WikiCup 2011 September newsletter

We are on this year's home straight, with less than a month to go until the winner of the 2011 WikiCup will be decided. The fight for first place is currently being contested by Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions) and Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), all of whom have over 200 points. This round has already seen multiple featured articles (1991 Atlantic hurricane season from Hurricanehink and Northrop YF-23 from Sp33dyphil) and a double-scoring featured list (Miyagawa's 1948 Summer Olympics medal table). The scores will likely increase far further before the end of the round on October 31 as everyone ups their pace. There is not much more to say- thoughts about next year's competition are welcome on the WikiCup talk page or the scoring talk page, and signups will open once a few things have been sorted out.

If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi Tony, can you create the Wikipedia:Meetup/Chicago 5 page ASAP? (The details can be preliminary.) We're going to turn on the centralnotice for this quite soon.--Pharos (talk) 19:49, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

If the CPL is not cooperative, would you think Chicagoans might be amenable to coming up to Milwaukee as Protonk and I came down to Chicago last time? I think I could get some cooperation from the Milwaukee Public Library or the Golda Meier Library at UW-M. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:27, 5 October 2011 (UTC)
I am not sure what the turnout would be like given the modest turnout in downtown Chicago on a beautiful summer day.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 15:31, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Tony. In regards to Template:1986 NCAA Division I FBS College Football Consensus All-Americans, "consensus" refers to players who have received All-America honors from at least three of the organizations which are officially recognized by the NCAA to determine consensus (per 1990 College Football All-America Team). There are many mistakes with this template, and I'm not quite sure how you determined who is a consensus All-American here. Eagles 24/7 (C) 02:22, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tony,

Just to let you know that the Featured Picture File:Jesse Jackson, half-length portrait of Jackson seated at a table, July 1, 1983 edit.jpg is due to make an appearance as Picture of the Day on October 8, 2011. If you get a chance, you can check and improve the caption at Template:POTD/2011-10-08. howcheng {chat} 16:55, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

AA navboxes

Couple comments about the AA navboxes:

  • Why are they red?
  • The naming conventions here don't make sense, e.g. there was no Division I FBS in 1925.
  • Also, when creating new navboxes can you tag the talk page with the CFB project banner?

Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 20:50, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:20091104 Alisa Weilerstein and Jason Yoder - Saint Saëns' The Swan.ogv requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. It's an image that's on Commons, so thusly doesn't need a local description page :) Sfan00 IMG (talk) 18:52, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Stop making new templates that belong on the giant batch TFD of your other templates. The CW template did not need a footer.—Ryulong (竜龙) 20:35, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi, this is embarrassing, but Argo Tea is the first article I've reviewed for DYK, and I'm having a bit of trouble finishing up my responsibilities with the passed nomination. I see that the prep areas in T:DYK/Q are full, so how/when should I add the passed hook to that page? I've read WP:TDYK#How_to_promote_an_accepted_hook and WP:Did you know/Preparation areas, but these don't seem to address my question. I haven't wrapped up the nomination on its subpage yet because I can't specify which prep area I'm sending it to in the edit summary. Can you please explain to me how to put the nomination through? I can see that you've got plenty of experience. Great article, by the way. I once visited the Argo Tea in Union Square during a trip to NYC. It's good stuff. Okay, I see. Thank you. Armadillopteryxtalk 14:11, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Re: Argo Tea

Perhaps something like "... that Argo is the largest chain of cafés focused on the world's most popular beverage after water? I felt that explaining tea's popularity in the hook as phrased was awkward. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:08, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Ambassador for Geography of Crop Plants

Thanks for volunteering to be an online ambassador for this class. I'm the instructor, and definitely a Wiki novice. The timetable for the project is turning out to be fluid, but they have a firm Oct. 19th deadline to have a reasonable sandbox article up (short intro, outline, and references.) I'm really excited about all of the article topics they have selected. ANy feedback that you can give--especially on wiki stuff--will be appreciated.Handlemk (talk) 15:52, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

GA for Volt article

Hi Tony, about 20% of the refs in that article are from blogs. This is not really acceptable according to the RS article. The blog used has no real technical credibility.Greglocock (talk) 00:09, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

AA navboxes

Tony, there's no reason why the AA navboxes should be red. These navboxes should have default coloring as no specific color is meaningful here. I've changed the 1925 and 1926 navboxes accordingly. Also, you don't need to include {{PAGENAME}} as a sort key for template categories. That's just latent code that gunks up the works and makes maintenance more difficult. Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 05:45, 12 October 2011 (UTC)

Tony,

I'm helping to organize the NRHP photo contest, including the "Best Photo" part of the contest which will require some !voting. User:IvoShandor recommended you as the expert who should be consulted (at User_talk:Ruhrfisch#Leaves_turning_yet.3F)

I've also posted a general notice about the contest at WP:CHICAGO and am hoping that you and/or User:Teemu08 might sponsor a challenge in the contest related to the remaining 40 or so non-illustrated NRHP sites in Chicago, sites in Evanston, the rest of Cook County, or for the 5 county suburban area. More on this later.

