I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. Glendale, Calif

Hi,

I understand now I was working on the wrong Glendale. When I first read the article, I looked at the source for the 1855 statement. That citation referred to a reference about the Glendale area of Washoe County, Nevada. That sentence is incorrect (refers to Washoe County) . Thanks for fixing this. @MauraWen: Sorry, I figured that the undo would appear in your alerts. The Nevada Place Names reference that you're looking at has both Glendales lumped under the one heading. Where it says "GLENDALE (Clark)" is the start of the info about the Glendale in Clark County, including that it was settled in 1855. Toohool (talk) 19:08, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Gold Strike

The Gold Strike Hotel & Casino has removed the "Gold Strike" name from its large markee sign along the I-15 highway about 2 weeks ago. Talking with the staff that we know, who work at the casino, "Terribles" has finished paying the "Gold Strike" name use license agreement with MGM Grand. I have no other written reference to site. Unfortunately, Wikipedia's policy on verifiability doesn't allow us to write articles based on what we've seen with our own eyes or what someone has told us in a conversation. Sometimes this results in Wikipedia being a little behind the times when it comes to recent developments. @Engineer Lou: That page is wrong and also doesn't support the claim that the Gold Strike is now called Terrible's Hotel and Casino. It says that the Gold Strike is now called Terrible's Road House.. but that is actually the name of the huge convenience store and gas station that was built on the other side of the freeway from the Gold Strike, as you can see here. Hi Toohool. I searched Google for the citation that parlay article required, the best I could find was the one that I inserted. It explained how parlay true odds work. I work in the online gambling industry and stumble into wikipedia resources on the matter a lot, there's a ton of information missing. When I see I can help I add info or a citation link when wikipedia asks for one. I do not link to sites I promote, I link to sites that have the missing info or citation. If the reference link I added does not fulfill the citation requirements, then OK, if I stumble to another resource that explains true odds I'll try with that one. --David1768 (talk) 12:49, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi Toohool, I'm Laguna Greg. Thanks for your message. I don't remember the comment I made on the article talk page and, since you removed it, I can't even say whether I was out of line or not. Since that is a public talk page and not your own space, that was a little over the top. I know I've seen much worse, many many times over, and retained for decades. After all, that's what talk pages are for -- to talk. if you take it down, there's no way the conversation to continue for anyone. Also, Why didn't you just copy it to my talk page? Ladbrokes Coral - merger versus acquisition

Hi - The lead should reflect the main text of the article (see WP:LEAD). At the moment both citations used in the main text refer to a "merger". @Sphilbrick: I think you're mistaken. The page you cited as the source of the copyvio seems to be merely a copy of an earlier revision of the entire Wikipedia article, and lists its source as Wikipedia at the bottom. Toohool (talk) 16:11, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Toohool, Then it means there was a violation of our Copy within Wikipedia guideline.

This type of edit does get picked up by Copy Patrol and a good edit summary helps to make sure we don't accidentally revert it. However, for future use, would you note the best practices wording as outlined at Wikipedia:Copying_within_Wikipedia? In particular, adding the phrase "see that page's history for attribution" helps ensure that proper attribution is preserved.

Toohool, It's not apparent to me. You said "there is no such blanket rule against analyst opinions, and this content seems to provide valuable context about the company's position in the world". Sounds like justification for addition of material. If you had said you were reverting to an earlier version, which is a common edit summary, I never would have challenged it. This image is clearly owned and copyrighted by the Associated Press, it is not a Public Domain image. As we are using it under Fair Use that is why the existing image was the resolution it was at. Allegiant Stadium

Hey there, see the discussion we had about 3 years ago regarding future dates in the infobox, which has been the norm on similar articles about new stadiums. WP:CRYSTAL talks about Wikipedia not predicting the future, so the general use in stadium articles is avoiding future opening dates in the "Opened" parameter of the infobox. "Opened" is past tense, meaning it has already happened. It certainly makes sense to mention planned opening dates in the body of the article when they are sourced (which CRYSTAL allows), but opening dates can, and often do, change, even more so now with all the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19. Tropicana Atlantic City

Not according to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, the regulating body of gaming operations (i.e. Casinos) in the State of New Jersey their records show that Eldorado Resorts is the owner and operator and that takes precedence over any other reference because their the ones who investigated and licensed the Tropicana as its owner/operator. @YborCityJohn: The Commission is listing the license holders.. note that it says "Casino Licensee". That's the company that operates the casino, and therefore is listed in the "Operating License Holder" field. The "Owner" field is whoever physically owns the building. Oftentimes they are two different parties, with the operator leasing the building from the owner. The owner won't be listed on any casino licensing site, but you can find the citation in the History section of the article that shows when the property was sold to GLP. @Toohool:, With all due respect your wrong, the licensee is the operator and PARENT is the parent company of the licensee Tropicana Atlantic City Corp is listed as the Licensee and Eldorado Resorts as the PARENT company, no where does it mention Gaming and Leisure Properties, so I again reiterate the NJCCC database takes precedence over anything listed on Eldorado or Gaming and Leisure Properties websites because they are the regulator agency and therefore their information is the best reference.

