175.31 (talk) 20:00, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Yeah, i can probably agree on the "(1)", but I guess it is a bit inconsistent to remove them. But I agree that it is a bit unnecessary to have the (1)'s – 62.50.175.31 (talk) 20:21, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Overdetail

It's fine, don't worry about it. It's just tough when you think someone is criticizing your work when you are proud of it and work hard on it. If it is any consolation you can look at my recent contributions and see that I only do the expanded reference style that y'all prefer. Rupert1904 (talk) 15:03, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Catalonia & templates

Hi Vasco - I have reverted and warned our Catalan friend; regarding U19 templates, they are allowed as long as they serve a purpose i.e. link between a number of players, not just 2 or 3. So you might well se U17 templates that link 25 players - that is fine - and you might also see senior templates that only link 1 or 2 being deleted. Regards, GiantSnowman 15:50, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Quanto ao Tiago Ilori, permite-me discordar e manter a minha versão.

Enfim, a cidade vive e respira o clube. Portanto, muito boa a tua escolha, deixa-me dizer-te!

Well thank you for correcting that page, I wasn't quite sure about it either, I gained my information using Football Manager biographies since they are supposed to be as they were in reality. But as far as I know he was part of the U21 Spanish Team as we read in the Greek newspaper and he had 1 official appearance as well with Valencia, he also had played many matches with Valencia B. (talk page stalker) Greetings Panos. Have in mind that Football Manager is just a game and it gives no proof as to whether the gathered information about the ex-careers of players is 100% accurate. So use it rarely, especially when more reliable sources are present. Cheers. Kosm1fent 06:25, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Skrewum8

hi, Vasco,

Cyperus here. you have made a mistake, Duckadam is 1.93 but the databases are wrong.

here is a photo with him and Roxana Ciuhulescu from Promotor, she is well known in Romania for long legs and a height of 192 cm:

also an article of his biography to confirm his real height:

http://biografii.famouswhy.ro/helmuth_duckadam/ (Inaltime: 1,93 cm)

and a photo with him and Florin Prunea; about Prunea (1.83 m), the Romanian press always wrote he was a pretty small goalkeeper. you know, goalkeepers have around 190 cm. Prunea was a rare case and about Duckadam they never talked like he was a short GK. :)

see the photo, Helmuth has 10 cm over him!

Raulseixas 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Obrigado pelas respostas, amigo.

Queria melhorar o artigo do goleiro Rogério Ceni.

Pode me ajudar.

Sim, tinha pensado nisso.

-- Jun19 (talk) 26 February 2012 (UTC)

RE: Apologies

No need for apologizing as we are both improving and making Wikipedia even better.

-Etzo- ~

Dear VascoAmaral I am writing in reply to your comments you made on Revision history of Moisés Moura Pinheiro:

Composed very poor overall display of article (those REFS! and that language, do we have to write "SIDE" every time?

From this comment you seem to have significant problems with my writing style, especially how I composed and displayed the article by using prose and paragraphs. The reason I use paragraphs is because in Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout it clearly states under Paragraphs that Bullet points should be minimized in the body of the article, if they are used at all

You also mention that I use the word "SIDE" an awfully lot throughout the article, that may be however I have to make sure that everyone who reads that article is fully aware who I'm referring to. For example Braga is spoken throughout sveral times in that article and I have to make sure that people understood I meant the football side Braga and not the place. Now you may argue that I should have written S.C. Braga throughout, however I was keeping continuity after some else wrote Braga first within the Infobox (please speak to them why they did that).

Finally those REFS! yeah I'm pretty bad at getting them propery written, the reason being is that I find they slow you down when you're writing an article, however I do save the reference page and I was gonna eventually get them propery written out but you came along and did them, considering you did a good enough job on them I'll let you carry on :)

P.S. I will carry on composing the articles using the paragraph format, however I will try to use the word "SIDE" a lot less. User talk:Kai Lau 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Chao Vasco saludos a Portugal.

New message – Ulof4

Não me respondeste.
Me ajuda nessa?

:) Quanto as observações, todas muitos válidas.
Bom domingo.- --Marcospace (talk) 23 June 2012 (UTC)

Cumprimentos.

Saludos a Portugal.

Task force

Amado / Nekounam / Riquelme

Haha, sorry Vasco, have been meaning to reply but kept on getting distracted:

  • Diogo Amado - I will re-add to my Watchlist to monitor.
  • Javad Nekounam - please use the talk page, if you revert once more you will have broken 3RR and I will have to block I'm afraid. If still no luck then try WP:AIV / WP:RFPP. Please consider this a formal, final warning - I will issue one to the other editor momentarily.
  • Juan Román Riquelme - I will also add to my Watchlist to monitor for vandalism.

Need help with Portuguese gold record references

Hi, Drmies referred me to you. I am having trouble finding reference documentation for two record albums, 67 and Leva-me P'ra Casa by Lúcia Moniz, that are said to have gone gold in Portugal. I have tried to access the Associação Fonográfica Portuguesa website, but I can't find gold record information on that site as I can for US works on the RIAA site. Can you possibly point me in the right direction? (Oh, and Drmies says that you need to stop editing football articles and get on the real stuff?) Thanks in advance. Doc2234 (talk) 00:28, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

  • AL, Thank you for the help. Lúcia Moniz' article on en.Wikipedia lists the two more recent albums as having gold RIAA certification; but I couldn't find them in the RIAA database, and thought that the AFP would have information. So, I am still looking to see if I can find something that provides proof one way or the other. Thanks again, and don't get stressed from Wikipedia! Doc2234 (talk) 23:59, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Dear AL,

You spoke about me editing the Moreirense F.C. notable former players. I am writing to you to say that is the notable former players the same as the famous players. I was unaware of what criteria to follow to include certain players on the list. I apolgise for this.