As far as the Best Photo part of this, see Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest Best Photo. The idea is that every photographer will get a chance to show off 1 photo and that his or her peers will !vote in the best one. Due to the clumsiness of the !voting process with a large number of choices, we may have to limit the number of nominations in general, and the nominations of inexperienced editors in particular (but maybe not). I've never organized a process like this, but did manage to put up 10 very WP:Beansy rules for it. Any help here would be appreciated, and you should probably check with User:Ruhrfisch who will likely be the Sponsor/Judge.

I'd guess you remember me from previous meetings on Wikipedia, but I'll mention that, even though I now live near Philly, Chicago is my hometown. I contributed about 20 photos to the NRHP Chicago lists a couple of years ago, but haven't been back since. It's a shame that Chicago, the most architecturally important city in the US, does not have a fully-illustrated NRHP list. So I take the Chicago list very seriously, and I'd be very much obliged if you posted a challenge at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest that reads something like this:

"A barnstar will be awarded to the editor who adds the most photos to the NRHP Chicago lists for previously non-illustrated sites"

The only work involved would be to determine the winner by "counting the diffs" that the participants will provide.

I know you stay pretty busy, so I'll hedge my bets by contacting User:Teemu08 about this as well. He has added very many NRHP photos in Northern Illinois, but he may be more interested in the suburban areas.

Any help on either part of this contest would be greatly appreciated,

Smallbones (talk) 19:41, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Tony, if you feel like helping out here at all, it would be appreciated. I think this could be a fun photo contest and your experience setting up similar picture related items on the Wiki would be valuable. BTW - hope all is well in your life. IvoShandor (talk) 09:50, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Main page appearance: Crown Fountain

This is a note to let the main editors of Crown Fountain know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on October 17, 2011. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 17, 2011. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegate Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:

Crown Fountain

Crown Fountain is an interactive work of public art and video sculpture featured in Chicago's Millennium Park. Designed by Catalan artist Jaume Plensa and executed by Krueck and Sexton Architects, it opened in July 2004. The fountain is composed of a black granite reflecting pool placed between a pair of glass brick towers. The towers are 50 feet (15.2 m) tall, and they use light-emitting diodes to display digital videos on their inward faces. Weather permitting, the water operates from May to October, intermittently cascading down the two towers and spouting through a nozzle on each tower's front face. The fountain highlights Plensa's themes of dualism, light, and water, extending the use of video technology from his prior works. Crown Fountain has been the most controversial of all the Millennium Park features. Before it was even built, some were concerned that the sculpture's height violated the aesthetic tradition of the park. The fountain has survived its somewhat contentious beginnings to find its way into Chicago pop culture. It is a popular subject for photographers and a common gathering place. The fountain is a public play area and offers people an escape from summer heat, allowing children to frolic in the fountain's water. (more...)

2011 WSOP POY

Perhaps you are right about Buchanan and Moorman possibly passing Lamb. I only added the template because it was widely reported, even by Lamb himself (who changed his profile on twitter to include 2011 WSOP POY), that Lamb had clinched the award after Phil Hellmuth was eliminated from the WSOPE Main Event.

Kerwin Waldroup

Sorry to be slow in responding, but I don't know the answer to your question about Waldroup. Cbl62 (talk) 01:40, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Actually, this article from the Michigan Daily appears to answer your question. Cbl62 (talk) 02:00, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Heath Irwin

I apologize for not having gotten back to you on this. My main focus has been on Michigan football players. I've dug in on AAs who didn't have any article at all, but Irwin isn't one that I'm particularly interested in spending a lot of time on. But if there's something specific that you're looking for, I can take a look. Let me know. Cbl62 (talk)

I took Lamb off the POY section of the WSOP page and the template, I'll just wait until the award is officially given out.

Seems weird the way you list some people by their full name and some by the last name... really should be consistent.. I get that some have wikilinks and others dont but it should probably be full names for everyone.. looks odd otherwise. Spanneraol (talk) 20:24, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

If you're interested, here's a potential DYK. It looks a tedious to review articles these days and I am tired. I came up with

ANI discussion closed

I have just closed the ANI discussion you started re Ryulong. You haven't listed any specific incidents as evidence, and it's not formatted properly as a community sanction proposal, though you posed it somewhat in that manner. It's not actionable as an administrator incident response.

If you have specific cases you can present then you can follow up with a User Conduct RFC. Georgewilliamherbert (talk) 22:24, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

2011 WSOP POY

Moorman's 2nd place finish gives him 753 points, while Lamb is guaranteed at least 759. Lamb has finally clinched the award.

Re: Argo Tea DYK queue position

I scheduled this hook because it has been getting fairly long in the tooth and I was able to work it into a set without too much difficulty. If you wish I could return it to the queue and let another DYK worker schedule the hook. With the large number of hook dealing with U.S. related topics currently on the suggestions page (baseball players and things involving New York City being a large portion on this group) there is no promise that a better time slot will become available any time soon. --Allen3 talk 16:38, 22 October 2011 (UTC)

Love, loss

As we previously had agreed, all the cast information should be at the cast list article, and the main article should summarize only the most important cast info. I assume you have been and will carefully keep Cast lists for Love, Loss, and What I Wore up to date. I am not monitoring either article, because, as far as I know, you never got the script of the play. Therefore, I believe that you pulled a fast one on an unsuspecting GA reviewer. Sorry I feel this way, but I have stated over and over that you cannot write a GA-level article about a play without the script or libretto. -- Ssilvers (talk) 14:39, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
