Help me!

Please help me with... how do we enable the parameter for "state", i.e. state="extended", to be used with this template, template:Franklin D. Roosevelt? trying to do so. appreciate any help. thanks. Sm8900 (talk) 14:41, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

hi @Jmcgnh:, actually, I just edited the template parameter at the following edit, and now it seems to be working fine. so perhaps my question was a bit premature. anyway, I welcome any input on this. thanks for your reply!!

I looked at the source for the Navbox module and it appears that only the values collapsed and autocollapsed are recognized and acted upon. It seems that anything else is just treated as if it were expanded, a word that is not explicitly checked for as a value.
All that aside, I recommend that you leave the state as autocollapsed on the federal judges article. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 16:25, 7 October 2019 (UTC)

2019 US Banknote Contest

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

question re barnstar template

I found this template at another user's page. User:Derek.cashman/Barnstar box. it seems to be a useful way to compile all of the barnstars for one user. however, I have no idea how to add it to my own page for my own use. when I try to find the page for this template, I don't seem able to do so. can you please assist? thanks. --Sm8900 (talk) 15:49, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

never mind the above; I clicked on that page, and realized it is not a template, but rather a formatted box.

Hi Sm8900, feel free to copy the code I use on my user page: Include {{User:Sm8900/topicons}} anywhere on the page, then copy User:ToBeFree/topicons to User:Sm8900/topicons and modify as you like. Take care to only use "public domain" images. Most icons can not be used in this way, as a link to the image description page is normally required for copyright attribution. Only "public domain" (or Creative Commons Zero) icons can be used in this way.
As this does not directly answer your question, I am not closing this help request. Please replace {{helpme}} by {{help me-helped}} if this is already sufficient. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 16:23, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

Sm8900, perhaps an off-Wikipedia discussion medium like IRC: See Wikipedia:IRC_help_disclaimer, but after clicking the blue button, remove "-help" from the channel form.

Sm8900, this is done by Template:Talk archive navigation, see Template talk:Talk archive navigation#Noeditsection. Not sure how you'd turn it off though. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 18:59, 26 December 2019 (UTC)
The magic word __NOEDITSECTION__ is applied by the {{talk archive}} template to discourage editing, as discussed at Template talk:Talk archive#NOEDITSECTION. New Article: 2010s political history

You asked for my opinion on this new article. The article mentions major events in ten or so countries, but there is no mention at all of most of the other 190 or so countries in the world. Specifically, major actors such as China, India, Russia, and the European Union are not included (except in relation to Hong Kong and Brexit), and major events such as the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, & the Syrian Civil War are not included. Equally serious, almost all the articles seem to begin in 2019. Since you link to more complete articles related to the different issues, you could easily shorten the information in each section and include a wider range of topics. For instance, in the U.S. you mention impeachment of Trump, but you start in 2019 when it has roots that go back to the election in 2016. Plus you say nothing about the Obama Administration, nor about other issues (health care, gun control, trade, the Great Recession--which started in 2007 but dominated from 2010-2011). I didn't read the entire article, but you also have to be careful about citations: I noticed you write about Yemen, "...some have labeled it as a genocide" but neither define "some" nor include a citation.

I can imagine contributing to this article, and I think it is useful to have world political history for the entire decade at a glance. With events happening all over the world at a fast pace, it is easy to overlook or forget events that took place even a few years ago. Hi, I reverted your edit on Intentional community as it is inconsistent with the singular list that I have seen for just about any other See also section. Please see MOS:SEEALSO. Also, it is unclear why the on particular community or region was singled out when there are so many communities. It seems like this particular edit would be better suited to a list article. @Peaceray: hi. thanks for your note. ok, let's discuss. the reason I singled out Jinwar is because it is actually a rare and possibly unique example; an intentional community, set up in a zone of conflict, during an active war, in the Third World. so perhaps it is an exemplary example of this concept in action. could we perhaps consider allowing it to remain there? or else, if not, add a paragraph or two to the entry itself, to describe it? --Sm8900 (talk) 14:45, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

change of name for article

To me, a "list" chronicles specific events without providing context or follow-up. While I think lists of events in a given time period and/or place are useful, I also like broader, narrative articles that help the reader understand what is going on. I don't like the idea of changing 2010s political history to a list, even though it goes without saying that it cannot be totally comprehensive.

Help me!

Please help me with...is there a template which simply allows me to leave a simple text note in italics in an article, i.e. a note that would be visible within the article itself to any editors or readers? you can view this article section for an example of what I mean: 2019_in_United_States_politics_and_government#History_by_issue.

I'll comment but leave the help request open.
While the 2019 in United States politics and government page may be a special case, a note like the one you mention is not something that should generally appear in an encyclopedia article. Wikipedia offers a blanket invitation to edit, so there is no need to call out for editing in any one place to the general readership.
As to how best to do it, the normal italicization method of doubled single-quotes is going to be shorter and clearer than any template invocation. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 17:42, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