I have also edited the U.D. Oliveirense, A.D. Ovarense, C.D. Trofense, C.F. Uniao da Madeira and the Gil Vicente F.C. pages because the information of current activity of the club is outdated and the squad is not correct, the articles are incomplete and there were no references on the pages.

My apologies, I saw it in a sport news column on the Internet: http://www.goal.com/en-my/news/3895/spain/2012/07/14/3241110/official-alberto-rodriguez-joins-deportivo-on-loan-from-sporting- I believe that provides an adequate source for the transfer. :)--RedBullWarrior (talk) 13:59, 23 July 2012 (UTC) Sorry, I never properly read your message and realised the diffs you left, my bad.--RedBullWarrior (talk) 14:03, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Alright, just seemed to be a bit confused. But nevertheless, thanks! Arbero (talk) 17:59, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Short or extended version of provinces and so.

Hi, I remember you have been saying me about how you use the extended versions in the article body, and I have been doing that about clubs (short version in infobox, extended in article text), but for the cases of Yugoslav Republics and Yugoslavia (exemple Socialist Republic of Montenegro/SR Montenegro and Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia/SFR Yugoslavia), there really is no reason to leave them extended, as after all, it is the "Montenegro" and "Yugoslavia" parts that are important (with the prefixes only indicating the correct administrative version of the territory) while having the "Socialist Federative bla, bla is really not that important and takes too much space. It would be like writting extended "Republica Portuguesa" for Portugal, and is not practical. Can I please ask you if we can agree on this? Please. It is absolutelly consensus wide to use the short versions, even in articles bodies. Abraço! FkpCascais (talk) 01:38, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Actually, I can make you a perfectly reasonable comparison. For exemple, we pipe F.C. Porto to Porto in infobox, right? But the extended version is F.C. Porto. Now, what you are doing is like writting Futebol Clube do Porto, and you must agree that would be just unnecessarily too much, right? Same with SR Serbia and others... SR and SFR are perfectly enough, and if anyone doesn´t know what they mean (although many people nowadays do), they can automatically see it simply by going on top of the link with the mouse. I just edited the Milan Purović article where I found that and edited it, and I know you have been taking care of that article. FkpCascais (talk) 01:43, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

The article about Socialist Republic of Montenegro is written in extended way (SR Montenegro short and most used), but you are aware that the case is exactly the same as FC Porto, and F.C. Porto is ONLY not written in extended way on en.wiki because of stylistic preference (although you have Futebol Clube do Porto on pt.wiki for exemple), but FC Porto and SR Montenegro are actually correspondent in style. You are, among houndreds, the ONLY editor who is writting those Yugoslav territory names in extended. If I am wrong please give me one single user who follow that. I am really sad that you are being stubborn on this, as you have not even one heavy argument for backing why you do differently than all others. I am really not sure why you don´t want to follow what all users from the Yugoslav region and the rest of the world do. See all political and other non-football articles and you will see that nowhere is used the extended version, and much less reason for it exists in football articles, where the initials are perfectly enough. Othewise we should writte the extensive names for all countries, and that wouldn´t be a good idea at all. SR and SFR are perfectly fine to indicate the eaxct period, and the extensive version only distracts the reader who is obligated to read all that bureaucratic name for no reason whatsoever.
Sorry, but no, your "rule" of writting everything in extensive in the text is already polemical even for clubs (as most even FOOTY users in practice oppose it and don´t writte the extensive names in article text), but I have been following it, but country and region names where the absolutelly established is to use the initials, is too much and not practical at all. Sock

Hi AL (as you now seem to be known!), I'm aware of this user's sockpuppet history and have launched this investigation, although I wasn't aware that he's been quite so prolific. You'd think he'd have taken the message by now that his editing is disruptive and as such not welcome. WP can be a particularly curious place at times. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:35, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Have you tried leaving the admin a message on his TP? As you say, it shouldn't take too long getting the block sorted, considering how clear-cut the case is. Perhaps ask GS or another football-minded admin to do the business? Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 22:48, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Think you may have misinterpreted me, I wasn't suggesting you leave a message on Mançester's TP, I was meaning the busy admin you mentioned. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:04, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
Looks like the same guy to me so I've added him to the investigation. I've contacted Elockid (talk · contribs), who blocked an earlier sock, so hopefully it will be dealt with soon. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 14:56, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Does the source mention that he is Catalan? if so, and if the source is reliable, then we should also consider mentioning it - though on the same par as his nationality. It's the same as saying "A Portuguese from Lisbon" or "A Yorkshireman from England". GiantSnowman 15:48, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

If a reliable source mentions that X is Catalan, then so should we - but that does not mean it should be in the lede. See the slight difference? GiantSnowman 08:04, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
The more I think about it, the more you're right - remove these. Just as you wouldn't call Wayne Rooney a "Scouser-English" or Ronaldo a "Madeiran-Portuguese". GiantSnowman 14:11, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

But there is no natural flow of the article when writing is at the bottom and after bullet points and tables. There really should be a justification for having tables and bullet points above freeflowing writing. Kingjeff (talk) 23:03, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello. Sorry, I'm not sure what the problem is. If we're writing a biography, why would the subject having a wife and family not be relevant? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:58, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

As to mentioning a subject's family, it's a normal thing to include in a reasonably well-developed article like this one, but not in excessive detail. Reviewers at WP:GAN tend to expect some personal info. Though some editors go into far too much detail about children's names and dates of birth, which in my view is intrusive and probably runs counter to the WP:BLP policy. Does look a little odd where there's only one sentence, as in Mr Butt's case.
I see Kingjeff's point (at least I do now: hadn't initially realised the matter had already been discussed, sorry about that). A section as short as that does look rather odd in general, but it shouldn't really go below the tables. If I was redesigning the existing content, I'd probably go with the layout at Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players, putting Personal life instead of Early life and including where he was born in that section instead of in the club career bit. And probably put the club stats before the honours rather than after. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:37, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Confusion

