DYK for Helene Lecher
On 6 May 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Helene Lecher, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Helene Lecher's presentation at the Women at the Hague conference, which Mary Heaton Vorse described as the "most moving speech of all the Congress", urged for peace? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Helene Lecher. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Helene Lecher), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

- Nice one on getting the DYK on the frontpage! I got a credit as well, which was kind Mujinga (talk) 16:25, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
- Mujinga, that was completely and totally thanks to Onegreatjoke. I know some people don't like others promoting articles to DYK, but I personally really appreciate it. SusunW (talk) 16:43, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yes I've given up on that process but it's good someone has the energy! Mujinga (talk) 16:48, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
- Right there with you. I do a few, but not many. SusunW (talk) 17:00, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

my story today |
---|
- Thank you for a good one! - I had a good story on that coronation day: the Te Deum we sang that day. And the following day we sang it for the composer ;) - And today we remember a composer who created music especially for us! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- That's pretty cool that he writes for specific people. (Althuogh, I guess I do too, I write for me .) Thank you for your encouragement. I appreciate you. SusunW (talk) 16:15, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- It was cool until 2019 when he died. The place where I took him for dinner after he arrived a week before the world premiere was the same as for last Saturday's lunch with friends and family. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:00, 10 May 2023 (UTC)
- more pleasant music (heard today!) if you click on songs - did you know a string quartet with two cellos (and no article yet in English? - I nominated Soňa Červená for GA just to give her a bit more exposure. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:09, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- Honestly never heard of a string quartet with 2 cellos, but wow! Really cool that it was played in a hall honoring the great Mexican cellist. SusunW (talk) 22:30, 14 May 2023 (UTC)
- ... and one of the perhaps 10 best halls for chamber music in the world! - I'm happy to have that just an hour away. - Any help with the GA nom, which was an intended immediate fail, but now I got 7 days? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:50, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- Gerda Arendt, I'm glad to try to help with the GA, but it'll probably be this afternoon before I can look at it. Real life appointments this morning. SusunW (talk) 13:23, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- same for me, no rush - specific question is how to word section headers for her life, details in the GAN. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:30, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- I went for rehearsal, and returned found that you worked miracles digging up sources and adding reviews! Thank you. Just tell me who says that Geschwitz - unhappily in love to the other woman - is "wicked"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:42, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- Passetti "Her other San Francisco roles include the beautiful and wicked Countess Geschqitz…". What a relief to know you think I am helping. I was about at the point of stopping to ask. Should I try to find some from London? More from the US? I tried to break up the lists of roles with reviews. Please feel free to move anything around or reword. SusunW (talk) 21:24, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- I think I overlooked the question, sorry, and no, let's see what the reviewer says. - More pics, also new memory and music, and ten years ago I had a DYK for my most serious article --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:20, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

