  1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
  2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Level 2 vital article GA promotion

[edit]

Hello The wub, I was just made aware of your very generous offer to donate to a charity on behalf of editors who promoted a level 2 vital article to GA status. I wanted to enquire whether this offer still stands and whether the recent promotion of the article knowledge qualifies. Phlsph7 (talk) 08:45, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Phlsph7 It certainly does, congratulations on a great GA and on being the first to claim a reward! Just let me know your choice of charity, and if you would like me to mention it at the Reward Board. You can email me if you would rather keep it private. the wub "?!" 13:21, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Could you donate the money to the "All Grants Fund" by GiveWell? The international website is [6] but since you offered the reward in pounds, it might be better to use the UK website [7]. If it's a regular practice to mention it at the Reward Board then please do so. But as far as I'm concerned, it's not necessary. Thanks a lot for doing this and let's hope that I don't remain the sole awardee for too long. Phlsph7 (talk) 13:52, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Phlsph7 Excellent choice, to be honest that's where much of my charitable giving goes anyway :) I donated the £100 to the UK entity so they will be able to claim Gift Aid (an extra £25).
Thank you for the generosity and all the hard work on the article. I noticed that you have Communications nominated too, so you might end up the second awardee too at this rate. Good luck! the wub "?!" 14:20, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that's great, I wasn't aware of Gift Aid. I have my fingers crossed for the article communication. For most of my nominations, it takes very long until they get reviewed, so it may well be a few more months, let's see. Phlsph7 (talk) 16:26, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. I have another candidate for the level 2 vital article GA award. After a lengthy review, the article Logic was promoted yesterday. Have there been any other awards in the meantime? Phlsph7 (talk) 07:47, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Phlsph7 That's brilliant, congratulations on another excellent article! Would you like the reward to go to GiveWell again? There haven't been any other awards yet, but plant and post-classical history are currently nominated, along with your own communication of course. the wub "?!" 12:28, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Could you give it again to the "All Grants Fund" by GiveWell? Thanks for your generous offer and for the feedback! My experience is that, with these articles on very general topics, it can take quite a while until a reviewer picks them up. So more patience may be needed. Phlsph7 (talk) 14:24, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Phlsph7 Donation made :) Yes it does seem like reviewing is a real bottleneck especially for these broad topics, which is a shame but understandable. the wub "?!" 15:25, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated! Phlsph7 (talk) 16:09, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. There is another reward candidate: my co-nominator PatrickJWelsh and I managed to get the article Philosophy to GA status the day before yesterday. I wanted to ask if you could donate reward money again to GiveWell's "All Grants Fund" on both of our behalf. Thanks a lot for your generous offer from both of us! Phlsph7 (talk) 07:03, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Phlsph7, PatrickJWelsh: Congratulations to both of you, a huge achievement! I can only imagine how much work this must have taken to get to GA. And not just a level 1 vital article, but the one that all roads lead to.
Confirming I've now donated the £100 to GiveWell's All Grants Fund, thank you! the wub "?!" 23:49, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@The wub, thank you so much for offering the reward! It is extremely generous of you.
And thanks also for the kind words!
Cheers, Patrick J. Welsh (talk) 00:46, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have two more reward candidates: both education and communication got promoted last week. They were my last relevant nominations that remained open. The August 2023 GAN Backlog Drive managed to speed up the process of getting them reviewed. Could you donate the reward again to GiveWell's "All Grants Fund"? Phlsph7 (talk) 08:14, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Phlsph7 Congratulations once (well, twice) again! I noticed the GAN backlog drive was happening again this year, great to see that it's made an impact. Confirming I've donated a further £200 to the All Grants Fund.
And further congratulations on the Logic FA! the wub "?!" 23:38, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reward board goodness!