Was this you I reverted? I immediatelly thought it was one annoying Serbian IP, but just later understood it was perhaps you, also because of this message of yours to Jaysuc. What´s going on with the dates? Abraço! FkpCascais (talk) 06:56, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Sorry about the edit summary of mine, but, hmmm, Al, I think you are not right about the pc&nt updates... I actually think you can use the current date without any problems if the stats by that date are correct. You even have a functionality (type 5 times ~ instead of date) which is actually used by many editors and writes the hour and date of the time of the edit. I think you are misisnterpreting the parameters. They don´t need to be the date of the last match, as I think you are suggesting. That is what I feared you meant from your comment at Jaysuc´s talk-page. Sorry, but I think you missinterpreted this :( We can check it somewhere if you want, but I am quite sure you are not obligated to search the exact date of the last league round, that would be quite painfull for editors editing leagues they are not familirised with (imagine editing a Portuguese player in Hong Kong league, you certainly don´t need to search the date of the last Hong Kong league round to update his stats...).
If you know the stats are updated, you can perfectly add the current date. I am quite sure of this, but we can check it somewhere if you want. FkpCascais (talk) 02:19, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
I fully understand the logic behind your reasoning (adding the date of the last match played), but I think that in practice the pc&ntupdate functionalities are not meant to be used that way, but simply to add the date in which an editor has updated the stats. That is why you have the 5 tilts (~) option (personally, I rarely use it but many do) which gives you the exact present hour/minutes/date when you edited the update (whenever you see a time display like this: 02:51, 19 August 2012 (UTC), you know the editor used the 5 tilts), and certainly the 5 tilts will not give you the date of the last match. Just as curiosity, I often use the "next day" date when updating, so one knows that the match played the day before is included.
I searched about what the documentation says about the pc&ntupdate usage, and check out here: Template:Infobox football biography. The explanation which says:
{{{club-update}}} (previously {{{pcupdate}}})
A timestamp of the last time the player's infobox career statistics were updated (not needed if the player has retired).
{{{nationalteam-update}}} (previously {{{ntupdate}}})
A timestamp of the last time the player's infobox national statistics were updated (not needed for former players).
may be a bit dubious, as it leaves it open about what "last time" means, the date of the last match (as you sugest), or the date of the simple editing update. However, when you see the exemple from the infobox, you can see they used the date display with 5 tilts - 22:21, 26 October 2009 (UTC) - which confirms that what matters is the time of the editing update. I supose that you never usually used the 5 ~ option for the updates. Neither I did, as the tilts appear in pairs, just like when you sign the comments using 4, but here you need 5 of them, and the 5th is invisible, so it is not much practical for me, as I never know for sure if I tiped it, or nor, and it was allways easier for me just to add the date. FkpCascais (talk) 02:51, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
AL, sory to insist, but there is nothing confusing about this. You are still missinterpreting the updates use. Either you clearly acknolledge that you are wrong, or, if you don´t beleave me, lets expose the case at FOOTY and see what the community has to say.
Sorry, but I am not OK that despite my post here, you keep on doing things your way, wrongly advising editors (as you did with Jaysuc) and even adding exclamation points when removing other people´s (correct in my view) update edits. I need to have a clear answer, not just "it´s confusing so I keep on doing things my way". Sorry for this. FkpCascais (talk) 23:24, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
FkpCascais (talk) 23:33, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
I just now realised that you edit-warred me at Francisco Manuel Durán. Not nice. FkpCascais (talk) 23:40, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
OK, OK, I didn´t meant it as a hursh acusation, but by then I had already approached you here on your talk page, so you could have at least discussed this first. That is why I never want to leave things "confusing" but rather clear them up and decide which edit ahould stay.
Regarding the edit, well, the pc&ntupdate issue is opened at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#PC.26NT_updates_in_infobox. Regarding the categories, I usually tend to use the under-21 NT cat more on top, where the senior NT cat would go (to be together if the two exist), just that. And about the Jagodina sentence, it makes more logic to me to have it in a separate paragraph as it is a new chapter, new country, new league (next we´ll add him the debut data and so...), while we could join the Orihuela data to his career in Spain in the earlier paragraph. Makes sense? FkpCascais (talk) 00:02, 20 August 2012 (UTC)

Eu arranjo as páginas.
Secretaria, 28 August, 2012, 16:16 (UTC)

Just a question

Greetings Vasco! Would you kind to help me? I would like to upload some photos, but what is the method when I want to upload them? They have to have some licences or copyright tags or what. Yours sincerely, Creed;)

Llorente again...

Hi there AL. I've made some tweaks to the Llorente page, essentially to clean up the written English and to try to tweak the stats so that they actually add up - there seem to have been some rogue goals added to his early years with Bilbao. I *think* I've got that just about sorted now - although it's not so easy to get the stats to actually agree when comparing different sources of course.

