Translation help

[edit]

Hi. Can you translate these names into Hebrew: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File_talk:Map_Bih_entities-he.png I require Hebrew names of these cities for improved version of that map. PANONIAN 05:16, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help. Anyway, you could not find Hebrew name for Bugojno? Is there a chance that you find this name somewhere? PANONIAN 07:57, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cdrtools, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Brasero (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thanks for preparing the RfC.

Do you think we should remove the last Con bullet point (redundant to the one I put above)?

In the examples on WP:RFC, every bullet point was signed using ~~~~.

Feel free to rewrite/replace/reword my bullet points (maybe use your signature when you changed them). I reworded your "misleading" argument, but did not insert a signature.

Thanks. --Chire (talk) 14:41, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

For the record, I disagree with your assertions. However, it seems that this calls for some third party to add their opinion. See Talk:FreePBX. Tzafrir (talk) 05:56, 11 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Map language troubles

[edit]

Hallo or Shalom, I work for the german language wikivoyage project and just have seen on Yuriks page, that you also have map language troubles, only the other way round. We lost the english language labelled map because it's not open source and I found myself with a plain hebrew language map in Tel Aviv when I opened the OSM map from the point-of-interest for one of the tel Aviv train stations last week when wee looked for the arts and crafts market - it is for us very difficult to get organized on a hebrew language only map, as you might feel with a latin letter map in Switzerland... Kind regards from Switzerland Martin - Mboesch (talk) 10:58, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Mboesch, I think it's the same issue. I'm not sure what you mean by an English language map that is not open source. Could you please clarify? As for the issue you mention: it is exactly the issue I described. So for instance the labels on a map of Athens would be unreadable for both of us (or alternatiely, pick a different example, localized by the table in Greek to me). A suggested work around (see the linked bug report) is to create a separate map whose labels default to English. The data still comes fom OpenStreetMap. Tzafrir (talk) 12:44, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Earlier, we had a separate privately financed mapserver running for Wikivoyage only, and we had the Mapquest-Maps there, with labels in English, they are not longer available for driect access from Wikivoyage as they are propietary and no direct access to the tiles anymore, but they had english language labels even for Greece (at least for the larger places) so both of us could understand. Now, the Israel maps are really a challenge for me (i can read some hebrew letters but to guess the missing vowels is quite challenging), and even more interesting are the findings when you look e.g. at Bethlechem, town label in arabic (so no one not familiar can unterstand) but roads in english... I hope, one day, there will be a possiblity to switch OSM to different language labels, the will be some people in the community helping to translate, I'm sure. Kind regards Martin - Mboesch (talk) 22:01, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Mboesch, In Israel proper the default language should be Hebrew. That is: the language for 'name' labels should be Hebrew. In many cases it isn't because it is from non-Hebrew data and thus you have English (or even in some cases: Arabic) labels. Same goes for the West Bank, only with a different order of languages. Thus whenever you see English in either places, it is generally a bug that needs fixing by the local team. English needs to move to 'name:en' labels. This is how OSM works.
If you want to set up your own map server, you can use OpenStreetMap data directly. The data is there. In the worst case you need to manipulate it a bit (override 'name' with 'name:en' where available, or whatever. I'm sure it could be done automatically). But maybe ask Yurik about it, if that is what you want to do. Or maybe check if you can assist them in setting an extra Wikimedia English only server (which is what they want to do. But I have no idea when they plan on doing it). Tzafrir (talk) 09:00, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

To edit in the Israeli-Palestinian topic area on Wikipedia accounts must be at least thirty days old and have at least 500 edits. This includes editing talk pages, with the sole exception being for very specific edit requests, which should be in the form of "change x to y for reason z". IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 05:05, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IOHANNVSVERVS, please give me the minimal credit. I provided sources for my edits in the article. I noted what I thought was clearly wrong but did not attempt to edit the article because I'm well aware that there's a difference between my common knowledge and other people's. That is what take pages are for. And now toy remove my edits from talk pages? Tzafrir (talk) 06:01, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you care so much about the rules, rename topic instead of reverting edits. Tzafrir (talk) 06:22, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Rename topic? IOHANNVSVERVS (talk) 06:26, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Until you are extended-confirmed you may only make edit requests in the ARBPIA topic area, not take part in discussions. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 11:23, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For someone who spends several hours per edit, it means not working on enwiki in parts that interest me. Tzafrir (talk) 08:28, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
