Creating a page
I'm planning to create a page. It's about a fairly low-profile video game, however is notable enough according to WT:VG. I do want to draft the page on a subpage first, as it will likely be my first page. Do I have to use the article wizard when drafting the page on a subpage or can I simply create the page User:Leeds United FC fan/Grand Ages: Medieval. Can I move the page to mainspace after I have finished drafting the article? Thanks. Leeds United FC fan (talk) 14:38, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
- Leeds United FC fan You do not have to use the article wizard, you are free to create the use a sub page and move it to mainspace when it is ready.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:47, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
- Can I use references on the subpage version? Leeds United FC fan (talk) 14:48, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
- You can and should. However, you should avoid adding categories until it is in mainspace.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:57, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
- I can not find a source for the developer other than Steam, the same article I have already used for the game's platform. What should I use for titles, as the title of the article in the search engine often differs from the title of the article on the page? Leeds United FC fan (talk) 15:07, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
- in general, I would use the title of the article on the page not what comes up in a search engine. However, these are the types of questions that are best asked at the Teahouse. You have an invitation on your talk page.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:44, 3 September 2015 (UTC)

RE; image and graphic form
Below is a complete recap of what is happening:
Drop me a note with the OTRS ticket number and I'll look at it in the morning.--S Philbrick(Talk) 02:40, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
Hello @S.Philbrick: Thank you for your message. I would gladly drop you a note if I knew how. There are things to do with wiki I do not know how to use. I have checked, there is no ticket # as yet. What I am asking for is the form to fill out for: 1.) photo image and 2.) graphic image for the owner to sign, which will then be sent back into wiki permissions. I also require information on how to proceed with the photo image, at the time it was taken in Canada (1980's) the individual is the first copyright owner, not the photographer those laws would not change until revision of Bill-C11 on 29 June 2012 now as of 7 November 2012 photographers are now included. After the laws changed the photographer has all rights to images (only from the date the law changed) even if it is a paid service. I have attempted to locate the photographer as I assumed wiki would ask for that individual with ads in news print and web and nothing is coming back which I have found in the past as a researcher normally indicates the individual is deceased. How do I proceed with the photo image?? http://petapixel.com/2012/11/07/canadian-photogs-now-officially-own-the-copyright-to-all-of-their-photos/[User:Imasku|Imasku]] (talk) 13:13, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I understand this can be a confusing place. To respond your first point, it is easy, but as with many things that are easy once you know how it wasn't obvious. If you look at my signature, you'll see the word "talk". If you click on that, it will bring you to my talk page where you can leave me a message. Regarding the ticket number, whenever you send in something to OTRS it should generate an automatic reply, and that automatic reply includes a ticket number at the end of the message. Is that not the case?
Unfortunately, your request sounds complicated but I will try to look into it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:08, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick:: No no reply. I went to your page and can not see how to leave a message. I do not even know how to respond back to you even. I hope this is not confusing. I need to know whom the legal copyright holder is at the time the image was taken. If its the person whom paid for it (as the law states at that time) then there is not an issue once I receive the form for the person to fill out and return to wiki then I can load a band image in there article. But if its the photographer - then there is a problem. Imasku (talk) 14:11, 24 August 2015 (UTC) T.Heart (talk) 14:45, 24 August 2015 (UTC) T.Heart (talk) 14:47, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

@Sphilbrick: you can discard the first two they are over.. only the one dated 21 August is current. Thank you. T.Heart (talk) 15:13, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
- Imasku I'm sorry to report this isn't going well. I posted a question to and OTRS mailing list, get some responses but not as clear-cut an answer as I had hoped. In the hopes that someone will come up with a better answer. If that doesn't happen soon, you may have to remind me to look into it again. Sorry, but we have over 1000 open requests so my attention gets diverted.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:56, 26 August 2015 (UTC)
@Sphilbrick: Sorry I did not even know you had posted an answer. If I can get the form Mr. Kendall has another photo of the band he can get a photographer to sign off on, and he can sign for the graphic image as he is the only owner. thanks T.Heart (talk) 19:55, 27 August 2015 (UTC)

- Bongan Are you aware that you can do this yourself?I think it would be best, partially for the practice, partially because I sort of follow the rationale but if a question arose it would be better directed toward you than me. In case you don't know, you do not edit an article title, you move it to a new title. The move button is in the upper right-hand corner – on mind you click "more" and that it is one of the options. If you do this, allow it to create the redirect then go edit the redirect to point to the other article you mentioned. Let me know if my directions are unclear.(You do need to ask for an admin's help if the desired page move requires deletion of one of the pages but that doesn't seem to be the case in your request.)--S Philbrick(Talk) 21:04, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