And the point of my edit summary is that the copy I'm linking to (at HathiTrust, for example) usually has just become available because the work has just entered the public domain. Copyright for 1968 Vietnam waterboarding photograph

I know that this image was published on 21 January 1968 on the front cover of the Washington Post, apparently credited to UPI. I don't know if it was published in other newspapers that might not have had copyright notices. Is there a way to check without getting newspapers.com access? This image if it's kosher could be a great addition to a variety of Wikipedia articles. It's really hard to find images of torture actually being used, for obvious reasons. @Buidhe: I don't know a way to do it without access to an archive like Newspapers.com or NewspaperArchive.com, other than spending a very long day looking at microfilm at your local library. You can get free access to both of those archives through the Wikipedia Library if you meet the requirements.

In theory, the publication in the Washington Post placed the photo in the public domain, because there was no copyright notice in the name of the copyright owner, UPI. However, having just one example leaves open the possibility that the photo was distributed with a copyright notice but that particular newspaper neglected to print it. So we need to find several samples of the photo and see that none of them have copyright notice.

I found 9 instances of the photo in a quick search, and none had copyright notice, so you're golden. Here are 6 that lacked even a notice for the newspaper as a whole:

• The Baltimore Sun
• Kingsport Time-News
• The Press Democrat
• Daily World

@APK: I'm not opposed to replacing the image with one that better shows the scale. Couldn't say if I support a particular image as an overall improvement without seeing it. File:Man with a Camera-2.jpg would be a good one I think.

The copyright issue is that the sculpture is copyrighted. At least some of the photographs on which the sculpture is based are supposedly in the public domain, but the sculpture itself is a derivative work that is subject to its own copyright. So any photograph of it on Wikipedia needs to comply with the non-free content criteria, such as using a reduced image size and including a fair-use justification on the file description page. The photos of the sculpture on Commons are copyright violations and should be deleted; it's just that nobody has gotten around to it. (Once you start playing copyright police on Commons, it's like emptying the ocean with a teaspoon.) Toohool (talk) 18:53, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

Linking citations in references

MOS:REFLINK says "Citations stand alone in their usage, so there is no problem with repeating the same link in many citations within an article; e.g. =|work=[[The Guardian]]". Linking the source can help the reader judge what kind of source it is. I think it's a bad idea to remove a link without being very sure that it will help nobody. A lot of editors are thanking me for adding links in these cases. Even worse, you put incorrect publication names in the articles. It is never the right thing to revert all of an edit because you disagree with part of it. Chris the speller ^yack 22:41, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

@Chris the speller: My objection is not to the fact that the links are repeated, but to the fact that it is completely unnecessary and distracting WP:OVERLINKING to link to the article about a newspaper (or any of the other things that might be mentioned in a citation, like the author, publisher, city, etc.), when we all know with 100% certainty that the reader is looking for the source that verifies whatever fact they just read. Where the article has an established citation style that does not include these wikilinks, that style should not be changed without good reason, per WP:CITEVAR, and certainly shouldn't be made inconsistent by changing it for a subset of the refs. And you really can't seriously be objecting to the fact that I didn't make a zillion tedious edits by hand to preserve the barely-worthwhile "The"s that you're adding. @Juniperi: You may be right about the importance of the work you added. However, Wikipedia follows a neutral point of view policy, which says that we do not write articles based on our own viewpoints as editors, but rather summarize the views published by reputable sources. The only way we can have a "list of the most important <anything>" on Wikipedia is if we have some objective criteria based on reliable sources that have analyzed the important works in the field. If you have ideas about criteria that can make the list more comprehensive or well-rounded, with reference to sources, please feel free to raise them on the article talk page. @Juniperi: The criteria as you quoted above is that the works are listed in "surveys where authoritative sources review the history of the medium". So the sources that are acceptable for inclusion are those that span the whole history of photography, such as the Time magazine feature that listed the most important photographs of all time. A thesis that is specifically about chemograms wouldn't meet that criteria, since it doesn't span all of photography. Neither would an exhibit about chemograms.. Professional gamblers

Hello. I see that you reverted my edit on gambling. There are registered companies that are professional gamblers. Here in England, the football clubs Brentford FC and Brighton and Hove Albion are both owned by professional gamblers. They are not seen as scammers. Therefore, I would argue that the current wording that there is no strategy with an expected value of a profit is too strong. Epa101 (talk) 22:38, 8 March 2024 (UTC)

@Epa101: The people you're referring to are involved in poker and sports betting. Those are activities where a skilled player can make a profit. They are not the forms of gambling that are being discussed in the section you edited, as they do not involve "mathematically unprofitable bets". That section talks about strategies like the Martingale that many hucksters claim can be used to beat games like roulette. Toohool (talk) 02:59, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
