Cultural Competency Training in Conjuction with the LGBTQIA In regards to the approach to individuals who identify as a part of the LGBTQIA community, professioanls must have a sensitive and culturally sound approach to the way in which things are brought up and said within the community. This means that professionals should have knowledge of cultural competency and trained properly on how to know the rehetoric and sensitive nature of the LGBTQIA community. In a study by Shelley Craig and other doctoral researchers, "sexual minority youth" (SMY) have been found to be "particularly vulnerable to inadequate or incompetent service provision, due to the lack of power and access available to youth generally as well as the stigmatization they experience as a result of their marginalized identities". The group of researchers also found that "SMY frequently report discrimination and negative experiences during encounters with health and social service providers". These types of behaviors with social and health service are a lack of education, training, and awareness that could help professionals approach the LGBTQIA community in a different way.