- Bongan Done Actually, after I started the move I realized you could have moved Singha to Singha beer , which sounds like the right article title. The word "Beer" is not part of the name, but the generic word to clarify this article is about the beverage not the animal. I removed Singha Beer, as it is no longer needed - it isn't needed to disambiguate a search. I created the other redirect as requested.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:11, 6 September 2015 (UTC)

WilliamJE and Nyttend
I received a request from Nyttend to block WilliamJE for harassment about a week ago [1]. At the time I was in the middle of several social events, a veterinary crisis and was preparing for an out-of-town business trip during the week. I took a quick look at it at the time and came to roughly the same conclusion that you apparently did, that nothing block-worthy or even overtly harassing was taking place. We appear to have two editors who have gotten under each others' skin.
However, I was concerned that WilliamJE's comment here [2] indicates a complete dismissal of Nyttend's worth as an encyclopedia contributor. That, coupled with his maintenance of a shit list here User:WilliamJE#"Suggesting that someone resign as an admin does not qualify as a personal attack. Not even close." has the appearance of someone who is cherishing a grudge to the detriment of the encyclopedia. It is a clear violation of the letter and spirit of WP:POLEMIC and should be removed. I asked WilliamJE to remove it and received a wall of text concerning all the editors he doesn't like, with a very few positive examples. No acknowledgement of my concerns, just more dismissal of those he dislikes (see User talk:Acroterion#Block needed, and I'm involved for the discourse). If it's not removed voluntarily I'll do it myself and bring it up at ANI, but since WilliamJE appears to have some regard for your opinion I'd appreciate it if you had a word as well before pursuing that route. Acroterion (talk) 01:24, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Acroterion and WilliamJE: Thank you for contacting me first. You summarized it precisely: We appear to have two editors who have gotten under each others' skin.
- I'm trying, with some but only limited success to navigate through some difficult channels. If you have any advice, I'm all ears.
- On the one hand, while we liken our admins to janitors, in fact we give admins a fair bit of power, and power unchecked is problematic. In generic terms, I support William's belief that admin abuse does exist, and needs to be checked. Given the toolset provided to admins and non-admins, the non-admin's are at a decided disadvantage if no admin is willing to help.
- That said, I haven't always agreed with William and specific allegations of admin abuse. As you noted above some people have gotten under each other's skin, in my experience is in such situations, both sides see the other as unreasonable. I am trying to take on the nontrivial challenge of helping William when I think some admin's have been overly harsh yet recognizing the challenges that admin's face, and the often less than collegial way that William handles differences of opinion.
- On the specific issue I have a couple thoughts. My Pollyanna thought is that it would be nice if all parties involved forgot the history and started over. All parties involved I'm making substantial positive contributions to Wikipedia, so the project will be markedly improved if all spend the time contributing positively. I also recognize the reality that my Pollyanna thought isn't likely to happen. The Wikipedia community has developed a rule (I think it might be written down I'll search for it if necessary) editors should not maintain, on wiki, lists of past affronts (with some very limited exceptions such as short-term preparation of an ANI or ARBCOM filing. We probably would prefer that people not even do it off wiki but of course we have no jurisdiction over that. If someone asserts they want to write it down so they don't forget it we can't stop them, but we can say keep it off-line.
- It is too late to say "in short", but I'll summarize, I concur that the section maintained by William should be removed. I hope he will do it himself and I will ask him to.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:16, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with pretty much everything you've said. I've learned to not expect apologies over past disagreements on Wikipedia, but in many cases I've seen differences of opinion set aside, more than I would have reasonably expected. I don't want to inflame a sense of grievance on WilliamJE's part, but I could wish that it was a little less well-tended. Acroterion (talk) 02:57, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
db-user
I'm cleaning up a bunch of user sub-pages with {{db-user}}, but some of those pages were redirects to the live page and I accidentally put db-user on the actual project space. Now I can't seem to take them off. Do you know what I need to do to fix it? David King, Ethical Wiki (Talk) 01:27, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- CorporateM Not sure, I would've thought it would be as simple as removing the template. I'm looking at your contributions to see if I can figure out which one you're talking about but haven't figured it out yet. Let me know if you separately resolved that if not show me an example.--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:49, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- Looks like Nihiltres just processed them, identify any you need undeleted, and I can do it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 01:52, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
- I noticed that some related pages in the project space were up for deletion, but left those alone—I'm also willing to undelete any as needed. {{Nihiltres |talk |edits}} 02:13, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
OTRS help
Hi Sphilbrick. I'm handling an OTRS ticket and having trouble finding the original file. According the email, "(...) file was uploaded to Wikipedia (...) on June 29, 2015. See Sphilbrick’s revisions". Do you know something about? Best Regards.Willy Weazley 01:58, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Willy Weazley That's not a lot of information, do you have a ticket number?--S Philbrick(Talk) 02:05, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Here.Willy Weazley 02:06, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Willy Weazley If you look at: Wikipedia:OTRS_noticeboard#Email_permission_set_for_Audrey_Capel_Doray_Hexagon_on_June_29.2C_2015_from_Conceptual_Aesthetics you will see it is related. Which is not the same as an answer, but I feel like I'm supposed to play detective. In that case someone provided a permission statement and managed to do it without mentioning the name of the file, making it very difficult to find the statement. I'll keep looking.--S Philbrick(Talk) 02:13, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Here.Willy Weazley 02:06, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Willy WeazleyMy guess is that she is referring to: File:Here and Beyond Multi-Media Mirrored Installation.jpg
- If that's not it, I don't know what else to do. In the other situation a person asked what was going on with a permission but used a different name for the image than the actual image name uploaded, and used yet another name in the permission statement which didn't match either one. I get that some people find some of our processes complicated but if you are asking us about an image and use three different names, it makes our life difficult. We now have an inquiry from someone asking about an image and they can't tell us the name of it, who uploaded it away or where it was uploaded. That makes our job quite difficult.--S Philbrick(Talk) 02:33, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