I've also added a little to the lead which you might want to cast an eye over - as well as removing an image which was making life difficult and adding some international detail and stats tables. It's sort of getting there I think. All we need now if for a shed load of speculation about who he might join to start! Blue Square Thing (talk) 13:18, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Looks good to me - the source is better for sure. In the lead, should it be "club legend" or "Bilbao legend" though? The source actually says "Bilbao legend". Or we could go with club "legend"? Blue Square Thing (talk) 10:58, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
I think I'd rather go with what the source says if we're going to put it in quotes. And, yes, good teamwork - almost tiki-taka... Blue Square Thing (talk) 17:26, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

César Azpilicueta

Hello. I've warned that user, and explained what the warning was for - the persondata thing does seem odd, I wonder if they had any idea what they were doing - and will keep the page on my watchlist. The interwiki link probably got lost when he reverted to his previous version. As to changing over honours and stats, as far as I recall, that was in relation to one specific article, rather than any sort of community decision. It's a matter of taste. FYI, "right back" is standard English for a right-sided fullback. If someone plays both right-back and right-centre, then you'd probably say "plays on the right of defence" or suchlike. "Right defender" doesn't sound natural. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:39, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps because historically, positions were very specific: there were backs and halfbacks and wing-forwards, so you had a right back and a right half and a right wing. In more recent times, when formations became looser and positions less strictly defined, you ended up having to describe where the player operated rather than just naming his position. That's a theory I just made up, but it sounds convincing. You could always try asking at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:19, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

PC&NT updates in infobox

Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Football#PC.26NT_updates_in_infobox. OK? Agreed? FkpCascais (talk) 06:16, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Más em relação a editar, a mim vais me ver sempre a cumprir o establecido.
FkpCascais (talk) 06:25, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Timmy

If you think his additions are vandalism, warn him and report him at WP:AIV, but I'm not sure you'll convince them that his edits are vandalism. His English is still poor, but he's not just copypasting now, as far as I can tell. And (apart from at Vierinha) he does seem to be adding sources, which is good. Maybe try undoing the unsourced, incomprehensible or trivial, but copyediting anything that might be useful? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:02, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

The Borja Valero bit was close-ish paraphrase, but so is your version. Please can I suggest that if he's adding sourced info that you're going to keep, that you copyedit it with a neutral edit summary such as "copyedit", rather than rolling it back and then re-adding an edited version with a not entirely neutral edit summary. Rollback is ONLY for vandalism: a sourced, relevant edit, even if the English isn't that great, is NOT vandalism. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:06, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
No, I wasn't implying your English was as poor as Timmy's. "Close paraphrase" means "not an actual copy-and-paste, but very close to the wording of the source". Kindly rephrase which line? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:55, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Fine by me. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 19:06, 23 August 2012 (UTC)

Azpilicueta intro

It's nothing to do with policy or consensus, the other editor was just copyediting the English. He's playing for Chelsea in whatever competitions they play in, not just in the Premier League. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 17:46, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Have I missed something with that Soccernet stats page? As far as I can see, it contains no league games, some domestic cup games, and two European matches. The article's stats table contains lots of league games, a different number of domestic cup games, a very different number of European matches, and a French supercup. Feel free to slap me round the head with a wet fish if I have missed something, but I thought a reference stuck on its own above a stats table would be expected to verify the information in the table: i.e. to link to a reliable webpage that contained the same numbers as in the table? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 07:44, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Jandro

I don't have anything against you personally but I will continue to edit Wikipedia in line with policies and guidance, and that will include inserting cited references and deleting uncited information, as necessary. You seem to be increasingly trying to WP:OWN certain articles, whereby you instantly revert material that is not exactly how you like it. In particular I note that you immediately reverted my bdfutbol cite. I would also suggest that you tone down your edit summaries. Also, please note that the second paragraph is uncited. Eldumpo (talk) 18:21, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Re Arruti, not all the facts are supported by the cite e.g. Eibarresa, Alaves .In general, not every word needs to be cited, but the facts need to be, and no one should be including text not supported by a cite. You can just cite once for a whole paragraph of text, as long as all the facts are from that source, although you should not of course just copy the text verbatim. Eldumpo (talk) 20:32, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Using rollback on apparently non-vandalism edits

Did you have a good reason for this one? Struway2 (talk) 15:29, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Please try to at least look at an edit before rolling it back. Apart from the fact that we're not supposed to use rollback for anything other than vandalism, it actually takes longer to rollback, go back and fix any of them that were mistakes, and go through the rigmarole and irritation value of discussions afterwards, than it would to wait long enough to inspect an edit first. Most edits aren't vandalism, you know. Have a look at the policy on the subject. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:09, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Sock

Hi, if the IP makes more edits I'd recommend you start placing relevant warnings on his TP, or else it's less likely admins will become aware of his actions. You should definitely consider installing WP:TWINKLE, with this it takes only seconds to add warnings. Anyway, I've added the IP to the sockpuppet investigation. Our mutual friend is back once more

Greetings AL. Antony1821 seems to be back with 46.103.80.134 and CT Cooper is on vacation, so I notified WP:FOOTBALL instead (see here). Have a great weekend and happy September! Kosm1fent 19:10, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Whew, CT Cooper blocked the range. However, even if the loan is season-long, the infobox documents the player's current, not future career (see here). Moreover, nobody knows if the loan isn't extended for a year, so 2013 is best left out. Cheers! Kosm1fent 04:21, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

AL - my understanding of Spanish may be basic but I know enough, and the message you have sent is completely inappropriate. Please remove it at once. You have to learn to ignore the trolls - see Wikipedia:Deny recognition for why - simply revert and report. GiantSnowman 15:19, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for removing it. You should report to WP:AIV or WP:SPI - and don't forget I'm here. GiantSnowman 15:29, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
I;ve warned the Barca IP, I'll continue to monitor. Who's called you a faggot? That's not acceptable at all. GiantSnowman 18:35, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
So you suspect Scoelho86 and the IP are the same editor? One being nice, one being nasty? If so, simply ask Scoelho86 to stay away from you / your talk page - if he doesn't / refuses, we can ask for a formal interaction ban which means administrators will be able to block him if he intervenes. In the meantime, if the IP taunts you anywhere on Wikipedia - let me know as soon as possible. Don't respond, that'll just make him happy to see you angry - I'll deal with it. Sound like a plan? Hola

Hola Vasco, Aqui Coelho.

