WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors

[edit]

Dear project member, This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are NOT making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. NoahTalk 03:50, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I will consider thinking about this! I was personally a fan of the other colors, but I do think they could use some adjustments. Sria-72 (talk) 22:38, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Materialscientist. I wanted to let you know that I reverted one of your recent contributions—specifically this edit to 2022–23 South-West Indian Ocean cyclone season—because it did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Teahouse or the Help desk. Thanks. 2023 Pacific hurricane season

[edit]

Hi, I would like to inform you that the storm "Adrian" in the 2023 Pacific hurricane season and not spawned yet. We should wait for trusted information so we can confirm and add Adrian in. Note that NOAA hasn't confirmed of it yet, and they should be more trusted. Insendieum (talk) 19:21, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but huh? Why exactly are you nominating my subpages for deletion? Sria-72 (talk) 18:38, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My reasons at the MfD are clear. Please read WP:NOTWEBHOST. Calling the request "stupid" or other nonsense reason will do nothing to prevent deletion since MfD results are based on the strength of arguments made based on policy, which that is not.--Jasper Deng (talk) 19:54, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

JTWC citation

[edit]

Hello. I would suggest using Template:Cite JTWC when adding JTWC citations, since it is already preformatted. Regards, 👦 22:21, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I wasn't actually the one who added that section, but thanks for the tip. Will keep in mind! Sria-72 (talk) 22:55, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits

[edit]

Can you please revert your edits to the timelines for the 1940s to 60s tropical depressions from the timelines. I'm not sure why you removed them. Your one edit summary said "removed non-HURDAT depressions." I'm not sure why you believe that the depression has to be in HURDAT for it to be included in the timeline. As even weak tropical cyclones can be quite destructive, it is important to document all of them, of all intensities. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:00, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HURDAT is the official database for the Atlantic and thus tropical depressions that are just randomly thrown in from other sources, with no tracks, 90% of them being useless had to go. I kept the ones that were actually notable. This was done for the 1954 season, so I presumed that there was nothing wrong with cleaning up these articles.

The tropical depressions are not randomly thrown in from other sources. They are from the Atlantic hurricane reanalysis project, the same group of people who created HURDAT. Also, what is the basis for determining which ones were notable? I don't believe you have cleaned up the articles at all but removing valid information, so I ask again for you to revert your edits and restore the tropical depressions to the timeline. Whether they have an official track or not does not discount that they are recognized as depressions by the same official source that determines all HURDAT points and intensities. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:55, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reverting. Did you make sure you undid all of them? It might seem minor, but I like having accurate timelines. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:29, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I saw you hadn't reverted those edits, so I went ahead and did that. BTW, I saw that you're in North Carolina. I wondered if you by chance have seen List of North Carolina hurricanes? I wrote that a while back, and although it's a featured topic, I feel like it could be at risk of losing its status, if it isn't up to date. Would you have any interest working together to bring it up to standards? The List of North Carolina hurricanes (2000–present) article is probably the most out of date, and it has several sections that are missing references. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:52, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I could definitely try, though rn i'm focused on updating the recent EPac tracks to the new colors. Sria-72 (talk) 23:56, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sweet, we definitely need all of the tracks to be the new colors. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:09, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've updated the 2022-18 summary maps and some of the 2022 tracks Sria-72 (talk) 00:55, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

SPAC Naming sections

[edit]

These sections are not really needed as some the information provided such as Ken replacing Kina, Ului replacing Usha is original research and not covered by the TCOP, hell in the last case I remember that we were expecting Usha but got Ului despite the latter being in the TCOP. Some of it is redundant and information that the reader doesnt really need to know such as a system not being renamed when it moved into the basin. I would argue that the only thing that is really needed is the retired names, which can be better stored in the seasonal summary section.Jason Rees (talk) 22:34, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

i understand your concerns about the usha/ului thing but i'm sorry how the heck is giving readers more information not needed. isn't that the entire point of this website? Sria-72 (talk) 00:47, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The information you are trying to insert like what constitutes a tropical cyclone in the region or what names were used in the basin during the season or for the first time isnt really needed or relevant especially when the source you are trying to use to cite it with doesnt cover the material. Yes we are here to give information out to the readers but we do not need to include absolutely everything about the season especially when it comes to the naming which can get really trivial and not relevant really fast.Jason Rees (talk) 10:45, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

ATCF

[edit]

Hi there – I saw your recent edits on 2024 Pacific hurricane season and wanted to let you know that we shouldn't be relying on ATCF for information about storms. We need to stick to what is said by official warning centers; the running best track is not sufficient because advisories sometimes deviate from what ATCF says. ah sorry, didn;t know that. Sria-72 (talk) 21:00, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