Wikidata examples
Hey, Sphilbrick. It looks like you have settled into a productive cycle of comparing Persondata and Wikidata, transferring usable information, and afterwards deleting the deprecrated template with an appropriate edit summary. Thanks for that, good data is being preserved and transferred. It would be helpful to me if you could provide examples of still usable Persondata which had not be transferred to Wikidata prior to your review. At your convenience, could you provide links for the following?
1. five examples of birth dates not previously transferred to Wikidata;
2. five examples of birth places not previously transferred;
3. five examples of alternate names not previously transferred;
4. five examples of short descriptions not previously transferred.
Thanks, and keep up the good work. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 17:24, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
- Dirtlawyer1I will try to identify some examples as I move ahead. If you look to my contributions you can probably guess I am going through them in alphabetical order and up to L. When you say birthdates not previously transferred, I assume you mean examples of birthdates in Persondata. One of the things I am doing as I review a coach is to add their birthdate if I can find it, and then add it to Wikidata. I assume you do not care about those. I have often noticed birthplaces not transferred. I haven't noticed the others as much but I will start keeping track.
- Regarding birthplaces, I notice they fall into two categories and it is possible only one. Let me give you an example of the second category, which will also be sort of a question as I think I handled it correctly but want to make sure. Larry Tidwell has a birthplace of Sanger, Texas. When you go to Wikidata, enter the place of birth and then try to enter the value of Sanger, you are prompted with six values, none of which are obviously Sanger, Texas. Three of which are Sanger with no further information. I took the first one randomly, then checked the Wikipedia page and the associated Wikidata and confirmed it was the same Q value. I now realize I can hover the mouse over it and see the Q value, but that sounds like a fairly crude way of identifying the right entry. My guess is somebody from the Wikidata side needs to clean up these three entries so they don't all look the same. That's not a job for me at this time, I'm just trying to clarify if that's what needs to be done or if I'm missing something. Should I keep track of these examples?
- I said there were two categories – in the other category the location is uniquely found in Wikidata, but it is possible that someone did the transfer prior to the Wikidata entry being created and was unwilling or unable to create it themselves. That's a guess, as it seems unlikely someone would make the effort to pick up some of the items and ignore one. My guess is they could not complete the place of birth and so skipped it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:24, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
- Lauren Jackson Had a short description "basketball player". The Wikidata description is "Australian basketball player". While that is not exactly the same I don't think it qualifies as the example you are looking for. Let me know if my assumption is wrong. I think you are looking for examples where the person data description is "richer" than the Wikidata description.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:29, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
- Le'coe Willingham Had two birthdates one in the lead, one in the INFOBOX. The one in the lead was correct the one in the INFOBOX was not. Probably not surprisingly the one in the INFOBOX was transferred to Wikidata. I see that it was transferred by a bot. Probably not trivial to ask a bot to check for more than one date especially when one is well-formed in a template and the other is free text but I just thought I'd mention it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:48, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Removal of copyrighted text
Hi Sphilbrick,
I am very new to editing on Wikipedia so I'm just looking for some clarification.
I made some edits to the following post: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Canadian_Voice_of_Women_for_Peace, and while I completely understand the reasons for reverting the changes that linked to the Canadian Encyclopedia, I'm not sure why you reversed all of the other changes I made to the article - namely the inclusion of the archival sources.
At this time, I will have to spend a bit more time reading up about the linking of outside articles (I was under the impression that I attributed the source correctly, but I likely didn't, so I'll figure out how to do it properly so that it doesn't infringe copyright), but I would like to have the changes that I made that aren't associated with the link to the Canadian Encyclopedia reverted.
Thanks, Archyvette (talk) 15:41, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
- Archyvette, It's a very fair question. I'm actually surprised it isn't asked more often.
- Over the years we've worked out procedures to deal with violations of copyright policy. One of the standard things we do when identifying a problematic edit is to use the rollback option. As a very new editor might not even know what this means. Any editor has the ability to undo any single edit, and undoing a single edit is often an appropriate thing to do. There is another option called Rollback which undoes all consecutive edits of a single editor at one time. Brand-new editors do not have this as an option but more experience editors and administrators do have this tool at their fingertips.
- Obviously, you could point out that if you made five edits in a row, and the third one was the only one with a copyright issue, that the proper thing to do is to undo that particular edit. However the following sequence of events is fairly common:
- a new editor sees a paragraph that they think is not particularly well worded, and finds a discussion elsewhere that is much better worded. They aren't aware that the better worded discussion subject to copyright. To prepare to add this paragraph they first remove the existing paragraph in one edit, add the new material in a second edit, and then make some tweaks to the new material in a few subsequent edits. I hope you can understand that in such a situation it makes sense to undo all of those edits.
- Of course there are other situations, where an editor may make some appropriate edits, followed by addition of some copyrighted material, followed by some additional edits to another section that have nothing to do with the copyrighted material so the ideal situation is to undo the middle edits. However, it is often difficult to tease out exactly what's going on, and when you recognize that we get several hundred such reports a week, we don't have enough volunteers to check every single edit in a sequence identifying which ones need to be undone and which ones can remain. A process is to do Rollback, and the original editor is free to redo the edits that may be fine.
- If that's not easy to do because you did not save the material elsewhere, you can let me know and I can reverse the revision deletion temporarily, make the information available to you so that you can recover the acceptable edits, and then I can reinstate the revision deletion allowing you to re-add the acceptable material. If that applies let me know. I hope I've explained why what looks like ham-fisted reversion is actually done. S Philbrick(Talk) 20:10, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