Have a look at the template documentation, or at WP:CITEHOW, it might help. Roughly, if it's the name of something that's published, such as the website of a newspaper or a magazine, then it's a "work". If it's the name of something that does the publishing, such as Sky Sports or the BBC, then it's a publisher. There's a grey area in between. Take ESPN Soccernet, or whatever it's called these days. Some people would call it a work, some a publisher, some would say |work=Soccernet |publisher=ESPN. None of which are entirely wrong. Using "work" puts the name in italics, using "publisher" doesn't. On the Sports Illustrated front, I'd say that Sports Illustrated itself was a magazine and hence a work, whereas the website SI.com probably goes in the grey area. Not worth worrying about, either way. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 20:36, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Michu and Real Oviedo NAME

Hi AL. Why did u erese my text about Michu early years?. He was a Real Oviedo player. He played in Real Oviedo Senior before gone to Celta B. And the real name for this spanish team is Real Oviedo not Oviedo. I know Racing de Santander and sporting de Gijón have Real in their names but Real Oviedo case is similar to Real Sociedad. Re: Santi Carzola

Very Sorry for the late replies. I am very busy right now and I dont plan on doing normal wiki work till Friday (Just started school and trying to adjust and of course... SUMMER READING TESTS!). Till then I am only coming on wiki to update scores and results for the ongoing state leagues in India and the Indian Federation Cup. You were not rude at all and I dont want to make it seem like that, I am just to busy right now. Also I have only looked at the Early Career of Santi and I agree that it should have been deleted but I wont do a normal check of the page and your edits till Friday. I will probably check the page more in between now and Friday but I wont tell you till Friday as I want to tell you once instead of doing one part and then coming again and again. Cheers and see ya Friday. --Arsenalkid700 (talk) 19:19, 11 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey mate. I see the problems you are seeing with the Santi article. Dont worry. Pandiani

  • Piping: oddly enough, I did know that the R in the full names of the clubs commonly known as Mallorca and Espanyol stood for Real. I can even spell it, even though it's not my native language any more than it is yours. Though English is. In my opinion, Mallorca is sometimes referred to as Real Mallorca in English, Espanyol isn't, ever, Real Madrid is, and Betis probably is more than not. See WP:COMMONNAME.
  • Transfermarkt: it tends to be added to articles out of habit, and rarely adds anything that other ELs such as BDFutbol don't. The external links section isn't just a place to list all the stats sites, reputable or otherwise, that mention the article subject's name. See WP:EL.
  • Next time I edit the Pandiani article, or any other, please feel free to undo any of my changes you think are wrong and use your edit summary to explain what's wrong, or if there isn't room in the edit summary, please use the article's talk page. That way any discussion as to content or structure of the problem article can be kept local to that article, where it belongs, and can perhaps be constructively addressed by editors other than just the two of us here. Thank you. Struway2 (talk) 15:48, 12 September 2012 (UTC)
OK, I'll be straight with you. I bloody well resented you using an anti-vandal procedure to scrap my copyedit of the Walter Pandiani article, thus wasting a fair amount of my time, and then coming to my talk page with an apology that turned into a rant:
"again (again) the piping of clubs, and this time i must protest: all the clubs are to be piped to their commonnames? OK but, that being the case, what about Real Betis? Do you know what the "R" in Espanyol, Mallorca, etc stands for? Surprise, surprise, R-E-A-L!",
and then using my name in your edit summary. I did not suggest you remove that link. You asked me why I'd removed it, so I told you.
I know it's easy to misinterpret things that are said online, where we can't use tone of voice or body language, and I apologise for any over-reaction on my part. It must be doubly difficult in a foreign language. But please try to ease off a bit. There really is no need to assume that every editor is a vandal waiting to pounce, or that every editor who touches an article that you've improved is there to spoil your work. Perhaps this conversation has gone on long enough. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:02, 13 September 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) AL, quickly regarding this - you should not use rollback in a content dispute, only if it is vandalism. GiantSnowman 15:12, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Where does it written that the templates' order is: '1 - club templates; 2 - national team templates; 2 - award templates'? Is there any rule about it?

Regards, Gelu6 (talk)

  • I see that this is only your point of view. I've got the other one: Awards, like Ballon d'Or are the biggest success for footballers. The second place is on which tournaments he played with his national team. It's the success too but less valuable. And the last place should be for his club where the footballers playes. It's the most changable and less important thing.

Re: Heinze

Dude, it's OK, I'm not angry with you or anything. I'm just very busy and I don't have time to reply personally to every discussion that may require my attention. What did you think of my change to the Heinze article earlier today? – PeeJay 21:03, 18 September 2012 (UTC)

The reason why I add info to both the "work" and "publisher" parameters is that the club website is a "work" that is "published" by the club. Clubs may publish a number of different works, and have certainly been known to in the past, so I feel it is worth mentioning the specific work that each reference comes from.
And with regard to the honours, like I said at WT:FOOTY, my position depends on whether community consensus is to add non-first-place "honours". If everyone else thinks we should add runners-up etc. then I think third-places should be added too (as long as a medal is given out for third place). – PeeJay 06:46, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
It's not up to me to approve any consensus we come to at WT:FOOTY. If we come to a consensus, I will abide by it, although I may not necessarily agree with it. – PeeJay 01:01, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Oi, meu caro.

No Daniel Alves falta do Sevilha.