[edit]
  • Found out why you thanked me for the GA of Logic. Any article requests? [The only topic I refuse to do is pop culture... and sometimes overly controversial things...] § Lingzhi (talk) 16:40, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh. Sorry. I looked at the topics on Wikipedia:Vital articles/Level/2. They're just too darn big, and none of them really interest me too much anyhow. Sorry. § Lingzhi (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
      • On second thought: OK, I dropped William Wilberforce. So let's say I take a stab at improving Education. It might take 2 or 3 months to improve it to what I think might be GA level. Then I pop it into WP:GAN and maybe wait 6 or 7 months 'til anyone dares to review it. Even at the bare minimum, that's 8 months from now, and past your deadline. And it might be 10 months... Thoughts? Plus, I would want $USD. In fact, I would only want $98, sent to an online writing workshop for a 2-year membership. That saves you a little money, but adds trouble. And then some reviewer might have idiosyncratic reasons to fail GA. Thoughts? § Lingzhi (talk) 03:10, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
        @Lingzhi: Education sounds like a tough one, although I'm sure there would be no shortage of sources. I notice @Phlsph7 has been working on that one too (!) so perhaps it could be a joint effort? In that case the reward would be split, either evenly or by some mutual agreement.
        The pace of reviewing nominations has definitely been on my mind too: it's much slower than I realised, which is exactly why I thanked you for the review of Logic! I've been wondering about ways to incentivise reviews, but it's hard to do that while making sure they keep their thoroughness and integrity. In the meantime I've extended the deadline by 6 months, since I doubt anyway that we'll hit the 10 rewards budgeted for.
        I'm not that experienced with GAN, but idiosyncratic fails aren't something I've really noticed being a problem there? If that does happen I suppose the best recourse is just to seek an alternative reviewer, which should hopefully be faster with some of the work having been done already.
        As for rewards, I'm certainly happy to purchase things up to the value of the reward if that's easier. A writing workshop sounds great! the wub "?!" 11:34, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

() I have a question: What happens if I start working on History of science, and then others join in & it turns into a collaboration? Surely this is to be encouraged. Collaboration is an ideal of wiki-culture...but then, who gets the reward, if anyone? § Lingzhi (talk) 23:03, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Lingzhi.Renascence Collaboration is definitely encouraged! Generally I think the reward would go to whoever does most of the work and leads it through GAN. However if it's agreed that multiple people made major contributions then the reward can be split, either evenly or in some ratio agreed by the collaborators. If people can't agree I suppose I'll have to adjudicate somehow, but would hope it doesn't come to that. the wub "?!" 21:53, 15 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Discontent Content Issue 7

[edit]

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Clarification question on Vital 2 initiative

[edit]

Fascinating initiative to improve our coverage at the Vital 2 level; it's probably the trickiest section of the whole thing. Just to clarify: Vital 1s are also included, right? They're listed on the V2 page themselves, but the wording of the posting isn't completely unambiguous (other initiatives specify multiple levels). Vaticidalprophet 19:53, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Vaticidalprophet Yes, level 1 articles are certainly included, although I'd be extremely impressed if anyone is able to manage getting one to GA! I was partly inspired by Cerebellum's reward offer for level 1 which sadly expired without being claimed. the wub "?!" 22:16, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Button to expand table of contents in Vector 2022

[edit]

Hi. I didn't want to keep the Village Pump (VP) thread open too long. So I am making some suggestions here.

Can you put the import code and instructions in the notes at the top here?:

Then I can pass on a link to others instead of code. Also, aren't there some user script repositories on Wikipedia? So the link could be put there too.

In my last post at VP I asked about reducing the space between the lines in the TOC. That would mean less scrolling in the floating TOC. The scrolling can be problematic, and so the less that is needed the better. I think lessening the line separation is much better than decreasing the text size.

