Speedy deletion nomination of Playing to Win

Blimey! Not only did I not know the article was up for DYK, but - although I did rewrite most of the article - the hook was actually virtually the only part of the article that I hadn't changed from the earlier deleted article. Hi. I was relying on this definition: Winter#Meteorology which makes in December, January & February. Anyway, snow in May is not unknown in the UK, much less March and although it is extreme in Scotland & NI today, I don't think it would be notable, unless it extends for a longer period. Pronunciation

Hi, TheRetroGuy. As you are interested in starting and managing projects for English counties, I wondered if the matter of the IPA pronunciation of the county names had already occurred to you. Like most words in British English that end in r, the final r in Herefordshire is not pronounced. The exception being that an intrusive r may be used to link to the pronunciation of the next word when the next word begins with a vowel, such as in, for example, 'Herefordshire apples'. Some editors - I assume ones from America - appear to insist that whether this is so or not, the correct version for the Wikipedia should be the one that shows the r to be always pronounced. Many other editors - I assume to be from England - claim that the IPA in the Wikipedia should show the most usual, most widespread, and most frequently used pronunciation, which in the case of the English counties would most likely be the one without the r. This has been the subject of rather a long series of discussions, some rather heated with personal attacks from admins. For the moment, as I think your unbiased opinion is best, I won't confuse you with links to the links to the many discussions, so I would very much like to know your basic personal opinion here, whichever pronunciation you support. --Kudpung (talk) 08:07, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Kudpung. I must admit the pronunciation hadn't occurred to me, but to my mind it would make sense to use the English pronunciation without the final r. As the counties are in the UK we should go with the British way of pronouncing them. Similarly anything American should be pronounced the American way. Good examples of this I suppose are Berkshire (pronouced in England as Barkshire) and Berkeley (pronounced in the US as Berkley rather than Barkley); then again this can be confusing when you have Berkeley Square (pronounced as Barkley Square).