Hi AL - firstly, you please need to really start using the article talk page for content disputes, you cannot use rollback - it is for vandalism only! Secondly, you have provided a reference that he is a winger (and as far as I'm concerned, a winger is a midfielder) - that should be enough. If it's not - use the talk page. GiantSnowman 21:06, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

No, I'm saying I agree with you. A winger is a midfielder - hence why the relevant paragraph is located at Midfielder#Winger. Let's take it to the article talk page. GiantSnowman 21:22, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
No, I'm asking you both to stop edit warring.

It shouldn't just be down to us to determine what positions people play. We should base on reliable sources, ideally English-language. Consensus at Footy is that Transfermarkt is not regarded as a reliable source. Mind you, taking a step back, is this player notable. Does he meet GNG? Eldumpo (talk) 21:25, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

Many stat/databases only use 'defender' / 'midfielder' as opposed to 'right back' / 'winger' etc. for simplicity. As for notabolity, that is a different matter. GiantSnowman 21:28, 25 September 2012 (UTC)

I see you've added Spanish language sources to cite he is a winger, and if that's what they say fair enough but until the extra refs you added there were little reliable sources saying that. You should've concentrated on adding these sources in the first place rather than just straight-reverting my edits. The only revert I made was when you removed cited material. It is unfortunate that the article has no English-language cites and I would request you would add them back in. Also, the tone of your talk comments on my page is unnecessary. Eldumpo (talk) 06:43, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Rollback

Hello. What do you want to happen? Do you think you can manage the self-control to only use rollback after you've looked at the edit in question and found it to fit into the permitted uses at WP:ROLLBACK#When to use rollback? if you can, and want to try, then please do so. But if it's too difficult, you might be wise to ask an admin to withdraw it. It doesn't take much longer to deal with an offending edit by clicking "undo" and typing "rvv" or whatever's appropriate in the edit summary. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 14:36, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Hulk (footballer), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Russian Cup (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hello. As to "removed without explanation", a cited source not being online and fully formatted isn't a reason for considering it in some way not "proper". There's no requirement for references to be online. And the original editor supplied enough info – newspaper, date, author – for an online copy to be found easily enough.

The editor who removed that info was correct in that the LFP.es match details and the Mundo Deportivo contemporary match report don't include Mr Alfaro. They do include a Pablo, but LFP.es lists him as "Pablo R.FJ." Together, those two sources are in my opinion plenty solid enough to justify removing the content.

Not sure how you work out that Sansón was younger than Alfaro when he made his debut. Sansón was the youngest top-flight debutant when he made his debut in 1939, at 15 years 255 days according to his WP page, or 15 years 8 months 11 days in the ABC article that gives Alfaro his (supposed) debut at 15 years 4 months 12 days. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:53, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

You have to weigh up the quality of the sources. The governing body's official record arguably outweighs a couple of sentences in pieces written 20 and 25 years later about other people, and it's certainly true that once something gets written somewhere in the media, it can become what that editor called a "factoid" and get re-used without checking. I'm not saying the LFP source is definitively correct – it's quite possible that they got the identity of "Pablo" wrong – just that removing the content based on those sources was reasonable. I see from Mega60's post above that LFP's "Pablo R.F." is BDFutbol's "Pablo R.J."

What's needed is Mr Alfaro talking about the circumstances of his debut, or an LFP or Real Zaragoza source confirming him as their youngest debutant. And without that level of confirmation, there are clear doubts about the story – on es.wiki, es:Pablo Alfaro doesn't mention the matter, and es:Primera División de España#Jugadores names Sansón as youngest debutant – so it's best to omit it. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:44, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

LFP.es lists him as "Pablo R.J." R.F. mistake

Sim, amigo.

Hello. As to references, see WP:CITEHOW. Authors where named are required; many people don't bother with adding agencies, even when it's clearly an agency piece. Obviously, if a piece doesn't have a named author, then we don't include one: is that really baffling? As Mr Patiño hasn't got an international career, why would information about his personal life, such as his birthplace and the nationality of his mother, want to be titled International career? And as you ought to know by now, not being able to communicate with a particular editor doesn't justify rolling back their addition of valid sourced information. As to Facebook/Twitter, have a look at WP:ELOFFICIAL: there's nothing inherently unencyclopedic about including a link to the subject's official facebook/twitter (as opposed to fansites etc). hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 13:39, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps he was unaware that WP:EL explicitly permits links to subjects' official sites? cheers, Struway2 (talk) 13:54, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
Re your "cleanup": the source Diario (de) Córdoba appears to be called Diario Córdoba and not Diario de Córdoba, if their about page is anything to go by. And Mr Patiño having a Spanish father is unsourced.
As to official Facebook/Twitters/personal websites, they're not an alternative to stats sites or club profiles or newspaper articles, they're to give an insight into the subject's view of themselves. I wouldn't argue for the inclusion of everyone's facebook/twitter: most are as crap as anyone else's social networking pages, but some are informative, and those are allowed. I have no view on the encyclopedic value of Mr Patiño's personal sites. hope this helps, Struway2 (talk) 14:10, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

Ronaldo Stalker

Hello, I went back through the Ronaldo article and changed the club names back to what the talk page consensus was for them. However, as you pointed out, Marcospace did make some constructive edits so I left those in place -- I should have looked closer at his edits the first time. Here's the thing, Marcospace knows what the talk page consensus for the club names is as every few months he goes through and changes the names to what he thinks they should be. And then I, or other editors, change them back, and leave a note on his talk page to discuss the matter at the Ronaldo talk page. For whatever reason Marcospace refuses to discuss the issue or work to change the consensus to his way of thinking; he exhibits classic ownership issues with respect to that article in clear violation of the established consensus.

