renaming of "Image:" to "file:"

"file" is the new name for the namespace: go to any image page and you'll see that it's preceded by "file:" now and not "image:". Unifying articles to use "file" consistently helps when searching for media on pages in edit mode. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 11:12, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Pat Smear

The lead paragraph of this article describes the important elements to the article accurately and concisely. From a journalistic sense it hits each of the key notable points in the subsequent article; why he is known--guitarist, and the three famous bands he has been a guitarist for. Subsequently he appeared as a regular in a TV show. There is nothing else he has done on the same level of notoriety. The lead sentence of his "recent activity" even says: "Since leaving the Foo Fighters, Smear kept a fairly low profile." All of his other accomplishments, the details of each of his performing stints with those bands and the appearance in the TV show are covered in the subsequent article. There is no underlying scandal, no notorious incidents worthy of being included in the lead. Stretching the lead paragraph simply for length sake is improper and unsound. Placing a demanding tag on the article defaces its worth.Trackinfo (talk) 15:06, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Similar Treatment

I see that you disagree with WP:Similar treatment is okay . Note that the converse is very bad. A WP:Uneven and arbitrary treatment is OK is very bad. Thank you for not being savage and trying to attack the essay. The similar treatment essay was written in good faith and does make sense. Oh, don't get me wrong: I think that it's a valid line of thought. The reason that it's a minority position is that it's massively complicated in practice and would lead to endless wikilawyering over precedent. Quick Question

I was just going to ask a quick question about player Honours within their respective articles. If a player plays in earlier rounds of a tournament and does not play in the final then should that particular honour be listed if his / her team wins? It was just that in the article Martin Keown this exact case applies and I was going to remove the Cup winners cup in 1994 from his list but thought I had better check to get a second opinion in case a similar instance occurs.

It might be the case that Uefa gives the club a certain number of medals for players that played in the tournament but were not selected for the final, but in an encyclopedia sense I think that it should go by only the squad for the final? Monkeymanman (talk) 16:33, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

So it is policy that if a the player actually gets onto the pitch at some point during the competition and his team wins the final then that should be listed on his honours. Or is it only if they were expected to play the final? For example Darren Fletcher missed the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final through suspension but would of been expected to play and played in several of the matches of that years competition, should he be listed on his honours as having won the competition? Pretty sure that Fletcher has a winners' medal for it, yes. At least that's how it worked out with Messi. You'd probably need to check on an individual basis. I might raise it with the project to see what the majority view on the honours aspect for each player is, because it is a bit vague and different across footballers on wikipedia.

Nathan Fillion Lead Section Tag

Hi, you added a tag to Fillion's article about the lead section. I'm having some trouble understanding when the lead section should be tagged. I've looked at the guidelines, and I can see that the size of the Fillion article doesn't correlate to the number of paragraphs in the lead. But there are many articles like that. I'm not sure what would be useful to add to the lead section. The only other alternative would be to decrease the body size, not something I relish doing because it means deleting other editors' work. It's one sentence long. It contains one word ("Canadian") to cover the entire first section of the article, completely ignores 90% of his acting roles, and says nothing of the "Projects" section either. Ledes are not supposed to be exercises in brevity; they should summarise all of an article's key points rather than doing the bare minimum to provide context, as this one currently does. There's a rather heavy editorial tone pervading the whole article at present, most noticably in the "Family and early life" and "Passion" sections. The prose needs to be checked to ensure that it is neutral and that the personal interpretations of the editors do not show through. I'll try to work on this myself anyway. Hi, I made some edits re the tone tag - I imagine it is no longer needed. Also moved the "Character / passion" section of the Helen Bamber article to the discussion page re WP:BLP - 'sensitivity' and being 'conservative'. I understand that Bamber herself has challenged the article and does find material contentious, so this seems the right move re good faith and respect. Plath

Hi Thumperward, as I mentioned - The heading "Biography" is apt for the narrative description of her life - early years, college life, death. There is a section on Works including impact and critique of Plath's publications. If the photos are at automatic size then Hughes' head is larger than the Fitzroy Square house. As Father Ted once said: "these are small: the ones out there are far away". It is unlikely that a reader will become confused by a photo of a house being smaller than a portrait. making images smaller does our readers a disservice. If you look at the prevailing style of our best biographies, very few of them use sections entitled "biography" because, as I said, this is nonsensical. Would you have a chapter of a paper biography entitled "Biography" itself? I'll take this to the talk page, as I think that these changes should be undone. Samuel Johnson, Samuel Beckett and Albert Einstein use the heading "Biography". William Butler Yeats, Philip Larkin, Charles Dickens and Emily Dickenson use "Life". As 'biography' means 'the study of a life' it really makes no odds to me. Does "Life" work better for you? Whatever works. In terms of images -It wasn't an arbritary edit and it wasn't so much an issue of confusing the reader. At auto size Hughes' large scowling head is the bigger than the house. Assuming that this IP is Bluedogtn: you really need to stop edit warring over templates. If you're not capable of figuring out how to make these changes yourself then you should be trying to cooperate with editors who do, rather than annoying them. If this continues I will be suggesting a topic ban for you from templatespace, as this has gone on for long enough. The "consensus" in question has not been linked to and is certainly not consistently used throughout tennis infobox templates. If you can point me to a discussion which contradicts this then I'll be happy to cooperate, but if not then I'll be reverting this again, and I do not expect you to edit war over this again. Hennessy

Some research should be done. HENNESSY is the correct, original spelling as in the Cognac company which this page links to!!

HENNESSY is NOT an alternative spelling. It is the correct spelling! The E was added by the bigoted English who misspelled every other Irish name and mistakenly believed that English words required an "E" before the "Y".

Template:Infobox election

Hello there. Thank-you for cleaning up the Template:Infobox election. But when editing a template with wide usage, please make test edits to the sandbox. That way if there are any errors, they won't be seen on the many pages, and there aren't multiple edits in a row (I think I look like a genius when I make one massive rewrite). I also have a query, do you know why there is a problem when there is only one candidate? I am worried it may need a lengthy read through and/or massive rewrite, which I don't have the time for. Most of the changes in question were simple style tweaks, and it's far quicker to test them on the live template; it occasionally causes fallout, yes, but only briefly. For bigger changes I usually sandbox. I'll have a look into the whitespace problem; I know what's probably causing it, and had a fix half rolled out yesterday but didn't go ahead with it. Cheers.