- Hi Sphilbrick, yes, could you please revert it temporarily - I will copy the other information and put it back without the copyrighted section. I can send you a message once it's been done? Thanks, Archyvette (talk) 11:23, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
- Archyvette, I have undone the revision deletion. Please drop me a note when you have finished recovering the information that doesn't infringe copyright. Thanks. S Philbrick(Talk) 12:03, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Corrections of copyvio
I have drafted the information of Linda Iheme which has no any correlation with other websites. So I'm waiting for the response about it. Abbas Kwarbai (talk) 22:43, 8 June 2020 (UTC)
- Abbas Kwarbai, I assume you are talking about Draft:Linda_Iheme. I am not sure I understand your statement that you are waiting for a response. From whom? If you have contacted someone, fine, but if you are just waiting, you can add the code
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of your draft (remember to switch to the source editor first) to get someone to look at it. S Philbrick(Talk) 01:38, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
One editor had edited the article but still I know the next step to the progress. How long may it take to see my article live in Wikipedia please? Abbas Kwarbai (talk) 05:29, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
Which code am going to add on the top of my draft? Please how long it takes to approve Abbas Kwarbai (talk) 08:10, 9 June 2020 (UTC)
- Abbas Kwarbai, I posted the code in my response. you post subst:submit, enclosed in double curly brackets. I don't know the current length of time for reviews, it may be a couple months, but when you post the code, the recent wait time may appear. S Philbrick(Talk) 11:39, 9 June 2020 (UTC)

Engineering technologist
Hey, nice to meet you! On Engineering technologist you removed [3] this on the article. I removed the same thing but when Cwmhiraeth asked Diannaa they said, [4]. And since they put the same thing, I still think that they copied the article back a few years ago, per Diannaa. Best, Signed,The4lines |||| (You Asked?) (What I have Done.) 15:48, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- The4lines, looks like it was a false positive, sorry about that. S Philbrick(Talk) 18:17, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
