County Londonderry

[edit]

Please refrain from altering references to County Londonderry to read County Derry. As per WP:DERRY the name of County Londonderry is to be used on Wikipedia. Also please note that, unlike the city naming, the name of County Derry is a purely colloquial name and not a historical name. If you read up on the history of County Londonderry you will see it was created from County Coleraine and there was not a historical County Derry previously that was renamed to Londonderry. If you continue to push edits that alter County Londonderry to read County Derry, you may be blocked from editing. Canterbury Tail talk 14:09, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

County Londonderry/Derry

[edit]

Who says it’s to be referred to as County Londonderry exclusively on Wikipedia? You? Wikipedia is for everybody not a select few. Your reference to the city is not relevant and history is frankly history. The people who live there now call it by both names it also has both an Irish and an Ulster-Scots name.

How about you refrain changing the name to exclusively reflect one group of people and be respectful of everyone that actually lives there. Superlonghurst (talk) 14:58, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In answer to your question, it is Wikipedia's Manual of Style which says that the city is to be referred to as "Derry" and the county as "County Londonderry". See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Ireland-related articles. You are at liberty to propose a change to the Manual of Style - but you may wish to look at Talk:County_Londonderry/Archive_1#Requested_move_28_September_2020 for what happened when someone made a similar proposal in September 2020. Thank you for the link I will submit a proposal today. Superlonghurst (talk) 16:26, 30 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well if you wish to use history as the basis for changing County Londonderry's name, why aren't you changing it to County Coleraine? There was never a County Derry in Ireland's history, and County Londonderry was created mostly from County Coleraine. Canterbury Tail talk 01:41, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I’m using the names by which the people actually living there refer to the city and county. Londonderry/Derry and County Londonderry/County Derry.
By your logic London should be called “Londinium” and Chichester “Noviomagus Reginorum” because historically that’s what they were called when the Romans founded them. Superlonghurst (talk) 02:03, 1 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
