Hi. I'm interested in creating an article about the Croft viaduct, which carries the East Coast Mainline over the river Tees near Croft-on-Tees. I haven't been able to find out much about it yet but I know it was built as a series of skew arches by the Great North of England Railway to a set of principles formulated by Peter Nicholson. The fact that it's a skew bridge puts it high on my list of priorities and the fact that it crosses the Tees is, I hope, of interest to you, given your entry here. Would you be interested in co-operating on this project? MegaPedant (talk) 02:31, 16 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot give you any real help with your railway viaduct article however I can give some advice based on my experiences putting together Wikipedia articles.
As for researching on the web, I use Google and Yahoo on Firefox with the Zotero addon. Without Zotero, documenting and organising web research would be extremely difficult if not actually unthinkable, so I can thoroughly recommend it. Zotero can turn a bit awkward at times but it has never actually lost anything and is getting better with each revision. That said I would find out how you backup Zotero files and folders before you go very far with it. My only difficulty with it is creating tags that are synonymous 'duplicates' which I then have to sort out later on. Can I recommend using heirachical tags in lowercase using a pipe '|' separator, e.g.
activities
construction|materials
construction|dates
lighthouse|light|range
as this keeps similar topics together alphabetically. Zotero's tag 'Filter' allows keyword searching of tags and you can also 'Search' local copies of web pages for keywords. The local copies of webpages are particularly useful if and when websites/webpages are down or disappear. The Wikipedia citation text can be obtained by simple drag-and-drop from the webpage list.
I tend to confine myself to online sources as these are easy to find/access and validate/verify and others have done the leg-work. I can imagine that finding sources for Croft railway viaduct might be difficult if confined to online sources though Google Books might turn up something. Finding information on recently constructed or particularly prominent or notable bridges isn't too difficult, it's the rest that pose a difficulty. That said Michael Makepeace's 'Bridges on the Tyne' website is a start. He gets much of his information from books on the topic and will contact relevant organisations. Who would be a relevant organisation for your viaduct? Perhaps Railtrack's maintenance section. What does the reference section of the local central library have and what advice can they offer? I'm not advocating a trip to Boston Spa but they might do a few photocopies of relevant book for a nominal fee if you can only find out what pages you want. Maybe its worth using Google books here. I don't have any books myself on any structures apart from a recent purchase on pleasure piers. If the structure is significant enough I also put it on Structurae with weblinks and a pile of images.
I had thoughts on doing the Tees river bridges up to Yarm and have researched some of them but not got round to creating any articles beyond Teesquay Millennium Bridge. Any further up-river than Yarm would be unfamiliar territory for me. If I recall correctly, one road bridge under Yarm rail viaduct is a skew arch so perhaps that's an area for co-operation although some railway viaduct information already exists on the Yarm page.
Hope that helps. JY
Many thanks for your long and considered reply. I'll certainly give Zotero a look. I'm used to working on articles mostly single-handed, being the main or sole contributor to the following articles: Skew arch, Kielder Viaduct, Neidpath Viaduct, Lyne Viaduct, Southdown Road Skew Bridge, Hereford Road Skew Bridge and Peter Nicholson (architect), most of which are fairly obscure. I'm reasonably familiar with Yarm Viaduct: there's a photo of the two arches (out of a total of 43) that are skewed on the Skew arch page, but I don't have much information on Croft Viaduct, other than that it was one of the earliest (though highly successful) applications of Peter Nicholson's method of construction. Nevertheless, I'll follow the leads you have given me and start an article in a sandbox in my private namespace. Once it has matured a little I'll move it out to the public namespace. Many thanks again. MegaPedant (talk) 22:23, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Where did you get this name you put on the Vai disambiguation page? I wondered why I had created a redirect for this term but I can't seem to find anything online about it.
If you know anything, please tell me. I made the mistake of trying to start an article on Fuchs Systems, which had a plant near where I live until 10 years ago. The building is still empty and I saw it yesterday.
You said "Siemens VAI". That's not "Siemens VAI Engineering". Yet you put "Engineering" on the disambiguation page.
Anyway, I have fixed that page and made sure the company name is correct in the articles I've updated. So you don't know anything about the company? It's very confusing, because it appears VA Tech Wabag bought it, and yet there are sources that say it is still a Siemens division. The important thing is I still have no idea who owns Fuchs, the company that closed the empty factory I passed earlier in the week.Vchimpanzee· talk·contributions·18:40, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).
Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.
When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.
Thanks for that! It's one I've been planning for some time, as we have a bit of a family connection. I'd not started it though, as I'd found a lack of WP-acceptable sources.
I guess you're already planning on the George Melly connection and the Melly drinking fountains?
Hi. You reverted the edits on this page because the url's don't match the original pages cited. They do; I checked by citation title and crossreferenced the dates on the original citations. I have just checked my last before your revert and it tallies, so I am at a loss as to why you have reverted them. Happy to be proved wrong, just can't see it at the moment. Best wishes. Cyberbot has rescued some of the dead links and they are the same ones I installed that you removed. Also - you don't appear to have a notice on your page saying that you away from Wiki - so are you ignoring me? Best wishes. The joy of all things (talk) 20:47, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Census statistics
References to the Office for National Statistics census data used in a large number of articles are all now dead. The University of Durham have produced a replacement website, Nomis, that gives access to the 2011 census data. Template {{NOMIS2011}} has been created to enable this to be used in articles rather than use the URL directly as this could change and allow it to be modified centrally. There is no direct correlation between the old and new URLs so a BOT cannot be used to switch from one to the other. See the template documentation for further details of usage. It would be good if members could change articles over to use the new method of access for the 2011 census and check that the data is correct at the same time.