Regarding the composer from Mérida: no rush, I found English sources (which I didn't anticipate when calling for help)), he's nominated and found a supporter already. Best wishes for RL! I was in Mexico ages ago, very memorable trip. Another short trip to Baja California, but in a larger group, less exploring, less adventure. - I have an Easter composition on the Main page - a bit late ;) - and more pics to come, keep watching, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:47, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- Glad you were able to sort it. Still doing stuff with hubby's ears. Surgery on the horizon, so pre-tests. Ugh. Hopefully that will be sorted soon. Mexico is fabulous. Huge, so each region is very different. Always places to explore. SusunW (talk) 14:02, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
- Best wishes for that! - Pentecost was full of music, and my story today is that 300 years ago today, Bach became Thomaskantor, with BWV 75, writing music history. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:33, 30 May 2023 (UTC)
- Lovely. Our taxi driver on the way to my hubby's appointment yesterday was playing Bach. You have no idea how surreal that was here. SusunW (talk) 13:46, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- love it ;) - the Mexican composer is on the Main now. He was head of the Escuela Superior de Artes de Yucatán - any chance to have a stub instead of the long red link? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:33, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Not any time soon, if I am responsible for it. Took a couple I have been working on, in between doctor visits because of my husband's ear infection, live today and trying to get them and Mies ready for GA nomination. One of his doctors just messaged me we need another appointment, so my schedule is a zoo. SusunW (talk) 20:50, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Understand. Today's story is about a singer whom I saw twice, not Wagner and Strauss, but Bach and Weill - more vacation pics! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:25, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- And now yours: a woman caught by the iron curtain (improved with you and GRuban), yesterday: the Mass in B minor, heard in concert then, three musical videos are out, and more vacation pics. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:12, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
- Lovely! Glad we were able to work together on Červená, it's always interesting where one finds sources. I also noted the other day that the tuba player was kept. We worked well together on him too, and I would never have known about him without your asking. SusunW (talk) 16:03, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Singer
Could you do a quick check if we might have material to write a short entry for Peggy Bonini, soprano. She premiered Stravinsky's last song. I saw a review from the NYT for her Musetta in Puccini's La bohème, and photographs, but we'd need a bit on life data. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:26, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- I am hip deep in GA reviews (had 4 yesterday, still working through 3 of them), but a found a bit. Not a lot of biographical stuff. Some reviews, some performances.[1], [2],[3],[4],[5], [6],[7]. Lots more reviews. You might try searching California newspapers to see if there is more biographical info. SusunW (talk) 13:24, 1 July 2023 (UTC)

Fannie Mae Ward Birckhead
Note- no rush or action required on this. I can see you are busy working on GA nominations. I came across Fannie Mae Ward Birckhead (1935-2022) when writing an article on her daughter, Janeen L. Birckhead. Her bio here [8] summarizes her accomplishments as the first Black woman to hold many positions including mayor and local judge. I found some articles: [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. I am not sure that she meets GNG because she was a local politician and judge and all of these articles are in one local newspaper. If you get a chance, could you check to see if you uncover anything else? TJMSmith (talk) 14:06, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, TJMSmith crazy busy right now. Don't write her as a politician. She clearly meets anybio, and was an activist who happened to go into politics. She was part of a federal lawsuit about voting rights, [17]. You'll need to figure out the outcome, but I note in several of the pieces you already have that she was involved in voter registration, i.e. look for clues in the NAACP registration drives after passage of the 1964 Voting Rights Act. This book talks about her. My newspaperarchive.com account isn't working but Gettysburg Times also has an article, which I also found here. (I was hoping the Afro-American from Baltimore would have coverage, but can't access without newspaperarcive.com). Hope that helps. Swing back around if you need more. SusunW (talk) 15:35, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the input! I was able to scrape together a start: Fannie Birckhead. Thanks again, TJMSmith (talk) 04:16, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- I think it looks very good TJMSmith. People who don't understand Southern history may not see the impact that those who registered people to vote after the Civil Rights Act passes had, but it's a very important part of US history. Please feel free to ask me anytime for help and I will give it my best shot. SusunW (talk) 14:01, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Question
…I would say of every characteristic that has shaped me, being a woman is the most foundational…
Thanks for sharing that comment. This general idea has come up in other related discussions (not necessarily having anything to do with women, but with identity) and I was wondering if you could help me understand it. As a man, I don’t have the same idea or belief, but I do acknowledge that other men do. My question is this: in a better world that I can imagine (not this real world), where you were treated differently, where you had every opportunity and access that men do, and where there was no discrimination against women in any sphere (again, not this world, but a more perfect world that we can imagine), would you still feel the same way? Again, your answer will give me insight into other topics, so I thank you in advance. Viriditas (talk) 23:09, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
- Viriditas, it seems unlikely because my experiences would have been different. This is an intellectual question that my friends and chosen family have discussed for years. To answer the question one must strip down their identity to the single characteristic that most shaped or defined "who you are" and "how you view the world". The answer seems to be often related to the constraints or lack of opportunities that continuously present challenges to just being who you are, if that make sense. While on the surface, it seems logical that if equity existed the challenges would vanish, that might not hold true. For example, if one considers say age, even if equal opportunities existed, one might not have the ability. It's late, I'm rambling. SusunW (talk) 05:48, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- The hour may be late, but you are making perfect sense to me; I agree with what you have said here. It sounds very wise. Viriditas (talk) 06:25, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