As a side note, the biggest point of contention is the name "Inter Milan" vs. "Internazionale" but as we've all recently seen the project-wide consensus is that the name of that club's article should be "Inter Milan" because that is by far the most common name used in English. The club name argument at the Ronaldo article is the same thing: consensus is to use the most common names in English while Marcospace wants to use different names. Anyway, maybe you can get through to him that instead of edit-warring he should discuss the issue and work to reach a new consensus. Thanks. SQGibbon (talk) 17:05, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Miguel Rosa

Always Learning,

Vê, por exemplo, a página do Ryan Giggs e vê que eles não misturam o PFA Young Player of the Year, com o PFA Team of the Year, com o PFA Team of the Century, com o Premier League Player of the Month, etc.

Apology

You did not make an edit at that time and all of the edits that I can see have summaries. Sometimes wp:huggle skips to another page without my realizing it; that might have happened. Personally, I think that from the reader's point of view, questionmarks look a bit amateurish, so I leave them blank. But there's no definitively "correct" answer. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 18:39, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't see your original question. Standard procedure at WP:FOOTY is that a player's youth career in the infobox is closed once he starts playing for senior teams. Regardless of whether he's still below pro contract age and still playing youth team football. See e.g. Theo Walcott, Jermaine Pennant, John Bostock. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 15:45, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps take a look, consider a radical change in what you do here, or just feel free to contact me via email or at my talk page. I don't know you personally, but if there is something that I can do to make it more worthwhile for you to stay here, I would like to offer my support. Why can't we get all the people together in the world that we really like and then just stay together? I guess that wouldn't work. Someone would leave. Someone always leaves. Then we would have to say good-bye. I hate good-byes. I know what I need. I need more hellos. May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. Archiving

Hi AL - as Struway says above, you need to check what your settings are with the bot. Failing that, manually archive like I do :) GiantSnowman 15:45, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Yes, do what I do - copy and delete from your talk page, and then paste into your archive. GiantSnowman 17:31, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
Hello Always Learning. If you can't persuade the bot to archive, I think I know the reason. MiszaBot will not archive into a file location that it thinks is not allowed. You appear to be using a different user name in your archive instructions. See your User:MiszaBot/config template. Change "archive = User talk:VascoAmaral/Archive %(counter)d" to employ your correct user name and I guess that it should work. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:54, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

Tito Vilanova

Please please please

...don't use edit summaries to comment on other users. Neither advertising the fact that another user is blocked nor telling another user that they're not welcome here is acceptable. Struway2 (talk) 16:27, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but if you really can't see why talking about another user being blocked isn't what edit summaries are for, then there's nothing I can say to explain it to you. Please ask GiantSnowman or some other editor whom you respect.

As to Timmy96, you may remember that he (or whichever IP address he was on at the time) was blocked in response to his "request", which was a long time ago; the block doesn't have to go on forever. Specifically re Timmy96's edit to Marco Paixão, there's a bit of copyvio/close paraphrase in the personal life which could happily be removed as trivia as well as copyvio, a bit of unsourced but probably correct and easily sourceable in the Hamilton section, and some useful additions with sources in Naft Tehran and Ethnikos Achna. Personally, I think he's improving. Struway2 (talk) 17:44, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

That message to Zombie433 on German WP about his edits being reverted on sight says he was the subject of a community ban, not a temporary block; there's a difference. Struway2 (talk) 17:45, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Honours + Vilanova

Regarding your recent edit at Pablo Hernández Domínguez, I'd like to point out I don't think there's anything wrong with the layout "Copa del Rey runner-up: 2007–08". Your argument is that the reader might mistakenly think all the text before the colon is part of the competition name, but I don't see that as likely. The layout "Copa del Rey: runner-up 2007–08" doesn't look right to me, I think there really ought to be a colon before the season. Do you think something like "Copa del Rey (runner-up): 2007–08" would be a suitable compromise option? Or is there an established format for this that's been discussed that I'm unaware of?

And regarding your Vilanova points (which I'd forgotten to repond to), I usually try to follow the format set out at Template:Cite news and Template:Cite web. Not that it matters, since the order we place the parameters in has no effect on how they appear in practice. Regaring Persondata, Wikipedia:Persondata#Name and titles states "The person's most commonly known name should be in the |NAME= field", so I would say you're correct by adding "Vilanova, Tito" in the NAME parameter. Regarding the ALTERNATIVE NAMES parameter, Wikipedia:Persondata#Alternative names says this is here "to list other common (usually international) forms of the person name, but not simply abbreviated versions of the full name". Therefore, I think adding just "Vilanova, Francesc" here is incorrect. Rather, as per the "full name" entry in the table dislayed at Wikipedia:Persondata#Alternative names, I think this is the correct place to add his full name ("Vilanova i Bayó, Francesc"). Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 19:47, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Saludos --Mega60 (talk) 16:03, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

As for Jon Pascua if he only played in the Segunda División B & lower he fails WP:NFOOTY as a player. No, thrice isn't the same as twice. See wikt:thrice#Usage notes. Netted is a tabloidy alternative to scored, but "netted a hat-trick" doesn't sound right, so given I was removing the thrice I had to change the verb. Hélder Postiga

Hi Vasco, I'm a little confused by your recent revert at Hélder Postiga. We discussed the naming conventions of English clubs earlier this year and I believe we agreed it was correct to include the full title, e.g. 'Tottenham Hotspur' rather than just 'Tottenham', in the infobox, on its first instance in the prose and in section headings. Season's greetings, Mattythewhite (talk) 00:27, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

Disagree, I'm afraid; if you take a swift look through Category:Tottenham Hotspur F.C. players I'd be surprised if you found any articles that include only 'Tottenham' in the infobox, other than in Postiga's. It's established practice for English football biographies to include the full team title in the infobox and section headings, and I'm not sure why it'd be any different for a Portuguese player. Hello. I don't think what you wrote on his talk page was rude. But, and only since you ask, I do think these edit summaries were a bit unnecessary. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:06, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Rollback his edit, then apparently grudgingly "Alright reinstated you" put most of it back, "with better refs, not links posing as such"... What's a "link posing as a ref"? Struway2 (talk) 16:24, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
In principle, I too prefer a more illustrative report than a bare sheet of match details. But we need to take into account accessibility (language) and reliability (see WP:RS) as well. For information, Soccerway is a reliable source in the Wikipedia sense, because it's the product of Global Sports Media, a recognised and reputable media organisation, whereas the content of sites like Transfermarkt and Zerozero is user-generated without any explanation of editorial oversight so not reliable in the WP sense.