Recent changes
As some of you will know the script for generating the list of project articles for use with the Recent Changes utility stopped working a couple of years ago so the list was way out of date. The good news is that I have managed to find a convoluted way of creating a new list using AutoWikiBrowser. The link for using the new list is Watchlist of recent edits. If you are not interested in talk pages then use Watchlist of recent article edits or for talk pages only Watchlist of recent talk page edits.

The Images of England web site is to be decommissioned this month by Historic England. The text of the site entries has been available on the corresponding National Heritage List entry since that web site was created. The images are being transferred ahead of the decommissioning. As a result of this a BOT has changed all {{IoE}} templates to {{NHLE}} templates and translated the reference number according to a list provided by Historic England.
It would be good if members could check these, when they come across them, as I have spotted one with an incorrect translation. Some articles already had {{NHLE}} templates in them so the references may need to be combined. Other changes that may need to be performed are removal of template or text referring to the site as needing registration, changing the text "Images of England" or "IoE" to something more appropriate or may be even removing it if it is part of the description..

Wiki Loves Monuments
September is the time for the annual Wiki Loves Monuments competition to get quality photographs of listed buildings and scheduled monuments in the UK. It would be good if any members in the Yorkshire area got out and about taking images of any monuments or listed buildings that they find. There are still several entries on the various list articles without images and it would be best to prioritise these if you are in the right place. Details for this years competition can be found here. There are cash prises of up to £250 for the best images that are submitted.
If you are not in Yorkshire then you are still able to join in as the competition covers the whole of the UK, separate competitions are available for other areas of the world if you are not UK based.

General Election
With the calling of a General Election will members keep an eye on the various Parliament constituency articles. Please check that the candidates are appropriately referenced and that they appear in alphabetical order by surname so that we do not show any bias to a particular party. It is also worth checking the settlement articles to see if they have the correct constituency shown.
There will also be all of the candidate articles to check to see if they have the appropriate term end details and text to show if they are standing or not at the election.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Brexit
Well by the time you read this Brexit will have happened and this is the tidy-up that needs doing this month. You can leave the constituency link in articles that use {{infobox UK place}} as the template will hide the field in the output. Those using other templates will need to be edited individually to remove/hide the information. There are also a number of articles that mention the fact in the text of the article and these will need editing to remove the information or show that it was only valid until 31 January 2020.

