Welcome!

[edit]
Hi, Noirish, Welcome to Wikipedia!

Happy Wiki-ing. -- John Fader 18:43, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Happy holidays Steve-O

[edit]

Thanks for getting in touch with me. By the way I think your web site is the best noir site on the WWW. I link the articles I edit to your site (external links) if you have an article on the film but the link gets deleted sometimes as some consider it SPAM. What bull-shit! In due course I'll try to get a consensus that it's not. I will try to get a noir task group together in the Film Project. One of the things I'm working on is cinematographer articles. It's slow going. This is what I'm working on: Luigi's Noir Projects. Keep in touch and I'll try to post on your site. Best always, Steve-- ♦ Luigibob ♦ "Talk to Luigi!" 22:56, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The images of Henry Fonda and Jason Robards you uploaded for Once Upon a Time in the West look to me like they are the wrong aspect ratio. They look significantly taller than they should, I think, comparing to other images of the actors, and looking at a copy of the film (particularly directly comparing to the scenes where the screenshots are from). I wondered if you could say where these are from? I have seen versions of the film shared that were the wrong aspect ratio before. -Ethan (talk) • 2008-01-8 12:00 (UTC)

Cleaning up the List of disaster films

[edit]

Steve...At one time you showed some interest in the List of disaster films. I was wondering if you would be interested in coming back and discussing all the clean up that needs to be done to it? - LA @ 02:30, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Mr. Film Noir Man

[edit]

I'm trying to take care of your talk page as you drop in and out of Wikipedia. If you get a chance send me an e-mail as I'd like to ask you something. Thanks. I still can't believe that FILM NOIR OF THE WEEK site of yours. It's mind boggling. AWARD WINNING. Your biggest coup, of course, is getting such noted noir authors and historians to write articles. KUDOS!!!! I may reach out to some media sources so an article can be written about the site and your efforts. See you in a dark, foggy night, wearing trench coats, of course, -- ♦ Luigibob ♦ "Talk to Luigi!" 09:10, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More updates for images, all taken care of or will not be needed. Best Luigibob (talk) 16:56, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hangover Square

[edit]

Hello. Weblogs specifically fall under WP:LINKSTOAVOID, irrespective of their subject matter or whether or not they were written by the editor who added them. There's an exception if they've been written by a recognised authority in the field, but this one doesn't seem to have been. --McGeddon (talk) 23:30, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, if this is your own website, please familiarise yourself with Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines before adding the link to any more articles. Thanks. --McGeddon (talk) 00:02, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your point but why am I all of a sudden being singled out? I've posted dozens of links to my site and others in the past with no problems. I am an authority on the subject as well. I can prove this if this is going to become an editing war here. With all the editing being done and spam being added to Wikipedia I'm surprised my attempts to help expand the little film noir section is being criticized. This is one of the faults of Wikipedia. I understand you need a think skin when people jump on and edit your work, but to do so with only to follow "the letter of the law" seems silly. I've been a contributor to Wikipedia for years. --Steve-O (talk) 17:48, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To be sure your are an expert in film noir film, Steve. As I've noted in the past your "Film Noir of the Week" is arguably the best web site on the topic (I do not like the term genre for film noir). You argument is spot-on, as I hardly edit in Wikipedia these days due to some of the same concerns you articulate. I visit your sire often. Have a Happy Holiday season Steve. See you in the dark.....Luigibob (talk) 19:59, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No special reason for you being "singled out" here, you've just been noticed as adding apparently WP:EL-failing links to some articles. It's the "do you ever go fishing?" thing.
Wikipedia has a strict definition of who does and doesn't count as a "recognised authority", but even if you meet the criteria, you should still be very careful about adding links to your own websites, as per WP:COI. If your website is a definitive and recognised authority, then other users will link to it; you shouldn't have to promote it yourself. --McGeddon (talk) 15:03, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to have added a link to your blog on Abandoned (1949 film) again, with no rationale in the edit summary - you really should take a quick look at Wikipedia:COI#How to avoid COI edits before adding any more links to your own website. It's advisable that you discuss a self-promotional link on the article's talk page before adding it.

If there's a wider issue that I'm missing, or that you'd like some guidance on, feel free to leave a message on my talk page, or fire a question to the good people at the Films WikiProject. --McGeddon (talk) 20:56, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And okay, thanks, I see you're leaving some useful comments on the talk pages now. You should post these comments before adding the links, though - as the owner of the site, you have to explain why it should be added, not why it shouldn't be deleted.
I'll leave a reply on the Abandoned talk page, but it's probably more constructive to raise this at Films WikiProject, so that other interested editors can see it and get involved with the conversation. --McGeddon (talk) 20:59, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
well, these links have been up for years until recently. I'm restoring them with justification. I will post at Film Project too after I try to restore all the work I did here that was wiped out by a couple of over anxious editors Steve-O (talk) 21:03, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It'd be polite to wait until after the discussion, before re-adding the links. Please make sure to read WP:COI - these links to your own site are "controversial", and should be discussed before being restored.
There are plenty of editors here who'll be happy to restore them on your behalf (myself included), if there's a clear consensus that they're a useful resource that meet WP:EL. I wouldn't put yourself to too much trouble to add them all back right now. --McGeddon (talk) 21:13, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
well, the first resolution is discussion with people who are removing the links. Since it's only you and one other editor it's safe to say that I have talked to you both. If you 2decide to continue to remove the links then we'll have to go to the next step. The consensus has been to leave the links in the past. There has been NO problems with these links including a small group of editors that have worked on pages with me.Steve-O (talk) 21:22, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If these have already been discussed and have been shown to meet WP:SPS, can you provide a link to the discussion? If they haven't, we should have this discussion before going any further - Films WikiProject looks like a good, neutral place to do this. I'm not sure what "next step" you intend, but simple, public discussion of policy seems like the obvious one. --McGeddon (talk) 21:26, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
you know what? Forget it. You win my friend. Have a great Sunday. My attempt to help with wikipedia (including starting about 90 percent of the articles on Noir here regardless of a NOTW connection) apparently isn't appreciated. Please remove any links you deem necessary. I don't think I have to prove myself an expert on noir, or explain why using articles written by experts do not qualify. You are victorious. CongratulationsSteve-O (talk) 21:31, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Somewhereinthenightdvd.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Werieth (talk) 15:33, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:MaryAnderson.JPG

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:MaryAnderson.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Rrburke (talk) 02:23, 15 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article Jean-Pierre Darroussin has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 20:47, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on The Deep End requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-deep-end-joy-fielding/1000465676?ean=2940151027748#productInfoTabs. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Replaceable fair use File:Percy Helton.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Percy Helton.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Whpq (talk) 21:54, 15 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