FAC for shorter biographies
Hi, SusunW -- I hope you're well. I was reading back over the GAN for Elizabeth Maitland, Duchess of Lauderdale while reviewing it at FAC, and saw your replies to Christie and the nominator about nominating shorter biographical FACs. I'm looking towards a potential FAC for Elisabeth Geleerd, which is about ~1400 words at present (expanded ~250 post-GAN). If you have the time, do you have any thoughts or comments on the article? I'm not rushing to FAC -- I have another article to FAC first, and it's still waiting at GAN -- but as someone who myself is hesitant about shorter articles and quality-review processes, and mostly writes non-biographical articles, I'd be interested in any of your expertise. Vaticidalprophet 10:37, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- Vaticidalprophet thanks for introducing me to her. Fascinating woman (I often write about immigrant women and find it interesting that so many women immigrated for more opportunity and to avoid political situations.) Very well written. I made a very few minor copy edits, mostly to reduce repetition. Two observations: 1)
three-pronged portrait of autistic
seems as if it should be schizophrenic, as a few sentences above it states that the modern term is autism. 2) What is her legacy? Is her work still used, was it later deemed foundational or disregarded? Because I am curious, although possibly it isn't necessary to state in the article, what was her chronic illness? Perhaps these are helpful observations. Good luck with FA. SusunW (talk) 14:41, 27 July 2023 (UTC)- Thank you! #1 is an interesting clarity note/"thing I'm too close to the subject to have realized" I'll probably need to footnote, given it might take up too much space in the text -- "autism" was a commonly used term even before it was a diagnosis at all, let alone before it was a common one, and Geleerd and her contemporaries were certainly familiar with "autistic behaviours of schizophrenic children" and similar terms. #2 is tricky for psychoanalysts in general given the whole field fell out of favour, but I'll search more for later analyses of her work past the continued work on borderline children. I never did find much information about her illness, and it seems not all her contemporaries may have known (Tartakoff refers to it, but another source says she died "unexpectedly"). Vaticidalprophet 14:50, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- Vaticidalprophet happy to help, any time. If you cannot discover later analysis of her work, perhaps you can add a bit about the field falling out of favor. It happens in a lot of scientific fields when new discoveries are made that change the trajectory. Just think it is helpful for the reader to know, especially if the answer is that her work replaced by more modern techniques/theory. SusunW (talk) 15:04, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