Happy Christmas
It is time to wish all members of the project a Happy Christmas. Though it will be a very different one this year because of the restrictions placed on us by the government because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Though there will be some relaxation of the rules for a 5-day period over the Christmas period it will not allow much of the usual festivities to take place. Hopefully the vaccination will be available early next year for the country to get back to some sort of normality.

In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 209 is ahead of WP:GM who have 90. WP:YORKS also has the lead in FAs at 82 while WP:GM has 71 out of a total number of 4,680 articles.
Currently we have sixty five Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Olympic and Paralympic Games
Happy Yorkshire Day, this month with the Olympic Games in progress it would be good to take a look at some of the articles related to Yokshire competitors. I have gone through and tagged those competitors that have articles and are born in Yorkshire, though there are a significant number that do not include details of where they are from. If you know ones that should be tagged then please take this opportunity to tag them and add relevant categories to their articles. Many are just a couple of line stubs and could do with improving to give some background to these athletes. Many are in need of photographs and there may be some free ones available to help illustrate articles.
Later in the month there will also be the start of the Paralympic Games. Another set of articles that will get a high number of hits as people search for details of the competitors and could do with work to get them in to shape.
Hopefully we will have more Yorkshire medals from both games to celebrate.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The August 2021 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no nominations on the project talk page. I have gone for a couple of current Olympians this month though could not find any B-class so have gone for a C-class.
The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR. You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.

Just to say thanks for all the effort put in by members on articles covering the Yorkshire area and to wish everyone a Happy Christmas. It is time to take a break and to spend some time with family and friends.

A note that there will be a major change coming up for North Yorkshire with the reorganisation of the local government of the area. This will see the abolition of the districts and North Yorkshire becoming a unitary authority taking on all of the responsibilities of the district councils. This will require a change to most articles relating to the area. If you have any thoughts on what needs doing then make them known at the project talk page.

Article counts
The drop in the article count last month was caused by a BOT converting the assesments over for pages that had become redirects. Please remember that when you convert an existing article into a redirect to change the class rating to |class=Redir and remove the importance rating from the project banner on the talk page.

Happy Christmas
A Happy Christmas to all members of the project and thanks for all the work you have put in supporting articles relating to Yorkshire. The year saw much change, especially to the governance of North Yorkshire which became a unitary authority in April. This affected a large number of articles, but most of this has been done by those who are active. There is still many of the smaller settlements that need updating, so if you have time have a go at bringing them up to date.

Currently we have seventy five Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Unreferenced backlog
There is an Unreferenced Article Backlog drive running throughout February across Wikipedia, it would be good for project members to be involved in this and help reduce the number of unreferenced articles supported by the project. You do not have to signup to be involved. There are currently 245 in the "Cites no sources" section of the project's clean-up listing that could do with some sources adding to them.
WikiProject Yorkshire Collaboration of the Month Project
The February 2024 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no nominations on the project talk page.

Hello there! Interested in having a chat with fellow Wikipedians? There's a meetup in Leeds on Saturday 4th May 2024, at the Tiled Hall Café at Leeds Central Library.
You're receiving this one-off message as you're either a member of WikiProject Yorkshire, you've expressed an interest in a previous Leeds meetup years ago, or (for about 4 of you), we've met :)
I plan to organise more in future, so if you'd like to be notified next time, please say so over on the meetup page.
Please also invite any Wikimedia people you know (or have had wiki dealings with) – spread the word! Hope to see you there.

This month will see the General Election take place with a raft of boundary changes for the constituencies, thanks to the boundary commission review. A lot of work has been done on updating the constituency articles to cover the changes and new articles created for the new constituencies. Once results are in there will be changes to make to all of the candidate articles to show their new status as MP or not as the case may be. There will also be changes to make to the settlement articles to show the new MP and may be change the constituency if the boundary changes affect it.

Happy Yorkshire Day to all project members, official celebrations this year take place in York. May be if anyone is in York could get some pictures of the celebrations would be useful. The York article is about to loose it's GA status as it has been under review and is in need of work. Would be good if members could take time to update and keep it as a Good article.