I like the fact that the text in the TOC is the same size as the text in the article. As I get older this matters to me. I hate when smaller text sizes are used in image captions, infoboxes, navigation dropdowns, menus, etc. on various wikis. --Timeshifter (talk) 06:02, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Timeshifter Apologies, I've been visiting family so not had too much time for Wikipedia. As I said, the intention is to turn the script into a gadget soon, at which point it will be available in Preferences and there will be no need for code. I did find a bug in Chrome where if you have scrolled down the page at all, the scroll position will jump when clicking expand/collapse all, so ideally would like to fix that first.
As for reducing the spacing between lines, you could do that by adding the following code to User:Timeshifter/vector.css, maybe changing 4px to 2px if you want even less spacing.
.vector-toc .vector-toc-text,
.vector-feature-zebra-design-enabled .vector-toc .vector-toc-text,
.vector-feature-zebra-design-disabled .vector-toc .vector-toc-text {
   padding: 4px 0;
}
the wub "?!" 14:15, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is fantastic! Really helpful on long articles (with expanded TOCs), and help pages: Barack Obama and Help:Table. Many long articles for country presidents, etc..
I am using it at 1px
It works by itself. It does not need to be combined with the "expand all" user script.
Great for Village Pump archives: Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 206
Could you provide the code for legacy Vector 2010 too? I want to show others using old or new versions of Vector.
I wish the floating TOC in Vector 2022 did not require scrolling the article up or down to get the popup TOC to fit in the screen, especially when it is expanded. It is a major flaw. I think if it were fixed many more people would like Vector 2022.
Could you provide some code to make the floating TOC act less like a dropdown menu, and more like an ad popup that fits the screen, and stays in place? Auto-margins or something?
https://www.google.com/search?q=vertical+margin+auto
More like sticky headers. Where the popup TOC is one big sticky header. A popup that doesn't disappear when you scroll the article. It only disappears when one clicks somewhere outside the popup TOC.
Then I could scroll down the page with the popup TOC open while I am looking for the part of the page I need. --Timeshifter (talk) 03:30, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter Legacy Vector's TOC already has very little spacing. However you could decrease the line-height to make it even more compact.
.toc li {
    margin-bottom: 0;
    line-height: 1.4;
}
I don't really understand what you're asking for with the popup TOC, but it seems from your strikethrough at the Village pump that you figured it out? the wub "?!" 10:36, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I tried the CSS. It did not change the line spacing of the TOC in Vector 2010 in Firefox. I lowered it to line-height: 1.1;
The TOC in Vector 2022 is sticky if you first scroll down a few inches before clicking the TOC button. --Timeshifter (talk) 11:55, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Timeshifter The comment you added with the CSS here needs */ at the end to close it and you used /*. So the comment wasn't closed and it stopped the CSS from having an effect. the wub "?!" 12:36, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Sloppy when I am tired. It works great now. I got it down to line-height: 1.2;
Not sure if I can go further without overlap of some text parts. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:07, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

User:The wub/tocExpandAll.js. I intend to link to this from a note at the top of Help:Table.

The note would say something like:

  • Note: Go here for user script to expand/collapse table of contents.

"Here" would be linked to your above JS page. At the top of your JS page there needs to be a line or 2 telling people to add

importScript('User:The wub/tocExpandAll.js');

to their Vector-2022.JS page. Here is a full link you could leave there:

For me that ends up here:

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:22, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.

Geonotice ID

[edit]

Hi, you didn't need to do this. It's only necessary when there is a chance that people will already have dismissed the notice, in order that they be sent it again. But since the date error meant that the notice wasn't sent out in the first place, nobody will have dismissed it. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:17, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Redrose64 That's what I thought, but after fixing the end date it still wasn't showing for me, so I decided to just try changing the ID. And after doing that it seemed to work. the wub "?!" 21:56, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
An amendment to the geonotice takes five minutes or less to be processed by the bot, but up to an hour to actually be distributed to the watchlists. This is what I've observed in the past - I don't know why there is a delay. --Redrose64 🦌 (talk) 12:21, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wishing everybody a Happy Holiday Season, and all best wishes for the New Year! The Nativity scene on the Pulpit in the Pisa Baptistery by Nicola Pisano is my Wiki-Christmas card to all for this year. Johnbod (talk) 02:59, 24 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Johnbod! The pulpit article is wonderful, I remember admiring the cast of that in the V&A. Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to you too! the wub "?!" 12:02, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to do your reward bord request. I would like to do it on Arithmetic. History6042 (talk) 15:15, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Arithmetic is now a GA. History6042 (talk) 15:34, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Noting here that there is an ongoing thread at WT:GAN about History6042's apparent misunderstanding of your reward board task. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 19:26, 30 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