July music
my story today |
My story today pictures a friend whose birthday is today ;) - we listened to music she helped publishing - at a fancy place (which looked different when Bach played there). -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:06, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry to be slow to answer. Been crazy busy. Glad you are enjoying life. The photos are lovely. SusunW (talk) 16:28, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Congrats to more women GAs! - Yesterday my friend celebrated, with a concert at home, playing four different instruments including baryton - strange thing (bowed in front, plucked in back), lovely music. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:54, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, all 4 that were being reviewed at the same time passed, but it was crazy hopping from one to the other. Cool instrument, kind of looks like a combo of a viola and a sitar. Would love to hear it. I like alto instruments, viola, cello, alto sax. SusunW (talk) 17:00, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- I know the hopping feeling, - worked on a composer on Friday and another today, and still get them mixed up when adding bits. - listen, - that may even have been the piece we heared --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:14, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Love, love, love that! SusunW (talk) 17:30, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- thank you so much ;) - then came a tenor (whose article had practically no music! - and I "almost" heard him, I mean he came to Bayreuth two years after I saw the piece, also a minor role), and now this fascinating woman: Violeta Hemsy de Gainza. Her article - WiR translation from Spanish - looks decent to me, - can you please do a quick check - all sources in Spanish? I began a lead, help welcome. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:49, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- I think I managed most of it, but a double check would still be nice. Finally: June pictures updated, with three great RMF concerts! - My story today is very personal: the DYK appeared on Wikipedia's 15th birthday, and describes a concert I sang. I was requested to translate the bio into German for a memorial concert ... - see background, and we talked about life and death. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:56, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry, been really busy both here an in real life. I don't see any glaring errors in Hemsy. Fascinating read. I love her philosophy, music isn't necessary to sustain life, but life would be less without it, for sure! How you find history on WP, I will never know. Our search engines are horrible and I can rarely find what I want to find. Loved the exchange on Frank Stähle, although I must say am not remotely sure that I live to learn to die. My world view is that life is an adventure and I want to experience as much of it as I can to expand my ability to understand myself and others. SusunW (talk) 17:28, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for all that. She's on the Main page! The "learn to die" was in the context of the works on the program, and we'll do Mozart's Requiem again this year! He was a man who lived ;) - After rehearsals - twice a week because one group rehearsed in Geisenheim and one in Wiesbaden - he always went out afterwards, and after that took a singer home who lived in Mainz, quite a distance (Wiesbaden group only). Not in the official bio ('cause no reliable source): he lost his church job at Lutherkirche because he refused to marry the woman with whom he lived. He left, and his poor successor had no choir, because the singers left with him. All this was before I joined, following a paper ad for the St Matthew Passion - which turned out one of the most memorable concerts of my life. - I am determined to bring the Mozart Requiem article to better quality until November.
- She's still on the Main page, and my story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:21, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- Very cool. I love the stories in history that make people human, flawed, and beautiful. I was never one much for the pristine hero narrative...so boring. SusunW (talk) 13:57, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
- You said that so well, - fireworks on the Rhine for you, "mine" pictured on 1 July, but the real stars were sun and moon. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:24, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

On today's Main page, you can find a cantata that Bach first performed 300 years ago, and an iconic saxophonist from East Germany. Also: a bit about the history of QAI on my talk. Thank you for being part of it! A new member designed a user box that I adopted. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:46, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- I loved the talk discussion. Bach with "the father of free jazz in East Germany", kind of represents my eclectic taste in music, well if you add a bit of zydeco, R&B, jarana, calypso, C&W, ...SusunW (talk) 17:07, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
- Today Jahrhundertring, and I just listened to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival (pictured), - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:08, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
- Wow, I got distracted in that talk page discussion. Oh my, what a mess. I am happily writing a woman I've wanted to write for about 5 years and finally decided to just bite the bullet and do it. I love research! SusunW (talk) 21:29, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

- Trying to find a place for her in the GA list wasn't so easy, and I'm not totally happy with where I put her. Do you think it would be worth to start a listing of "woman's rights activists" or similar? It could combine some people listed as educators, sociologists, or as figures of world history like some suffragettes. (Doctor Who episodes are treated better than feminist activists in the GA lists). —Kusma (talk) 22:16, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Kusma, I have this challenge all of the time. I can never figure out how to nominate them, so I usually just dump them into "Culture, sociology and psychology" with a note like "who knows what subtopic: teacher, writer, activist, musician, philanthropist...can't be put neatly in a box". I have complained for years that our topics don't fit the areas in which women were allowed to participate, but no one has ever even replied or given an inkling that they understand the issue, except Mujinga, who told me in a review they have the same problem. Rarely was their notability in a "field" and a whole lot of what they did was political, but they weren't politicians. Short of dumping them into "world history" or "Culture, sociology and psychology" it's a crap shoot. I would love to have "community and social workers" for the women who did mostly philanthropic work and "women's rights activists" for the women whose work was political, but I just don't know how to get anyone to hear me. I truly appreciate you recognizing it is a problem. SusunW (talk) 22:51, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thinking about this over night, Kusma it occurs to me that rather than "women's rights activists" if there was a category "civil/human rights activists" it would accommodate various genders and causes. SusunW (talk) 13:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
