Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.
Wehda Street airstrikes RFC
Thanks for the close. Following the close, the RFC opener has reverted the article to what he says in his edit summary is 'the "last stable version" per no consensus RfC.' and deleting all reference to an altname thereby, which strikes me as incorrect. Any chance you could establish or comment on what the "last stable version" is in your view? Thanks.Selfstudier (talk) 21:43, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Selfstudier: Commented at Talk:Wehda Street airstrikes. --TheSandDoctor Talk 02:13, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them has been enabled for the following 10 wikis: mediawiki.org, the Italian, Catalan, Hebrew and Vietnamese Wikipedias, French Wikisource, and English Wikivoygage, Wikibooks, Wiktionary and Wikinews. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist on those wikis you can let the developers know.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 5 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 6 October. It will be on all wikis from 7 October (calendar).
- Some gadgets and bots that use the API to read the AbuseFilter log might break. The
hidden
property will no longer say an entry isimplicit
for unsuppressed log entries about suppressed edits. If your bot needs to know this, do a separate revision query. Additionally, the property will have the valuefalse
for visible entries; previously, it wasn't included in the response. [1] - A more efficient way of sending changes from Wikidata to Wikimedia wikis that show them will be enabled for all production wikis. If you notice anything strange about how changes from Wikidata appear in recent changes or your watchlist you can let the developers know.
Future changes
- You can soon get cross-wiki notifications in the iOS Wikipedia app. You can also get notifications as push notifications. More notification updates will follow in later versions. [2]
- The JavaScript variables
wgExtraSignatureNamespaces
,wgLegalTitleChars
, andwgIllegalFileChars
will soon be removed frommw.config
. These are not part of the "stable" variables available for use in wiki JavaScript. [3] - The JavaScript variables
wgCookiePrefix
,wgCookieDomain
,wgCookiePath
, andwgCookieExpiration
will soon be removed from mw.config. Scripts should instead usemw.cookie
from the "mediawiki.cookie" module. [4]

Stones collaboration
Hey again! I wanted to ask you what you're next project would be after "Tumbling Dice"? If you're interested in a collaboration that's Stones-related, I do have one idea... – zmbro (talk) 15:22, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Zmbro: I want to eventually get Charlie Watts up to GA and FA, but that is probably a longer term goal at this point/far from near there…’’Some Girls’’ sounds good in the interim! TheSandDoctor testing (talk) 17:16, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- TheSandDoctor testing, I got you. It'd be nice to get all members of the Stones to GA/FA, like that other British band. Hopefully in the long term. With Some Girls, I mainly need assistance with the sections above release. I acquired the SG 33&1/3 book which proved helpful but I know the article can grow a lot. I also have a few other Stones books including Richards' autobiography which I know can help out. Let me know when/if you wanna collaborate. – zmbro (talk) 17:52, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Zmbro: Let’s pool resources and do this! I’m game to start work on it. Also no need to ping this account as I still see TSD emails/TP messages, the mobile app just logged me out and haven’t bothered to deal with 2FA yet for that one. Wanted to reply faster than 8-10 hours so resurrected this account haha. TheSandDoctor testing (talk) 17:57, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- Haha you got it. I'm good to start whenever. I still have a ways to go with my current project but I'll gladly continue work on SG. :-) – zmbro (talk) 18:52, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Zmbro: When do you want to buckle down on this? Are you planning to take Station to Station to FA? --TheSandDoctor Talk 05:07, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter to me. I'm doing Low first then Station to Station (gonna make sure that's copy-edited first). I'd say the majority of the back half (release-legacy) of Some Girls is finished. Really I'd like to see some better background, recording, and music/lyrics section. I can obviously still assist but I'm going to primarily be doing Sts individual tracks. What do you think? – zmbro (talk) 12:39, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Red (Taylor Swift album)
Hello, TheSandDoctor. This is a courtesy notice that the copy edit you requested for Red (Taylor Swift album) at the Guild of Copy Editors requests page is now complete. All feedback welcome! Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:15, 7 October 2021 (UTC) |
- Hi TheSandDoctor, I've noted an uncited direct quotation in the second paragraph of "Impact and legacy" ("first documented, official pop album"); this should be directly cited per WP:MOS. Other wise I think it's looking better now. Good luck with your planned FAC nom. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:15, 7 October 2021 (UTC)
- For historical reference in archives, I replied here because there is a note on Baffle's page at this time that they have pings disabled and, as such, wouldn't see it if I replied here. --TheSandDoctor Talk 01:49, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Slackjaw
A tag has been placed on Slackjaw requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Stefan2 (talk) 21:04, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Stefan2: Thank you for catching that, I forgot to update it to point to Jim Knipfel when I was doing a history split. Corrected and tag removed. --TheSandDoctor Talk 21:06, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Page-move redirect suppression
Hello TheSandDoctor! This is a courtesy notice that I reversed your suppression of a page-move redirect at List of unsolved murders in the United Kingdom (before 1990) as it does not seem to have been a valid suppression, and also so that the stats tool would work on the page to inform the redirect discussion for the "before 2000" title you nominated. Just FYI, the valid rationales for suppressing a page-move redirect are listed at WP:PMRC, and that is generally considered to be a complete list. It functions similar to the criteria for speedy deletion - we have consensus to delete (or suppress) only when something definitely fits one of those criteria, otherwise we need to pursue deletion without the use of the tools (i.e. through discussion) just like everyone else. Personally I find it helpful if I'm suppressing to link to the specific criterion in the move's edit summary (e.g. "update for correctness (redirect suppressed per WP:PMRC#7)" if it had been recently created and obviously an error), but that's not strictly required. I added more comments to the RfD but I thought it would be better to leave housekeeping notes about admin stuff here. Cheers! Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 23:34, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Ivanvector: You'd be correct there. Thanks for resolving and for the tips. The rationale at RfD now looks rather stupid, but oh well. --TheSandDoctor Talk 23:41, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Question from Shammah Joel on Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer science/Participants (15:18, 31 October 2021)
Hello! I'm a fresh Mechanical Engineering student. I am just so curious on how things works...............interested in learning, python, Arduino programming, web development, cyber security, AI and how to develop mobile software; EVERYTHING! Which should I take as PRIORITY for now? Please I need your advise. --Shammah Joel (talk) 15:18, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Shammah Joel: You will most likely cover all of that in your degree, probably starting with Python. Python is a fun language and a good place to start, generally speaking. The others are probably more advanced topics in comparison. That said, this isn't really what the mentorship program here is for. It's mostly intended to help you learn how to edit Wikipedia and help with any policy understanding etc.; you can read more about it here. --TheSandDoctor Talk 16:08, 31 October 2021 (UTC)