In this case, neither the Soccerway match details nor the Zerozero match report says any more than Marco Paixao scored in the whateverth minute, and neither verifies the significant fact in the sentence, i.e. that it was his first goal for the club. If the Zerozero report did verify that, it'd probably justify using an unreliable source written by a random person in a language most readers of the English Wikipedia won't understand, but it doesn't.

Please don't interpret this as 'Struway says I've got to change it' or 'Struway's telling me I'm wrong again'. I'm just trying to get you to think about what references are actually for, rather than just what they look like. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 09:29, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Sporting Template

Hi Vasco, could you do me a small favour if you don't mind? I've given Marcospace (talk · contribs) a couple of warnings on his talk page regarding unsourced additions (his edits were factually accurate, but regardless of correctness a reliable source should have been provided too). Since giving him these warnings he has proceeded to add unsourced at Cesc Fàbregas, despite me trying to explain to him that sources need to accompany content. As you have been in regular contact with Marcospace, I was wondering if you'd mind explaining to him the important of providing references, seeing as he seems intent on ignoring my advice? Would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 23:25, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

I understand your edits, but most of the citations are in Portugese and one in French, for English wiki it is best for English citations. That's if you can find them! I do have a few questions; regarding his transfer, [3] It clearly says his minimum release clause is 2 mil, however it doesn't confirm what he actually went for so maybe that should be said in the article. Also, "he returned to the land of his ancestors" ? Not sure that's needed!

Re: Proposition

Hi Vasco, how are you? Hope all is well. I don't necessarily agree with your opinion. The fact that most players don't play for the NT is more of an indication for me of how important playing for the NT is. So personally it makes more sense to list national team templates first. However, I don't think there is any consensus of which to list first. I'll take it up with WP:FOOTY and see what the others think on the matter. Anyways, take care and feel free to drop by the project page every now and then, mellow or not :D. TonyStarks (talk) 04:35, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

AL, I've restored the maintenance tags here as they are valid - the article relies too much on external links as opposed to in-line cites. GiantSnowman 16:48, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Lots of stuff in the main body relies on information sourced from external links; it is always preferable for it to be referenced directly. GiantSnowman 17:00, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Correct - for example if you say 'Fernandez played 30 games in the 2006-07 season, scoring 10 goals', then you can cite the bdfutbol link directly there. GiantSnowman 21:00, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
That's probably preferable - but if no news can be found then it's better to use the stats database. GiantSnowman 21:06, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

English

This talk page is almost entirely not in English. That goes against Wikipedia's guidelines (see WP:SPEAKENGLISH). Please enforce the guideline.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:02, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) - Bbb23, please AGF. Always Learning is a near-fluent speaker of English, but deals with a lot of editors who speak only Spanish or Portuguese. Therefore speaking in those language is the only way they are able to communicate. GiantSnowman 09:43, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
Actually, I came across AL's talk page because they left a message in a foreign language on another user's talk page. Interestingly enough, User:JamesBWatson left a message on that user's page about the English guideline, which the other user deleted. I should also add that it's puzzling to me how we can have editors who can "only" communicate in a foreign language - how do they edit articles? I realize that sometimes editors can contribute constructively to Wikipedia and yet not be fluent in English, but they should be able to communicate in English, and they should at least be encouraged to do so.
AL left a very polite note on my talk page in response to my post above (probably politer than I deserved as I reread my initial post above, which is a bit tone-deaf). My suggestion is that even when someone posts in Spanish or Portuguese on AL's talk page, that they respond in English (I think my original suggestion to "enforce" the guideline went too far), and if the other editor has trouble, AL can then translate into the foreign language. In all fairness, AL, SPEAKENGLISH is just a guideline, so you can choose whether to follow it or how much to follow it.--Bbb23 (talk) 14:02, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Ajuda

Oi V, B aqui.

Tchau!

Resposta

E funcionou, pois ele parou de me perseguir.

Greetings!

Why is S.Vitória wrong and Vitória right? If we also have written "A.Almeida, M.Pereira, A.Gomes" etc, why can't we have S.Vitória?

Where's the wikipedia rule that defines this?

Cheers, Scofield 20

Boa noite,

Francisco Stromp Player of the Year

Hello Vasco,

Is it possible for me to create a page called Francisco Stromp Player of the Year. This is an annual award given to the player of the year of Sporting CP. It was first awarded in 1992. I have all the information on all the winners and I will add references.

Can I also create a template with the winners of the award as I have seen many other articles of different clubs with templates for winners of their players of the year.

Request

Please stop removing the word 'Catalonia' in the storyline of some players. Thanks. Gringoladomenega (talk) 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Location of Template:Use dmy dates

Hi, I'm curious as to why you move the Use dmy dates template from the top of the page to underneath the DEFAULTSORT, with an additional space, like here? They're automatically added to the top of the page and they seem to live happily there... Cheers, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:54, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
